There was a small turnover in migrants along the coast with 1 'Scandinavian' Rock Pipit (Marine Drive), 5 Meadow Pipit, 2 Wheatear (Marine Drive), 2 Black Redstart (Marine Drive), 1 Blackbird, 1 Fieldfare and 10 Chiffchaff seen between Castle Hill and South Cliff.
Elsewhere the first Little Ringed Plover of the year was back on Wykeham South Lake, a male Merlin was seen on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access), 1 Mediterranean Gull was at Holbeck and 3 Curlew flew south past Marine Drive.

Another improvement in migrant numbers produce the following between Long Nab and South Cliff - 1 'Scandinavian' Rock Pipit (still at Holbeck), 1 White Wagtail (Long Nab), 3 Wheatear (1 Long Nab, 2 Marine Drive), 1 Black Redstart (still near St Marys Church), 1 Redwing, 21 Chiffchaff and 6 Goldcrest.
Elsewhere a Mealy Redpoll was with 6 Lesser Redpoll in West Ayton, at Wykeham South Lake there was a Goldeneye and 6 Curlew, also 4 Dunlin and a Ringed Plover stopped briefly before heading off east, a Goosander and 5 Chiffchaff were at the Mere, 41 Tufted Duck were at Peasholme and 17 Wigeon and 7 Teal were on Johnson's Marsh.
On the move (north unless stated) were 1 Red-throated Diver, 5 Fulmar + 3 south, 2 Gannet + 1 south, 4 Cormorant, 2 Shag, 1 Common Scoter south, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Black-headed Gull + 1 south, 127 Common Gull + 15 south, 8 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 228 Herring Gull, 7 Great Black-backed Gull + 3 south, 5 Kittiwake + 5 south, 6 Auk sp + 11 south, 1 Sand Martin (first of the year), 40 Meadow Pipit + 19 south, 2 Rock Pipit, 1 Grey Wagtail south, 3 Alba, 2 Rook south, 21 Carrion Crow + 5 south, 1 Brambling south, 4 Goldfinch + 4 south, 13 Linnet + 7 south and 1 Yellowhammer south.

Of interest a suspected torpedo was discovered on the rocks below the Long Nab Hut which is apparently due to be detonated tomorrow!!!

Thursday 27th - Saturday 29th March 2014

After a very quiet two days, with only a Green Sandpiper seen between Snainton and Yedingham on the 28th, the 29th was at least a little more lively.
Migrants seen between Cloughton Wyke and South Cliff were 2 Snipe, 65 Meadow Pipit, 1 'Scandinavian' Rock Pipit (Holbeck), 7 Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest.
On Johnson's Marsh there were 2 Shelduck, 10 Teal, 11 Wigeon and 2 Oystercatcher, a Shoveler, 2 Teal and 2 Oystercatcher were at Seamer Tip, 3 Goldeneye were on Wykeham South Lake, at Scalby Mills there were 9 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 40 Siskin were along Hatterboard Drive and the first pair of Lesser Black-backed Gull were back on territory along Spring Bank.
Passage was only very light (mostly north) with 1 Golden Plover, 4 Meadow Pipit, 1 Chaffinch, 1 Linnet + 10 south and a Siskin south

It was a fairly quiet day with the only reports being the Black Redstart near St Marys Church and a Pink-footed Goose, an Egyptian Goose, 13 Teal, 2 Shoveler, 12 Tufted Duck and a Goosander on Wykeham South Lake.

Migrant numbers were still low but at least there was a little more variety, between Long Nab and Cornelian Bay were 2 Meadow Pipit, 1 Wheatear, 1 Black Redstart (still near St Marys Church), 4 Chiffchaff and 1 Snow Bunting (Cromer Point).
On the move at Long Nab (south unless stated) 3 Red-throated Diver + 1 north, 16 Fulmar + 2 north, 22 Gannet + 5 north, 1 Cormorant + 1 north, 1 Shelduck, 3 Common Scoter, 4 Eider, 1 Red Kite north, 1 Black-headed Gull + 1 north, 21 Common Gull + 4 north, 9 Great Black-backed Gull, 107 Kittiwake + 6 north, 19 Auk sp + 3 north, 3 Skylark, 7 Meadow Pipit, 8 Alba, 5 Goldfinch and 91 Linnet.
Elsewhere 2 Shelduck were on Scalby Lodge Pond and and 150 Linnet were at Long Nab.

The Black Redstart from the 17th remained in the area near St Marys Church, but other than that migrants were very thin on the ground with only 2 Meadow Pipit, 3 Pied Wagtail and 6 Chiffchaff seen between the Castle and Cornelian Bay.
There was a trickle of passage along South Cliff with 1 Grey Heron and 1 Buzzard north and 2 Alba south.
Elsewhere 7 Purple Sandpiper were in the Harbour, 8 Redshank were at Holbeck, an adult Mediterranean Gull was seen near Suffield, 8 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Pink-footed Goose, 2 Egyptian Geese and 2 Goldeneye were at Wykeham South Lake and 3 Shelduck, 4 Teal and a Goosander were on Seamer Tip.

There was unfortunately no sign of the White-tailed Eagle during the day despite great conditions but seen at the Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint during the morning were 25 Redwing and 29 Pink-footed Geese heading north.
Elsewhere 6 Great Crested Grebe, 33 Whooper Swan, 3 Pink-footed Geese, 1 Egyptian Goose, 7 Teal, 16 Wigeon, 2 Goldeneye, 6 Oystercatcher and a Dunlin were at Wykeham South Lake, 2 Great Crested Grebe were on Seamer Mere, 11 Teal, 17 Wigeon, 2 Oystercatcher and a Curlew were on Johnson's Marsh, 4 Goosander and a Snipe were on Harwood Dale Lake and a Red-throated Diver, a Guillemot and 2 Chiffchaff were in Cornelian Bay.

The WHITE-TAILED EAGLE was seen again to the east of the Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint at 09.40hrs but was lost to view when it appeared to go down north of Hackness in the Silpho area, despite searching it again remained elusive.
Continuing the raptor theme 3 Red Kite were seen during the day, 2 flew south over Scalby Road at 10.40hrs and another was seen over Low Dales near Hackness Hall at 11.58hrs.

Two very contrasting days!
The only report on the 20th was of a Chiffchaff and signs of Otter activity in Scalby Beck.

The 21st produced an adult WHITE-TAILED EAGLE that flew east past the Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint at 09.03hrs but unfortunately wasn't relocated anywhere, this represents the 5th record for the area and only the 3rd since 1948!
Also the first Wheatear of the year, a male, was at Wykeham South Lake where there were also 2 Egyptian Geese and 30+ Wigeon.

A very quiet few days with the only notable reports coming on the 19th. In Jackson's Bay there were 2 Bar-tailed Godwit, 1 Ringed Plover and 3 Dunlin while at Scalby Mills there were only 6 Wigeon remaining.

A Black Redstart, the first of the year, feeding in gardens near St Marys Church on Castle Hill was the highlight of a very quiet day, other migrants seen between Castle Hill and Cornelian Bay were singles of Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, Chiffchaff and 3 Goldcrest.
Many more Chiffchaff were reported from inland sites, 8 Golden Plover were on Fylingdales and 15 Purple Sandpiper were in the Harbour.

An arrival of Chiffchaff over night was probably the only interest of the day with 14 reported, most were singing birds from inland locations but coastal sightings included 3 at Long Nab 1 in the Open Air Theatre and 1 in Cornelian Bay.
Elsewhere 8 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Egyptian Goose, 50+ Wigeon, 18 Tufted Duck, 10 Oystercatcher, 2 Curlew and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull were on Wykeham Lakes, 39 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills also at Long Nab was a Goldcrest and 2 Goldcrest were in Cornelian Bay.

A quiet few days. The 14th produced 3 Red-throated Diver and 16 Guillemot in South Bay, 20 Teal on Flotmanby Carr, a Dunlin on Cayton Carr, 3 Siskin in Falsegrave Park and 7 Alba north along South Cliff.

The 15th was only marginally better, past Long Nab (north unless stated) were 1 Red-throated Diver + 1 south, 36 Fulmar + 1 south, 2 Gannet + 24 south, 6 Cormorant + 2 south, 5 Shag + 2 south, 5 Eider, 5 Common Scoter south, 19 Black-headed Gull south, 2 Common Gull + 39 south, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 92 Herring Gull + 145 south, 13 Great Black-backed Gull + 21 south, 35 Auk sp + 2 south, 1 Meadow Pipit south, 2 Alba south, 1 Goldfinch south and 7 Linnet south.
Elsewhere 2 Pink-footed Geese, an Egyptian Goose, 1 Gadwall, 1 Goldeneye and 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull were on Wykeham South Lake, a Great Crested Grebe was off Long Nab, 8 Tufted Duck and 2 Grey Wagtail were on Valley Road duck pond and 2 Chiffchaff were in Crook Ness.

A slight increase in migrants today with 1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Meadow Pipit, 7 Rock Pipit, 2 Chiffchaff and 5 Goldcrest between Cornelian Bay and Castle Hill.
There was a trickle of passage, mainly north bound, during the afternoon with 68 Pink-footed Geese, 8 Meadow Pipit, 13 Redwing (all north over Valley Road between 01.00hrs and 01.20 hrs), 1 Carrion Crow + 1 south, 1 Chaffinch, 1 Linnet south and 2 Goldfinch south.

Another very quiet and similar day to yesterday, migrants between Cornelian Bay and the Spa today were 4 Meadow Pipit, 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Chiffchaff and 1 Goldcrest.
Off Holbeck were 7 Purple Sandpiper, 5 Mediterranean Gull and 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 250+ Kittiwake were off Marine Drive and a single Razorbill was in South Bay.

There was a little more evidence of things starting to happen during the day with a Chiffchaff on South Cliff and Goldcrests on Castle Hill and in the Italian Gardens.
Kittiwake numbers increased dramatically with 200+ rafting off Marine Drive with the odd bird checking out the Cliffs.
Out in South Bay were 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Guillemot and 1 Razorbill and 6 Mediterranean Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull were at Holbeck.

The main interest of the day was mostly over the sea, on the move (north unless stated) were 2 Red-throated Diver + 1 south, 1 Great Northern Diver, 37 Fulmar, 40 Gannet + 30 south, 4 Cormorant + 2 south, 5 Pink-footed Geese, 1 Mallard, 2 Common Scoter + 5 south, 6 Dunlin, 8 Black-headed Gull south, 1 Common Gull + 28 south, 5 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 374 Herring Gull, 20 Great Black-backed Gull, 8 Kittiwake south, 93 Auk sp + 3 south, 1 Alba south and 5 Chaffinch.
Elsewhere 5 Red-throated Diver, 13 Common Scoter, 6 Kittiwake and 1 Guillemot were in South Bay, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Egyptian Goose and 88 Wigeon were on Wykeham South Lake, 114 Lapwing and 2 Dunlin were on Flotmanby Carr, 16 Purple Sandpiper were in the Harbour and a Lapland Bunting was at Long Nab.

Some late news concerns a male Hen Harrier hunting over Fylingdales Moor yesterday where there were 40 Fieldfare and 10 Redwing.

The GREEN-WINGED TEAL was present during the morning on Potter Brompton Carr and preformed well for all visitors, also on site were 2 Egyptian Geese, 4 Shelduck, 2 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 1 Peregrine, 7 Snipe, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Rock Pipit, 13 Pied Wagtail and 1 White Wagtail.

The GREEN-WINGED TEAL was present again today on Potter Brompton Carr. For anyone wishing to see the bird access has been arranged for tomorrow morning between 07.00hrs and 11.00hrs only, there is strictly no access to the site outside these times, any attempts to access the site outside these times may result in the news of any good birds in the future being withheld!
To reach Potter Brompton Carr take the A64 to Ganton, turn north towards Ganton Golf Club continuing north over the railway crossing to reach the small bridge over Sherburn Cut (Grid ref: SE 979 789). Park near here ensuring vehicles can still pass along the road & that no gateways are blocked.
From here walk west along the track to view the wetland to the south.
Also on Potter Brompton Carr during the day were 2 Shelduck, 24 Teal, 22 Curlew, 48 Lapwing, 252 Common Gull, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 29 Pied Wagtail and a Lapland Bunting flew east.
Elsewhere 4 Great Crested Grebe, 50+ Wigeon, 1 Shoveler, 2 Goldeneye and 6 Oystercatcher were on Wykeham South Lake, a Great Crested Grebe, 2 Gadwall and 2 Goosander were on Seamer Mere, 2 Shelduck were on Scalby Lodge Pond, 4 Goosander were on Harwood Dale Lake, the Polish ringed adult Mediterranean Gull PNN5 was at Scalby Mills along with 5 Lesser Black-backed Gull and the Chiffchaff was still in Crook Ness.

Access to the Wykeham South Lake Viewpoint

You can now view from the east side of the Wykeham South Lake from the new viewing area/screen for birders. To reach the viewpoint, turn down Garth End Road in West Ayton and drive right to the end (Darrell's Low Farm). Park near there and walk down the track to the south for 200m. Alternatively drive through the gate (close gate or leave open if already open) and park by the viewing area (room for 2 cars) or on the verge at both bends in the track (room for a further 4 cars). DO NOT BLOCK THE TRACK AS FARM VEHICLES OFTEN USE IT. NB. It has been confirmed with Scarborough Borough Council that the track is in fact a public unmade road.
Please be aware that this area remains sensitive and it is clearly important that we are able to maintain good relations with local land owners and tenants. THEREFORE IN THE EVENT OF FINDING A RARITY THAT IS LIKELY TO ATTRACT NUMBERS OF BIRDERS PLEASE CONTACT NICK ADDEY (07986889277) OR CHRIS BRADSHAW (07515145442). Unfortunately there was no sign of the Green-winged Teal on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access) during the day but Teal numbers had increased to 54, also present were 3 Shelduck the Shoveler, 173 Lapwing and 23 Pied Wagtail.
The highest day total of Whooper Swan was beaten today, with birds past Long Nab and on Wykeham South Lake totalling 64, interestingly the previous highest day total of a mere 37 was set back on the 7th March 2011!
At Wykeham South Lake the 19 Whooper Swan were still present with 92 Wigeon and 7 Goldeneye also there, at Long Nab there were 4 Red-throated Diver, 23 Curlew, 6 Guillemot, 2 Meadow Pipit and 2 Lapland Bunting, a Shelduck, 5 Wigeon and 10 Mallard were on Flotmanby Carr, 70+ Teal were on the river east of Ruston Carr Bridge, 7 Common Scoter and a Guillemot were in South Bay, 2 Ringed Plover and a Dunlin were on Cayton Carr and 15 Siskin were in Falsegrave Park.
On the move (south unless stated) were 7 Red-throated Diver + 5 north, 9 Fulmar + 3 north, 92 Gannet, 7 Cormorant + 6 north, 45 Whooper Swan north, 6 Teal, 1 Common Scoter + 1 north, 1 Goosander, 4 Curlew, 4 Black-headed Gull north, 2 Common Gull + 4 north, 5 Lesser Black-backed Gull north, 158 Herring Gull, 16 Great Black-backed Gull + 7 north, 1 Kittiwake, 2 Guillemot, 2 Auk sp + 16 north, and 2 Alba.

Late news was received of a Great Grey Shrike in Sieve Dale, Dalby Forest along with a Goshawk, 3 Fieldfare, 6 Siskin and 3 Crossbill.

The clear highlight of the day, and of the year so far, was the discovery of Scarborough's first GREEN-WINGED TEAL on Potter Brompton Carr. It was present there with 22 Teal for about 45 minutes before it and 4 other Teal left in the direction of Wykeham South Lake at 12.45hrs, but despite searching it wasn't relocated.
In the event that it is found again tomorrow on Potter Brompton Carr access arrangements will be made, details of which will be posted here.
Also on Potter Brompton Carr were 2 Shelduck, 1 Shoveler, 1 Gadwall, 180+ Common Gull, 17 Pied Wagtail, 1 White Wagtail and 15 Fieldfare (no general access), at Wykeham South Lake there were 19 Whooper Swan, 2 Egyptian Geese, 6 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 4 Goldeneye and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 6 Lapland Bunting were at Long Nab.

The Great Grey Shrike was seen again in the Low Woof Howe area of Langdale Forest, Lapland Bunting numbers dropped back to 8 at Long Nab today, the Chiffchaff remained in Crook Ness and at Wykeham South Lake there were 6 Pink-footed and 2 Egyptian Geese, 4 Gadwall, 1 Shoveler, 92 Wigeon, 1 Goldeneye, 9 Oystercatcher, 400 Black-headed Gull, 900 Common Gull and 350 Herring Gull.
Pink-feet were again on the move with 823 heading north and 30 south, also moving (south unless stated) were 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Fulmar north, 5 Cormorant + 2 north, 1 Greylag Goose, 2 Common Scoter north, 1 Ringed Plover north, 1 Dunlin north, 1 Curlew north, 6 Black-headed Gull, 5 Common Gull + 1 north, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull north, 155 Herring Gull, 16 Great Black-backed Gull+ 5 north, 1 Guillemot, 1 Skylark, 3 Alba, 1 Goldfinch, 21 Linnet + 6 south, 2 Snow Bunting north and 1 Reed Bunting.

At Long Nab the Chiffchaff, 1 Siskin and 9 Lapland Bunting were present, 8 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Egyptian Geese, 8 Gadwall, a Pochard and 12 Oystercatcher were on Wykeham South Lake, 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Great Crested Grebe and 5 Common Scoter were in Cayton Bay, a Pink-footed Goose, 8 Goosander and 2 Oystercatcher were on Harwood Dale Lake, a Pink-footed Goose, 2 Shelduck, 10 Tufted Duck, 2 Oystercatcher, 18 Snipe and 180+ Common Gull were on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access), 3 Whooper Swan were on Lebberston Carr, 2 Mandarin were at Hackness, 80 Wigeon, a Lesser Black-backed Gull and a Grey Wagtail were at Scalby Mills, 6 Common Buzzard, 5 Goshawk, 2 Mistle Thrush, 2 Brambling and a Crossbill were at Wykeham Raptor viewpoint, 4 Bar-tailed Godwit were in Jackson's Bay, a Green Woodpecker and 4 Crossbill were in Broxa Forest and 2 Grey Wagtail were at Hilla Green.

Another quiet day with even fewer reports than yesterday! Eight Lapland Bunting and the Chiffchaff were at Long Nab and a Pink-footed Goose was on Harwood Dale Lake.
On the move (south unless stated) were 1 Red-throated Diver north, 6 Fulmar, 43 Gannet, 2 Cormorant north, 1 Black-headed Gull, 14 Common Gull, 107 Herring Gull, 20 Great Black-backed Gull, 1 Guillemot, 1 Skylark, 3 Alba, 23 Goldfinch, 12 Linnet + 14 north and 2 Lapland Bunting.

Very few reports on a fairly quiet day, 2 Common Scoter, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Reed Bunting and 8 Lapland Bunting were at Long Nab, 12 Common Scoter were in South Bay, at least 8 Mediterranean Gulls were up at Holbeck and 6 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Egyptian Geese and a Little Owl were at Wykeham South Lake.
On the move (south unless stated) were 2 Red-throated Diver + 1 north, 8 Fulmar + 3 north, 27 Gannet, 1 Cormorant, 2 Mallard, 1 Common Scoter + 1 north, 7 Lapwing, 12 Black-headed Gull + 1 north, 27 Common Gull + 12 north, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull north, 101 Herring Gull, 15 Great Black-backed Gull + 9 north, 1 Auk sp, 3 Skylark and 7 Linnet.

At Long Nab there were now 8 Lapland Bunting moving between the fields. Nine Mute and 9 Whooper Swans and a Goldeneye were on Wykeham South Lake, 100 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills, an Eider was off Marine Drive, a Merlin flew over the A64 at Seamer Carr and 2 Shelduck and 4 Skylark were at Scalby Lodge Pond.
On the move (south unless stated) were 6 Red-throated Diver + 1 north, 7 Gannet, 1 Cormorant north, 1 Shag, 4 Eider, 2 Common Buzzard, 5 Lapwing, 16 Black-headed Gull + 5 north, 45 Common Gull + 1 north, 252 Herring Gull, 8 Great Black-backed Gull + 1 north, 12 Skylark + 2 north, 1 Alba, 3 Carrion Crow north, 12 Starling, 5 Goldfinch north and 9 Linnet + 2 north.
