On the move (south unless stated) were 2 Fulmar + 4 north, 1 Manx Shearwater, 44 Gannet + 31 north, 5 Common Scoter north,10 Oystercatcher, 4 Knot, 4 Sanderling, 8 Dunlin, 4 Whimbrel, 1 Redshank, 9 Common Gull, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 8 Great Black-backed Gull + 1 north, 17 Sandwich Tern + 2 north, 4 Common Tern, 1 Arctic Tern and 6 Auk sp + 3 north.
In Cornelian Bay were 20 Oystercatcher, 1 Ringed Plover, 16 Turnstone, 7 Redshank, 26 Curlew and a Grey Wagtail, 13 Turnstone were in the Harbour, 3 Dunlin and a Sanderling were in North Bay and a Juvenile Mediterranean Gull, 110+ Black-headed Gull, 170+ Kittiwake, 270+ Herring Gull, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 97 Great Black-backed Gull, 21 Sandwich Tern and 2 Common Tern were at Scalby Mills.

The highlight of a watch at Long Nab was the fourth Scarborough record of CASPIAN GULL, a juvenile which flew north at 18.23hrs.
Also on the move (south unless stated) were 6 Fulmar + 9 north, 1 Manx Shearwater + 4 north, 48 Gannet + 43 north, 4 Common Scoter north, 5 Oystercatcher + 2 north, 2 Whimbrel, 1 Curlew, 3 Turnstone, 1 Arctic Skua north, 1 Black-headed Gull + 3 north, 6 Common Gull + 2 north, 2 Great Black-backed Gull north, 18 Sandwich Tern, 9 Common Tern, 2 Auk sp north, 1 Puffin and 1 Flava.
The Garganey was still on Johnson's Marsh, 13 Turnstone were in the Harbour, in Cornelian Bay there were 26 Oystercatcher, 10 Redshank and 13 Turnstone and 1800+ Kittiwake were feeding off Long Nab.

A much better day with a lot more activity at sea including the first Roseate Tern of the year.
On the move (south unless stated) were 2 Fulmar + 57 north, 46 Manx Shearwater north, 113 Gannet + 1062 north, 23 Cormorant north, 71 Common Scoter north, 1 Marsh Harrier north at 20.10hrs, 1 Oystercatcher, 10 Sanderling, 19 Dunlin, 1 Redshank, 5 Turnstone, 3 Arctic Skua north, 1 Great Skua, 13 Black-headed Gull + 32 north, 56 Common Gull + 8 north, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull north, 1156 Kittiwake north, 67 Sandwich Tern + 101 north, 1 adult Roseate Tern at 14.43hrs, 35 Common Tern north, 6 Arctic Tern, 9 Auk sp + 70 north and 7 Puffin north.
Three Storm Petrel were trapped during the evening and into the early hours of 26th with at least another 4 birds being attracted but avoiding the net.
Elsewhere the Garganey along with the Shoveler reappeared on Johnson's Marsh, 52 Oystercatcher, 4 Redshank, 6 Curlew and a Whimbrel were in Cornelian Bay, a Snipe was on Rudda Road Flash and 2 Turtle Dove were in Staintondale.

Yet another slow summer day. On the move (north unless stated) were 5 Fulmar, 4 Manx Shearwater, 255 Gannet + 30 south, 2 Cormorant, 12 Common Scoter, 1 Lapwing south, 5 Black-headed Gull + 3 south, 1 Common Gull south, 44 Kittiwake, 9 Sandwich Tern and 6 Auk sp + 4 south.
At Scalby Mills there were 4 Oystercatcher, 4 Curlew, 3 Redshank, 1 Greenshank, 119 Black-headed Gull, 4 Common Gull and 3 Sandwich Tern, 2 Redshank, 6 Curlew, 1 Whimbrel and 25 Sandwich Tern were in Cornelian Bay, 6 Egyptian Geese, 2 Common Sandpiper, 60 Sand Martin and 40 Swallow were at Wykeham South Lake, a Teal and 8 Mistle Thrush were at Flotmanby Carr, and a Willow Warbler was in Crook Ness.

Elsewhere 9 Egyptian Geese, 15 Tufted Duck and 7 Lesser Black-backed Gull were on Wykeham South Lake, 2 Little Egret were on Flotmanby Carr and a Snipe was on Johnson's Marsh.

A Garganey on Johnson's Marsh was the highlight of the day, also present there were 2 Teal, a Shoveler and a Little Egret while in the Long Nab area were 140 Linnet and a Willow Warbler.

A much quieter day over the sea with very few waders moving. Past Long Nab (south unless stated) were 18 Fulmar + 56 north, 68 Manx Shearwater + 11 north, 512 Gannet + 105 north, 3 Cormorant + 11 north, 4 Teal + 7 north, 5 Tufted Duck + 1 north, 121 Common Scoter + 311 north, 1 Red-breasted Merganser north, 71 Oystercatcher, 1 Dunlin, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 5 Whimbrel, 1 Curlew, 1 Arctic Skua + 1 north, 14 Black-headed Gull + 19 north and 8 in and west, 18 Common Gull, 24 Great Black-backed Gull, 71 Sandwich Tern + 13 north, 6 Common Tern, 1 Arctic Tern, 54 Auk sp + 56 north, 1 Puffin north, 38 Swift and 1 Alba.
Elsewhere an impressive 34 Common Sandpiper were on Wykeham South Lake where there were also 4 Egyptian Geese, little Egret was at Scalby Mills, 2 Shoveler and a Green Sandpiper were on Flotmanby Carr and a Kingfisher wast at Johnson's Marsh.
At Long Nab there were 45 Tree Sparrow and 5 Peregrine (including the 3 Juveniles) which at one point were all chasing and practising on one Whimbrel which did eventually escape, minus a few feathers!!

Elsewhere a Little Grebe on the sea off Scalby Mills was unusual, a Red-throated Diver was on the sea at Long Nab, a Wigeon and a Snipe were on Rudda Road Flash, a Common Sandpiper was on Johnson's Marsh and 2 Turtle Dove were seen in Staintondale.

A steady day for passage, on the move (south unless stated) were 1 Fulmar + 3 north, 2 Manx Shearwater north, 97 Gannet + 104 north, 6 Cormorant, 5 Common Scoter + 2 north, 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Dunlin, 1 Whimbrel, 3 Curlew, 2 Turnstone, 49 Black-headed Gull + 91 north, 1 Mediterranean Gull north, 25 Common Gull, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull + 1 north, 2 Great Black-backed Gull, 3 Common Tern, 14 Sandwich Tern + 42 north, 100 Auk sp + 13 north, 4 Puffn, 360 Swift, 6 Sand Martin, 36 Swallow and 1 Flava.
Three Juvenile Peregrine were in the Long Nab area and 13 Grey Heron were on Johnson's Marsh.
An interesting record, and a first for the area, was an Ocean Sunfish basking off Long Nab slowly drifting north about 150 meters offshore.

SBN Pelagic

Another Pelagic Trip has been organised for Sunday 31st August sailing from the Harbour at 7.00am. Price will likely be £15.00 each.
Hopefully this next trip will produce good numbers of seabirds and plenty more photograph oppotunities. The highlight of the trip yesterday was a Blue Fulmar which showed incredibly well feeding on the chum just behind the boat, lets hope for something better in August!

The SBN Pelagic went ahead during the morning, it was a very calm and pleasant day out on the sea but clearly the vast majority of seabirds that were in the area last week had cleared off. It was still a very enjoyable morning with the highlight being a Blue Fulmar which, after coming in from the south and keeping its distance, came right into the back of the boat and showed very well over the following 45 minutes, allowing for more than a couple of photos!
It has been suggested that the bird could be of the race minor from Northern Greenland and Baffin Island.
Watches from Long Nab, and whilst at sea, produced the following; (north unless stated) 29 Fulmar + 5 south (including the Blue Fulmar north), 12 Manx Shearwater + 2 south, 99 Gannet + 95 south, 1 Cormorant, 102 Common Scoter + 75 south, 2 Whimbrel south, 1 Little Gull, 3 Black-headed Gull + 2 south, 2 Common Gull + 6 south, 1 Great Black-backed Gull south, 32 Kittiwake, 24 Sandwich Tern + 10 south, 2 Arctic Tern and 2 Puffin + 1 south.
Elsewhere 3 Egyptian Geese, 6 Oystercatcher, 1 Common Sandpiper and 1 Yellow Wagtail were at Wykeham South Lake where a Turtle Dove flew southwest, a Little Egret, 1 Oystercatcher, 7 Snipe and 1 Green Sandpiper were on Johnson's Marsh and 12 Grey Heron and 5 Green Sandpiper were on Johnson's Marsh.

At Crook Ness 2 Storm Petrel were trapped overnight, one at 11.08hrs and the other, a control, at 00.38hrs on 12th.
Also, passing Long Nab (north unless stated) were 12 Fulmar, 54 Manx Shearwater, 87 Gannet, 3 Teal, 4 Common Scoter, 3 Velvet Scoter, 1 Hobby south, 1 Oystercatcher, 2 Whimbrel, 1 Curlew, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Black-headed Gull + 1 south, 1 Common Gull, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 3 Great Black-backed Gull, 7 Sandwich Tern, 7 Arctic Tern, 1700 Auk sp and 7 Puffin.

Another good day over the sea produced the following; (north unless stated) 123 Fulmar + 3 south, 216 Manx Shearwater, 888 Gannet + 64 south, 1 Teal, 1 Tufted Duck south, 142 Common Scoter + 4 south, 1 Velvet Scoter south, 2 Oystercatcher south, 1 Whimbrel, 12 Curlew, 1 Arctic Skua, 28 Black-headed Gull + 9 south, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 3 Common Gull + 1 south, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull south, 5 Great Black-backed Gull + 1 south, 550 Kittiwake, 1 Sandwich Tern + 2 south, 4 Arctic Tern and 19 Puffin.
At least 16 Manx Shearwater and 180 Kittiwake were blogging off Long Nab and a Lesser Whitethroat was in song in Crook Ness.

Elsewhere 52 Oystercatcher were in Cornelian Bay and 14 Tufted Duck, 22 Black-headed Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull were on the Mere.

A slower day for passage but a watch at Long Nab still produced the following (south unless stated) 1 Red-throated Diver, 1 Black-throated Diver in breeding plumage, 4 Fulmar + 18 north, 88 Manx Shearwater north, 385 Gannet + 218 north, 1 Cormorant + 2 north, 4 Common Scoter + 56 north, 3 Curlew + 1 north, 12 Redshank, 8 Black-headed Gull, 3 Common Gull north, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 16 Sandwich Tern + 12 north, and 5 Puffin + 4 north.
Elsewhere a few bits had been grounded by the rain, 4 Garganey were the Highlight at Wykeham South Lake though they were only present for a short time before being flushed by thunder! Also there were 13 Teal, 17 Lapwing, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Common Sandpiper and 2 Redshank as well as 2 Black-tailed Godwit that flew south.
Rudda Road Flash held 7 Lapwing, 1 Dunlin and 1 Redshank and 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Dunlin and 7 Snipe were on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access).

Passing Long Nab (south unless stated) were 20 Fulmar + 24 north, 516 Manx Shearwater + 46 north, 613 Gannet + 304 north, 1 Cormorant, 1 Little Egret, 53 Teal + 17 north, 3 Tufted Duck north, 5 Eider north, 231 Common Scoter + 357 north, 18 Oystercatcher, 1 Golden Plover, 1 Knot, 7 Dunlin + 1 north, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 1 Whimbrel + 2 north, 10 Curlew + 5 north, 175 Redshank, 1 Arctic Skua north, 1 Great Skua north, 1 Little Gull north, 9 Black-headed Gull + 27 north, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull + 1 north, 1 Great Black-backed Gull + 5 north, 35 Sandwich Tern + 5 north, 1 Common Tern + 1 north, 62 Puffin + 44 north, 697 Swift, 4 Sand Martin, 3 Carrion Crow and 2 Starling north.
Elsewhere 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Oystercatcher, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 1 Green Sandpiper and 10 Snipe were on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access), a Snipe was on Johnson's Marsh and 2 Green and 1 Common Sandpiper were on Flotmanby Carr.

It was another good day for passage, Swift numbers were much lower but Wader numbers and variety had increased.
Past Long Nab (south unless stated) were 5 Fulmar + 14 north, 23 Manx Shearwater + 59 north, 1 Cormorant + 1 north, 1 Tufted Duck, 1 Common Scoter + 9 north, 20 Knot, 14 Dunlin, 1 Snipe, 11 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Whimbrel, 30 Redshank, 1 adult Mediterranean Gull in and north, 8 Black-headed Gull + 4 north, 2 Common Gull, 1 Sandwich Tern + 27 north, 9 Puffin + 43 north, 353 Swift + 1 north, 16 Sand Martin and 1 Swallow.

Another good day for passage saw the following, (south unless stated) 1 Red-throated Diver north, 1 Fulmar + 3 north, 1 Manx Shearwater, 5 Cormorant north, 49 Common Scoter north, 6 Oystercatcher, 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Lapwing, 1Dunlin, 1 Whimbrel, 7 Curlew north, 1 Redshank, 2 Black-headed Gull + 12 north, 3 Common Gull + 2 north, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull north, 2 Great Black-backed Gull north, 3 Sandwich Tern north, 8 Puffin north, 1045 Swift + 18 north, 11 Sand Martin, 14 Swallow, 6 House Martin, 65 Starling north, 4 Goldfinch and 8 Linnet + 2 north.
The only other reports during the day were of 3 Eider feeding off Long Nab and a Hobby seen over Snainton.

An interesting day with the first meaningful signs of Autumn.
Passage was steady with the first good Swift count of the year and already larger than any count from last year! On the move (south unless stated) were 2 Fulmar north, 5 Manx Shearwater north, 3 Cormorant, 4 Grey Heron north, 2 Mallard, 2 Common Scoter, 1 Knot north, 3 Curlew + 27 in and west + 39 north, 1 adult Mediterranean Gull north, 11 Black-headed Gull + 16 in and west and 56 north, 8 Common Gull + 2 north, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull + 2 north, 1 Great Black-backed Gull, 12 Sandwich Tern + 20 north, 1 Puffin + 9 north, 802 Swift + 14 north, 7 Sand Martin, 11 Swallow, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 41 Starling and 7 Linnet.
Elsewhere what was probably a different Mediterranean Gull was at Holbeck, the first juvenile Wheatear was seen at Wykeham South Lake where 5 Egyptian Geese, 15 Tufted Duck, 4 Oystercatcher and 3 Little Ringed Plover were also seen and 8 Grey Heron were on Johnson's Marsh.

The month started poorly with no reports received!

A Cruise aboard the Regal Lady has been organised for the evening of Tuesday 9th September sailing at 18.30hrs.
The plan is to sail north beyond Long Nab for some evening birding before returning south towards the Harbour later in the evening. The return journey will include a quiz in the bar for anyone who wishes to take part.

Monday 30th June 2014

The month predictably ended quietly, on the move (north unless stated) were 3 Fulmar, 5 Common Scoter south, 1 Curlew, 21 Black-headed Gull + 3 south, 2 Common Gull, 1 Great Black-backed Gull, 10 Sandwich Tern and 6 Starling.
Two Egyptian Geese and 2 juvenile Yellow Wagtail on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access) and 2 Teal and a Curlew on Flotmanby Carr.

Friday 27th - Sunday 29th June 2014

The 27th produced the following, on the move (north unless stated) were 2 Fulmar, 1 Manx Shearwater, 15 Gannet + 18 south, 2 Curlew, 1 Black-headed Gull, 1 Common Gull + 2 south, 440 Auk sp and 1 Puffin.
And 2 Quail were heard on Fylingdales Moor.
The 29th was a little better, (north unless stated) were 75 Fulmar + 2 south including 1 'Blue' Fulmar, 25 Manx Shearwater, 79 Gannet + 237 south, 3 Teal, 24 Common Scoter + 2 south, 1 Kestrel, 1 Whimbrel, 3 Curlew, 2Black-headed Gull, 2 Common Gull south, 4 Great Black-backed Gull, 510 Auk sp south and 36 Puffin + 1 south.
Elsewhere a Quail was between Silpho and Suffield, 9 Egyptian Geese, 2 Oystercatcher and 5 Lesser Black-backed Gull on Wykeham South Lake and a Teal was on Flotmanby Carr.
