Tuesday 30th April

A Brambling and 2 Egyptian Geese were at Wykeham South Lake this morning, and 2 Tree Pipits were seen in Wykeham Forest. In Seamer, at Metes Lane there was a male Blue-headed Wagtail, and by the 3 ponds at Seamer tip there was a Garden Warbler. A Brambling was seen at the ringing plantation at Long Nab, and an acredula type Willow Warbler was near there, by Cliff Top House. 2 Swifts flew over Crossgates this afternoon, and on South Cliff there were 4 Wheatears at Holbeck, a Whinchat at the Holbeck landslip area, and a Garden Warbler and 2 Lesser Whitethroats near the Italian gardens. 2 Bar-tailed Godwits and 3 Stonechats were spotted at Jackson's Bay, and 18 Whimbrel were seen from North Street in Flixton this evening. Highlights from a BBS square (TA0078) included a Curlew, a Yellow Wagtail, 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 2 Oystercatchers and 16 Stock Doves.

Monday 29th April

A Little Egret, 4 Shelduck and a drake Teal were seen at Johnson's Marsh this morning, while at Wykeham South Lake there were 3 Shelduck, 3 Egyptian Geese, 30+ Sand Martins and 6 Whitethroats. The Cetti's Warbler was still singing at Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 2 Garden Warblers, 10 Reed Warblers, 9 Sedge Warblers, 4 Gadwall, 9 Teal, 3 Snipe and 25 Curlew. The big excitement of the day was a White-tailed Eagle which was spotted flying south over Hovingham Drive and then over Cayton, after which it was not seen again. A Mediterranean Gull was also seen over Cayton, plus another bathing at Burton Riggs. 2 Turtle Doves were present in Staintondale, a Marsh Harrier flew west over Crossgates, and an Osprey was spotted fishing at Wykeham South Lake in the late afternoon. 2 Grasshopper Warblers were present, one of them reeling, at Middle Deepdale this evening.

The Turtle Dove was still in a garden in Pickering this morning. A Hooded Crow flew low over Seamer Tip towards Eastfield, and Greenland Wheatears were in fields east and south of the tip. At Wykeham South Lake there were 3 Egyptian Geese, 2 Little Ringed Plovers and a Dunlin, but no sign of the Long-tailed Duck. This afternoon 5 Bar-tailed Godwits (one in summer plummage) were in Jackson's Bay, and a female Redstart was in the north-south hedge inland from the cliffs there. A pair of Teal, 2 Shelduck and a Snipe were on Cromer Point Pond, and 2 Whimbrel were flushed from the Scalby Lodge Pond by a dog walker. 2 Purple Sandpipers were roosting on the harbour at high tide. In the early evening 2 Common Sandpipers flew into Jackson's Bay, while at Scalby Mills there were 3 Turnstones, 4 first summer Black-headed Gulls, 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 7 Great Black-backed Gulls and 480 Herring Gulls. 2 Ring Ouzels, a Wheatear, a Redstart, a Peregrine, 6 Tree Pipits, a Stonechat and a Cuckoo were spotted in the Newgate Brow area.

A Marsh Harrier was spotted on Flotmanby Marsh this morning, and another possible sighting was made over Valley Road in the afternoon. A Little Egret and 2 Shelduck were on Johnson's Marsh. A Swift was seen over Crossgates in the early afternoon, and another 4 were seen later over Dean Road. At Wykeham South Lake there was a Long-tailed Duck, a Black-tailed Godwit, a Common Sandpiper, a Yellow Wagtail, 4 Egyptian Geese, 3 Whitethroats and a Little Egret (briefly before flying off), while a Whimbrel flew over eastwards. A Turtle Dove was in a garden in Pickering this afternoon, feeding with Collared and Stock Doves. 3 drake Mandarins and a drake Teal were at Harwood Dale Lake this evening.

A male Marsh Harrier passed by Long Nab early this morning, travelling north, and a Cuckoo was reported from the west side of Wykeham Lakes. Wheatears have been seen today at Marine Drive (on the rock armour near lamp post 50), on the North Bay miniature golf course, on Fylingdales Moor (2 individuals), and at Seamer Tip (a Greenland race individual). Also present on Fylingdales Moor were a Ring Ouzel and a Stonechat, and at Seamer Tip there was also a Whinchat by New Dyke. There were 6 singing Lesser Whitethroats in the vicinity of the tip, and 5 Whimbrels and a Green Sandpiper near Star Carr crossroads. A Common Sandpiper was seen at Scalby Mills and a Little Egret at Johnson's Marsh.

A Garden Warbler was at Long Causeway early this morning. At Long Nab there were 2 Wheatears, while 8+ Bottlenosed Dolphins went past northwards and 3 Eiders went south. A Dunlin was at Scalby Lodge small pond, and a Hooded Crow was in the fields north of there. In the afternoon there were 2 Egyptian Geese, a drake Pintail, a Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Sandpipers and 80+ Sand Martins at Wykeham South Lake, while at Northstile pool near Wrench Green there was a Common Sandpiper, 2 drake Mandarins, 3 Swallows and several Sand Martins, plus a Wheatear near Northstile House. A Turtle Dove was reported to have returned to a site in Burniston, and a Common Tern flew over Crossgates towards Seamer. Early evening 3 Wheatears were spotted behind Marine Drive wall.

Highlights from Long Nab this morning included 15 Whitethroats, 10 Eiders drifting slowly south, and a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Whimbrel and 47 Sandwich Terns passing by. 2 Bar-tailed Godwits were also present in Jackson's Bay, and another Whimbrel was seen over Sycarham Wood early afternoon. A Wheatear and 2 Ring Ouzels were spotted at Ravenscar, a Lesser Whitethroat was seen at Thornton Carrs, and a Red Kite was seen south of Brompton and then near Ruston Carr Bridge. Whitethroats were plentiful around Hutton Buscel and Wykeham, and 2 Common Sandpipers were seen at Burton Riggs.

3 Black-tailed and one Bar-tailed Godwits flew south past Long Nab this morning, and a Red Kite flew north. At Castle Hill there were 23 Blackcaps, 3 Willow Warblers, 6 Chiffchaffs, a Wheatear, a Goldcrest and 2 Red-legged Partridge. A Greenshank was at Harwood Dale Lake, a Mediterranean Gull was calling over Seamer Tip main pool, and a Red Kite was spotted west of the Snainton to Yedingham road. A Firecrest was seen/heard throughout the day at Ravenscar, in conifers just north-west of the tea room. The Cetti's Warbler remained at Potter Brompton Carr, plus 2 Reed Warblers, 4 Sedge Warblers, a Wigeon, a Snipe and 16 Curlew. 2 Bar-tailed Godwits and a Ringed Plover were at Jackson's Bay, a Wood Sandpiper was at Johnson's Marsh, and a Water Rail was at the Open Air Theatre.

At Wykeham South Lake this morning there were 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, a Dunlin, a drake Pintail. a Whitethroat and a Yellow Wagtail, plus at least 15 singing Willow Warblers on the west side of the lake. Also there in the evening were 3 Reed Warblers. A Reed Warbler was singing on the north side of Seamer Tip Pool, where there were also 3 Shoveler, 8 Gadwall, 2 Sedge Warblers, a singing Whitethroat and 3 singing Lesser Whitethroats. The Cetti's Warbler was still at Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 3+ Sedge Warblers, a Red Kite, a Reed Warbler, a Whitethroat, 4 Teal and a Shelduck. A Wheatear was in a field near Gristhorpe, a Yellow Wagtail was at Harwood Dale Lake, and a Green Sandpiper was at Cromer Point pond. A Ring Ouzel and 15 Wheatears were seen at Ravenscar, in the field containing a small quarry east of the Stoupe Browe mast. 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 4 Whitethroats, 4 Yellow Wagtails and 3 Wheatears were spotted on the coast between Scalby and Cloughton. At Nabgate there were 2 Tree Pipits, 2 Buzzards, a Crossbill, 4 Siskins and good numbers of Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers.

5 Ring Ouzels were east of the mast in Ravenscar again today, and also in the area were 6 Curlew and 8 Wheatears including one Greenland race male. Another Ring Ouzel was seen flying south past Scalby Lodge pond, where there were 10 Swallows, a Whitethroat, and a Green Woodpecker calling. 5 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh; a Whooper Swan was at Harwood Dale Lake; 2 Sedge Warblers, a Whitethroat and 2 Shovelers were at Seamer Tip Pool; and a Whitethroat and a Lesser Whitethroat were at Burton Riggs. 5 Yellow Wagtails flew south past Long Nab this morning and a drake Goosander flew north west. The Mediterranean Gull was again flying and calling around the Eastfield/Pindar area, a Red Kite flew south over Crossgates, and a Grasshopper Warbler was singing at Deepdale, just north of Eastfield. 5 House Martins flew south past Scarborough College. This evening a male Wheatear and a Chiffchaff were behind the wall on Marine Drive, and on the north side of the Castle Hill there were 6+ Willow Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs and 4 Blackcaps.

Early this morning at Long Nab there were 3 Whitethroats, a Lesser Whitethroat on Rocks Lane, and a Marsh Harrier flew south. A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen and heard singing at Gallows Close play area. An adult Mediterranean Gull was seen flying around Cayton, calling strongly. At Seamer Tip Pools there was a Jack Snipe, a Snipe, a pair of Shovelers, 6 Gadwall, 8 Tufted Duck, 4 Bullfinches and 2 Grey Partridge. A Tree Pipit was singing near the top of Troutsdale.

A Lesser Whitethroat was at Crook Ness early this morning, while a Red-breasted Merganser and a Whimbrel passed Long Nab and a Marsh Harrier flew out to sea there. A Tree Pipit was also seen going south past Crook Ness, and Lesser Whitethroats were present at Scalby Mills and at Seamer Tip. Ring Ouzels were again seen at Ravenscar throughout the day, with the count rising to 9 by early evening, plus 8 Wheatears, 15 Fieldfares and 6 Willow Warblers. Another Wheatear was spotted at Stoupe Brow, plus a Red Grouse and a pair of Stonechats. A Sedge Warbler, 2 Shovelers and 3 Oystercatchers were at Seamer Tip Pool, 9 Brambling were at Hutton Buscel, and a Blackcap was singing on Cockrah Road, West Ayton. In Cornelian Bay there were 6 Sandwich Terns, 3 Common Scoter and a Red-throated Diver.

3 Ring Ouzels were spotted in Ravenscar first thing this morning (2 males and 1 female), and a Harrier (species uncertain) was also seen in the area. The Cetti's Warbler was still present at Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 14 Teal, 2 Oystercatchers and a Willow Warbler. An adult Mediterranean Gull was at Seamer Tip Pool mid-morning before flying off northwards, while another/others were seen flying over 2 houses in Cayton in the afternoon. At Johnson's Marsh there were 2 pairs of Shelduck, 2 Snipe, 5 Teal and a Moorhen. Common Whitethroats were seen in Hutton Buscel and at Snainton golf course, with 2 Oystercatchers also at the latter site. 6 Whimbrel and 2 Corn Buntings flew south at Long Nab this morning and a Brambling was seen at the ringing plantation there. 3 Red Kites were seen over Yedingham at lunchtime. 9 Blackcaps and a Willow Warbler were singing on Castle Hill, and 17 Purple Sandpipers were roosting at the harbour.

Early this morning a drake Eider was seen off Marine Drive, an Osprey flew south past Long Nab and over the castle, and a Lesser Whitethroat flew in off the sea at Long Nab. At Wykeham South Lake there was a Chiffchaff, a Willow Warbler, a Blackcap, a Goldeneye, 8 Tufted Duck, and a trickle of Swallows and Sand Martins passing through. At Seamer Tip Pool the Garganey was back, 14 Arctic Terns flew over eastwards, and there were 3 Willow Warblers, a Jack Snipe and a male Yellow Wagtail. 5 Teal, 15 Tufted Duck, 16 male Blackcaps and a mixture of all 3 hirundine species were at Seamer Road Mere. A Ring Ouzel was spotted feeding in a field south-west of Ravenscar, along with 6 Song and 2 Mistle Thrushes. A male Stonechat was on moorland at Three Lords' Stones, Ravenscar and a Wheatear was in nearby fields. A report came in this evening of a Rose-coloured Starling by the hospice on Throxenby Lane. A busy day!

A male Northern Wheatear was seen this morning on the Marine Drive rock armour, and 3 more were at Long Nab. Also at Long Nab were 7 Blackcaps, 9 Chiffchaffs and a Willow Warbler, while 2 Sandwich Terns flew north and a Puffin flew south. A Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Buzzards and 4 Swallows were at Seamer Tip Pool, and 3 Redwings flew over. 14 Curlew flew north from Seamer Mead. 7 Swallows were seen at Burton Riggs, while 7 Swallows, 4 Shelduck, 8 Teal, 2 Herons and a White Wagtail were at Scalby Lodge Pond. 4 Swallows, 3 House Martins and 5 Grey Wagtails were at Ellerburn fish farm, a Dipper was by the mill in Thornton Dale, and a Little Owl and a Blackcap were on the Carrs.

The drake Garganey remained at Seamer Tip Pool all day today, and 2 Little Ringed Plovers flew south-east over the pools in the late afternoon. 7 Sandwich Terns were feeding in North Bay, 2 Eiders flew north past Long Nab, and a Brambling was seen in Hutton Buscel. At Wykeham South Lake there were 20 Sand Martins, 2 House Martins, 4 Goldeneye, 2 Gadwall, 2 Egyptian Geese and a Pink-footed Goose.

Willow Warblers were seen today at Eastfield industrial estate and at Seamer Tip. One female and 2 male Blackcaps were seen on Heron Lane, Crossgates and a Red Kite was seen at Yedingham. At Wykeham South Lake there were 15 Wigeon, 12 Teal, 3 Goldeneye and 2 Buzzards. Highlights at Long Nab were a Hooded Crow, 5 Sandwich Terns and 2 Common Buzzards heading south, and a Yellow Wagtail heading north. 69 Sand Martins passed by, 56 of them going south, and 93 Carrion Crows passed by, 63 of them going north. A White Wagtail was present near Cliff Top House. A Redstart and 4 Grey Wagtails were seen at Ellerburn/Dalby, and a flock of 25 House Martins was seen going up the valley near Hackness this afternoon.

2 Pink-footed Geese were among a small flock in a field by Seamer Tip Pool this morning. At Wykeham South Lake there were 52 Teal, 5 Shoveler, 3 Goldeneye, 2 Gadwall, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 5 Egyptian Geese, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, a male Pintail and 8 Mute Swans. A ringed Mealy Redpoll was photographed on a garden feeder.

Highlights from Long Nab this morning were 3 Arctic Terns that flew out eastwards and a Great Northern Diver flying north. 12 Purple Sandpipers and 23 Turnstones were at the harbour, while at Wykeham South Lake there were 2 Egyptian Geese, a Pintail, 6 Goldeneye, 6 Great Crested Grebes, and a Golden Plover flew over. A Raven was seen over Harwood Dale heading west, and a Peregrine was seen there too. Late this afternoon there were 6 Swallows and 3 Sand Martins feeding over the pool below North Stile House (south of Wrench Green), where there were also 8 Teal, a pair of Grey Wagtails, a pair of Pied Wagtails, and numerous Mallard ducklings. A Red Kite was present around Ings Farm for about an hour this afternoon.

At Wykeham South Lake this morning there were 16 Tufted Duck, a Little Egret, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Goldeneye, and a Pink-footed Goose. There was a Willow Warbler near Wrench Green, and 4 Buzzards over Seamer Road Mere. 3 Sand Martins were around the cliffs at Cromer Point and 10 Teal were on the pond there, while 3 Manx Shearwaters and a White Wagtail flew north past Long Nab. At Harwood Dale Lake there were 2 Teal, a Snipe, 400 Common Gulls and 12 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. A Green Woodpecker was at Long Causeway, Wykeham Lakes, and a Red Kite was spotted over Wykeham village. The Cetti's Warbler was still at Potter Brompton Carr, singing occasionally.

A Shelduck, a Pintail, 6 Goldeneye, 10 Cormorants, 6 Great Crested Grebes and a Blackcap were seen at Wykeham South Lake this morning. The Cetti's Warbler was singing again at Potter Brompton Carr, where 10 Teal, 17 Fieldfare and a Snipe were also present and 2 Crossbills flew over eastwards. There were 5 Goldcrests, 5 Chiffchaffs, a Wheatear and a Blackcap at Long Nab. At Harwood Dale Lake there were 2 Mandarin, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Wigeon, a Redshank, a Yellow Wagtail, 5 Swallows and 10 Sand Martins. 2 Swallows, a House Martin, a Goldeneye and 2 Teal were seen at Burton Riggs, and a House Martin was back at a breeding site in Valley Road.

Two Swallows were seen at Long Causeway this afternoon, and a House Martin flew east over Crossgates. Blackcaps were seen at Dale End in Hutton Buscel (singing), Burton Riggs and Seamer Tip. 3 Goldeneye were also at Burton Riggs, and a Green Woodpecker was also at Hutton Buscel in Revenge Wood. 24 Purple Sandpipers and 52 Turnstones were roosting at the Harbour, and a Chiffchaff was feeding on the middle pier.

The Cetti's warbler was again singing at Potter Brompton Carr this morning, and a second summer Mediterranean Gull, 3 Swallows and small numbers of Sand Martins were at Wykeham South Lake. A Willow Warbler was singing beside the River Hertford just south of the Stockdales lay-by.

A Pink-footed Goose was seen at Wykeham South Lake this morning along with 3 Egyptian Geese, 3 Goldeneye, 7 Great Crested Grebes and 2 Swallows. A Cetti's Warbler was singing at Potter Brompton Carr, which is a first for this area. Also present were 18 Wigeon, 17 Teal, 4 Snipe and 18 Chiffchaffs; while 3 Fieldfares flew west. A Whooper Swan, 2 Shovelers, a House Martin and 2 Sand Martins were at Harwood Dale Lake this afternoon, and at Ellerburn there were 2 Grey Wagtails, 2 Common Buzzards, 7 Chiffchaffs and a Blackcap.

A Great Crested Grebe in full summer plumage was in the harbour early this morning. At Hilla Green there were 12 Redwings, a Dipper, a pair of Grey Wagtails, a pair of Mandarin Ducks and a Mistle Thrush, while in Wrench Green there was a singing Blackcap. Up to 30 Sand Martins were seen at Wykeham South Lake, plus 2 Swallows, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 5 Goldeneye, 1 Shelduck, 2 Buzzards and a hunting Barn Owl. At Seamer Tip pool there was a Water Rail, and at Burton Riggs there was a Blackcap and a Kingfisher. A male Northern Wheatear was at Long Nab and 2 Chiffchaffs were at Crook Ness. I love this month with all the new arrivals!

An adult Mediterranean Gull flew north-east over Seamer Tip Pool this morning, and a Goosander was present at Burton Riggs. At Harwood Dale Lake in the morning there were 5 Teal, 2 Shoveler, 2 Oystercatchers and a Wigeon. Later in the afternoon a Swallow was seen there, and a single Whooper Swan was in a field nearby.

At Wykeham South Lake there were 8 Goldeneye, 7 Gadwall, 17 Tufted Duck, 6 Mallard, 5 Barnacle Geese, 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Swallows, 16+ Sand Martins, 2 Grey Partridge, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Oystercatchers and 6 Great Crested Grebes. 3 Common Scoters passed Marine Drive southwards, 4 male Blackcaps were seen at Seamer Road Mere, a Sparrowhawk was seen on Limestone Road, and a Swallow was at Folkton sewage works. At Long Nab there were 7 Snipe at the 'scrape', 200 Linnets on the cover crop, and 20 Common Scoter passed by, 17 of them northwards. A Red Kite was seen over Thornton Dale, and a Kingfisher, a Chiffchaff and 3 Grey Wagtails were at Thornton Mill. A Goldcrest and 250 Starlings were on the Castle headland.
