Wednesday 1st January

The new year kicked off with a sighting of a Hooded Crow in Folkton, plus a Buzzard and 80 Pied Wagtails at Bear Bridge. 5 Waxwings were seen in the morning around B&Q and Dunelm, 4 were seen early afternoon on Stepney Drive before being scattered by a Sparrowhawk, and 4 were in the park behind Plover Gardens. 37 Purple Sandpipers were roosting at the harbour, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 19 Tufted Duck, a Chiffchaff, 2 Goldeneye, a Goosander, 3 Teal and a Coot. At Taylor Way there were 5 Common Snipe, a Jack Snipe and a Water Rail, while a Gadwall and a Wigeon were at Seamer Tip pool. At Folkton sewage farm there was a Chiffchaff, and 44 Pink-footed Geese flew over. 2 Little Egrets were on Cayton Carr, and 2 drake Pochards were at Burton Riggs. 39 Pink-footed Geese were seen flying south over the railway station, and were also seen over the Mount, and 38 (the same/different group?) over Folkton. 3 Snow Buntings were on the Cleveland Way by Scalby Lodge pond, while 13 Ringed Plover and a Kingfisher were at Scalby Mills, where 3 Shelduck flew south. 4 Red-throated Divers and a drake Gadwall were in Cornelian Bay, where a Great Northern Diver was spotted flying past south, and a Marsh Tit and 2 Goldcrests were in the ravine. A mixed flock of Chaffinches and Bramblings was seen at Cockmoor Hall, and a Brambling was in a mixed finch flock on the west side of Wykeham Forest, along with a Fieldfare and a Redwing nearby. A female Blackcap was in Falsgrave Park, a Merlin was seen on Thronton Carrs, and 23 Mandarins were on Hackness Lake. At Long Nab there were 16 Curlew in the field next to the car park, and a Dunlin was in Jackson's Bay.
