Saturday 13th June

Today's big excitement was a male Golden Oriole which was initially seen early in the morning in Hutton Buscel churchyard, then later in the morning at Wykeham Lakes, where it was seen and heard several times before disappearing. Also seen at the lakes were 10 Crossbills flying east, a Redshank, 2 Egyptian Geese and a Hobby. A Hobby had also been seen earlier flying north over Burton Riggs, where there were an adult and a second calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull. A female Cuckoo was spotted by Long Lane railway crossing. 4 Sandwich Terns and 3 Puffins flew north past Marine Drive, while a Willow Warbler and a Siskin were the only migrants seen on Castle Hill, together with a Painted Lady and 2 Silver Ys. A Turtle Dove was opposite the Mill Inn in Harwood Dale, and another was singing at Staintondale. 2 Peregrines were seen flying north at cliff top level just north of Long Nab, one of them carrying a pigeon. 9 Eiders also flew north at Long Nab and 7 Curlews flew south. A Green Sandpiper turned up at Johnson's Marsh, where there are still 2 Wigeon. A flock of 16 Long-tailed Tits were at Beast Cliff, Ravenscar.
