Wednesday 30th September

 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were seen again in the Italian Gardens near Holbeck this morning, and another was again near the castle entrance, along with a Chiffchaff. A Great White Egret was at Wykeham South Lake before flying off west, and this afternoon one was at Johnson's Marsh with 18 Grey Herons and a Little Egret. 2 Goldeneye were also at Wykeham South Lake, while 21 Skylarks flew over the lakes south-west in the space of 30 minutes. 6 Mediterranean Gulls were off Holbeck, and at Seamer Tip small pool there were 2 Redwings. At Scalby Mills there were at least 13 Turnstones, 5 Redshank, 15 Oystercatchers, 20 Wigeon and a Grey Wagtail.

Tuesday 29th September

 40+ Long-tailed Tits and a Chiffchaff were in Manor Road Park this morning, and a total of 5 Willow Tits were in the area south of Wrench Green. The 3 Brent Geese were still at Scalby Mills by mid-afternoon along with 30 Wigeon, while 2 Stonechats and 12 Goldfinches were at Scalby Nab but there was no sign of yesterday's Red-backed Shrike. A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen at the far end of the jet ski lake at Seamer Road, while also around the complex were 6+ Chiffchaffs, a Wigeon and a Water Rail. Yellow-browed Warblers were also at Salt Pans Road in Cloughton, at the Long Nab ringing plantation, by the entrance to the castle, at Wykeham Lakes in the car park area, at Boggle Hole, and on South Cliff where 2 were in the Italian Gardens area and another was in the ravine to the north of the Holbeck landslip. Also at South Cliff a Snow Bunting arrived in off the sea and flew north . At Johnson's Marsh there were 55 Teal and a Great White Egret, which then moved to Scalby Mills in the mid-afternoon. A Long-eared Owl was at Crook Ness late this afternoon, last seen at the car park end of the north bank. A Nuthatch was caching acorns in the gabion wall at Plaxton Court, Chiffchaffs were calling on Woodlands Drive, and a Jay and a Bullfinch were on the north boundary of the cemetery.

A good influx of 15 Yellow-browed Warblers. 3 Pale-bellied Brent Geese were at Scalby Mills throughout the day. A Chiffchaff was with a tit flock on Castle Hill, and later a Yellow-browed Warbler was by the castle entrance. 200+ Pink-footed Geese flew south at Long Nab, a Lapland Bunting flew north over the scrape, a Whitethroat and a Stonechat were in the area, and in the ringing plantation there were 3 Chiffchaffs, a Yellow-browed Warbler, a Siskin and a Redwing. More Yellow-browed Warblers were seen along South Cliff: 2 just south of the Italian Gardens, one in the Holbeck area, and 2 in Cornelian Ravine where there were also 2 Blackcaps, a Goldcrest and 2 Chiffchaffs. 52 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh, plus a Great Egret later in the afternoon. At Wykeham Lakes there were 2 Goldeneye, 6 Little Grebes and a Jay at South Lake and 29 Lapwings at East Lake. At Sycarham Wood there were 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps and a Yellow-browed Warbler, while a Snow Bunting was heard calling as it flew high over southwards. In the afternoon 3 Yellow-browed Warblers were seen on Castle Hill, another was near the bridge on Hood Lane, and yet another was at Scalby Beck, where a Whooper Swan flew north. An adult female Red-backed Shrike was spotted at Scalby Nab, and 75 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Troutsdale. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were at Cloughton Wyke and another was seen at Ravenscar, together with a Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaffs, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Blackcaps, 6 Goldcrests and 10 Bullfinches. Passing Long Nab later in the day were 4 Brent Geese, 4 Eiders, a Goosander, 2 Sooty Shearwaters and a Mediterranean Gull. A Black-necked Grebe was seen at Wykeham Lakes.

 A Black-necked Grebe was at Wykeham South Lake. Highlights from seawatching today included a Grey Phalarope which was seen flying north past both Marine Drive and Long Nab. The latter site also recorded Sabine's Gull and Storm Petrel plus 18 Sooty Shearwaters, 5 Velvet Scoters and 5 Little Gulls. A Long-tailed Skua flew north past Marine Drive late morning. At Castle Hill 9 Pink-footed Geese and 3 Crossbills flew south, also 2+ Yellow-browed Warblers, Willow Warbler and 3 Redwings. Another Yellow-browed Warbler was at South Cliff Gardens near The Spa. 100 Pink-footed Geese flew north over East Ayton.

A Yellow-browed Warbler was with the tit flock on the sheltered south side of Castle Hill this afternoon. Nine Pink-footed Geese were at Johnson's Marsh. A European Storm Petrel  was feeding off Marine Drive this morning where highlights from the seawatching there included 168 Sooty Shearwaters, 57 Pale-belled Brent Geese, 54 Barnacle Geese, Pintail, Velvet Scoter, and 3 Purple Sandpipers. Highlights past Long Nab today included 514 Sooty Shearwaters, 84 Manx Shearwaters, 91 Barnacle Geese, 62 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, Great Northern Diver, and a Golden Plover in the stubble field.

 Northerly gales produced the seabirds today; 412 Sooty Shearwaters north past Long Nab, also 35 Great and 23 Arctic Skuas south. Birders at Marine Drive similarly recorded good numbers of the same species. 23 Wigeon were at Johnson's Marsh.

 The Great White Egret was still at Wykeham Lakes, also there 10 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Egyptian Geese (+ 5 goslings), 4 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Wheatears, several Reed Warblers and a family party of Sedge Warblers. Pink-footed Geese were on the move south down the coast with 492 past Ravenscar (+26 north), many of these also observed past South Cliff. A good selection of finches south at Ravenscar (see link) prior to the rain arriving at 09.30am. 13 Wigeon and 27 Teal at Johnson's Marsh.

 A very wet day and less birders out and about today. Wykeham Lakes had a Pink-footed Goose with the Greylags, 3 Egyptian Geese, 9 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Wigeon, 58 Coot, Yellow Wagtail and Blackcap. A Chiffchaff was in East Ayton plus one on the rock armour of the outer harbour. A drake Eider flew south off the harbour. A skein of Pink-footed Geese flew over town in the dark at 8.20 p.m.

A Hawfinch flew south at Ravenscar this morning where there was a good selection of finches on the move including 56 Chaffinches, 3 Bullfinch, 12 Greenfinch, 23 Lesser Redpoll, 103 Goldfinch, 74 Siskin and 58 Crossbills.  A Hobby flew over Hutton Buscel. Two Snow Buntings left fields northwards at Long Nab. At Johnson's Marsh were 24 Wigeon and 32 Teal.

 An arrival of Yellow-browed Warblers with two at Long Nab and one at South Cliff Golf Course. Two Great White Egrets were tracked down the coast from Long Nab, over town, South Cliffe and Knipe Point (later seen over Hunmanby Gap). Another Great White Egret was at Wykeham Lakes. 3 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip pool. 6 Chiffchaffs at Castle Hill where the tit flock held 3 Marsh, 2 Coal, 10+ Blue, 4 Great and 20 Long-tailed Tits plus a Goldcrest. Ducks are increasing at Johnson's Marsh; 51 Teal, 23 Wigeon plus a Snipe. Eider off Marine Drive. Migrants at South Cliff included 10 Blackcaps, Whitethroat, 9 Chiffchaffs, 5 Goldcrests and a Wheatear. 110 Lesser Redpolls flew south.

 Migrants at Long Nab included Pied Flycatcher and Redwing. A Long-tailed Skua flew north. Wildfowl counts at Wykeham Lakes totalled 1000+ Greylag Geese, 200 Canada Geese, 12 Teal and 9 Pochard. Also 7 Great Crested Grebes there. A Brambling was at Scalby Lodge. Grey Plover sound recorded over Peasholm 23.28 hrs.

 The first-winter Caspian Gull was again in fields at Long Nab this morning but no sign of any new migrants at Long Nab or Castle Hill in the easterly winds. A Kingfisher was at the Open Air Theatre, a regular site for this species. A Marsh Tit and 2 Chiffchaffs on the north side of Castle Hill where a single Brent Goose sp. flew north. (A small woodpecker seen in flight today at Wykeham Lakes was probably the Lesser Spotted seen yesterday).

 The first Yellow-browed Warbler of autumn was at Ravenscar this afternoon. A Brambling came in off the sea at Long Nab and continued west. Two Pochard were on Wykeham South Lake, also 3 Reed Warblers still and 2 Marsh Tits. 53 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh. 2 Marsh Tits were at Castle Hill. A Little Egret was still at Brompton Ponds and 3 Jays at Ravenscar. 10 Chiffchaffs around Cloughton Wyke/Hood Lane.

 A juvenile Long-tailed Skua flew north past South Bay presumably one of three seen past Long Nab this morning. Also past Long Nab were 14 Pale-belled Brent Geese and 7 Sooty Shearwaters. A  Great Northern Diver and a Grey Plover flew south past South Cliff.  2 Common Sandpipers were in South Bay. A Ringed Plover and Green Sandpiper were at Wykeham Lakes where an early Brambling flew west mid morning. In Cayton Bay were 2 Wigeon, 9 Ringed Plover and 6 Dunlin. 62 Golden Plover were on Bridestones Moor. A Knot was at Scalby Mills. Very few migrants were found along the coast but single Redstarts were at Cloughton Wyke and Castle Hill. 3 Chiffchaffs and a Marsh Tit were also at the latter site. A Lapland Bunting was at Long Nab.

 A big movement of ducks past Long Nab this morning (967 in total) including 6 Shoveler, 10 Pintail, 307 Wigeon, 447 Teal. Also 3 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 13 Sooty Shearwaters, Hobby and a Curlew Sandpiper. A 1w Caspian Gull was found feeding in fields just north of the observatory and 4 Lapland Buntings were in stubble fields just to the north. 51 Teal were in south Bay this afternoon.  A Chiffchaff and 8 Chaffinches on the south side of Castle Hill. Little Egret and 3 Bar-tailed Godwits at Wykeham Lakes.

 At Wykeham Lakes: two drake Pochard, 5 Common Gulls, 16 Lbb Gulls, 400 Herring Gulls, Yellow Wagtail. A Yellow Wagtail at Cloughton Wyke. A Swift flew over Whin Bank. Highlights from Ravenscar included 6 Coal Tits, 56 Chaffinches, 139 Goldfinches, 33 Siskin, 13 Crossbills south.  A Lapland Bunting flew south over Cromer Point this morning, a Hobby flew west, and 4 Whitethroats were present in the area. A Wheatear was seen on the Marine Drive rock armour opposite lamp post 56. At Scalby Mills this evening there was a juvenile/first calendar year Mediterranean Gull with 60 Black-headed Gulls. A single Ringed Plover was in Jackson's Bay, 9 Curlew were at Scalby Nab, and 26 Turnstones were at the harbour.

 2 Lapland Buntings were seen in the Cromer Point area early this morning, another flew in at Long Nab an hour later, and another plus a Swift flew south through South Cliff. A Hobby also flew in at Long Nab, and a Marsh Harrier was being mobbed by a Peregrine over Roger Trod. A Great White Egret flew south past Long Nab mid-morning, before cutting in towards North Bay. In the Holbeck area there was a Wheatear, 3 Redshank, 3 Gannets, a flock of 60+ House Martins, and a Swift wheeling south, as well as a Red-throated Diver in South Bay. 300 House Martins were feeding over Oliver's Mount, while 100+ House Martins and a few Swallows were seen over Woodlands Cemetery. 623 House Martins were recorded flying south at Ravenscar early morning, together with 2 Sand Martins. Other highlights from Long Nab include a cream-crowned Marsh Harrier, 147 House Martins, 3 Red-throated Divers, 9 Sandwich Terns, a Pink-footed Goose and 92 Great Black-backed Gulls flying south, and 2 Arctic Skuas flying north. 30 Teal in 2 flocks were in Cornelian Bay, a Kingfisher was seen at Folkton Bridge, and a Swift flew over Thornton Dale.

 A Whinchat was caught and ringed at Long Nab scrape this morning, where there were also 8 Redpolls and 3 Whitethroats, plus about 1100+ Linnets in the area. 5 Pink-footed Geese flew south early morning at Long Nab, a Lapland Bunting flew north, and 3 Wheatears were in fields to the north of the observatory and later in the stubble field behind. 2 Wheatears were also on rock armour near the harbour and another opposite lamp post 42 on Marine Drive. A Sparrowhawk was seen at Ravenscar. 18 Collared Doves were at Staintondale. At Wykeham lakes: Great White Egret, 3 Sanderling, Common Sandpiper, Wheatear.

 9 Pink-footed Geese flew south-west over Ravenscar this morning. At Wykeham South Lake there was a Great White Egret, a Common Sandpiper, a Yellow Wagtail, 10 Grey Herons and 2 Gadwall this morning, and this afternoon there were 43 Coot, 6 Great Crested Grebes, a Reed Warbler, a Sedge Warbler, 2 singing Chiffchaffs and 3 Tufted Duck, plus 46 Swallows moving through. 3 Egyptian Geese were at East Lake this afternoon. A Wheatear was in Jackson's Bay, and the Hen Harrier was again in the last field north of the sewage farm. A Whinchat was seen along South Cliff, and 15 Swifts were still feeding around Oliver's Mount with 200 House Martins. A Little Egret was at Johnson's Marsh this afternoon and 2 Greenland Wheatears were at Long Nab, where a Whimbrel and a Swift flew south, and about 35 Knot flew north this evening. An adult Mediterranean Gull was at Seamer Road Mere.

 A Hen Harrier was seen this morning 2 fields north of the road to the sewage works. 512 Meadow Pipits and 12 Swifts flew south through South Cliff, and a Whinchat and a Stonechat were by the golf course, while 180 House Martins and 15 Swifts were feeding between Oliver's Mount and the Esplanade. Highlights from Long Nab this morning include 554 Meadow Pipits, 247 House Martins, 136 Swallows, 78 Sand Martins, 58 Gannets, 51 Linnets, 31 Goldfinches and 2 Red-throated Divers all heading south, plus 29 Fulmars, 15 Sandwich Terns, 2 Whimbrel and 2 Curlew going north. A Peregrine flew in off the sea with a small calidris prey. A Great White Egret was roosting early this evening in pines on the western side of Wykeham South Lake, where a Common Sandpiper was also present. 9 Yellow Wagtails and 38 Pied Wagtails were feeding on the grass by the Wykeham South Lake parking area.

 A Hawfinch was seen in Ravenscar this morning, flying from the cliffs to the Raven Hall Hotel plantation. A Wheatear was also in Ravenscar and a Swift flew south. 2 Red Kites and a cream-crowned Marsh Harrier were spotted over a recently harvested field near Allerston. 6 Wigeon and 28 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh. About 50 House Martins plus a Hobby were over the valley south of Wrench Green near Northstile House this evening. A Great White Egret was seen in a field by Pete's Pool (new balancing pool 100m east of Seamer Tip pool).

A Yellow Wagtail, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Lapwings and 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were at Wykeham East Lake this morning, a Great White Egret was at South Lake, and 80+ House Martins were feeding over the fishing lakes. A Wheatear was near the Long Nab observatory, while 20 Pink-footed Geese flew south in the early afternoon and 2 Pintails flew north. A Whimbrel was seen flying south over Peasholm and a few minutes later over Whin Bank. 93 Pink-footed Geese in 2 skeins flew south through South Cliff. A Little Grebe was sound recorded flying over Peasholm @ 21.36 hrs.

 2 Great White Egrets and 2 Pintails were at Wykeham South Lake this morning, a Little Egret and a Dunlin were at East Lake, and a Reed Warbler was at Match Lake. A Barn Owl and 2 Wheatears were at Long Nab in the morning while a Whimbrel and 6 Wheatears were there in the afternoon. A Harrier species uncertain) flew south past Cromer Point and a Lapland Bunting flew south at Ravenscar. In Jackson's Bay there was a Common Sandpiper, a Bar-tailed Godwit and 23 Turnstones plus Redshanks and Oystercatchers this morning, while this evening there were 37 Oystercatchers and a Dunlin. A Swift flew over The Ivanhoe, Burniston Road and a pair of Sparrowhawks were seen thermalling together over Dean Road. At Johnson's Marsh there were 4 Wigeon and 15 Teal, at Scalby Beck there were 60 Goldfinches, and at the small Scalby Lodge pond there were 120 House Sparrows.

 Highlights seen heading south at Ravenscar this morning include a Great White Egret, 1514 Meadow Pipits, 9 Grey Wagtails, 7 Crossbills and 192 Siskins. A Sand Martin and 2 Shovelers were at Seamer Tip Pool and 6 Curlew were in the fields below. A Great White Egret was at Wykeham South Lake, and in the Scalby Lodge pond area there were 17 Curlew, 2 Whitethroats, 60+ Goldfinches, 53 Tree Sparrows and 23 Oystercatchers, plus small numbers of Swallows moving south. Heading south at Long Nab were a Lapland Bunting, a Tree Pipit, 3653 Meadow Pipits, 12 Redpoll and 6 Yellow Wagtails, while a Goshawk flew north. 18 Bar-tailed Godwits arrived at Cromer Point and 8 Ruff flew north past Crook Ness. 4043 Meadow Pipits and 91 Swifts flew south at South Cliff, while 110 Swifts and 220 House Martins were feeding between Oliver's Mount and the Esplanade. 50+ House Martins and several Swifts were feeding over Woodlands Cemetery, and 10+ Goldfinches were around Plaxton Court. A Scaup was spotted at Wykeham South Lake this afternoon, as well as 3 Great Crested Grebes, 31 Coot and 2 Sedge Warblers. 10 Swifts were over Oliver's Mount this afternoon and 3 were over Dean Road this evening.

 40+ House Martins and 50+ finches in a mixed flock including 34 Goldfinches were seen at Yedmandale Road this morning. 131 House Martins, 114 Swallows, 276 Meadow Pipits, 142 Siskins and 5 Crossbills flew south past Ravenscar, plus 7 Crossbills north. Passing through South Cliff through the morning were 10 Shelduck north, a juvenile Marsh Harrier south, 21 Snipe west after coming in off the sea, 11 Swift south, 11 Grey Wagtails (10 of them going south), 736 Meadow Pipits south, 65 Siskins south and 4 Crossbills north. 19 Grey Herons were at Johnson's Marsh this evening, and 3 Swifts flew south at Long Nab.

2 Wigeon and 2 Great Crested Grebes were at Wykeham South Lake this morning, while at East Lake there were 2 Great Crested Grebes, 25 Lapwings and 8 Herons. Passing through South Cliff were 10 Grey Wagtails (9 south), 4 Flava wagtails south, 325 Meadow Pipits south, 4 Goosanders (out east from the Mere), 9 Swifts south and a Greenshank north. 2 Whinchats, a Stonechat and a Nuthatch were at Holbeck. Passing Ravenscar southwards were a Greenshank, 203 Meadow Pipits, 259 Siskins, 9 Redpoll and 6 Crossbills (and 12 north). A Merlin and 19 Swifts were seen heading south at Long Nab, and a Dunlin and 32 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh. 2 Kingfishers were at the Open Air Theatre lake. At Scampston Park Lake the were 2 juvenile Scaup, a Wigeon, 3 Teal, 18 Gadwall and a Mandarin, while about 10 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were in the Knapton pig fields. A Bittern was sound recorded last night over Crossgates.

Tuesday 1st September

 A Wryneck was spotted this morning on the grassy plateau south of Holbeck car park before moving along the fence line towards the golf course. Also seen there was a Spotted Flycatcher. At Wykeham Lakes there were a pair of Kingfishers, a Greenshank, 6 Cormorants, 2 Shag, 3 Common Sandpipers, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 20+ Herons, 3 Wigeon, 7 Teal and a flock of 20+ Lapwings. 2 Swifts flew over Woodall Avenue; and along South Cliff there were a Garden Warbler and a Nuthatch, while 452 Meadow Pipits and 17 Swifts flew south. A Redstart was in bushes on the cliff top just east of Ravenscar Tea Rooms, and flying past south were 162 Meadow Pipits, 8 Siskins (plus 2 flying north) and 12 Lesser Redpoll (plus 5 north). 17 Teal and a Dunlin were at Johnson's Marsh, while the Hen Harrier and a Marsh Harrier were seen at Long Nab.
