Friday 30th May

 Singing Quails near Ebberston and at Potter Brompton Carr. A White Stork flew west over Brompton late morning, then south-west from Ellerburn towards Marishes at 3pm. A Marsh Harrier, 4 Red-throated Divers flew south at Long Nab, Dunlin and Curlew north. A singing Reed Warbler at Crook Ness. Four pairs of Golden Plovers on Fylingdales Moor. Also at Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Great White Egrets, 5 Little Egrets, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Hobby.  At least one Honey Buzzard from the Raptor Viewpoint, also Red Kite and 11 Crossbills. An Osprey was seen over Low Dalby in the morning, and Ellerburn in the evening, plus another Osprey flew south over Scalby Mills and town at 9pm. Two Little Ringed Plovers at Harwood Dale Lake. At Wykeham East Lake: 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Shelduck, 2 Little Ringed Plovers. At nearby Long Causeway Road; Hobby, 2 Nightjars, 2 Woodcock, Curlew, 2 Garden Warblers, 3 Tree Sparrows. Up to seven Nightjars in Cloughton Woods, plus four in the Hawdale/Givendale areas of Dalby Forest. Six Woodcocks there too.

Thursday 29th May

 An adult Cattle Egret was at Potter Brompton Carr, also there Great White Egret, 6 Little Egrets, 2 Teal, 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Egyptian Geese, Ringed Plover. A Little Egret at Johnson's Marsh. 12 Manx Shearwaters, 6 Puffins, Redshank, Red-throated Diver past Long Nab. A male Marsh Harrier flew NW over Star Carr. Goosander Wrench Green.

Wednesday 28th May

 Two Honey Buzzards again from the Wykeham forest Raptor Viewpoint, also 5 Ravens. At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Egyptian Geese, Teal, 2 Ringed Plovers, Little Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Harrier, Great White Egret, 5 Little Egrets, and a Hobby. Three Nightjars in Harwood Dale Forest, also Tawny Owl, Cuckoo, and Oystercatcher over.

Tuesday 27th May

 Five Cuckoos in the Harwood Dale Forest/Helwath Beck area. A Little Egret at Johnson's Marsh. Two Little Ringed Plovers at Harwood Dale Lake, plus 3 at Wykeham East Lake. Also at the latter site were 2 Gbb Gulls and a Kingfisher. A Turtle Dove at the Mill Inn, Harwood Dale. Good numbers of Swifts over the town today. A Red Kite at Ellerburn. The pale male Honey Buzzard from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint.

 Three Honey Buzzards from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint. Two Ringed Plovers flew north at Long Nab. Lesser Whitethroat still at the north side of Castle Hill. A Red Kite over Seamer Moor Lane.

Sunday 25th May

 A Reed Warbler at Scalby Lodge, singing in "Trough Gully". A singing Corn Bunting on wires at Long Nab. Two Little Ringed Plovers at Wykeham East Lake. Three Honey Buzzards continue to be seen from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint (male + 2 females). A Hobby over the Mill Inn, Harwood Dale. Two churring Nightjars in Wykeham Forest plus several Woodcock. An Osprey was seen over Ellerburn fish farm in the evening. A pair of Whinchats on Fylingdales Moor at Tim Wash Slack.

Saturday 24th May

 Three Honey Buzzards (male + 2 females) at the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint, also Red Kite.  At Wykeham Lakes: male Marsh Harrier, Red Kite, 2 Dunlin and a Cetti's Warbler near the park entrance. A Cetti's Warbler , Yellow Wagtail, 3 Reed Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers, Little Grebe, 4 Gadwall Seamer tip pools. Turtle Dove at the Mill Inn.

Friday 23rd May

 The pair of Honey Buzzrds again from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint (an unconfirmed report of a second male). At Wykeham East Lake: 2 Shelducks, 333 Herring Gulls, 6 Lbb Gulls, Gbb Gull and a Common Gull, a Little Owl by the entrance.  A Red Kite north of Wykeham village. A Cuckoo and 2 pairs of Stonechats at Saltergate. A singing Stonechat in North Bay. Three Nightjars in Wykeham Forest.

Thursday 22nd May

    The Honey Buzzard pair were again seen regularly from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint, a Spotted Flycatcher by the car park. A Blue Fulmar flew north past Long Nab. A Willow Tit, 4 Tree Pipits, 5 Crossbills in the Dalby/Newclose Rigg area. Two Little Ringed Plovers Harwood Dale Lake. A cream crown Marsh Harrier flew west at Low Marishes. A Kingfisher, Cuckoo, and two Reed Warbler territories at Selley Bridge Farm. At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Wigeon, Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Sandpipers, 3 Great White Egrets, 4 Little Egrets, 25 Swifts. Plenty of observers out searching for Nightjars; Harwood Dale Forest (3), Cloughton Woods (1), Wykeham Forest (2), Broxa Forest (3). Also Cuckoos in Harwood Dale Forest and Broxa Forest.

Wednesday 21st May

The Honey Buzzard pair continued to perform well over the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint. Also seen there were an escaped Harris Hawk, Hobby, and Willow Tit. Past Long Nab were 44 Common Scoter, 5 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Red-throated Divers. Five Turtle Doves in an area south of Dalby Forest. 5+ Nightjars reported from Wykeham Forest and 3 from Harwood Dale Forest.

Tuesday 20th May

The pale male Honey Buzzard had returned (9th consecutive season) with last year's female. Both showed extremely well from Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint, twice seen carrying frogs! Also Raven, several Goshawks and Crossbills, plus Willow Tit there. A "cream crown" Marsh Harrier flew east.

Monday 19th May

A female Honey Buzzard was photographed from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint today. 31 Barnacle Geese, Corn Bunting and 3 Ringed Plover flew north past Long Nab, 265 Swallows, 23 House Martins flew south.  A Spotted Flycatcher at Bridestones/Low Staindale car park. Cuckoo and 3 Crossbills at Crosscliffe, Dalby Forest. Two Cuckoos, Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat at Jugger Howe Moor. 78 Swallows, 31 House Martins, and a single Barnacle Goose (NW) moved past Long Nab. Seven Black-tailed Godwits at Wykeham East Lake. A Red Kite over Folkton Water Treatment. At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Wigeon, Ringed Plover, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 6 Black-tailed Godwits, Wood Sandpiper, 3 Great White Egrets, 2 Little Egrets, Red Kite. Two churring Nightjars and roding Woodcock at Givendale, Dalby Forest.

 A ringtail Hen Harrier flew east over North  Moor Road, Wykeham. A Barnacle Goose at Scalby Mills. Two Little Ringed Plovers at Harwood Dale Lake. Past Long Nab: 25 Common Scoters, 3 Eiders, Sanderling, 6 Whimbrel, 8 Puffins, 32 Manx Shearwaters. A Great White Egret, Little Ringed Plover, and probable Temminck's Stint at Potter Brompton Carr.

 A Great White Egret again at Harwood Dale Lake. Past Long Nab: 8 Manx Shearwaters, 28 Common Scoter, 4 Puffins. At Potter Brompton Carr: 4 Egyptian Geese, 41 Mute Swans, Mandarin, Water Rail, Wood Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, 2 Great White Egrets, 3 Little Egrets, Cuckoo. Lbb Gulls nest building on Highfield. Three Cuckoos, several Tree Pipits, 2 Stonechat territories Langdale Forest. Cuckoo Helwath Beck. Little Ringed Plover Wykeham East Lake.

 At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Garganey, Mandarin, 2 Goosanders (over), 3 Water Rails, Wood Sandpiper, Ringed Plover, Hobby, Cuckoo. 15 Manx Shearwaters north past Long Nab, 4 Eiders flew south. A Whimbrel on rocks below the observatory. An Arctic Skua flew north past Marine Drive. Six Stock Doves near Stepney Farm. A Nightjar churring above the visitor centre at Low Dalby.

Wednesday 14th May

 

A Spoonbill at Johnson's Marsh, left north mid-morning, also seen over Long Nab. It made it's way south to Filey Dams. Also a Green Sandpiper and Great White Egret at Johnson's Marsh, the egret being seen later at Harwood Dale Lake. A Turtle Dove was seen at the feeders opposite the Mill Inn. Two Garden Warblers, Sedge Warbler and a Gadwall with a brood of 3 ducklings. Four Mute Swan cygnets at Taylor Way pool. Five Manx Shearwaters flew north at Long Nab, 2 Gadwall flew south.

     Six Spoonbills flew north at Cornelian Bay in the evening plus one was at Potter Brompton Carr early morning. Also at the latter site: Wood Sandpiper, Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Water Rail, 3 Great White Egrets, Cetti's Warbler. Six Ravens from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint. A Redwing was c1km north of Wykeham village along Wykeham Lane. A Cuckoo heard at Low Dalby. A daytime churring Nightjar plus a Willow Tit at Givendale, Dalby Forest. Two Greenshank at Wykeham East Lake. A Green Woodpecker at Ganton golf course. A singing Lesser Whitethroat at Hairy Bob's Cave, Castle Headland. A singing Whinchat by the road at Eller Beck, Fylingdales Moor. Two Little Ringed Plovers at Harwood Dale Lake. Cuckoo and Green Woodpecker at Helwath Road. A Turtle Dove at Langdale End. At Troutsdale Moor: Redstart, Willow Tit, 5 Garden Warblers, Spotted Flycatcher, 12 Crossbills and Raven.

A Honey Buzzard flew north over Cloughton village late morning. A White Wagtail at Johnson's Marsh. A Wood Sandpiper and Little Ringed Plover at Harwood Dale Lake. Another Little Ringed Plover at Cornelian Bay before flying north. Two Little Ringed Plovers and 2 Shelducks at Wykeham East Lake. At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, 3 Great White Egrets, Marsh Harrier. Three Spotted Flycatchers at Turkey Carpet (Broxa Forest). Six Stock Doves in a Burniston garden. Three + Cuckoos at Jugger Howe Moor. Nightjars reported back at Bickley.

Sunday 11th May

Eight Barnacle Geese and a Red Kite flew north at Long Nab, 165 Swallows moved south. A Marsh Harrier flew east over Crossgates. A Wood Sandpiper at Johnson's Marsh. Two Cuckoos, Turtle Dove, 2 singing Willow Tits, 4 Tree Pipits, Redstart, Redpoll, and several Crossbills and Siskins Harwood Dale Forest (Helwath Road end). Towards the south end of Harwood Dale Forest: Turtle Dove, Spotted Flycatcher, Tree Pipit, Garden Warbler.  A dark Honey Buzzard over Wykeham Forest. At the north end of Helwath Beck: 2 Spotted Flycatchers, Redstart, Green Woodpecker, 2 Cuckoos. The Mute Swans at Seamer Tip pool have ten new arrivals!

Two Garganey, and a Wood Sandpiper at Potter Brompton Carr. A Turtle Dove in Harwood Dale Forest, plus several Tree Pipits and 2 Cuckoos. A Marsh Harrier flew north at Long Nab, 25 Sandwich Terns, 116 Swallows, 11 House Martins, 3 Yellow Wagtails, Corn Bunting south. A Spotted Flycatcher at Wrench Green. A Greenshank heard over Low Marishes. A Hobby over Allerston.

A Red Kite seen circling over Wykeham village. A Merlin flew over Scalby Beck. South past Long Nab: Little Egret, 49 Swallows, Corn Bunting. Turtle Dove in Broxa Forest, plus Willow Tit and Redstart. A Turtle Dove singing in Cloughton. Two Willow Tits in Wykeham Forest. A Spotted Flycatcher in Forge Valley. At Wykeham Lakes: 2 Shelduck, 4 Teal, Little Ringed Plover, Curlew, Yellow Wagtail, 6 Tree Sparrows (near entrance). Two Great White Egrets, Marsh Harrier Potter Brompton Carr. Common Sandpiper Johnson's Marsh. Egyptian Goose over Cayton Bay. In the evening a Nightjar was heard near the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint car park.

Thursday 8th May

    A CATTLE EGRET at Star Carr was only the seventh district record. Three Wood Sandpipers, Ruff, 2 Little Ringed Plovers were at Potter Brompton Carr. At Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint: Raven, 2 Goshawks, 4 Garden Warblers, male Whinchat, and plenty of Crossbills. Grasshopper Warblers were at Scalby Beck and Scalby Ness. Two Whinchats (male and female) at Jackson's Bay. Four purring Turtle Dove at the Helwath Road, plus a short burst of churring from a Nightjar, Cuckoo, two displaying Redpolls, three singing Tree Pipits, and a Redstart.  A Turtle Dove at Burniston near the lime kiln. At Wykeham Lakes: 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Common Sandpipers, 6 singing Reed Warblers East/March lakes. Ten Swifts over Thornton le Dale. Common Sandpipers at Staindale Lake and Johnson's Marsh. Three Sanderling flew north at Long Nab. Good numbers of Swifts back over town.

Wednesday 7th May

Moving north past Long Nab: Ringed Plover, 3 Whimbrel, Common Tern, 14 Sandwich Terns, 2 Manx Shearwaters, Lesser Whitethroat, the latter observed "hedge hopping". A Little Owl along Rocks Lane. A Snipe and Common Sandpiper new in at Johnson's Marsh. Three Cuckoos, 54 Crossbills (many juvs) at Sneaton Forest. Five Whimbrel at Cayton Carrs. A Hobby flew over Crossgates.

Tuesday 6th May

A Hobby at Eller Beck. The Grasshopper Warbler still at Scalby Ness. Redstart still singing along the Wrench Green to Northstile Track, also Tree Pipit and 2 Garden Warblers. A pair of Tawny Owls heard in Burniston. A Sedge Warbler at the Open Air Theatre reed bed. A count of Redstarts in Scar and Castlebeck Woods revealed six males and a female, also Cuckoo and Spotted Flycatcher. At Potter Brompton Carr: Pink-footed Goose, 2 Wood Sandpipers, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Redshank, 5 Great White Egrets, Cetti's Warbler. Three Swifts at the rugby club.

 The Wood Sandpiper was still at Potter Brompton Carr, also 4 Marsh Harriers. An Arctic Skua flew north past Long Nab plus 18 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Red-throated Divers and a flock of 10 Turnstones north. A Common Sandpiper at Burton Riggs. At Wykeham Lakes: 2 Little Ringed Plovers, Common Sandpiper, White Wagtail.

Saturday 3rd May

Wood Sandpiper, 2 Ruff at Potter Brompton Carr. The Wood Sandpiper was still at Johnson's Marsh. A Little Ringed Plover, Cuckoo, Sedge Warbler, and Lesser Whitethroat at Harwood Dale Lake. A Common Crane flew east over Rillington mid-morning. Two Whimbrel, 2 Curlew over Seamer Meads. A Hobby was seen at Ellerburn. A Greenshank flew north at Yons Nab.

Friday 2nd May

 A Hooded Crow flew south past Long Nab early morning, Wheatear and Sedge Warbler present. A Garden Warbler at Centenary Wood (Scalby Beck). At Wykeham Lakes: 2 Egyptian Geese, Little Egret, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, White Wagtail, Little Grebes feeding 3 young (Match Lake), 2 Yellow Wagtails. More Swift arrivals reported. Six House Martins over Scalby, plus 2 Low Dalby. Two Cuckoos Helwath beck area. Whimbrel at North Street, Flixton. A Wood Sandpiper and Green Sandpiper at Johnson's Marsh. A Nightjar churring at Givendale, Dalby Forest. A pair of Mandarins at Scalby Beck.

    A male Ring Ouzel at Helwath Beck left north-west. Also there were two singing Spotted Flycatchers. A Turtle Dove again at the Mill Inn, plus one singing near Harwood Dale Lake. Two Common Cranes spent the morning at Folkton Carr. At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Barnacle Geese (flew east), Wood Sandpiper, 6 Ruff, Greenshank, 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Great White Egrets. A male Pied Flycatcher was at Long Nab (Hundale gully). A Grasshopper Warbler at Scalby Ness. Little Ringed Plover, 2 Egyptian Geese, 6 Teal Wykeham East Lake, 5 Common Sandpipers on the Water Sports Lake.  A Little Ringed Plover at Johnson's marsh early morning. A pair of Garganey were at Seamer tip pool, also Cetti's Warbler. Two Cuckoos at Jugger Howe Moor. A Whinchat was observed flying in off the sea at Yons Nab, also 2 Wheatears present and 16 Whimbrel flew west.
