Tuesday 30th September

 A female/immature Scaup off Scalby Ness/Mills this morning was seen leaving north @ 12.30pm. A Long-tailed Duck flew south off Cromer Point early evening. The Bar-tailed Godwit still present in Jackson's Bay. Lesser Whitethroat still at Long Nab (Cliff Top House); a ringtail Hen Harrier flew north over the sea, and 126 Pink-footed Geese moved over (90 north, 36 SW), plus a BASKING SHARK moved south (scarce in the North Sea). Little Egret, Kingfisher, 4 Common Buzzards, 5 Herons, 5 Little Grebes, 50 Siskin at Ellerburn. Three Little Egrets and a Great White Egret at the River Hertford by Folkton Water Treatment plant. A Cetti's Warbler at the Open Air Theatre reed bed. At Wykeham East Lake: 69 Teal, Pintail, 7 Wigeon, 25 Lapwing. A report of an eagle sp sat at the side of the A64 near Potter Brompton at 18.10 hrs.  Single Great White and Little Egrets plus 2 Redshank, 5 Marsh Harriers at Potter Brompton Carr. A Redwing flew SW over Johnson's Marsh plus one in a Burniston garden. 225 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Allerston. 50 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Sandwich Terns south past Long Nab, 13 Rock Pipits (+2 south) north. The Lesser Whitethroat still at Cliff Top House. At Wykeham Lakes: 30 Wigeon, 54 Teal, Water Rail, 5 Common Buzzards, Lbb Gull, 6 Siskin, Redpoll.  A Raven over Ravenscar plus 3 in Troutsdale. In Jackson's Bay: 14 Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Little Egret, 9 Stonechats.

At Seamer Road Mere: 4 Teal, 15 Gadwall, 30 Tufted Ducks, 15 Mute Swans, Heron, 5 Cormorants, 3 Little Grebes, 77 Coot, 54 Moorhen, Kingfisher. At Jackson's Bay: Bar-tailed Godwit, 11 Ringed Plovers, 2 Dunlin and a Knot. A Green Sandpiper at the oxbow lake in Troutsdale.

Monday 22nd September

 Highlights past Long Nab included a European Storm-petrel, 5 Sooty and 17 Manx Shearwaters, Little Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Velvet Scoter, 5 Arctic Skuas and 4 Great Skuas. The Snow Bunting was again by the Observatory in the morning, and a Whooper Swan was in the fields by the car park. A Little Egret and Kingfisher at Brompton Ponds. Twelve Pink-footed Geese flew over Thornton Carrs, also a Barn Owl hunting there. At Wrench Green: a male Goshawk, 16 Siskin, Dipper and Grey Wagtail. A Raven heard at Sand Dale, Dalby Forest, and to seen over Low Dalby.  An unseen skein of Pink-footed Geese over Peasholm. Five Willow Tits, 3 Marsh Tits, Crossbill at Low Dalby. A Goosander, 17 Gadwall, Little Grebe at Seamer Road Mere. Two Wigeon, 6 Teal at Wykeham East Lake. Six Common/Arctic Terns flew south off the harbour. Two Knot, and a 1cy Caspian Gull in Jackson's Bay.

 Highlights past Long Nab included 4 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, Whimbrel, a juvenile Honey Buzzard (south over the sea @ 10.25am), 2 juvenile Long-tailed Skuas, 22 Arctic Skuas, 8 Great Skuas, 3 European Storm-petrels, 4 Sooty Shearwaters, 11 Manx Shearwaters, 53 Red-throated Divers. A Snow Bunting was feeding by the Observatory. 40+ Skylarks at Suffield Ings. Three Willow Tits, 2 Marsh Tits, 2 Nuthatch, Crossbill at Howl Dale. Whinchat and 2 Wheatears at Scalby Lodge. Two Dippers by the pub at Scalby Mills. Two Wheatears at Ravenscar. A Red Kite at Ellerburn. 25 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Allerston.

An Egyptian Goose at Wykeham East Lake. Green Sandpiper at Harwood Dale Lake and two in Troutsdale. A Great Skua in South Bay.

 Highlights past Long Nab included Osprey, 143 Pink-footed Geese, 34 Red-throated Divers, 1cy Caspian Gull, 15 Swifts, 1554 House Martins, 8 Sand Martins, 765 Meadow Pipits. One Wheatear there. Several other areas saw southbound Pink-footed Geese: Newby (35), Burniston (38), Allerston (74), Ellerburn (270), Thornton le Dale (110), Dalby (240), Fylingdales Moor (150). The juvenile Cuckoo remains in Burniston village. The Little Ringed Plover is still at Wykeham East Lake. A 1cy Caspian Gull at Scalby Mills. Little Egret at Jackson's bay / Scalby Beck. Two Raven, 4 Willow Tits and a Spotted Flycatcher at Ellerburn,

 Highlights past Long Nab today included a juvenile Honey Buzzard, 95 Pink-footed Geese, 23 Swifts, 2610 House Martins, 30 Sand Martins, 770 Swallows, 2785 Meadow Pipits, 135 Siskins. Three Green Sandpipers at Harwood Dale Lake. A juvenile Cuckoo in Burniston village. A Little Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, 7 Gadwall and Wheatear at Wykeham East Lake. Other southbound skeins of Pink-footed Geese included 40 over Crossgates, 24 over West Ayton, 17 over Staintondale, 57 over Oliver's Mount, 63 over Ravenscar, 100 over Ox-Pasture, and an unseen skein over the town at night. Two Swifts feeding over Johnson's Marsh. A Goosander off Scalby Mills/Ness, and Whimbrel heard there. Three Litttle Egrets in the Brompton area. A redhead Goosander south past Yons Nab and a drake over Gristhorpe village. Two Wheatears at Scalby Lodge, Knot and Dunlin in Jackson's Bay.

 Belated news of a juvenile Cuckoo at Salt Pans Lane, Cloughton 6th-9th September. A Whinchat at Scalby Lodge and Goosander at Scalby Beck. At Potter Brompton Carr: Great White Egret, 4 Marsh Harriers, Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, 450 House Martins and 60 Swallows. Two 1cy Caspian Gulls at Scalby Mills. A Swift over Peasholm. 10 Turnstone and 3 Ringed Plover at Jackson's Bay. A flock of c30 Mistle Thrush at Wrench Green, also 3 Dippers and 2 Willow Tits. A Swift flew south at Long Nab. At Harwood Dale Lake: 3 Green Sandpipers, 13 Teal, Merlin, Stonechat, and Grey Wagtail. Two Red-throated Divers in South Bay. At Wykeham East Lake: Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper and 7 Gadwall.

 Four Goldcrests were new in at Long Nab, also one at Scalby Beck. Five Goldcrests and a Dipper in Woodlands Ravine. Two Swifts were feeding along the cliffs at Long Nab. A Stonechat at Marine Drive. Two Swifts, 20 Swallows, 20 House Martins, 2 Sand Martins feeding at Jackson's Bay. At Wykeham East Lake: 2 Egyptian Geese, Little Egret, Shelduck, 3 Teal, 3 Gadwall, Common Sandpiper, and a Ruff. Ten Swifts flew south at Cromer Point, a Wheatear at the cliff tops.

At dusk Scalby Mills: Arctic Tern, 9 Common Terns, 31 Sandwich Terns roosting with 310 Black-headed Gulls.

 Two juvenile Curlew Sandpipers still at Potter Brompton Carr, also 5 Greenshank(4 flew SW), Wood Sandpiper, 2 Great White Egrets, 5 Marsh Harriers, Sedge & Reed Warblers, Cetti's Warbler, Redstart, Wheatear, 3 Whinchats. The first Pink-footed Geese of autumn were on the move, 104 south over Long Nab, 45 over West Ayton, and 25 over Scalby Lodge. A Sanderling in Jackson's Bay and 3 Wheatears nearby. Another Wheatear at Long Nab where southerly movements included a Pale-bellied Brent Goose, 11 Swifts, 1,242 Meadow Pipits, 16 Redpolls, 46 Siskins. At Wykeham East Lake: Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plover, Redshank and a 2cy Yellow-legged Gull. an Arctic Skua in Cayton Bay. Five Common Terns feeding off Marine Drive, also 2 Wheatears. 150 Linnets at Cromer Point.

 A big day of movement along the coastal strip. Long Nab saw 2,540 Meadow Pipits south, also 374 House Martins, 32 Swifts, and a Little Egret. At South Cliff: 211 Siskins, 2 Crossbills flew south. A 1cy Caspian Gull was lingering offshore at Long Nab. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Wrench Green. Thirteen Grey Partridges at Cayton Bay. A Curlew Sandpiper was in Gristhorpe Bay. A Kingfisher at Throxenby Mere. At Wykeham East Lake: Shelduck, 5 Shoveler, Goldeneye, Little Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper, and Hobby. An Egyptian Goose at the Water Sports Lake. Knot, Sanderling, 6 Ringed Plover, 8 Turnstone, Whinchat, 2 Wheatears, Whitethroat in the Jackson's Bay / Scalby Lodge area.

Two Red Grouse were seen at the Jugger Howe Nature Trail (no parking at the site at the moment). A Kingfisher at Peasholm Glen. At Wykeham East Lake: 7 Shoveler, 6 Teal, Little Ringed Plover, 8 Lapwing, 11 Tufted Duck. A Red Kite at Dalby Forest. At Scalby Mills: 4 Curlew, 3 Redshank, 9 Oystercatchers, 3 Turnstone, 4 Herons. A Swift south over Burniston. Highlights moving south past Long Nab included 52 Swifts, 480 House Martins, 15 Sand Martins, 6 Arctic Terns.

 Two juvenile Curlew Sandpipers at Potter Brompton Carr flew off west. Also the Wood Sandpiper still present. Past Long Nab were a Little Gull, 7 Arctic Terns, 5 Arctic Skuas, 1cy Caspian Gull, and a Whimbrel. A Little Egret at Brompton Ponds. At Wykeham East Lake: Greenshank, Little Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper, Redshank, Hobby, 1cy Caspian Gull, and a Corn Bunting in fields by the entrance. Three Wigeon, Whimbrel, Little Egret, 2 Wheatears in the Jackson's Bay area. Two Stonechats on the rock armour at Marine Drive. One Osprey still present in the Ellerburn valley.

 A small influx of drift migrants in the south-east winds. Two Pied Flycatchers and a Redstart were at Ravenscar. Three Whinchats at Cloughton Wyke plus a further 3 at Long Nab plus a Wheatear. A Redstart and 2 Spotted Flycatchers at Harland Wood. A Ruff was on the rocks in Burniston Bay. A first-winter Caspian Gull on South Bay beach, possibly a second bird seen later at Holbeck. Two Marsh Harriers, Peregrine and 2 Great White Egrets at Potter Brompton Carr. Two Kingfishers at Throxenby Mere. A Great White Egret at Seamer Road Mere. Four Common Sandpipers and a Purple Sandpiper in South Bay. A Great Crested Grebe on the sea off Long Nab, 22 Curlews in the stubble fields and a Whimbrel flew north. An unringed  first-winter Caspian Gull at Scalby Mills, also 16 Dunlin. Spotted Flycatcher, 8 Nuthatch, 26 Chiffchaffs, 7 Bullfinch, 2 Marsh Tits, Crossbill along the Haygate circuit at Dalby Forest.  A Little Stint at Wykeham East Lake, also there a Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Ruff, Green Sandpiper, 3 Egyptian Geese, 19 Teal , 4 Shelduck, Hobby and a Lesser Whitethroat. A Caspian Gull (first-winter) followed a shellfish boat south past Long Nab, possibly the same seen at Scalby Mills later in the day. A juvenile Roseate Tern flew south past Long Nab with 4 juvenile Common Terns, also moving south were 4 Shelduck, 221 Teal, and 3 Whimbrel (+ 1 north). At Scalby Mills: 2 Knot, 26 Redshank, 5 Turnstone, 21 Teal, c20 Common Terns, plus a Whimbrel NW over. A common Sandpiper in Jackson's Bay. Fifteen Curlew at Ravenscar.

 A Pied Flycatcher was seen at the south-west side of South Cliff Golf Course. Two Green Sandpipers, a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover (over), 58 Lapwing, Ruff, Dunlin, and 3 Egyptian Geese at Wykeham East Lake. A Willow Tit at Reasty car park, Broxa Forest. Two Common Buzzards, 6 Swifts, 80 House Martins, 29 Meadow Pipits flew south at Long Nab. A Willow Warbler at Crook Ness. Brompton Ponds: Little Grebes with one new chick, Little Egret, 2 Snipe, Grey Wagtail and Kingfisher. A Turtle Dove at North Lodge Farm near Snainton. Two Swifts south over Burniston. A Hobby flew east over Newby. A first-winter Caspian Gull at Scalby Mills in the evening had been ringed in Holland near Amsterdam. At Seamer Road Mere: 34 Tufted Ducks, 6 Gadwall, juvenile Water Rail, Blackcap. 200 Rooks roosted at Cayton. 28 Swifts feeding between Cornelian Bay and Oliver's Mount.

Monday 1st September

 The Osprey remains in the Ellerburn valley, Dalby Forest, also a Hobby there. Swifts are still evident; one at Harwood Dale, one south at Long Nab, two over Oliver's Mount, two over Prospect Road, one at Wrench Green,  and three over Dean Road Cemetery. The adult Roseate Tern remains in the Scalby Mills area, seen on the rocks at Scalby Ness. A Little Egret, Dunlin and Ruff at Wykeham East Lake. A Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper at Jackson's Bay. A Spotted Flycatcher at Staindale Lake, Dalby Forest. Four Willow Tits (all sperate locations) in the Wrench Green/ eastern Wykeham Forest area, also 4 Marsh Tits, and Kingfisher. A Caspian Gull and Pintail flew south at Long Nab. Green Sandpiper at Harwood Dale Lake. Five Whimbrel flew west over the Mill Inn, Harwood Dale. Eight Marsh Harriers at Potter Brompton Carr.

An adult Roseate Tern was enjoyed by many at Scalby Mills on our evening Scarborough Birders' meet. Also there 20 Sandwich, and 15 Common Terns plus an Arctic Skua offshore.  At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Shelduck, Shoveler, 3 Ruff, 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 60 Goldfinches. 18 Oystercatchers, Curlew and Common Sandpiper in Jackson's Bay. A Green Sandpiper at Harwood Dale Lake. A Whinchat at Reasty Bank ridge, Broxa Forest. Two Swifts at Scampston Hall park. Two Caspian Gulls (juv + 1cy) were at Seamer Road Mere, also 41 Tufted Ducks, 35 Gadwall, 5 Teal, and 6 Cormorants (at least 4 sinensis race). Six Swifts were at Ravenscar plus one over Ramshill. A Bar-tailed Godwit in South Bay, and Arctic Skua offshore there. Two Sooty Shearwaters flew south off Marine Drive. A diver sp. flew west over Crossgates mid-morning with 20 Cormorants. Two Shoveler, 18 Teal, Ruff and Dunlin Wykeham East Lake. One Osprey seen in the Ellerburn valley / Sand Dale area of Dalby Forest, also two Hobby and 3 Ravens.  A Yellow Wagtail at Harwood Dale Lake. A Hobby chasing Linnets at Cromer Point. At Long Nab; a juvenile Caspian Gull on rocks, Whimbrel south, and juvenile Merlin lingering near the Observatory. 24 Turnstone in Jackson's Bay. Three juvenile Goshawks entertaining observers for prolonged periods from Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint, also 3 Raven. A Hobby flew west at Troutsdale. Green Sandpiper at Brompton Ponds plus Kingfisher. Pintail, Wigeon and Whimbrel north past Long Nab. A Greenshank flew over Osgodby.

 The two Ospreys were again in the Ellerburn/Sand Dale area of Dalby Forest. Two Red Kites over Staintondale. Five Swifts SW over Burniston. Six Whimbrel, 4 Swifts flew south past Long Nab, a Wheatear was near the observatory, and Pied Flycatcher at Hundale. Three Ruff and a Dunlin at Wykeham East Lake. Three Marsh Harriers, Ringed Plover, Great White Egret, Swift and Sedge Warbler at Potter Brompton Carr.

 A Greenshank flew in off the sea at Long Nab, also 2 Whimbrel south, a Puffin and juvenile Mediterranean Gull north.  In the Gristhorpe Bay area: juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, Little Egret, 2 Wheatears , Spotted Flycatcher, Lesser Whitethroat and Swift. A Redstart at Scalby Beck. Juvenile Yellow-legged Gull at Wykeham East Lake, also Snipe, Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Greenshank. Five Marsh Harriers and Grenshank at Potter Brompton Carr. Highlights past Long Nab included a Merlin south, Marsh Harrier in off the sea, Little Egret west, and 3 Swifts south. A family group of 5 Spotted Flycatchers at Wrench Green.

 An adult Long-tailed Skua flew north close past Long Nab, also 4 Arctic Skuas, and Arctic Tern past. The high tide roost at Gristhorpe Bay held 10 Herons, 35 Cormorants, 104 Oystercatchers, 7 Turnstone, 6 Redshank, Greenshank, 2 Curlews. In the nearby fields a Wheatear, 10 Whitethroats, Lesser Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, 132 Goldfinches. Whimbrel and Hobby over Osgodby. An Osprey again in the Ellerburn valley, also 19 Herons and 3 Marsh Tits. 19 Mistle Thrushes in stubble at Long Causeway Road, 8 Gadwall, 5 Teal on Causeway Lake. At Potter Brompton Carr: 35 Teal, 7 Swifts, 25 Snipe, 3 Green Sandpipers, 8 Ruff, 4 Marsh Harriers, Cetti's Warbler.

Highlights past Long Nab included 3 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Little Egrets, 5 Ruff, 2 Whimbrel, 3 Red-throated Divers. Swift reports were one over Wrench Green, 2 south at Long Nab, and 3 south over Burniston. Willow Tit and Spotted Flycatcher at Haygate, Dalby Forest.

 A juvenile Spotted Redshank was a new arrival at Potter Brompton Carr. Also there were 16 Ruff, Greenshank, 5 Green Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Dunlin, Great White Egret, and 2 Marsh Harriers. Single Turtle Doves near Silpho and The Mill Inn, Harwood Dale. Highlights past Long Nab included a drake Scaup, Wigeon, 6 Arctic Skuas, 4 Great Skuas, 2 Caspian Gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull, and a Mediterranean Gull. Two Snipe, 15 Teal at Harwood Dale Lake. 18 Gadwall at Seamer Road Mere. The Osprey was seen again at Ellerburn trout farm late afternoon. Three Dunlin at Scalby Mills. At least 4 Willow Tits (2 different areas) and 4 Marsh Tits at Wrench Green, plus a Hobby over. 25+ Mistle Thrushes in a field at Hackness.
