Friday 31st July

45 Crossbills flew south at Ravenscar early this morning. 8 Whimbrel, 3 Common Terns, 2 Dunlin and 17 Teal were on/around the rocks at Scalby Mills and 11 Goosanders flew past south. A juvenile Marsh Harrier flew over fields at Scalby Lodge pond, then was seen twice flying over Long Nab, first north then south. A Green Sandpiper was heard calling as it flew south over Scalby Nab. At South Cliff 71 Crossbills flew south, and 6 Mediterranean Gulls, 4 Little Egrets (one a juvenile), and a summer plumage Knot were on Black Rocks. An adult Mediterranean Gull was on rocks on the south side of North Bay, and an Osprey was spotted over Wykeham Lakes. This evening an Arctic Skua, a Whimbrel and a summer plumage Bar-tailed Godwit flew south past Scalby Mills where a summer plumage Knot was seen circling overhead. The Hen Harrier was still at Long Nab.

Early this morning a Curlew Sandpiper was seen with 2 Dunlin circling Cornelian Bay before heading south, and 402 juvenile Herring Gulls were counted between South Bay and Black Rocks. 20 Crossbills flew south at Ravenscar, and a single one flew south at both Long Nab and Peasholm. A Red Kite flew west over Hutton Buscel this afternoon, and 20 Common Scoter flew north past Marine Drive.

The Hen Harrier was still at Long Nab.Just 2 Crossbills were seen flying south at Ravenscar this morning, while 2 Little Egrets were at Johnson's Marsh and 10 Mandarins were at Harwood Dale Lake. Also present there were 2 juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Common Sandpipers, 3 Little Ringed Plovers and 4 Gadwall. An eclipse drake Eider was on the sea off Marine Drive and 30 Common Scoter flew north. 30 Curlew were in the field below Seamer Tip where 2 Sedge Warblers were seen and heard, while a Tufted Duck with 5 ducklings and 2 eclipse Gadwalls were on the pool. At midday the pale male Honey Buzzard was seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint, 2 Green Woodpeckers were in the Birch Hall area of Langdale Forest, and 120+ Golden Plover plus 350 Lapwings were at Newgate Moor (west of Langdale Forest). A family of 5 Peregrines were on the Castle headland feeding on a Guillemot. 4 Alba Wagtails and 3 Black-headed Gulls went south past the Castle headland, and a Great Skua was seen heading south close inshore off Marine Drive. Also passing this afternoon were 16 Oystercatchers south, and 2 Great Skuas, 15 Common Scoter and a Manx Shearwater all north. Later in the evening 2 Great Skuas were on the sea off Marine Drive and a Manx Shearwater and 2 more Bonxies flew by north. An Osprey was at Ellerburn trout farm, and at Wykeham Lakes this evening there were 2 Dunlin, a Ringed Plover and a Little Egret.

There were 2 Little Egrets at Johnson's Marsh early this morning, and another one at Brompton ponds. 100+ House Martins and some Swifts were flying around the top north-west corner of Woodlands Cemetery. A female Honey Buzzard flew low and west at the Mill Inn in Harwood Dale, and 3 Peregrines were seen over the cliffs at Cloughton Newlands. A juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Little Ringed Plovers and a Dunlin were seen at Wykeham East Lake. At Long Nab 6 Crossbills flew south, the Hen Harrier was seen, and a Grasshopper Warbler was again singing at the scrape. The pale male Honey Buzzard was seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint this afternoon, plus a Goshawk and about 30 Crossbills. A Mandarin with a well-grown brood of 5 young was seen in Troutsdale. This evening a family of Sparrowhawks and a Treecreeper were seen at Manor Road Cemetery. There were fewer small gulls in South Bay this afternoon - only 4 Mediterranean Gulls, plus a juvenile heading south offshore. 28 Sandwich Terns, 47 Oystercatchers, 32 Curlew, a Whimbrel and a Teal were in Cornelian Bay, and a Red-throated Diver was in South Bay.

3 Little Egrets, a Black-tailed Godwit and 13 Herons were at Johnson's Marsh today. Heading south past Marine Drive were: 41 Oystercatchers, a Ringed Plover, a Curlew, 16 Whimbrel, 20 Turnstones, 21 Sanderling, 72 Dunlin, 23 Knot, 20 Redshank, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 20 Common Scoter, 13 Teal, an Arctic Skua, 2 Red-throated Divers and a juvenile Mediterranean Gull; while heading past northwards were: a Shoveler, a Gadwall, a Mallard, a Wigeon, 302 Common Scoter and 6 Teal. Willow Warblers were behind Marine Drive wall and on Valley Road. Some of the highlights passing by Long Nab this morning were a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, 2 Golden Plover, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 65 Dunlin, 16 Sanderling, 12 Turnstones, 12 Whimbrel and 1433 Swifts. A Wigeon and a juvenile Mediterranean Gull flew by north, and a Grasshopper Warbler was singing at the scrape. A further 8 Black-tailed Godwits flew by south this evening.

131 Crossbills and 53 Siskin passed by Ravenscar heading south this morning. There was a Green Sandpiper at Northstile pool and 3 Willow Tits nearby, while at Wykeham South Lake there was a Little Egret and 2 Redshanks. A male Pied Flycatcher and a Red Kite were in Hutton Buscel, and a Red Kite also flew west over Wykeham Forest in the late afternoon. In Cornelian Bay there was a drake Common Scoter plus 6 Teal, 9 Sandwich Terns, a Common Sandpiper, a Whimbrel and 19 Curlew. 30+ Sandwich Terns were seen at Scalby Mills; a Redshank and 8 Turnstones were roosting at the harbour (one of them with a green over red colour ring, returning for its fourth year); and an adult Mediterranean Gull was on the rocks opposite the skate park. 83 Crossbills were seen flying east in the space of 90 minutes from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint this evening, with about another 20 present there. A Turtle Dove was again seen at Long Nab this evening plus the Hen Harrier, and the Little Egret was still at Johnson's Marsh.

13 Herons were at Johnson's Marsh this morning, and 11 Mediterranean Gulls were at Holbeck (8 adults, a second summer bird, a first-summer bird and a juvenile). The Hen Harrier was still present. A juvenile Mediterranean Gull flew south past Marine Drive, and an adult Mediterranean Gull was also at Scalby Mills along with 24 Sandwich Terns (7 of them juveniles) and 4 Curlew. At Long Nab a juvenile Turtle Dove was feeding with Woodpigeons near Cliff Top House, a Grasshopper Warbler was singing north of the observatory, and 3 Willow Warblers were at Crook Ness plus the  Passing by were 22 Knot, 5 Whimbrel going south, and 324 Common Scoter, a Tufted Duck and a juvenile Mediterranean Gull going north. At Scalby Mills this afternoon there were 2 Redshank, an adult Mediterranean Gull, and 38 Sandwich Terns, while heading past south were 2 Dunlin, 4 Whimbrel and a Sparrowhawk ( about a mile/1.5 mile out to sea). 2+ Whinchats and 3 Stonechats were seen at Jugger Howe Moor, and an evening seawatch included a juvenile Mediterranean Gull and 2 Arctic Skuas north, plus 22 Whimbrel and 4 Knot south.

Long Nab witnessed an increase in wader movement this morning, highlights were a flock of 46 Black-tailed Godwits, 19 Whimbrel, 2 Turnstone, Knot, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover and 29 Oystercatchers. A juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was at Wykeham East Lake, also 3 Teal, Lapwing, 10 Lbb Gulls and 23 Tufted Duck. 5 Egyptian Geese were on South lake. The Green Sandpiper remains at Johnson's Marsh. A Cuckoo flew north at Flixton Bridge plus one at Gristhorpe Cliff, and one was at Ganton yesterday. An adult Mediterranean Gull was at Scalby Mills, also 145 Black-headed & 2 Common Gulls, Redshank and 2 Turnstone.

The Purple Heron flew west over Crossgates at 10.30. A Hobby flew east there late morning. An early morning watch at Ravenscar saw 91 Crossbills, 63 Siskin and a Great Spotted Woodpecker south. A Marsh Harrier was hunting over fields at Long Nab this morning before moving off north at 09.25. Also north were 7 Whimbrel and a Golden Plover. 25 Dunlin flew south. Nine Mediterranean Gulls were in South Bay on Black Rocks (6 adults (2 new), 2 first and 1 second-summer), also 103 Black-headed Gulls and a Whimbrel there. Highlights past South Cliff included 13 Dunlin and a Whimbrel north plus 73 Sandwich Terns, 4 Common Terns and a second-summer Mediterranean Gull north. A drake Common Scoter was at Wykeham South Lake, also LRP, On East Lake were 21 Tufted Ducks, 7 Lbb Gulls and a juvenile Wheatear.

News of a Long-eared Owl photographed last night at Scalby. Twelve Herons and a Green Sandpiper were at Johnson's Marsh. A flock of six Herons flew north over Crossgates mid-afternoon. A male Honey Buzzard was seen from Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint. Highlights past Long Nab included six Whimbrel north and a first-summer Mediterranean Gull south. 51 House Sparrows were near Cliff Top House (Long Nab).

A juvenile Hen Harrier was seen over the fields at Long NabGreen Sandpipers were at both Northstile pool and Johnson's Marsh this morning, and a ringtail Hen Harrier at Long Nab. This evening a Peregrine was seen hunting over the old prison, and a Hobby flew north-west over Pindar School. 7 Mediterranean Gulls (4 adults, a second summer and 2 first summer birds) and 94 Black-headed Gulls were roosting at Holbeck. A Ringed Plover was on Black Rocks. A Marsh Harrier (2cy male) flew over Wykeham Lakes, also Little Egret there.

A Green Sandpiper was seen at Johnson's Marsh this morning, and remained there in the evening; while 2 Dunlin were seen mid-afternoon before heading off south. Highlights passing Long Nab this morning included: a Ruff and 2 Goosanders heading north, plus 22 Dunlin, 14 Redshank, a Sanderling and 830 Swifts heading south, as well as one Great Skua. This afternoon 8 Shelduck, a Golden Plover, a Dunlin, 2 Turnstones, 3 Whimbrel and 268 Swifts flew past. A Red Kite flew south over Cayton Carrs, and a Black-tailed Godwit was on the beach at Scalby Mills.

Passing South Cliff this morning were: 2 Willow Tits going south, 6 Crossbills heading north and 1 in Cornelian Ravine, 6 Mediterranean Gulls were on Black Rocks (2 adults, 2 second summer and 2 first summer). A cream crowned Marsh Harrier came in at Long Nab and headed west, and a Red Kite was seen at Leith Rigg. Also passing Long Nab were 62 Common Scoter, 43 Black-headed Gulls, a Sparrowhawk, a Peregrine, a Kestrel, 3 Whimbrel and a Mediterranean Gull all heading north. 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 6 Curlew, 8 Swifts and 31 Linnets went south. A Whitethroat was singing near the observatory. At Fylingdales east of the A169 there was a family of 6 Lesser Redpolls, adult Spotted Flycatchers with at least 2 fledglings, a family group of 4 Wheatears, Stonechat adults with 4 fledglings and a Merlin. An adult Mediterranean Gull was at Folkton Carr.

40 Crossbills, 2 Goshawks, 3 Whitethroats, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Mistle Thrushes, 3 Song Thrushes, a Cuckoo and a Yellowhammer were seen in Harwood Dale this morning. At Wykeham Lakes there was a second summer Mediterranean Gull, and 33 Black-headed Gulls were on East Lake. 2 Goshawks, 4 Buzzards and a Yellow Wagtail were at Ellerburn Bank this afternoon.

A Quail was heard calling from in the cereal field behind Long Nab this morning, while a large Shearwater (species uncertain) was spotted passing by northwards about 4 miles out. Other highlights passing Long Nab through the morning include: 8 Arctic Skuas, 2 Great Skuas, 6 Manx Shearwaters, a Red-throated Diver, 99 Common Scoter, a second summer Mediterranean Gull, 238 Sand Martins and 309 Swifts south. A Red Kite was over Forge Valley.

A group of 7 Little Egrets flew north past Marine Drive this morning. 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 35 Oystercatchers, 23 Curlew and a Redshank were along South Cliff, while passing there were 7 Crossbills (2 south, 5 north), a Ringed Plover (south), and 7 Little Egrets (north). 2 Honey Buzzards, including a displaying male, were seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint mid-afternoon. 2 Turnstones were on the harbour at high tide and 55 Black-headed Gulls were at Scalby Mills. In Jackson's Bay there were 16 Oystercatchers and a Little Egret on the beach and a juvenile Stonechat on the cliffs.

10+ Crossbills, in three groups, flew north over Whin Bank this morning, 40 flew north at Ravenscar, and one flew south over North Bay chalets. 3 Barn Owls were hunting at Wrench Green, 27 Mallards were at Johnson's Marsh, and 5 Sandwich Terns, 4 LRP and a Greenshank were seen at Wykeham Lakes. At Long Nab an adult Mediterranean Gull and a Common Tern flew north, and the pair of Stonechats have another brood of 3 juveniles. A third calendar year Mediterranean Gull was on Cayton Carrs, and a Grasshopper Warbler was reeling at Middle Deepdale. At Scalby Mills this afternoon there was a Turnstone and an adult Mediterranean Gull, while a second summer Mediterranean Gull flew north. At Long Nab there was a Kestrel, a Stonechat and a Reed Bunting, while one Curlew flew north and two flew south. A family group of 2 adults and 2 juvenile Turtle Doves were in Burniston.

A Black Guillemot in breeding plumage flew north past Long Nab this morning. Other highlights from there included 33 Teal, an Eider, 468 Common Scoter, a Little Egret, 3 Whimbrel, 39 Curlew, a Bar-tailed Godwit, 11 Redshank, 2 Dunlin, 5 Mediterranean Gulls, 4 Great Skuas and 2 Arctic Skuas. 5 Oystercatchers were at Wykeham South Lake at lunchtime. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was seen on a roof in Ramsey Street this evening, and pairs are known to be nesting on roofs on Livingstone Road and Franklin Street.

40 Common Scoter flew north past Marine Drive early this morning. Later in the morning a Cory's Shearwater flew north past Long Nab and half an hour later past Ravenscar, then yet later a second one flew north past South Cliff. 29 Curlew, a Whimbrel and 13 Oystercatchers were roosting along South Cliff, while 3 Mediterranean Gulls were in South Bay and a Red-breasted Merganser flew north. Early this afternoon a Whimbrel and 8 Sandwich Terns were at Scalby Mills and a Red-throated Diver flew south. Other highlights passing Long Nab included 7 Eider, 649 Common Scoter, 2 Velvet Scoter, a Red-breasted Merganser, 19 Curlew, 2 Whimbrel, 3 Dunlin and 32 Redshank.

40 Common Scoter were seen flying south past Marine Drive this morning. Heading south past South Cliff were: 19 Redshank, 6 Curlew (plus 5 north), and 6 Whimbrel (plus 1 north), while a Little Egret, an Arctic Tern and 2 Crossbills flew north. 5 Crossbills were also in Cornelian Ravine before  heading off west. 4 Mediterranean Gulls were in South Bay - 2 first summer birds, one second summer, and an adult. 32 Curlew and a Whimbrel were in the South Cliff roost, and a Turnstone and a Grey Wagtail were in Cornelian Bay. 75 Crossbills flew north past Ravenscar, while 3 more flew south, as did 57 Siskins. Heading south past Long Nab were a Velvet Scoter, 2 Turnstones, 6 Whimbrel and 6 Curlew, while 7 Curlew, a Whimbrel, and an adult Mediterranean Gull flew north. 170 Tree Sparrows and 13 House Sparrows were round Cliff Top House. A Green Sandpiper was seen circling Johnson's Marsh in the early afternoon.

A family of 5 or 6 Willow Tits were near Northstile, Wrench Green this morning, and an Osprey was at Wykeham South Lake. Very early morning 114 Crossbills flew past Ravenscar, 98 north and 16 south, while 17 Siskins flew south and 1 flew north. 15 Crossbills and 220 Siskins were seen in Langdale Forest at Birch Hall. Passing Long Nab were 5 Teal, a Whimbrel, 47 Manx Shearwaters (41 of them north), 13 Curlew (12 of them north), and 153 Puffins (141 of them north).

3 Crossbills and 3 Siskins flew south at Ravenscar early this morning, and a Grey Heron flew in from the east before continuing south. At Wykeham Lakes there were 4 Wigeon and 36 Tufted Duck on East Lake and 2 juvenile Shelduck on South Lake. A Common Sandpiper was at Brompton ponds.

3 Green Sandpipers were at Northstile pool this morning, where 30 or more Swifts were feeding overhead and a group/s of 15-18 Crossbills flew out of the forest several times before turning and heading back in. A Little Egret flew south at Long Nab. In Cornelian Bay this afternoon there was an Eider, a Canada Goose, 18 Curlew and 5 Sandwich Terns, while a single Crossbill was in the ravine.

At South Cliff this morning 7 Redshank flew south, 2 Tufted Duck went north, and 34 Black-headed Gulls came in from the east. A Little Egret, 25 Curlew and 5 Mediterranean Gulls (3 first summer, one second summer and an adult) were on Black Rocks. A Pochard and a Little Egret flew north past Long Nab, and a second summer Mediterranean Gull was in Burniston Bay. A Cuckoo flew south at Cloughton Wyke towards the Hundales in the middle of the day, and a Little Egret and a Canada Goose were seen in Cornelian Bay.

A flock of 90 Common Scoter flew north past Marine Drive early this morning, with a total of 303 heading north and 39 south. Also recorded there were 2 Curlew south and 29 in from the east, a Bar-tailed Godwit also in from the east, and a Dunlin and 23 Redshank south. 21 Curlew were on Black Rocks, as were 5 Mediterranean Gulls - 2 adults and 3 first summer birds. At Northstile pool there were 2 Green Sandpipers, and on Johnson's Marsh a second-brood Coot chick still survives, the first brood having been predated. Passing Long Nab were 549 Common Scoter, a Whimbrel, 54 Curlew, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, 26 Redshank, a third calendar year Mediterranean Gull, 17 Common Gulls, an intermedius Lesser Black-backed Gull and a Great Skua.

Today was Crossbill day! 13 flew north through South Cliff this morning, 139 flew south past Ravenscar, about 250 were seen in one group in Wykeham Forest, over 130 were seen in Dalby Forest in several flocks of which one numbered over 50, and 5 flew south through Seamer Road Mere. 3 Mediterranean Gulls remain in South Bay - 2 adults and a first summer bird - while another adult was in Burniston Bay. Also heading south past Ravenscar were  a Turtle Dove, 721 Siskins, 22 Chaffinches, 16 Goldfinch, 2 Bullfinch and a Lesser Whitethroat, while moving south past Long Nab were a Whimbrel, 6 Curlews and 2 Oystercatchers. A Turtle Dove was seen south of Givendale Farm in Dalby Forest.
