Thursday 31st October

A Kingfisher was spotted at the Open Air Theatre first thing this morning. A Woodcock was at Burton Riggs; a Little Egret and a Kingfisher were at Black Dike, Seamer Tip; and a Little Owl was at Metes Lane in Seamer. A Great Grey Shrike was showing clearly in the Derwent Head Rigg/ Low Woof Howe area of Langdale Forest, where there was also a Stonechat and small numbers of Crossbills. 7 Goldeneye, 8 Great Crested Grebes and a Pochard were at Wykeham South Lake, and a Pink-footed Goose was spotted in among a flock of Greylag Geese north of Darrells Low Farm. Highlights passing Long Nab include: a Velvet Scoter, 27 Eiders, a Great Northern Diver, a Little Auk and a Mediterranean Gull.

Wednesday 30th October

Early this morning a Short-eared Owl was seen at Cromer Point pond, and a Buzzard, 3 Great Crested Grebes, a Little Grebe and 12 Wigeon were at Wykeham South Lake. A Goosander was on the river at Wrench Green, and a Long-tailed Duck was still feeding close inshore at the southern end of Cayton Bay. A Great Grey Shrike was spotted north of the Falcon on the east side of the Whitby Road. Highlights passing by Long Nab include: a Dark-bellied Brent Goose, a Velvet Scoter, 54 Eider, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Great Crested Grebes and a Little Auk, while 2 Chiffchaffs were at the ringing plantation.A Little Auk was seen in front of the lifeboat house late afternoon.

A Great Crested Grebe was seen at the harbour early this morning, and a pair of Long-tailed Ducks were feeding close inshore at the southern end of Cayton Bay. 2 Little Auks were on the sea near the seal colony in Ravenscar. At Taylor Way there were a Jack Snipe and 3 Common Snipe; at Seamer Tip there were 2 Stonechats; at Flixton Carr there were 4 Fieldfares; and at Star Carr about 1000 Lapwings, 800 Starlings and 9 Curlews. 5 Buzzards were seen over Wrench Green, plus a Woodcock. A Lesser Whitethroat (blythi type) was in Sycamores by Cliff Top House near Long Nab. Highlights passing Long Nab include: 12 Pale-bellied and 2 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, a Velvet Scoter, 4 Long-tailed Duck, a Great Northern Diver, a Pomarine Skua, 14 Little Auks, and a Snow Bunting. 624+ Starlings and a Woodcock flew in off the sea, and another 2 Woodcock were present in the area. A Short-eared Owl was seen at Scalby Lodge. 4 Little Auks were spotted flying north past Marine Drive, 2 Mediterranean Gulls were in North Bay, and a Siskin was on Castle Hill this afternoon. 2 Goldeneye were at Wykeham South Lake, and a Wigeon and 2 Goldeneye were at Seamer Road Mere. 2 huge skeins of Pink-footed Geese (400-600 in total) were seen flying north over Brompton and north-east over Wrench Green this morning.

2 Mediterranean Gulls and a Snow Bunting flew south past Long Nab this morning. At Seamer Tip there were 2 Stonechats, a Chiffchaff and 110 Lapwings; and on the flooded Seamer Mead there were large numbers of gulls. A single Whooper Swan flew south at Cornelian Bay before doing a U turn at Cayton Bay and heading back north. Also in Cornelian Bay were 4 Red-throated Divers, 2 Goosanders and 4 Rock Pipits. A female Common Scoter and a Red-throated Diver were spotted off Marine Drive.

5 Whooper Swans were in the field near Crook Ness this morning. Highlights from Long Nab were a Great Northern Diver and 2 second calendar year Mediterranean Gulls flying north. At Wykeham South Lake there were 3 Goldeneye, and in fields north of the Sherburn rail crossing there were 100+ Lapwings.

Early this morning 3 Siskins and a Grey Wagtail were in Peasholm, and a Grey Plover flew north over Knipe Point. A first calendar year Marsh Harrier was hunting near Long Nab for some time during the late morning/early afternoon. Other highlights from Long Nab include: a Woodcock on the cliff top north of the observation hut; 28 Whooper Swans, 211 Pink-footed Geese and a Twite heading south; and 4 Goosanders and a Goldeneye heading north. 4 Ringed Plovers were at Scalby Mills, 3 small flocks of tits and Goldcrests were in the castle area, and 2 Swallows flew east over Crossgates.

At Wykeham South Lake today there were 2 Goldeneye and 38 Coot, and at Johnson's Marsh there were 12 Herons and 36 Teal. A Snow Bunting was present at Long Nab, where 196 Starlings, 15 Lapwings and 3 Golden Plovers came in off the sea, and a Great Northern Diver passed by heading south.

A Red-throated Diver was in the harbour this morning, where 8 Whooper Swans were seen flying over, having been seen already over Long Nab. Also at Long Nab a Ringtail Hen Harrier was seen flying WSW, and a Little Egret flew north. At Seamer Road Mere this afternoon there were 17 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye, 2 Coot, a Mediterranean Gull and a Chiffchaff, plus 4 Swallows flying south. A flock of probably 20 to 40 Pink-footed Geese were heard heading south over Dean Road this evening.

A Siberian Chiffchaff was calling frequently in Pipe Gully (150m south of Crook Ness) this morning, and a Mealy Redpoll was at Cliff Top House before flying off northwards. Other highlights from the morning at Long Nab include 1202 Pink-footed Geese, 3 Whooper Swans, a Twite and 261 Siskins all heading south, and a Great Northern Diver on the sea. A Red-throated Diver was close to the shore in North Bay, opposite the skate park. 2 Guillemots were just off the castle headland, where a skein of 200+ Pink-footed Geese was seen flying overhead. A Little Egret and 2 Marsh Tits were on the east side of Seamer Tip; a Peregrine was sat on the ground and 2 Willow Tits were present at Seamer Mead; and 15 Fieldfares were seen at Seamer Carr. 6 Goosanders were on Harwood Dale Lake this afternoon.

A flock of 26 Fieldfares were seen in Wrench Green this morning, plus a Willow Tit, 4 Marsh Tits, 3 Jays, 4 Bullfinches, 7+ Goldcrests and a female Blackcap. 17 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Seamer Tip.  A White-billed Diver flew north past Long Nab in the early afternoon. Other highlights from there through the day include: 4 Velvet Scoter, 4 Great Northern Divers, 2 Sooty and 19 Manx Shearwaters, 16 Little Auks, a Long-tailed Skua, 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 3 Little Gulls, 27 Puffins, 10 Arctic Skuas and 9 Great Skuas.

Highlights from the sea watch at Long Nab this morning include: a third calendar year Glaucous Gull, 25 Whooper Swans, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 3 Goosanders, 4 Purple Sandpipers, a Little Gull, a Mediterranean Gull, a Puffin, 11 Great Skuas and 2 Arctic Skuas; and in the afternoon: a Great Northern Diver flying past plus one on the sea, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 9 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Pomarine Skuas, about 6 Puffins on the sea and 8 heading north, 2 Little Auks, a Goosander and 5 Little Gulls. A Mediterranean Gull, 6 Teal, 3 Shovelers and 17 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip Pool, while along Taylor Way there were both a Common Snipe and a Jack Snipe, a Chiffchaff, a Grey Wagtail and 30 Redwings. At Seamer Road Mere there were 12 Tufted Duck, a Little Grebe, a Goldeneye, 2 Coot, a Mediterranean Gull and a Brambling. A Brambling was also present at Crook Ness this morning. In the harbour this afternoon there was a Long-tailed Duck, while just outside the harbour there were 2 Red-throated Divers. 20 Purple Sandpipers were in the harbour at high tide and 2 more in North Bay. On Castle Hill there was a Mealy Redpoll, a Short-eared Owl, a Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaffs, 10 Goldcrests and a Brambling. 4 Grey Partridges were seen at Playdale Farm. At Scalby Mills there were 50 Wigeon, a Kittiwake, 26 Common Gulls, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 85 Great Black-backed Gulls, 120 Black-headed Gulls and 550 Herring Gulls!

A quiet day for bird news. A Goshawk flew west over Crossgates this morning; a Yellow-browed Warbler was spotted on the north side of the castle; and 20 Pink-footed Geese were seen heading south over Dean Road in the early afternoon.

At Long Nab this morning: 3 Snow Buntings were being hunted by a Merlin in the fields north of the observatory; a Long-eared Owl flew in from the east and veered off north-west over the sea towards Cloughton Wyke; and a Short-eared Owl flew in off the sea and landed in the end of Long Hedge. Other highlights from Long Nab included 2 Arctic Terns, a Little Gull heading north, and a Mediterranean Gull heading south. In the Langdale Rigg/Lun Rigg area of Langdale Forest there was a Ring Ouzel, a Willow Tit, a Goshawk and 60+ Crossbills. On Castle Hill there was a male Stonechat, a Goldcrest and 12 Robins, while in the harbour there were 53 Turnstones.

Early this morning a Guillemot was seen in the harbour, and Kingfishers were seen at both Scalby Mills and the Open Air Theatre. A Yellow-browed warbler, a Jay, 2 Bullfinches and 8 Mistle Thrushes were seen in the plantation at the side of the quarry on Cockrah Road, plus 30 Redwings flying west. 5 Grey Wagtails were at Scalby Mills, 4 Goldcrests were at Crook Ness, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 34 Coot, 4 Great Crested Grebes and 2 Little Grebes. Seamer Road Mere had 17 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye, 2 Coot, a Blackcap and a Chiffchaff. A Chiffchaff was also seen at Oliver's Mount, and small numbers of Redwings were moving west over Valley Road. 80 Pink-footed Geese were flying south about half a mile out to sea past Cloughton Wyke. Present near Long Nab were 4 Snow Buntings, a Ring Ouzel, 5 Stonechats and a Brambling. Passing Long Nab were 5 Goosanders, 236 Tree Sparrows, 2 Brambling, a Twite and 36 Reed Buntings heading south, and a Brambling and a Snow Bunting heading north. A Chiffchaff, 3 Bramblings and 6 Redwings were near Cliff Top House this evening and 35+ Redwings were seen in Wrench Green.

At Wykeham Lakes this morning 2 skeins of about 50 Pink-footed Geese were seen heading south, and another of 35 heading east. At Long Nab the ringed Yellow-browed Warbler had moved to Cliff Top House, where there was also a Ring Ouzel and a Brambling. A male Ring Ouzel was also seen flying over Holbeck car park. At Castle Hill this morning there was a Yellow-browed Warbler, 8 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps and a Brambling, while 2 Whooper Swans were seen flying south. In the afternoon the Yellow-browed Warbler was still present on the south side of Castle Hill where there were 35 Robins. A Brambling was by St Mary's Church and 3 Tree Sparrows were at The Towers. A Fieldfare and a Merlin were at Long Nab, while flying south past were 2 Velvet Scoter, 8 Pintail, a Mediterranean Gull and 2 Sandwich Terns. 2 House Martins flew east over Crossgates, 3 Guillemots and a Shag were spotted off Marine Drive, and 34 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills. A Yellow-browed Warbler, a Chiffchaff and a Ring Ouzel were seen at Hoods Lane, Cloughton. 4 Goldcrests, a Marsh Tit and 2 Chiffchaffs were in Cornelian Ravine and 3 Red-throated Divers were in the bay.

A Ring Ouzel has been seen over the last 3 days in a garden in the Newby area, and another was seen  on a roof this morning at Knipe Point before flying off north. A Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest were at Heron Lane, and a Jay was near Dean's Garden Centre. 120 Pink-footed Geese were seen heading south over Hutton Buscel this afternoon, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 6 Great Crested Grebes, an Egyptian Goose, a Little Grebe, 17 Tufted Duck, 59 Coot, and 3 Whooper Swans which flew off eastwards. At Crook Ness there was a Merlin, a Woodcock, a foreign-ringed Yellow-browed Warbler, and an acredula type Willow Warbler in the sycamores. 2 Ring Ouzels were at the ringing plantation, and 7 Blackcaps, a Wheatear and 4 Stonechats were also in the Long Nab area. Highlights passing Long Nab heading south were: 169 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Arctic and a Pomarine Skua, a Great Northern Diver and 34 Little Gulls. Heading north were: 3 Little Gulls, 6 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 651 Wigeon, 7 Pintail, 9 Shoveler, 6 Goldeneye, a Great Northern Diver, 7 Bar-tailed Godwits and a Sandwich Tern.

Lots of Pink-footed Geese on the move again: about 100 flew east over Peasholm this morning, about the same number flew west over Cayton Bay, 60 flew south over Marine Drive, and 50 flew north-west over Seamer Tip.  2 Shovelers were on Seamer Tip Pool; a male Stonechat was on the east side of the tip; a Little Egret and 19 Lapwings flew south over Seamer Mead; and 3 Chiffchaffs were seen on Meads Lane, Crossgates. A Little Gull in heavy moult was having a good bath at Johnson's Marsh before flying off north. 35 Turnstones were in the car park at the harbour this evening. Highlights from Long Nab today include 5 Ring Ouzels (2 of which flew north, high up), 7 Chiffchaffs and 3 Blackcaps. Heading south were 764 Pink-footed Geese (plus 35 north), 2 Purple Sandpipers, a Merlin, 2 Jays (very high up), 157 Skylarks, 17 Swallows, 5 House Martins, 332 Tree Sparrows, a Brambling and 2 Lapland Buntings. A Goshawk was spotted over Cloughton Woods.

A group of 25 Whooper Swans were in North Bay this morning, before flying off southwards. A Chiffchaff was in Eastfield, and a Yellow-browed Warbler was in a large tit flock at Seamer Road Mere, where there were also 9 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye, a Coot and 2 Little Grebes. About 15 Bottlenose Dolphins were seen close in heading north, initially off Scarborough Harbour, then in North Bay, Jackson's Bay and then passing Long Nab. Highlights seen heading south past Long Nab included 30 Pink-footed Geese (plus 11 more at Field Farm), 2 Tufted Duck, 3 Little Gulls, 2 Common Terns and 2 Swallows. 2 Guillemots were seen off Marine Drive, and a Blackcap was still present in Wrench Green.

A skein of about 80 Pink-footed Geese were seen low over Hovingham Drive this morning. 50 more were seen over Scarborough football ground in the afternoon, and a total of 1526 were seen through the day passing Long Nab southwards (plus 70 heading north). Yet more were heard this evening heading south over Castle Road and Westwood Court, and 80+ were seen at about the same time over the Brunswick Centre heading inland. Other highlights from Long Nab include a Snow Bunting seen flying north, plus 7 Swallows, 2 House Martins, 441 Meadow Pipits, 209 Tree Sparrows, 433 Goldfinches and 25 Reed Buntings all heading south. 14 Rock Pipits were north of the observatory and a Goshawk flew over Cloughton Woods. At least 25 Grey Partridge were seen at Field Lane, Burniston, and a Lesser Whitethroat on Station Lane, Cloughton. In Jackson's Bay there were 4 Whooper Swans, 127 Oystercatchers, 18 Ringed Plover, a Grey Plover, 34 Turnstones, a Dunlin, 18 Redshank, 10 Curlew and 6 Rock Pipits. A juvenile Sandwich Tern was seen going south past Scalby Nab where there was also a male Stonechat; and at Scalby Mills there were 44 Wigeon and 2 Kingfishers. 77 Mallard and 18 Tufted Duck were in Peasholm Park.

4 Whooper Swans went south past Long Nab early this morning. Other highlights passing by southwards included 80 Little Gulls (plus 3 going north), a Bar-tailed Godwit, 4 Grey Plover, 8 Knot, 2 Arctic and 2 Common Terns, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Swallows and 3 House Martins. 3 Stonechats were by the observatory and a Treecreeper was at Crook Ness. A Chiffchaff was at Burton Riggs, and a Gadwall and a Little Owl were at Wykeham South Lake. A Yellow-browed Warbler was heard calling at the north end of Scar Wood.

7 Whooper Swans were seen this morning heading south, inland of Long Nab, and were shortly afterwards seen on the sea near the Sea Life Centre. At Wykeham South Lake there were 4 Pochard, 42 Coot, 2 Little Grebes and 23 Tufted Duck. A flock of 40+ Siskins were seen along the riverbank near Hackness. At Burton Riggs there were 72 Mallard, and at Seamer Tip Pool there were 18 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, a Wigeon, a Mallard, and a Tufted Duck. 2 Stonechats were seen at Housedale in Dalby Forest round midday. Highlights from Long Nab included 4 Barnacle Geese, 3 Red Breasted Mergansers, 5 Swallows, 4 House Martins, 77 Tree Sparrows and 440 Linnets, all heading south. 14 Pink-footed Geese were seen high up, coming in off North Bay and heading west. A Red Kite went east over Crossgates, and a large raptor was seen flying from Irton Moor towards Wykeham South Lake.

A pair of Cranes flew south over Staxton this morning, and a Great White Egret flew south along the cliffs at Long Nab. Through the morning 754 Pink-footed Geese flew south past Long Nab, and 130+ were seen over Wrench Green. 6 House Martins were spotted in Crossgates, and a male Common Scoter was seen off South Cliff. Other highlights passing Long Nab southwards include: an Arctic Tern, a Merlin, 2 Ring Ouzels, a Sand Martin, 15 Swallows, 14 House Martins, 392 Meadow Pipits, 327 Linnets, 176 Tree Sparrows, 23 Reed Buntings, and a Snow Bunting. Additionally, a Kingfisher flew north over the fields, a Lesser Whitethroat was at Crook Ness, a Wheatear was north of the observatory, and a Yellow-browed Warbler was at the ringing plantation. A Snow Bunting was spotted at Ravenscar on the path down the cliff to the seal colony, and a Wheatear was near Stoupe Beck.

A Woodcock was seen flying low over Heron Lane early this morning, and in Wrench Green there were 4 Willow Tits and 12+ Redwings. 2 Chiffchaffs were at Seamer Tip pool, about 40 Stockdoves, 4 Willow Tits and a Little Egret were on the east side of Seamer Tip, and a Chiffchaff was at Crab Lane in Crossgates. In Scarham Wood there were 5 Chiffchaffs, a Blackcap and a Yellow-browed Warbler. At Long Nab a Merlin flew south; at Crook Ness a Ring Ouzel flew in off the sea; and at Pipe Gully (south of Crook Ness) there was a Yellow-browed Warbler. 280+ Lapwings were seen at Sherburn, and 12 Teal and 4 Wigeon were at Potter Brompton Carr.

A Great Crested Grebe was seen in the harbour and later in South Bay this morning. Highlights from Long Nab through the day include 238 Little Gulls flying south and 7 north, a Brambling flying south, Yellow-browed Warblers at both Crook Ness and Top Plantation, and Ring Ouzels at both the ringing plantation and Cliff Top House. A Brambling was also seen at the top of Cornelian Ravine, a Dipper was on Scalby Beck, and a Kingfisher was behind the Open Air Theatre.

At Long Nab this morning small numbers of Redwings were arriving in off the sea and small numbers of wildfowl were also moving, including a Brent Goose, 9 Shelduck and 2 Eider. A Yellow-browed Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Chiffchaff and 3 Goldcrests were on the south side of Castle Hill, and on the north side there were 6 more Goldcrests, 2 Chaffinches, 14 Robins, 2 Redwings, 32 Song Thrushes, 10 Blackbirds and a Redstart. A female Goosander and a Kingfisher were at the Open Air Theatre, and 2 Dippers were at Scalby Mills. A Red-throated Diver, 3 Common Scoter and an Arctic Skua were seen from Marine Drive. A Lesser Whitethroat and 3 Goldcrests were at Crook Ness this evening, and another 3 Goldcrests were by Cliff Top House.

Saturday 5th October

At Long Nab this morning were a Yellow-browed Warbler, a Redwing, a Brambling, and a blythi Lesser Whitethroat which was caught and ringed. In the afternoon blythi Lesser Whitethroats were present at Crook Ness and Cliff Top House, while 3 Stonechats were at Long Nab and 50+ Little Gulls flew by northwards. A Peregrine, 20 Reed Buntings and a Marsh Tit were at Seamer Tip, and 40 Skylarks were counted between Seamer Mead and the A64 bypass. A Red-throated Diver was in North Bay, a Yellow-browed Warbler was seen by the Castle walls, and a House Martin was at Crossgates.

Friday 4th October

A Great Crested Grebe and a Red-throated Diver were seen off Marine Drive early this morning. At Wykeham South Lake there were 53 Coot, 15 Tufted Duck and 2 Great Crested Grebes. 80+ Little Gulls were feeding 1-2 miles off Long Nab, and 2 Merlins were hunting near Crook Ness. A Yellow-browed Warbler, a Blackcap and a Lesser Whitethroat (probably blythi) were present at the Long Nab ringing site, where 70 Starlings, a Brambling and 9 Redwings flew in off the sea. Other sightings from Long Nab included 514 Wigeon, 241 Teal, 9 Pintail, 2 Tufted Duck,3 Manx Shearwaters, 29 Dunlin, 169 Little Gulls, 11 Common Terns and an Arctic Tern, all flying north. A Yellow-browed Warbler was also in a garden above Cayton Bay, together with a Treecreeper.

Thursday 3rd October

A Red-throated Diver was first spotted in the harbour early this morning and was still present this evening. A Kingfisher was seen at the back of the Open Air Theatre, and a Yellow-browed Warbler was in trees behind the Cornelian pumping station through the morning. Song Thrushes and Blackbirds (up to 20 of each) were seen moving through the Seamer Tip pool area, while 5 Redwings and 2 Blackbirds were seen passing over the town and 2 Fieldfares were seen in Wrench Green this afternoon.

Wednesday 2nd October

Highlights from Long Nab this morning include a Merlin, 3 Arctic Skuas harrying Kittiwakes offshore, a Sooty Shearwater flying south, and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers and 13 Brent Geese flying north. 5 Chiffchaffs were on the south side of the castle headland, another was at Heron Lane, and another at Seamer Tip pool, where there were also 13 Gadwall, 3 Teal and 4 Wigeon. A Short-eared Owl was seen at South Bay.

Tuesday 1st October

Highlights from the seawatch at Long Nab this morning include 7 juvenile Long-tailed Skuas, a Long-tailed Duck, 27 Manx Shearwaters and 11 Arctic Skuas all heading north, and a Great Northern Diver going south. A Yellow-browed Warbler and 6 Chiffchaffs were at Holbeck car park, and a Wheatear and a Stonechat were seen on South Cliff. A Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Chiffchaffs and 6 Goldcrests were in Cornelian Ravine, and 9 Purple Sandpipers were roosting at the harbour this evening.
