Saturday 30th November

Early this morning a pair of Goosanders were on the sea off the harbour. 38 Waxwings were again at Newlands Park Drive, and 11 were also seen late morning at Willymath Close in Burniston. A Great Northern Diver flew north past Long Nab, a Little Auk and a Great Crested Grebe flew north past Marine Drive, and 98 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Newlands. A Little Auk was also seen in Cornelian Bay, where 2 Red-throated Divers and 2 Goldeneye were seen flying north. In the Scalby Lodge area there were 11 Common Snipe, 46 Curlew, 16 Meadow Pipits and 12 Skylarks, and at Cromer Point pond there was a Stonechat and 2 Common Snipe. In the Haygate area of Dalby there were about 50 Crossbills, some singing, and a similar number of Siskins, plus a Brambling, a Willow Tit and a Marsh Tit. A Kingfisher and a Dipper were spotted in upper Peasholm Glen this afternoon, while a Kingfisher and a Mediterranean Gull were seen at Scalby Mills. A Goldeneye and a Razorbill were in South Bay. Large numbers of Common Crossbills in  Dalby Forest, estimated at 350, 100 of which were at Bickley Gate.

Friday 29th November

3 White-fronted Geese, a Great White Egret and 18 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip pool this morning, with the White-fronted Geese moving a bit later to join Greylags in a field to the south of the pond. 100 Redwings were on Taylor Way, 100 Pink-footed Geese flew over Crossgates, and 7 Little Egrets were in fields beside Folkton Sewage Farm. 138 Common Scoter, 2 Eiders and 22 Mallards flew past Long Nab, and the flock of Waxwings were again seen at Newlands Park Drive. A Great Northern Diver and a Red-throated Diver were in the harbour, where 31 Purple Sandpipers and 4 Rock Pipits were roosting on East Pier.

36 Mandarin Ducks and 8 Goosanders were seen at Harwood Dale Lake today, while at Wykeham South Lake there were 500+ Black-headed Gulls, 160 Wigeon, 34 Tufted Duck, 42 Coot, 400+ Greylag Geese, 7 Great Crested Grebes and 12 Gadwall. A Goldeneye and 53 Common Scoter were seen passing by Long Nab, and 36 Waxwings were again seen at Newlands round lunchtime. At Low Marishes there were 23 Whooper Swans, 27 Mute Swans and about 1000 Lapwings on flooded fields, plus 2000+ Starlings and about 500 Fieldfares.

A Great White Egret was at Seamer Tip pool early this morning. The Waxwings were seen again on Newlands Park Drive this afternoon - the number had gone up to 36 today. 24 Yellowhammers were in stubble south of Hood Lane, and 8 Redwings were nearby,but there was no sign of the Hoopoe that was seen briefly yesterday.

Tuesday 26th November

At Seamer Road Mere this morning there were 45 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye, 3 Goosanders, a Coot, 6 Little Grebes and a Water Rail, while 8 Pink-footed Geese flew over southwards. 11 Crossbills were seen in Wykeham Forest, plus a mixed flock of about 30 Siskins and Redpolls, 5 Marsh Tits, 4 Treecreepers, 5 Bullfinches and 5+ Goldcrests. A Kingfisher was seen feeding from the  rocks at Scalby Mills, but there was no sign of the Waxwings today. A late piece news - a Hoopoe was seen briefly, early this morning in a garden on Hood Lane, Cloughton. 50+ Greenfinch at Wykeham Lakes.

Monday 25th November

Up to 30 Waxwings were again seen off and on today near the Newlands shops. A Jack Snipe was seen in Wrench Green and a Common Snipe on the hillside opposite Mowthorpe. Both Jack Snipe and Common Snipe were also seen at Cromer Point pond. An additional 3 Common Snipe were at Scalby Lodge, where there were 18 Meadow Pipits, 14 Skylarks, 30 Linnets and 5 Twite. A Chiffchaff was at Crook Ness, while at Long Nab 64 Pink-footed Geese and 59 Lapwings flew past southwards and a Woodcock flew in off the sea. 40 Redshank were on the rocks off Marine Drive, and 7 Little Egrets were on Folkton Carr.

A Water Rail was spotted near the Open Air Theatre early this morning, and 6 Little Egrets were at Folkton Bridge while a Great White Egret remains at Seamer Tip pool. Up to 32 Waxwings were feeding on Rowan berries near Newlands shops periodically through the day. 25 Eiders flew north past Marine Drive and 2 Pink-footed Geese flew south east over Seamer Tip. About 60 Crossbills, 70+ Siskins, 2 Bramblings, 2 Marsh Tits and 6 Nuthatches were encountered on the Haygate circuit, Dalby this afternoon.

The Great Northern Diver remained in the harbour today, and 26 Waxwings were again seen near the Newlands shops for about half an hour in the middle of the day. 31 Wigeon and 29 Mandarin Ducks were at Harwood Dale Lake. 28 Purple Sandpipers were roosting on the steps by the lighthouse, and 52 Turnstones were on East Pier.

Friday 22nd November

12 Moorhens and 7 Herons were seen at Johnson's Marsh this afternoon. An immature female Merlin flew east over Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 4 Shoveler and 400+ Lapwings. Over 600 Golden Plover were seen over fields between Potter Brompton Carr and Wykeham South Lake. A Kingfisher, a drake Goosander and 2 Goldeneye were at Seamer Road Mere; the Great Northern Diver was still in the harbour, and the Red-throated Diver was in South Bay. An adult Mediterranean Gull was seen in South Bay and another in Peasholm Park. 25 Waxwings were feeding in a rowan tree near the Newlands Park Drive shops.

39 Fieldfares were seen near Garth End Farm this morning. A Chiffchaff was at Willymath Close, Burniston, 11 Rock Pipits were in the fields at Long Nab, and a Great White Egret was in the filed south of Seamer Tip Pool. At Seamer Road Mere there were: 57 Mute Swans, a pair of Gadwall, 17 Mallard, 32Tufted Duck, 2 Goldeneye, 3 Little Grebes, 10 Cormorants, 61 Moorhens, a Mediterranean Gull, a Blackcap and a Grey Wagtail.

6 Fieldfares and 6 Bullfinches were seen this morning on Cockrah Road, where 108 Pink-footed Geese flew over east and were seen a bit later heading north over Cloughton. At Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, a Goldeneye, 3 Goosanders, 2 Coot, 2 Water Rails, a Mediterranean Gull, a Chiffchaff and 13+ Bullfinches. 2 Great White Egrets were at Potter Brompton, and another was at Seamer Tip Pool (where there were also 2 Shovelers and 19 Gadwall) before flying off towards Cayton. 62 Mandarin Ducks and 3 Little Grebes were on Hackness Lake, and both the Red-throated and Great Northern Divers were in the harbour again. A Marsh Harrier flew north at Long Nab, as did 530 Woodpigeons, while 3670 more Woodpigeons flew south. 2 Great Grey Shrikes were in Langdale Forest, one in the May Moss area and the other at Cess Banks/Stony Knoll. Also in the forest were a Green Woodpecker, 30 Crossbills, a Lesser Redpoll and 2 Stonechats at Derwent Head. 4 Willow Tits, 2 Marsh Tits, about 50 Crossbills, about 70 Siskins, 5 Nuthatches and 28 Fieldfare were seen in the Haygate area of Dalby Forest this afternoon.

On Potter Brompton Carr this morning there were 550+ Teal, a Great White Egret, a Marsh Harrier, 100+ Wigeon, a Shoveler, 2 Grey Wagtails, about 30 Pied Wagtails, a Stonechat, and a Crossbill, while 32 Golden Plover flew over. The Great Northern and Red-throated Divers were both still in the harbour, and at Low Marishes there were 20 Whooper Swans, 22 Mute Swans, about 200 Golden Plover and about 500 Lapwings. 13 Snow Buntings were in the third field north of Long Nab, where there were also 3 Yellowhammers, 5 Reed Buntings, and a Little Owl near the small pond. Passing by Long Nab heading south were 810 Pink-footed Geese, a Little Egret, 366 Woodpigeons and 480 Golden Plover; while passing by northwards were 155 Pink-footed Geese, a Great Northern Diver and 1690 Woodpigeons. 4 Little Egrets and 60+ Pied Wagtails were seen at Flixton sewage works, and a Great White Egret, 24 Gadwall and 3 Shovelers were at Seamer Tip pool.

150 Pink-footed Geese were seen flying south over the junction of the A169 and Old Wives Way this morning, and the Great Northern Diver and a Red-throated Diver were both in the harbour again. Highlights passing Long Nab include a Pomarine Skua, a Little Auk, 3 Goosanders, 2 Snow Buntings and 10 Common Eider. A Great White Egret was in a ploughed field east of Seamer Tip Pool, and 40 to 50 Collared Doves were on the phone wires at Carr House Farm, Cayton.

The Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour this morning, and 2 Water Rails were heard calling behind the Open Air Theatre. 6 Whooper Swans flew south over Cayton Carrs, and 60 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Taylor Way. A Great White Egret flew onto Seamer Tip Pool and a single  Pink-footed Goose was on Seamer Mead. There were 1600 Golden Plover and 600 Lapwings at Binnington/Willerby Carr, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 83 Coot, 8 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Goldeneye, 17 Tufted Duck, 5 Gadwall, 7 Wigeon and a Teal. At Cornelian Bay there were 11 Common Scoter and 3 Red-throated Divers; a Little Auk and 6 Eider were seen flying north; and 5 Reed Buntings were in the ravine. At Newstead Grange, Low Marishes there were 44 Whooper Swans, 12 Mute Swans, 2 Goosander, 110 Greylag Geese, about 650 Lapwings, about 350 Fieldfares, 4 Common Buzzards, 30 Redwings and 18 Golden Plover. 5 Snow Buntings remained between Cromer Point pond (where there were 2 Snipe) and the waste water treatment works this afternoon. 132 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills.

A Great Northern Diver, a Red-throated Diver, a Shag and a Cormorant were all in the harbour this morning. A Snow Bunting was seen on the Cleveland Way just south of the Long Nab observatory, 3 were seen the third field north of there a bit later, and in the early afternoon 5 were seen feeding between Cromer Point pond and the waste water treatment works. A Stonechat was also near Cromer Point pond. Highlights seen passing Long Nab in the morning were 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 39 Eiders, 4 Goldeneye and 2 Black-throated Divers. A Pochard, a Chiffchaff and 30 Redwings were at Seamer Tip Pool this morning, and 2 Kingfishers and a Dipper were on the upper part of Peasholm Beck. At Potter Brompton Carr there were a Marsh Harrier, a Water Rail, 12 Snipe, 14 Lapwing, 3 Shoveler, 480+ Teal, 95 Wigeon, 40 Mallard, a Stonechat and a Grey Wagtail. 7 Little Egrets were spotted at Folkton Bridge (one of them a colour-ringed bird). There were 2 Whooper Swans and 135 Wigeon on Cayton Carr. 18 Whooper Swans were feeding with Mute Swans opposite Low Newstead Grange Farm, Low Marishes where there were also 8 Pink-footed Geese and 2500 Starlings. A Chiffchaff was in Falsgrave Park.

A Great Northern Diver spent the day in the harbour, a Little Auk was just outside the harbour in the morning, a Red-throated Diver was in at the harbour mouth at dusk, and 35 Purple Sandpipers were roosting on the east pier late afternoon. There were 66 Mute Swans at Seamer Road Mere, plus 4 Little Grebes and 2 male Goosanders. A Curlew and an adult Mediterranean Gull were on the North Bay beach this morning and a Great Crested Grebe was in South Bay this afternoon. Highlights passing Long Nab include a Pintail, 185 Eider, a Red-breasted Merganser, a Black-throated Diver, 2 Pomarine Skuas, 3 Great Skuas and 8 Little Auks.

A Merlin was hunting Reed Buntings in the cover crop near Long Nab this morning. A Blackcap was seen on Heron Lane, a Great White Egret was still at Seamer Tip Pool, and 5 Little Egrets were at Folkton Bridge. 120 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Crossgates mid-morning and another 50 in the early afternoon, while 126 were seen flying south past Long Nab. An adult Pomarine Skua in moult went north past Long Nab, where 3 Snow Buntings were still north of the observatory plus another in the fields south-west of Crook Ness. 3 Bramblings were seen feeding on beech mast near Low Dalby where there were also good numbers of Crossbills. At Seamer Road Mere there were 26 Tufted Duck, 52 Mute Swans, 4 Little Grebes and a Water Rail. A Great Northern Diver was in the harbour this afternoon.

A Great White Egret was in the field south east of Seamer Tip Pool this morning, and 2 others were seen early morning at Wykeham South Lake before flying off west. 88 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Eider, 237 Woodpigeons and a Snow Bunting flew south past Long Nab. 12 Whooper Swans were feeding with 20 Mute Swans and 7 Pink-footed Geese in fields at Willow Grange Farm, Low Marishes in the late afternoon.

7 Whooper Swans flew south past Long Nab this morning, and 80+ Pink-footed Geese flew over Seamer Tip pool. A Great Crested Grebe was seen in the harbour mouth, and 4 Little Egrets were east of Folkton Bridge. At Wykeham South Lake there were 7 Goldeneye, 2 Pochard, 8 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Little Grebes, 180+ Fieldfares, 9 Bullfinches and 11 Siskins. A Marsh Harrier was seen hunting over the fields at Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 2 Peregrines, 80+ Wigeon, a Stonechat and about 200 Teal. 3 Snow Buntings remain in the fields north of Long Nab and another flew off north, while 35 Siskins were at the ringing plantation. 2 Kingfishers and a Chiffchaff were at the Open Air Theatre, a Great White Egret was in the field below SeamerTip Pool, and 21 Tufted Duck and 9 Siskins were in Peasholm Park.

15 Siskins flew over Dean Road early this morning. A Great White Egret and 15 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip Pool. 150 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Crossgates and later on about 100 more flew over Morrisons. 3 Snow Buntings remain at Long Nab, mostly in the third field north of the observatory, and a Woodcock was at the scrape. 2 Chiffchaffs were spotted among a flock of tits near the castle. In Cornelian Bay there were 3 Red-throated Divers, 5 Common Scoter, 6 Purple Sandpipers and a Grey Plover, while in the ravine there was a Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Treecreeper. 4 Little Grebes, 35 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye, 2 Goosanders, 8 Cormorants and a Coot were at Seamer Road Mere, and a Chiffchaff was at Westwood Court. 26 Purple Sandpipers were at their usual roost in the harbour, high on the rocks due to the tide height.

A Waxwing was again seen at Willymath Close in Burniston throughout the morning. A Red-throated Diver was at the harbour entrance, and at Seamer Road Mere there was a Kingfisher, a Goldeneye, 2 drake Goosanders and a Sparrowhawk. 150+ Pink-footed Geese went south over Peasholm and 355+ flew over Long Nab. The sea off Long Nab was generally quiet, with the main sightings being 2 Mute Swans and 7 Red-throated Divers on the sea, and 3 Eider and 2 Common Scoter heading south. A Great Northern Diver was spotted off Marine Drive, flying south.

Early this morning 6 Waxwings were feeding in Rowan trees in Willymath Close, Burniston. 45 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Cayton Carrs. 3 Snow Buntings were in the 4th field north of the observation hut at Long Nab, and there was a Woodcock in the ringing plantation. Highlights seen flying past Long Nab included a Black-throated Diver heading north and a Sandwich Tern heading south. A Fieldfare, a Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrests and a Treecreeper were spotted on Castle Hill this afternoon, and a Little Auk was in the harbour.

Early this morning 55 Pink-footed Geese flew over Dean Road, while 3 Little Auks went south and 2 Velvet Scoters went north past Long Nab. 5 Common Scoters were in North Bay. The Pallas's Warbler was seen again in the early afternoon, among a tit flock on the south side of Castle Hill, and a Chiffchaff was there later on. 2 drake Goosanders were on Seamer Road Mere.

Both the Hume's Leaf and Pallas's Warblers were seen again today on the south side of Castle Hill first thing in the morning, though for the rest of the day they remained elusive with just brief sightings and occasional calls. Also seen at Castle Hill were 31 Siskins heading south, 2 Chiffchaffs, a Blackcap and a Goldcrest, while 2 Bramblings and a Treecreeper were at Paradise. At Wykeham South Lake there were 8 Great Crested Grebes and 2 Goldeneye, and 45 Pink-footed Geese flew over. 3 Shoveler and 5 Teal were at Seamer Tip Pool, a Chiffchaff was at Burton Riggs, and 32 Cormorants were off Marine Drive. At Crook Ness a single Twite was spotted among 80+ Linnets in the early afternoon, while later on 2 Twite were seen there and a Snow Bunting was in the third field north of Long Nab. 15 Whooper Swans were seen flying south over Long Nab and then out across the sea towards Filey. A Waxwing flew south over Crossgates. A Great White Egret was seen from a train between Scarborough and Malton, probably in the Willerby-Sherburn section. A short sewatch from Marine Drive saw a Great Northern Diver fly north (then presumed same south later), two Teal and 25 Common Scoter north. Two Chiffchaffs at Ravenscar (incl Bent Rigg Lane) plus three at Hood Lane, Cloughton.

At Castle Hill this morning there was a Woodcock, a Chiffchaff, small numbers of thrushes arriving, including 45 Blackbirds and 35 Redwings, a Brambling and 5 Siskins. A Pallas's Warbler was spotted there with a tit flock mid-morning and was still present on the south side mid-afternoon, where there was also a Hume's Warbler later in the afternoon. Additional counts there include 2 Woodcock, a Jack Snipe, a Fieldfare, 16 Blackbirds, 4 Goldcrests, and 19 Bramblings that came in and continued west. A Great Northern Diver flew north past Marine Drive, and a Goldeneye and a Red-breasted Merganser were in the South Bay. A Waxwing was again seen at Willymath Close in Burniston this morning but had gone by the afternoon. Highlights from Long Nab include 2 Snow Buntings and 3 Woodcock present, while passing by were a Scaup, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 3 Great Northern Divers, 5 Pomarine Skuas, 7 Great Skuas, an Arctic Skua and 3 Little Auks. 14 Purple Sandpipers were roosting in the harbour and 30+ Pink-footed Geese flew over Stepney southwards just before dark.

Early this morning a Little Auk was sadly seen crashing into the rock armour off Marine Drive. 41 Pink-footed Geese were seen heading north over Taylor Way, where a Jack Snipe was flushed from the pools. 2 Shoveler were at Seamer Tip pool, and a Great White Egret was near Wykeham Lakes in a flooded field, and later seen at the lake. At Cornelian Bay a Snow Bunting was seen flying north, a Puffin and 5 Red-throated Divers were in the bay, and 2 Stonechats and a Fieldfare were in the ravine. 5 Little Egrets were at Folkton sewage works and a Swallow flew north over Cayton Bay. Highlights from Long Nab include a Snow Bunting flying over the field north of the observatory, 2 Puffins and 9 Red-throated Divers offshore, a Woodcock flushed from "short hedge", 39 Pink-footed Geese flying south, and small numbers of common migrants on the move. A Brambling was at Givendale in Dalby Forest, and the Great Grey Shrike was spotted again in the Derwent Head Rigg area of Langdale Forest.

Highlights passing Long Nab this morning include a Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 2 Velvet Scoter, 5 Pochard and 3 Eider. A Little Auk was seen off Marine Drive in the castle area. A Bittern was photographed at a pool on Taylor Way (Scarborough business Park, Seamer) before it flew towards the large pool (D Henderson).
