Thursday 29th May 2014

A very disappointing day on the migrant front with a lone Spotted Flycatcher at Long Nab being the only new in bird.

The Redshank and Wood Sandpiper remained on Flotmanby Carr and the adult Whooper Swan and a Common Sandpiper were on Potter Brompton Carr (no general access).

Sunday 25th May 2014

It was another outstanding spring day for Scarborough. For starters, late news from yesterday was received concerning a HOOPOE which was seen briefly down War Dike Lane at Ravenscar, it was unsuccessfully searched for during the morning however the original finder came across it again along Bent Rigg Lane during the evening, it will hopefully still be present tomorrow.
But it was at Long Nab again where the real action was at, claiming yet another first for Scarborough! This time in the form of a BLYTH'S REED WARBLER!
The bird was discovered in song during the morning in Hundale, the bird was trapped and ringed early evening and was relocated to Crook Ness due to the fact Hundale is a private site where there are clear access issues.
Also in Hundale were 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Willow Warbler including one northern bird and the Wood Warbler present for its 3rd day and a Wheatear was near the Hut.
Elsewhere a Whinchat and 2 Cuckoo were at Ravenscar, and a Wood Sandpiper was on Johnson's Marsh.

Saturday 24 May 2014

Saturday 24th May 2014

The Long Nab area stole the thunder again during the day with more scarce migrants, the Wood Warbler remained in Hundale where a Red-breasted Flycatcher was also found, the first spring record for Scarborough. A little later a very vocal Marsh Warbler was found in Crook Ness where it remained throughout the day though usually stayed deep in cover which puts the year list on to a very respectable 199!
Common migrants were almost none existent, a Tree Pipit and a Whitethroat on Castle Hill, a Willow Warbler along South Cliff and a Spotted Flycatcher in Hundale were new in.
At Wykeham South Lake there were 7 Egyptian Geese, 6 Ringed Plover, 4 Little Ringed Plover and 4 Dunlin and 2 Dunlin were on Scalby Lodge Pond.
