Sunday 31st March

The main highlight from Long Nab this morning was a Sooty Shearwater flying south. At Seamer Road Mere there were just 13 Tufted Ducks and 4 Teal remaining, plus 9 Chiffchaffs and a Blackcap all singing.

This morning's highlights from Long Nab include a Hooded Crow flying north and a Great White Egret flying north-west, while the Whimbrel remains present. Wykeham South Lake had 5 Barnacle Geese, 2 Egyptian Geese, a drake Pintail, 3 Goldeneye and a Little Egret. 3 Buzzards, 2 Kestrels, 2 Goshawks, 4 Chiffchaffs and 2 Nuthatches were seen from the road near Little Hilla Green Farm. There were 2 Water Rails again at the Open Air Theatre, and a Red Kite flew over Cayton then towards the Eastfield/Crossgates area. Another Hooded Crow plus a Siskin were seen near Holbeck, and there were 8 Purple Sandpipers on the rocks near the Clock Cafe. 4 Grey Wagtails were spotted in Forge Valley. There were Green Woodpeckers calling at Ravenscar and at Hayburn Wyke, and a White Wagtail was with 5 Pied Wagtails at Ravenscar, where there was also a Red Kite. 21 Chiffchaffs were heard singing between the Flask Inn and Scalby Mills, and a Shelduck was seen on Cloughton Pond.

Friday 29th March

45 Whooper Swans were first seen sitting on the sea off Long Nab early today, before finally moving off northwards later in the morning. Another 9 Whooper Swans were seen at Wykeham South Lake, where there were also 5 Goldeneye, a Buzzard, a Barn Owl, a Kestrel, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Little Egrets, 5 Barnacle Geese, 2 Redshank, 2 Oystercatchers, 2 Egyptian Geese, and a Goshawk nearby. 2 Dark-bellied Brent Geese flew south past Long Nab, and 11 Pink-footed Geese flew from Seamer Tip Pool towards Cayton and then northwards. A Siskin was seen at Burton Riggs, a Blackcap was at Reasty Bank, and 2 Red Kites were seen at Stony Marl, Fylingdales.

The only news in today is from Long Nab, where the Whimbrel was once again present, and a Hooded Crow, a Sand Martin and 102 Meadow Pipits all flew north.

At Potter Brompton Carr this morning there were 21 Wigeon, 18 Teal, 4 Snipe, a Pink-footed Goose, a pair of Curlews and a Peregrine. 16 Tufted Duck, 6 Great Crested Grebes and 2 Egyptian Geese were at Wykeham South Lake, while 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 2 Oystercatchers, 7 Gadwall and 6 Tufted Duck were at Brompton Ponds. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was also seen heading west over Burton Riggs. The Great Grey Shrike was once more showing well at the top of Housedale. There was a Stonechat at Seamer Tip and a Hooded Crow at Scarborough Waste Treatment works.

6 Shags and a Red-throated Diver were spotted off Marine Drive early this morning, and later 60 Pink-footed Geese were seen flying north at Long Nab. A Long-eared Owl was sadly found dead at Wrench Green, probably hit by a car. Also at Wrench Green there were a pair of Kingfishers, and at Scalby Mills just 21 Wigeon.

A drake Pintail, a Gadwall, 4 Goldeneye, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 12 Cormorants and 2 Oystercatchers were present at Wykeham South Lake this morning, while at Seamer Road Mere there were 18 Tufted Duck, 4 Teal and 7 singing Chiffchaffs. 7 displaying Goshawks were reported from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint, and a pair of Wheatears were seen at Hollin Gill, Fylingdales Moor.

Sunday 24th March

A Little Grebe, Coot, 4 Teal, a female Goosander, 22 Tufted Duck and 5 singing Chiffchaffs were at Seamer Road Mere, while at Wykeham South Lake there were 13 Whooper Swans, Gadwall, Shelduck, a drake Pintail, 3 Goldeneye, 4 Great Crested Grebes, 13 Cormorants and a Sand Martin. The Great Grey Shrike was still in the clearing at the top of Housedale and a male Wheatear was in a field just west of Malton Cote Farm. Another Wheatear was at Cloughton Wyke, and a Little Owl was seen in a broken wall by the road down to the wyke. 6 Chiffchaffs and several Willow Tits were located round Givendale and Hawdale Riggs. A Red Kite, 2 Willow Tits, 2 Marsh Tits, 6 Buzzards, a Grey Wagtail and a Brambling were in Ellerburn. At least 12 singing Chiffchaffs were heard between Scalby Mills and Hayburn Wyke, and a White Wagtail was seen at Cromer Point. At the harbour this evening there were 24 Purple Sandpipers roosting on the east pier, and 59 Turnstones in the west pier car park. A male Hen Harrier and 2 Red Kites were seen at Hutton Buscel. A female Marsh Harrier was spotted going west along Troutsdale.

The Water Rail was again at the Open Air Theatre this morning, and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were again in Peasholm Park. A Jack Snipe was seen at Taylor Way Pools, a drake Pintail was at Scampston Park Lake, and the Great Grey Shrike was again at the top of Housedale.

Highlights from Long Nab this morning include 3 Eiders and a White wagtail flying south, and 2 Goosanders flying north. A Sand Martin flew south over Crossgates and a Red Kite flew over Troutsdale. A drake Shoveler was on Seamer Road Mere and the Great Grey Shrike was again seen in the Housedale clearing. At Ellerburn Fish Farm there were 2 Grey Wagtails, and an Osprey was seen being mobbed by corvids before it flew off northwards. 150 Fieldfare, 45 Chaffinch and 21 Brambling were at Wilton Heights.

Highlights from Long Nab this morning include the Whimbrel which remains there; a male Wheatear by the observation hut and a second one that flew in and continued northwards; and 4 Whooper Swans, a Marsh Harrier and 2 Barnacle Geese all going north. A Water Rail was at the Open Air Theatre again, plus 3 singing Chiffchaffs. 3 White Wagtails, 2 Chiffchaffs, a Sparrowhawk, a Peregrine, 8 Greylags and 14 Linnets were seen at Ravenscar, and there were 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Peasholm Park. At the harbour this evening there were 12  roosting Purple Sandpipers, and a Wheatear on the wall.

A Raven flew east over Hutton Buscel early this morning. Highlights from Long Nab this morning include a Whimbrel at Crook Ness, 9 Whooper Swans going north, and 2 Sandwich Terns also going north (the earliest record of these for Scarborough). Later in the day at Long Nab a Wheatear came in off the sea after briefly landing on a boat, and 4 White and 31 Pied Wagtails were in the bare field north of the observation hut. 2 Wheatears were also seen above Snainton round midday before flying off northwards. A Buzzard, a Sparrowhawk and 2 Chiffchaffs were at Seamer Road Mere, 9 Gadwall and 2 Oystercatchers were at Brompton Ponds, and 2 Chiffchaffs and a Brimstone butterfly were seen at Burton Riggs.

A herd of 69 Whooper Swans flew northwards over Wykeham Lakes. A Whimbrel was present early this morning on the rocks immediately south of Crook Ness. A Sand Martin flew south and 9 Eiders flew north past Long Nab. A Red-throated Diver was spotted off Marine Drive, where there was also a large raft of Kittiwakes on the sea, and a Puffin flew past to the south. A possible Osprey was reported heading north over Osgoodby Top, and the Great Grey Shrike was once again present in Dalby Forest.

A Chiffchaff was on Yedmandale Road early this morning, and another at Burton Riggs later. A White Wagtail flew north at Long Nab. Wykeham South Lake had 23 Tufted Duck, 25 Coot, 1 Gadwall, 2 Egyptian Geese, 17 Cormorants and a Goldeneye. The Great Grey Shrike was seen again in Dalby, plus about 20 Crossbills. There were 6 female Goosanders at Harwood Dale Lake, and one male at Throxenby Mere. A Whooper Swan flew east over Seamer Tip with a Greylag, while 19 more Whoopers were seen heading north past the Castle Headland and Long Nab in the afternoon.

At Potter Brompton Carr this morning there were 5 Pink-footed Geese, 37 Wigeon, a Shelduck, 2 Gadwall and 17 Lapwing, some of them displaying. 2 Water Rails were again seen at the Open Air Theatre, plus a Dipper. The Great Grey Shrike was seen once again in the Housedale clearing, over which a Redwing and a Goshawk were also seen. 150+ Common Gulls were in a field near Hutton Buscel.

A Chiffchaff was singing in Wrench Green early this morning. There were 600+ Common/Black-headed Gulls in a field at Hutton Buscel, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 22 Cormorants, 4 Goldeneye and 5 Great Crested Grebes. The Great Grey Shrike was once again showing well in the clearing at the top of Housedale in Dalby Forest.

The main highlight from Long Nab this morning was a Bean Goose flying south. The Great Grey Shrike was again on display at Housedale, Dalby. 18 Redshanks were roosting at Johnson's Marsh at high tide, and there were 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Scalby Mills.

A single Barnacle Goose flew south past Long Nab this morning, while at Johnson's Marsh there were 34 Teal, 36 Wigeon, 2 Shelduck, 2 Tufted Duck and 18 Redshank. A Water Rail, a Kingfisher and a Chiffchaff were seen in the Open Air Theatre area, and a Mediterranean Gull and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were at Scalby Mills. There were 4 Green Sandpipers at Charity Farm in Thornton, plus 25 Redwing and 20 Fieldfare.

The Kingfisher was seen again this morning at the Open Air Theatre, and a Yellow-Legged Gull and 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were at Scalby Mills. Johnson's Marsh had 43 Teal, 2 Shelduck and 3 Tufted Duck. About 250 Fieldfares were seen with 150 Starlings in a field at Ebbberston Low Moor, and 150 Fieldfares and Redwings in a mixed flock were in the field at the entrance to Dalby Forest. The Great Grey Shrike was still present at the top of Housedale, together with 4 Crossbills and 4 Common Buzzards. 20 Purple Sandpipers arrived on the outer harbour wall in the early evening.

A raft of 70 Kittiwakes and a pair of Eiders were seen off Marine Drive this morning, while a Great Northern Diver was in the harbour. A Green Sandpiper flew north-east over Taylor Way, and a Crossbill was seen flying north at Cornelian Bay. Seamer Road Mere had 42 Tufted Duck, a Little Grebe and 2 Chiffchaffs. A Little Egret, a Grey Wagtail, 45 Siskins and a Marsh Tit were seen at Ellerburn, and at Scalby Mills there was a Mediterranean Gull and a Norwegian-ringed Great Black-backed Gull.

There was a Chiffchaff seen in Wrench Green today, and another one singing at Peasholm Gap. A Barn Owl, 6 Goldeneye, 2 Egyptian Geese, a Curlew, and 6 Oystercatchers were seen at Wykeham South Lake, plus a Reed Bunting and Yellowhammer in full song. There were 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Scalby Mills.

This morning saw an increase in southerly Kittiwake movement, with 77 passing Long Nab, while 3 Eiders also passed northwards. There were 7 Mediterranean Gulls at Holbeck, a Great Northern Diver in the harbour mouth, and the Great Grey Shrike was again present at Housedale. A Green Sandpiper, a Little Egret, 9 Snipe and a Reed Bunting were seen on Thornton Carrs, and 41+ Pied Wagtails and 6 Grey Wagtails were at Thornton Dale sewage works. A Red Kite was seen between North Moor and Wykeham village.

The Water Rail was again seen at the Open Air Theatre this morning. At Wykeham South Lake there were 2 Little Grebes, 4 Great Crested Grebes, 12 Cormorants, a Goldeneye and the Shelduck with its hybrid mate. There has also been an unconfirmed report from early this afternoon of a probable Bearded Tit in brambles at the side of the ditch just before the viewpoint. The Great Grey Shrike remains in the clearing at the top of Housedale in Dalby Forest, where 6 Crossbills were also seen today. 4 Bramblings were spotted near Seamer sewage farm.

A Little Egret was seen at Scampston this morning. At Wykeham South Lake there was a drake Shoveler, 6 Goldeneye, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Oystercatcher and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. In the copse to the east of Darrell's Low Farm there were 70 Chaffinch, 20 Tree Sparrow and 6 Yellowhammer.

Early this morning 12 or more Bottle-nosed Dolphins were spotted from Long Nab, about 1-2 miles offshore, travelling south. At Johnson's Marsh there were 3 Tufted Duck, 2 Shelduck, 14 Teal and 2 Oystercatchers. 13 Snipe and a Little Egret were seen on Seamer Mead, another Little Egret was at Seamer Carr, and a Green Sandpiper was seen at Star Carr. A mixed flock of 120+ Chaffinch, Brambling and Yellowhammer remains in the small field on the edge of Wykeham Forest, while nearby there were 2 Willow Tits, 12 Crossbills, 2 Lesser Redpolls, about 18 Siskins, 4 Bullfinch and 4 Treecreepers. Seamer Road Mere hosted 4 Teal, 33 Tufted Duck, a drake Goosander, coot, Little Grebe and 4 Siskin.
