Monday 30th December

Waxwings were again seen in Crossgates - 8 in trees off Heron Lane, and later in trees behind Plover Gardens. 80 Pink-footed Geese, 6 White-fronted Geese and 130 Lapwings were on Cayton Carr, while 2 Great Egrets, about 920 Lapwings, a Redshank, a Dunlin and 12 Snipe were at Potter Brompton Carr. 400+ Golden Plover were seen at Cockmoor Hall, 80+ Siskins and 2 Dippers were spotted in Troutsdale, and a female Hawfinch was perched by the Hilla Green bridge. A male and a female Goshawk and a Merlin were seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint, where a single Waxwing flew over south. In the Ebberston Common area of Dalby there were 4 Willow Tits, 15 Crossbills, and a Goshawk flew overhead. 8 Ringed Plovers were at Scalby Mills, a Chiffchaff and a Redshank were at Seamer sewage works, and a Water Rail and 10 Grey Partridges were on the east side of Seamer Tip. A Kingfisher and a Grey Wagtail were seen at the top of Peasholm, and on Johnson's Marsh there were 55 Canada Geese, 9 Herons, 9 Curlew and 17 Teal. At North Ings/Low Marishes there were about 300 Teal, 80 Wigeon,a Goosander, 120 Mallard, 40 Gadwall, 8 Herons, and 2000+ Starlings heading to roost.

6 Whooper Swans were still on Cayton Carr this morning, and 6 Little Egrets were at Folkton Bridge. A single Waxwing was in Crossgates at Nightingale Lane, 17 were in trees opposite Greenfinch Close, and one was in the B&Q car park. An adult Mediterranean Gull flew north over the field below Plaxtons, and 5 were in the Holbeck car park, including the Polish-ringed PNN5 bird which is back for its 7th winter. 3 Corn Buntings were in stubble at the side of the A64 bypass near Metes Lane, Seamer. 4 drake Eiders landed off Long Nab, and 25 Curlew were in the field at Crook Ness. At Scalby Mills there were 8 Ringed Plovers, 439 Wigeon, a Mallard and 3 Teal. A Red-throated Diver was in North Bay, a Lapwing and 4 Purple Sandpipers were in Cornelian Bay, and a Common Scoter was feeding off Black Rocks in South Bay. At Wykeham South Lake there was a Shoveler, 6 Goldeneye, 22 Gadwall, a Stonechat, and a Snipe, while 50+ Lapwings flew south-west. 80+ Pink-footed Geese flew inland over Dean Road, and a Chiffchaff was seen in Hutton Buscel.

Saturday 28th December

3 Teal and 3 Wigeon were at Burton Riggs this morning, and at Seamer Tip Pool there were 107 Teal, 9 Wigeon, and a female Merlin flew over. A Pale-bellied Brent Goose, a Goosander, and a Goldeneye flew past Long Nab, and 2 Fieldfares and a Redwing flew in off the sea. 90+ Goldfinches, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a large mixed flock of tits, a Grey Wagtail, a Redwing and a Fieldfare were seen in the Dean Road cemetery. 6 Whooper Swans were on Folkton Carr; 2 Lapwings were at Scalby Mills; a Canada Goose was in North Bay; and a Grey Wagtail flew from Peasholm Park towards Peasholm Glen. 50-60 Bramblings were again at Haygate, Dalby, and 2 Red-throated Divers were in the harbour. At Low Marishes there were 180 Teal, 100 Wigeon and a Snipe, and just south of there at North Ings there were: 250 Wigeon, 80 Teal, 39 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 2 Shelduck, a hybrid Shelduck, 3 Goldeneye and 5 Tufted Duck. 5 Whooper Swans were at Low Newstead Grange, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 19 Gadwall, 6 Goldeneye, and 10 Great Crested Grebes. 2 Eiders, 2 Red-throated Divers and 4 Shags were in Cayton Bay, and 2 Red-throated Divers were in Cornelian Bay.

Friday 27th December

Waxwings galore again! 18 near Long Lane railway crossing, Crossgates, and 37 in the park and feeding on the corner of Nightingale Lane, plus 55 at Cayton playing field. A Chiffchaff was on Marine Drive, where 24 Common Scoter were seen offshore. A Red-throated Diver and a Razorbill were in North Bay and an adult Mediterranean Gull was at Scalby Mills. A female Blackcap was observed feeding on Mahonia flowers on Heron Lane. At Low Marishes this afternoon there were 70 Pink-footed Geese, 230 Greylag Geese, 5 Whooper Swans, a Shelduck, 160 Wigeon, 150 Pied Wagtails and 2200 Lapwings. In Dalby Forest a Green Woodpecker was at lower Flaxdale and a few Bramblings were seen between there and Housedale, while 60+ very vocal Crossbills were still around Haygate.

Thursday 26th December

A Red-throated Diver and a Shag were in the harbour this morning. A Green Sandpiper, 6 Snipe, 110 Linnets and 12 Yellowhammers were at Thornton Carrs, where 600 Pink-footed Geese were seen taking off in the distance at Low Marishes. A Peregrine and 4 Crossbills were seen at Standing Stones, Cloughton. In the late afternoon 5 Whooper Swans, 60 Pink-footed Geese in flight, and 200+ Fieldfares were seen at Low Marishes, and a similar number of Fieldfares were also seen at Malton Cote, Ebberston.

Wednesday 25th December

43 Waxwings were again behind Plover Gardens, and also on the corner of Nightingale Lane and Heron Lane. A Great Crested Grebe was at Burton Riggs, and a male Blackcap was spotted in Falsgrave Park. At Seamer Road Mere there were 32 Tufted Duck, 2 Goldeneye and a Chiffchaff. The car park at Haygate/Dalby was alive with birds, including 3 Marsh Tits, up to 50 Bramblings and a similar number of Crossbills bathing in puddles, one of which was in full song. 24 Purple Sandpipers and 49 Turnstones were roosting at the harbour this afternoon, while 47 Redshank were roosting on the sea defences at the southern end of North Bay. A Red-throated Diver, a Shag and 8 Cormorants were in South Bay/the harbour, and 2 Red-throated Diver, 3 Guillemots and 2 Cormorants were off Marine Drive.

Tuesday 24th December

Waxwings were again in the park behind Plover Gardens this morning, and 8 were also seen at the corner of Greylands Park Drive and Wreyfield Drive. 3 Twite were with about 60 Linnets at Crook Ness, and a Snipe and a Kingfisher were spotted sitting together at Scalby Mills. In the Dalby/Housedale area there were about 30 Bramblings, 3 Marsh Tits and 20+ Crossbills. A Willow Tit, a Barn Owl, 6 Snipe and 46 Teal were at Potter Brompton Carr.

Waxwings were seen again (46 counted) throughout the day, flying around Nightingale Lane, Sandpiper Close, and the park behind Plover Gardens, Crossgates. One male and two female Goosanders flew north over Burton Riggs, and 9 Goosanders were at Harwood Dale Lake. 37 Greenfinches and a flock of 80+ Siskins were seen near the river in the Hackness area.

A drake Goldeneye was at Burton Riggs this morning, and Waxwings were again on the 'birds' estate in Crossgates, with 40 also being seen there in the afternoon, in the park behind Plover Gardens. 7 Little Egrets were on Cayton Carrs, near the bridge. In Dalby Forest, Haygate area there were still good numbers of Bramblings (about 50 near the car park), plus about 30 Lesser Redpoll, Siskin, 2 Willow Tits and 25+ Crossbills.

A Chiffchaff was on Woodall Avenue this morning. Waxwings were abundant again: 33 were feeding near Plover Gardens, and later 34 were in the park between Plover Gardens and Curlew Drive, with 39 plus 12 in the same area late morning. 2 Little Egrets were on Clayton Carr.

Thursday 19th December

17 Waxwings were seen near Heron Lane this morning and 34 were seen over Falcon Avenue, while in the afternoon 42 were in the park behind Plover Gardens. At Johnson's Marsh there were 7 Herons, 25 Teal and 12 Moorhens. At Harwood Dale Lake there were  4 Goosanders and 2 Cormorants (sinensis), and at Seamer Road Mere there were 2 male and 3 female Goosanders. 11+ Crossbills were seen in Wykeham Forest, 2 of them singing, and the ringed Chiffchaff at The Dene was today joined by a second individual. Late this afternoon there were 3 Green Sandpipers and about 50 Fieldfares at Charity Farm/Thornton Carrs.

The 2020 Michael Clegg Memorial Yorkshire Birdrace takes place on 5th January.
The Scarborough Team of Nick Addey, Chris Bradshaw, Steve Wignill and Chris Bell will be rushing round our recording area trying to beat our 5 year average score of 98 species. We compete against about another 15 teams also covering their local patch from dawn (most before that 😨) til dusk.

Wednesday 18th December

Waxwings were around Crossgates again today: some on Nightingale Lane; 36 at the end of Kingfisher Close, one of which was taken by a Sparrowhawk; and 30 at Heron Lane park. 2 Golden Plover and 5 Fieldfares flew south at Long Nab, and 60 Linnets were round Crook Ness. Approximately 50 Bramblings were near the car park at Haygate, Dalby, along with a few Crossbills and Siskins. 3 skeins of geese, probably Canada Geese, flew over Burniston late in the afternoon, and a Barn Owl was flying near Racecourse Road this evening.

The ringed Chiffchaff remained at The Dene, Peasholm today, and again Waxwings were seen in a variety of locations: 36 in the Nightingale Lane area of Crossgates, 11 at The Dene, and a number in the park behind Plover Gardens, Crossgates. 13 Pink-footed Geese were in the field below Seamer Tip pool early in the morning, a Little Egret flew from the dyke on the east side of Seamer Tip, and 2 Little Grebes were at Burton Riggs.

Today's Waxwings: 8 were seen early morning near the Oak Wheel in Burniston, 35 were around Raven Close/Nightingale Lane in Crossgates, 35 were in an ash tree near Long Lane railway crossing in Crossgates, and this afternoon 30 were at Heron Lane park in Crossgates. The Scaup and 2 Wigeon were again at Burton Riggs, and a Marsh Tit was on the east side of Seamer Tip. 378 Common Gulls went south past Long Nab this morning, and at Scalby Mills there were 458 Wigeon, 6 Ringed Plover and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. The ringed Chiffchaff was still in gardens at The Dene, Peasholm, while another was at Seamer Road Mere. 4 Whooper Swans were seen at Low Marishes.

Waxwings galore again today: 3 opposite the Duchess pub; 32 in Cayton; 50 around Raven Close/Nightingale Lane, Crossgates; 34 at Plover Gardens off Heron Lane; 17 near the Oak Wheel pub in Burniston and 15 on Dean Road opposite the Ellis Centre. The Scaup was still at Burton Riggs, 2 Wigeon circled over Seamer Tip pool, a Red-throated Diver was in the harbour, and a Goldeneye and 8 Teal were in Cornelian Bay. A Kingfisher was seen at Scalby Mills flying over the beck, and a ringed Chiffchaff was in gardens at The Dene, Peasholm. Results of a BTO WeBS count at Wykeham Lakes (all the lakes): 2 Mute Swans, 16 Teal, 64 Wigeon, 27 Gadwall, 44 Mallard, 6 Goldeneye, 38 Tufted Ducks, 11 Cormorants, 9 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Little Grebes and 91 Coot. 900 Lapwings and 800 Golden Plover were at Willerby/Binnington Carrs.

At about 2 o'clock this morning Pink-footed Geese were heard calling over Castle Headland. About 45 Waxwings were seen this morning near the entrance to, and in the grounds of, the hospital; 22 more were seen near the Oak Wheel pub in Burniston. A Chiffchaff was in gardens at The Dene, Peasholm, and Redwings were still present around the Seamer Tip area. At Low Marishes 6 Whooper Swans were with 4 Mute Swans. 3 Marsh Tits, a Willow Tit, about 25 Crossbills and 20+ Siskins were seen between Dalby Centre and Pexton Lake this afternoon.

42 Waxwings were seen in Burniston today, initially at Willymath Close, then flying off towards the Three Jolly Sailors pub. 4 Waxwings were also spotted by Woodlands Ravine bridge before flying off to the north.The Scaup was again at Burton Riggs, along with 20 Tufted Duck and a Kingfisher. In the New Close Rigg area of Dalby Forest a Goshawk was seen, plus 7 Willow Tits, about 50 Crossbills, and about 200 Siskins. 177 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills, and at Taylor Way pools there were 2 Jack Snipe, 3 Common Snipe, 28 Gadwall and 70+ Redwings. 160 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Muston this afternoon, and 4 Little Egrets were with cattle around the Folkton sewage farm.

At Seamer Road Mere this morning there were 48 Mute Swans, 43 Tufted Duck, 4 Little Grebes,17 Moorhens, 4 Goldeneye, 5 Chiffchaffs, 12 Goldcrests and a pair of Goosanders. 2 Waxwings were seen on Woodlands Ravine, about 30 at Willymath Close, and about 20 in trees between South End and The Three Jolly Sailors pub. The Scaup was still at Burton Riggs this morning, and a second calendar year Marsh Harrier was spotted at Ings Farm, Wykeham.

A Marsh Harrier, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 5 Goldeneye, 53 Coot, 21 Tufted Duck and 17 Mallards were at Wykeham South Lake this morning. 39 Pink-footed Geese flew north at Long Nab, and at Burton Riggs the Scaup remained along with a Teal, and both male and female Goosanders. Waxwings were again in abundance around Burniston - 26 were seen in gardens opposite the Three Jolly Sailors pub in the morning, and later smaller groups were seen just south of the pub. A Red-throated Diver and Little Egret was at the harbour, and a Mediterranean Gull was on rooftops at Holbeck. 180 Greylag Geese and 11 Mute Swans were seen at Low Marishes.

53 Waxwings were on Rocks Lane, Burniston this morning, near the Three Jolly Sailors pub, and were still there round midday though very flighty. A single Waxwing was also spotted flying south-west over Woodall Avenue. The Scaup remained at Burton Riggs along with 2 Wigeon, and at Harwood Dale Lake there were 6 Teal, 26 Wigeon, 2 Goosanders, 120 Fieldfare and 30 Redwings. A Slavonian Grebe was seen just outside the harbour this afternoon, and a single Whooper Swan was at Seamer Road Mere.

22 Waxwings were in trees at The Three Jolly Sailors pub, and 2 were at Willymath Close, in Burniston this morning. The Scaup remains at Burton Riggs, and 3 Barnacle Geese and a Goldeneye flew west from Seamer Tip pool. 11 Whooper Swans were at Seamer Road Mere, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 8 Teal, an Egyptian Goose, 80 Wigeon, 21 Gadwall, 7 Goldeneye, 6 Little Grebes, 10 Great Crested Grebes, 9 Cormorants and a Redshank. 600+ Golden Plover were seen circling over Binnington Carr. At Low Marishes there were 4 Whooper Swans, 20 Mute Swans, and 2 mixed flocks of geese containing a total of: 14 White-fronted Geese (Russian), about 1260 Pink-footed Geese, 315 Greylag Geese, a Dark-bellied Brent Goose and 3 Barnacle Geese. A Red Kite and 10 Buzzards were spotted at Beedale, while a female Merlin, a Peregrine, 10 Bramblings and good numbers of Redwings and Fieldfares were seen at Ings Farm, Wykeham. At Seamer Tip pools this afternoon there were 3 Mute Swans, 262 Greylags, 77 Canada Geese, 33 Mallard, 22 Gadwall, 3 Tufted Duck, 4 Coot and 10 Redwings.

Three Great White Egrets were feeding at the River Derwent south of Wykeham Lakes. The drake Scaup was still at Burton Riggs. Scalby Mills had 118 Wigeon and a Kingfisher. A Kingfisher was also feeding from the rocks at Long Nab where a pair of Stonechats were near the observatory. Two Waxwings made a brief early visit to berries at Willymath Close, Burniston but had not returned by midday. Two Great Crested Grebes were in Cornelian Bay. Perhaps more thrushes arriving from the east; two Redwings at Crook Ness and Hood Lane at Cloughton held 12 Redwings and 10 Blackbirds.

The drake Scaup was still at Burton Riggs where a Little Egret also flew south plus a Kingfisher and Chiffchaff present. Eight Waxwings were feeding on berries opposite the Oak Wheel PH in Burniston then flew west at 08.45, a further 12 were at Barry's Lane at 11.15, and 28 were again seen off and on through the day at Eden Drive off Seamer road. Two Red-breasted Mergansers flew south at Long Nab.

48 Waxwings were briefly at Willymath Close, Burniston late morning before leaving northwards. 28 Waxwings were also seen off and on throughout the day at Eden Drive, off Seamer Road. The drake Scaup still at burton Riggs. At Seamer tip pool were a Merlin, 25 Gadwall, 4 Tufted Ducks and 5 Coot. A Chiffchaff was at Hood Lane, Cloughton where 16 Redwings flew west.

At Seamer Road Mere this morning there were 4 Goldeneye, a Goosander, a Wigeon, 2 Coot, 6 Little Grebes, a Kingfisher and a Chiffchaff. 31 Snow Buntings were in the fields north of Long Nab and the Waxwings were briefly seen again at Willymath Close, Burniston. At Potter Brompton Carr there were 2 Great Egrets, 3 White-fronted Geese, a Peregrine, 61 Golden Plovers, 380 Lapwings, 11 Snipe, a Stonechat, a Shoveler, 220+ Teal and 60+ Mallard. The Geese and the Golden Plovers flew off west. 30+ Crossbills, about the same number of Siskins, 4 Willow Tits, and 2 Marsh Tits. Wykeham South Lakes had 5 Goldeneye, 36 Wigeon, 61 Coot, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Little Grebes, 50+ Fieldfares and 25 Redwings.

Waxwings were at Willymath Close in Burniston again today - 13 this morning and 35 seen in the afternoon. A single Waxwing was again outside Cayton School. The Scaup remained at Burton Riggs, together with 2 redhead Goosanders. A Chiffchaff was in the hedge beside the A64 between Seamer and Crossgates, and 2 Snow Buntings were in the fields north of Long Nab. A Great Grey Shrike was spotted in a clearfell to the north of Ellerburn Bank. Apparently a large alien of Pink-footed Geese flew south over Burniston, but I suspect it was actually a skein!

Lots of Waxwings again today: 13 were seen at Willymath Close, Burniston this morning, and up to 35 were there later in the day. 8 were seen at the junction of Manor Road and Woodlands Ravine round midday, and 13 were there mid-afternoon. A single Waxwing was spotted outside Cayton School. The main highlight from Long Nab was a Lapland Bunting flying north. A drake Scaup was at Burton Riggs, partnered with a female Tufted Duck. 3 White-fronted Geese, 23 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Great Egrets and 35 Wigeon were at Potter Brompton Carr, viewable from the track leading to Haybridge Farm.

Waxwings galore! To summarise: groups of up to 25 Waxwings were seen around the Newlands Park Drive/Newland Park Crescent/ St Peter's School area throughout the morning. Groups also moved between Willymath Close in Burniston and somewhere to the north of there, with the number of birds seen there peaking at 65 this afternoon. At Wykeham South Lake this morning there were 79 Coot, 6 Goldeneye, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 5 Little Grebes, 3 Gadwall and 23 Tufted Duck. A Brambling was at Crook Ness, a Snow Bunting was behind the observation hut at Long Nab, and a Great Northern Diver flew past northwards. 6 Whooper Swans were spotted flying south over Crossgates early in the morning, and a Water Rail, a Kingfisher and 2 Willow Tits were seen at New Dike, Seamer Tip. Late in the afternoon a Little Owl, a Barn Owl and 7 Snipe were seen at Thornton Carrs.
