Saturday 31st July

Highlights past Long Nab included 116 Oystercatchers, Whimbrel, Mediterranean Gull, 19 Arctic and 10 Common Terns. A Willow Warbler was on the cliff top near Crook Ness. Birds around Cloughton Wyke included 50 Sand and 30 House Martins, Lesser Whitethroat and 5 Willow Warblers. Three Teal were at Johnson's Marsh. PHOTO- Great Tit by Martin Moseley.

Friday 30th July

A few waders on the move today. At Wykeham Lakes a Wood Sandpiper circled the lakes and left south, also there were 3 Little Ringed Plover and 3 Dunlin. 19 Whimbrel flew south past Long Nab where the male Stonechat turned up at the obs with four juveniles (perhaps both broods?). Thursday 29th July

At Wykeham Lakes 2 Common Sandpipers flew towards East Lake, where there were a Dunlin and 2 Yellow Wagtails, and a Goshawk flew over Predator Lake. 14 Curlew were in fields below Seamer Tip pool, about 150 Goldfinches were on the eastern side of Seamer Tip, and a Sedge Warbler was singing at New Dike. A Snipe flew in from the east at Long Nab this morning while 2 Sanderlings and 302 Swifts flew south. 8 Sandwich Terns were feeding at the north end of Cayton Bay.

Wednesday 28th July

A Kingfisher was at Wykeham East Lake yesterday evening, and today one Green Sandpiper was still at Northstile pool. A Yellow-legged Gull, 407 Swifts, 416 Sand Martins and 71 House Martins flew south past Long Nab, while 2 Mediterranean Gulls flew north. A Whimbrel and a moulting adult Mediterranean Gull were at Wykeham East Lake.

Tuesday 27th July

154 Greylag Geese, 4 Teal and 26 Black-headed Gulls were at Wykeham East Lake today, and the juvenie Cuckoo was again seen on Jugger Howe Moor.

Monday 26th July

A Golden Plover, a Knot, a Sanderling, and 2 Mediterranean Gulls flew south past Long Nab today, while 34 Arctic Terns flew north. A juvenile Cuckoo was at Jugger Howe Moor, and a Wheatear was spotted at Ravenscar.

Sunday 25th July

612 Common Scoter, a Mediterranean Gull, 3 Common Terns, 5 Arctic Terns and 2 Great Skuas flew past Long Nab this morning. 2 Green Sandpipers were at Northstile pool, Wrench Green. At least 10 Mediterranean Gulls were in South Bay this evening, including 2 juveniles, and an Arctic Tern flew north.

Saturday 24th July

At Long Nab a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was seen around a crab boat for 10 minutes before leaving south. 4 Back-tailed Godwits and 69 Common Scoter flew south past Long Nab, while 1,139 Common Scoter and 4 Mediterranean Gulls flew north. A Hobby flew over Crossgates, and 2 juvenile Cuckoos were again on the west side of Fylingdales Moor along the A169. A Whimbrel and a Curlew were at Wykeham East Lake, and a Greenshank circled in the late afternoon. A Tufted Duck with 4 young was at Old Silt Lake.

Friday 23rd July

263 Common Scoter and 3 Mediterranean Gulls flew north past Long Nab today, while 2 Ringed Plover and 2 Arctic Terns flew south. 2 Whimbrel flew north over Crossgates. Tufted Duck broods of 2 and 8 are still surviving and fairly well grown at Seamer Road Mere, and an additional brood of 5 was seen today. Moorhen numbers there are up to at least 72 and 2 new broods of Coot have hatched.

Thursday 22nd July

A Mediterranean Gull was with Black-headed Gulls at Scalby Mills this morning. A Little Owl, 2 adult and 2 young Grey Wagtails, and 3 Yellowhammers were seen from the road to Darrell Low Farm. A Kingfisher was seen at Trout Lake, and later one was at Wykeham South Lake. From the water park to Long Causeway Road there were 4 Yellowhammers, a Buzzard, 2 juvenile Yellow Wagtails, 2 Reed Buntings and 2 singing Whitethroats. A Black-tailed Godwit was still present at East Lake. 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 14 Turnstones and 144 Sandwich Terns flew north past Long Nab, and 6 Whimbrel flew south. A juvenile Cuckoo was seen in Sneaton Forest, and one successful pair of breeding Golden Plover were on Widow High Moor.

2 Great White Egrets flew north over Crossgates this morning, and 2 Buzzards flew over the Stepney Hill/Sandybed area. A juvenile Mediterranean Gull and 12 Whimbrel flew south past Long Nab, while 3 Whimbrel and 2 Great Skuas flew north. 4 Shelduck were at Johnson's Marsh, and a Little Egret and a Little Grebe were at Harwood Dale Lake.

Tuesday 20th July

At Wykeham Lakes this morning there were 6 Lapwing, a Dunlin, 2 Teal, 68 Black-headed Gulls and 6 Grey Herons, all at East Lake, while 3 Kingfishers were spotted around the lakes. This evening there were a Black-tailed Godwit, a Dunlin, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Egyptian Geese and 630 Herring Gulls, again at East Lake. A juvenile Caspian Gull was seen feeding off Long Nab in the middle of the day, while flying by northwards were a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, 4 Mediterranean Gulls, 361 Sandwich Terns and 3 Arctic Terns. A family of very vocal 3 Peregrines were seen over Hutton Buscel, one of them seeing off a Buzzard. In Dalby Forest a Turtle Dove was spotted in the Newclose Rigg area, and a Willow Tit at Crosscliffe. A first summer male Eider was sitting on rocks in front of Long Nab this afternoon.

Highlights from Long Nab today included a Whimbrel, 3 Turnstones and 288 Sand Martins flying south; 183 Sandwich Terns flying north; and a Willow Tit still at Crook Ness. A Red Kite was seen heading north from Hutton Buscel towards Ancat Farm.

Sunday 18th July

A Quail was singing early this morning at Long Nab, inland from the car park, a Willow Tit was singing at Crook Ness, and pair of Kestrels at Long Nab have fledged 2 juveniles. At least 2 Nightjars showed well at Newton House Plantation, May Beck last night. A juvenile Peregrine was seen circling over Crossgates, and 4 juvenile Cuckoos were seen on the western side of Fylingdales Moor along the A169.

Saturday 17th July

Early this morning adult and juvenile Tawny Owls were seen being mobbed by Blackbirds. A juvenile Green Woodpecker was spotted at the old alum quarry in Ravenscar, and a Little Egret and a Hobby were at Seamer Tip pool. A Bar-tailed Godwit flew north past Long Nab, 2 Shelduck were at Johnson's Marsh, a Wigeon and 8 Mandarins were at Harwood Dale Lake, and a Turtle Dove was singing at Pits Wood, Harwood Dale. A big feeding flock of 60+ Swifts was over the Hovingham Drive area in the late afternoon, and about 30 were screaming over Stepney. About 25 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 10 Herring Gulls were seen catching flying ants over Newby and others over Barmoor Lane included 3 Mediterranean Gulls, one a juvenile from this year.

Friday 16th July

A Tufted Duck at Burton Riggs this morning had 6 ducklings, while a Little Egret, 7 Curlew and 3 Herons were in the field below Seamer Tip pool. A Quail was singing at Wilton Ings, and a Cuckoo and a juvenile Wheatear were seen at Jugger Howe Moor. 2 pairs of Grasshopper Warblers have nested just south of Seamer Road Mere towards Dean's Garden Centre. An Osprey was seen circling Wykeham East and South Lakes, while a large, unidentified bird of prey was seen being mobbed by gulls over Falsgrave Park.

Thursday 15th July

A second calendar year Mediterranean Gull flew south past Long Nab this morning, while 2 Tufted Duck, 3 Whimbrel and a Cuckoo flew north. A Teal was at Johnson's Marsh, and 9 Common Scoter were on the sea off Holbeck. At Wykeham South Lake this evening there were a Common Sandpiper, 2 Egyptian Geese, a singing Sedge Warbler, Chiffchaff, Reed Warbler and Garden Warbler, 4 Swallows and 10 Sand Martins.

Wednesday 14th July

The first returning Turnstone flew past Long Nab this morning, as did a Great Skua and 312 Puffins. 32 Black-headed Gulls flew north-east over Crossgates, and a Turtle Dove was calling opposite Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint.

Tuesday 13th July

The juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was again off Long Nab this morning, while a Great Skua flew north, and a Little Owl was at Cliff Top House. 4 Curlew and 3 Oystercatchers were in the field south of Seamer Tip pool, and at Burton Riggs there were 2 Oystercatcher chicks. 7 Sandwich Terns were spotted heading north off Marine Drive.

Monday 12th July

An Avocet was seen flying south past Long Nab yesterday. This morning 25 Teal, 3 Wigeon, 482 Common Scoter and 2 Bar-tailed Godwits flew past, while a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was feeding offshore there before leaving northwards. A juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 37 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Common Gulls and 10 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were at Wykeham East Lake. In Dalby Forest a recently fledged Redstart was spotted at Crosscliffe, and a family group of Willow Tits were near Dixon's. A Turtle Dove was on the roadside near Malton Court Farm, Ebberston.

A male Peregrine, one of a pair that are seen regularly, was seen hunting over Crossgates this afternoon. Passing Long Nab southwards this morning were 7 Black-tailed Godwits, a Knot, a Dunlin, 15 Whimbrel, 13 Curlew, 27 Oystercatchers and 6 Redshank, while 2 Mediterranean Gulls flew north.

Friday 9th July

At Long Nab the Kestrel pair have fledged 2 young, while 4 Curlew flew north this evening.

Thursday 8th July

In Dalby Forest today a Ring-tailed Harrier was seen over New Close Rigg, while a Turtle Dove, a Goshawk, a Tree Pipit and a Garden Warbler were seen at Jerry Noddle. A Cuckoo was spotted in Wrench Green, while in Troutsdale a Kingfisher was up the river and a Goshawk and 2 juveniles were flying in the forestry. At Long Nab this evening 41 Common Scoter flew north, 6 Sandwich Terns flew south and 2 north, 3 Oystercatchers flew south, and 9 Puffins were on the water.

Wednesday 7th July

5 Mediterranean Gulls were sitting on Black Rocks, including second summer and first summer individuals additional to those present a couple of days ago. Also seen in South Bay was a Great Skua which drowned a second calendar year Herring Gullbefore being chased off by other gulls.

Tuesday 6th July

Early this morning an Arctic Tern, 206 Common Scoter, 2 Manx Shearwaters and 7 Teal passed Marine Drive northwards, while a Sandwich Tern, 20 Common Scoter, 5 Manx Shearwaters, a Teal and 38 Shelduck went south. A Spotted Flycatcher was at the forest edge just above Cockrah Foot, Wrench Green this afternoon.

Monday 5th July

A Little Egret, 4 Gadwall with broods of 11 and 4 ducklings, 7 and 4 Tufted ducklings, and 2 adult and a juvenile Little Grebe were at Seamer Tip pool. A Mediterranean Gull was near the Chalet cafe in North Bay. An adult Mediterranean Gull, 2 Sandwich Terns and 72 Swifts flew south past Long Nab, while 17 Common Scoter and a single Teal flew north.

Sunday 4th July

15 Tufted Duck were at Burton Riggs this morning while the Mute Swan family have walked back to Taylor Way. A Peregrine was spotted enjoying a bird lunch on rocks near lamppost 46 on Marine Drive. At Jerry Noddle this morning there was a Honey Buzzard, a Goshawk, a Turtle Dove, a Buzzard and a Tree Pipit. 27 Tufted Duck were at Seamer Road Mere with 3 new broods of 1, 3 and 8, while the Coots have a further 2 broods of 4 newly hatched. A juvenile Buzzard was nearby with 2 adults. A Raven flew north-east over Crossgates in the early afternoon. 3 returning Mediterranean Gulls were seen on Black Rocks, a second summer bird and 2 adults, including the Polish ringed PNN5 individual. A flock of 10 Common Sandpiper were also on Black Rocks.

A Little Egret, 4 House Martins and 4 Oystercatchers were at Seamer Tip pool this morning, plus Gadwall broods of 11 and 4 and Tufted Duck broods of 7 and 1. At Sneaton High Moor there were 3 Whinchat, 7 Stonechat, 2 Tree Pipits and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Friday 2nd July

The Taylor Way Mute Swans have walked their 2 remaining cygnets to Burton Riggs; a Reed Warbler was singing at Taylor Way pool; and several families of Sedge Warblers were on the mounds near Seamer Tip pool, where large dragonflies were abundant.

Thursday 1st July

Today's big news is a Soft-plumaged Petrel that passed Long Nab about 2 miles out, heading north. Also passing were an adult Pomarine Skua (north), 3 Wigeon, 46 Teal, 430 Common Scoter, 34 Curlew, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits and 394 Puffins. At least one Oystercatcher chick was at Burton Riggs, 2 families (5 and 1) of Tufted Duck were at Seamer Tip pool, 8 Curlew were in the field south of the pool, and a Yellow Wagtail flew over Metes Lane in Seamer.

Wednesday 30th June

Highlights passing Long Nab this morning include a Wigeon, a Bar-tailed Godwit and 3 Great Skuas. A family party of Marsh Tits, a juvenile Dipper, a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch and Willow Warbler, were seen at Ellerburn, where a Chiffchaff, a Garden Warbler and a Blackcap were still singing.
