Monday 31st July

 The Little Egret was still at the Open Air Theatre. Potter Brompton Carr held 7 Garganey, 260 Greylag Geese, 4 Wigeon, 3 Shoveler, 2 Shelduck, juv Little Grebe, Greenshank, Redshank, 2 Green Sandpipers, Oystercatcher, 10 Little Egrets, and a juv Marsh Harrier. A Little Tern flew north at Long Nab, south past there were 3 Caspian Gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull (all juvs), and two Little Egrets. A juv Cuckoo was nearby at Rocks Lane. Lebberston Cliffs had two juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls feeding offshore, 2 Reed Warblers new in, and a juvenile Caspian Gull , 2 Little Egrets flying south. An Osprey was over Troutsdale early morning.

Sunday 30th July

 Good numbers of gulls feeding off Lebberston Cliff  this afternoon including 2 Caspian, and 3 Yellow-legged Gulls, all juveniles. A Marsh Harrier also flew south there. Also 2 Yellow-legged Gulls, 25 Whimbrel, 2 Great White Egrets south past Long Nab this morning. Seven Crossbills flew south over Hovingham Drive, Scarborough.

 The Little Egret was still around the Open Air Theatre. A Hobby was over Jugger Howe Moor. A Dipper on the beck at Scalby Mills, plus a Whimbrel south this evening there. 61 juvenile House Martins on wires at Wrench Green.  Three Ravens flew south over Lebberston Cliff, also a juvenile Caspian Gull offshore there. At Potter Brompton Carr (from Haybridge); Greenshank, 2 Common Sandipers, Green Sandpiper, 3 Golden Plovers flew east, Wigeon, Pintail, 8 Little Egrets, and 186 Greylag Geese. A Teal, Oystercatcher, Common Sandpiper on East Lake, NY Water Park. South past Long Nab were 2 Little Egrets, Whimbrel, 6 Arctic Terns, and a Mediterranean Gull flew north. Two Teal, Barn Owl Johnson's Marsh.  A family party of 5 Merlins at Jugger Howe Moor.

 A flock of c45 Whimbrel flew high south at Long Nab this eve. A Hobby attending 200+ House Martins over Middle Deepdale (Eastfield/Oliver's Mount). The Little Egret still at the Open Air Theatre. Up to 50 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Terns and 6 Turnstone at Scalby Mills. A Willow Tit near High Staindale, Dalby.

 A total of 17 Little Terns flew south past South Cliff this morning, also Blue Fulmar and Ruff flew south,   636 Common Scoters flew north. Long Nab also saw a Ruff south, plus a Blue Fulmar north.  A Barn Owl was at Johnson's Marsh. Three Common and 13 Sandwich Terns, plus a Ringed Plover at Scalby Mills. At Potter Brompton Carr; 2 Garganey, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Greenshank, cc Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 6 Little Egrets, and 142 Greylag Geese. Four Whimbrel flew west over town. A Blue Fulmar flew north at Long Nab, a Ruff and 8 Whimbrel past. A cc Marsh Harrier near Folkton Water Treatment this p.m. A juv Little Grebe with adults at Match Lake, NY Water Park.

 The first Caspian Gull (juvenile) of autumn flew north at Long Nab. Also north were a Wigeon, Teal, 255 Common Scoter, and Arctic Tern. A flock of eight Little Egrets flew south, a Whimbrel and also a Hobby high south over the car park there late morning. A Shelduck at Johnson's Marsh, and Little Egret again at the Open Air Theatre. Two Mandarins were at Harwood Dale Lake.

 A Short-eared Owl flew north from Filey towards South Bay this morning. At Potter Brompton Carr; 7 Garganey (family party), 3 Shoveler, 2 Greenshank, 2 Dunlin, single Green & Common Sandpipers, Snipe, 2 Oystercatchers, 6 Little Egrets, and 120 Greylag Geese. A Little Egret in North Bay (2nd day). North past Long Nab this evening; Little Gull, 45 Common Scoters, 3 Manx Shearwaters.

30 Greylag Geese, two Oystercatcher, one Ruff, three Greenshank, six Redshank, one Common Sandpiper, three Little Egret and a Marsh Harrier were at Potter Brompton Carr this morning. The highlight of an eventful sea watch at Long Nab this morning was a Balearic Shearwater passing north at 0946hrs. Other sightings north included one Velvet Scoter, a second calendar year Little Gull, two Arctic Skua, one Great Skua, one Whimbrel, 131 Manx Shearwater, one Puffin, 54 Sandwich Tern (1 S) and two Arctic Tern. an adult Mediterranean Gull flew south. Two adult Little Gulls flew north off Hundale Point this afternoon and 31 Oystercatchers flew high north off Marine Drive.

 At Potter Brompton Carr this morning; Two Avocet, three Greenshank, one Dunlin, one Green Sandpiper, one Common Sandpiper, two Oystercatcher, four Little Egret, one Barn Owl and a cream crowned Marsh Harrier. During a visibility restricted watch from Marine Drive this morning, 349 Common Scoter passed (325 N and 24 S) along with 20 Sandwich Terns and 16 Oystercatchers also north. An increase in flying juvenile Kittiwakes noted. At Long Nab this morning. 70 Common Scoter, three Manx Shearwater, two Sandwich Terns and one Arctic Skua ( 2 S) all flew north. 14 Sandwich Tern, four Turnstone, three Redshank, two Curlew and two Oystercatcher were at Scalby Mills.

 10 species of wader flew south past South Cliff this morning including 51 Redshank, 13 Sanderling, 13 Turnstone and eight Black-tailed Godwit. Two adult Little Gulls and two Arctic Skuas also flew south plus one Arctic Skua blogging. 421 Common Scoter flew north. A pair of Lesser Black-backed Gulls with a full grown youngster were on a factory roof at Hopper Hill Road and a Reed Warbler was singing at Taylor Way pool. 10 species of wader flew past Lebberston Cliffs including eight Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff.

 A quiet day overall. A single Common Crossbill flew north over South Cliff and two Whimbrel arrived in off the sea from the east. A juvenile Willow Warbler visited a Crossgates garden and 30+House Martins and five Swallows were noted over Woodlands Ravine. A juvenile Yellow-legged Gull flew north at Lebberston Cliff this morning and three Whimbrel flew south there.

 A Great Skua (N) and an Arctic Skua (S) flew past Long Nab this morning. Another Arctic Skua flew S past Hundale Point. A Kingfisher was at Brompton Ponds and six Willow Tits were noted at four locations in the  Dalby Nabgate and Sand Dale areas. Three Spotted Flycatchers were also noted. Two Greenshank, one Green Sandpiper, three Little Egret, two Common Buzzard, a Sparrowhawk and a Cormorant were at Potter Brompton Carr.

 Six returning Wigeon were at Potter Brompton this morning along with 12 Teal, six Black-tailed Godwit, two Wood Sandpiper, two Dunlin, two Common Sandpiper,  Green Sandpiper, six Greenshank and eight Little Egret. A Kingfisher was at Wrench Green and two were at the Predator Lake,  North Yorkshire Water Park, At the East Lake there was a Common Sandpiper, Redshank and Oystercatcher. A CORY'S SHEARWATER flew north at Long Nab at 1503hrs during an eventful sea watch. Also north there was a 2nd calendar year Little Gull, a 2nd calendar year Mediterranean Gull, a Great Skua (1S), nine Manx Shearwater, 46 Sandwich Tern (3S), 41 Black-headed Gull (19S) and 951 Gannet (321S). Four Common Tern flew south. A raptor fest over Crossgates involved single Peregrine, female Goshawk, Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

 A Turtle Dove was seen below Brompton this morning and two Little Egrets, two Mediterranean Gulls (ad + 2cy) and 32 Manx Shearwaters (6S) flew north past Long Nab. Two adult and three juvenile Stonechats were at Scalby Lodge Pond fields as well as a Common Buzzard, 12 Stock Doves and a pair of Reed Buntings. Seven Mandarin Duck, two Tufted Ducks, three Oystercatchers, (2 juveniles), a Grey Heron, one Common Snipe, a Great Spotted Woodpecker and approximately 20 Lapwings were at Harwood Dale Lake. Two adult and three young Shelduck were at Johnson's Marsh along with four Grey Heron, a single Greylag Goose, a Moorhen with one young and a pair of Reed Buntings. 30+ House Martins were over Woodlands Ravine area this evening.

 A Wood Sandpiper at Potter Brompton Carr, also Green Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Oystercatchers, and 3 Little Egrets. An Osprey flew west at Troutsdale at 13.35 hrs. Two Kingfishers and a Dipper at Wrench Green. Two pairs of Little Grebes at Brompton Ponds, both pairs with one chick. A pair of Coot with three small chicks at Johnson's Marsh.

 A 2cy Spoonbill flew south past Long Nab Bird Observatory at 08.05am. Also south were an impressive 3,060 Swifts, 2 Whimbrel, Arctic Skua, Hobby, and the first Yellow-legged Gull (juvenile) of the summer. A Ruff flew in from the east and continued north. Good numbers of Gannets were reported feeding along the coast.

 An adult Water Rail with two young chicks at Potter Brompton Carr was the news of the day! Also there were 4 Greenshank, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Common Sandpipers, 3 Snipe, Shoveler, juv Shelduck, and two Little Egrets. A Greenshank, 2 Dunlin and a Little Ringed Plover were at East Lake, North Yorkshire Water Park. Long Nab saw good numbers of Swifts moving south early morning, a total of 2,477 counted. Also past were 6 Sanderling, 3 Whimbrel, and an adult Mediterranean Gull. The singing Grasshopper Warbler was still just north of Crook Ness.

 An unexpected pelican sp. flew north over Long Nab Bird Observatory at 07.22 hrs. Unfortunately it was not noticed until it was flying away at distance. Hopefully it will be relocated and identified over the next few days somewhere. Other highlights past there included a flock of five Little Egrets, 6 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Knot, 2 Sanderling, and a Whimbrel. A singing Grasshopper Warbler was along the cliffs just north of Crook Ness. 30+ House Martins were feeding over Woodlands Cemetary this afternoon.

Potter Brompton Carr held 8 Little Egrets, 2 Marsh Harriers, 5 Greenshank, 3 Green Sandpipers, 2 Common Sandpipers, 74 Lapwing, 2 Dunlin,. Two Crossbills at Pennyhowe, Three Stonechats, Whinchat Lords Stones, Stony Marl Moor. A Common Tern at Scalby Mills this eve.

 An increase in waders at Potter Brompton Carr today; 10 Greenshank, 8 Green Sandpipers, Common Sandpiper, 6 Little Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwit, also 13 Teal (incl one with 3 well grown young), 8 Little Egrets. On East Lake at NY Water Park were 3 Little Ringed Plovers, 4 Oystercatchers, 4 Teal. a Pink-footed Goose at Burton Riggs. South at South Cliff were 2552 Swifts, Gadwall, 57 Redshank, 6 Whimbrel, 6 Knot, and 19 Dunlin. A Great Skua and Pochard flew north.

A juvenile Wheatear was near the Observatory at Long Nab, a Mediterranean Gull flew south. A Wheatear also flew west over Burniston. A Dipper in the beck at Ebberston. At East Lake, NY Water Park were 6 Little Ringed Plovers (4 chicks), 2 Redshank, Common Sandpiper, and a juvenile Yellow Wagtail.

An influx of waders to East Lake, North Yorkshire Water Park; 3 Green Sandpipers, 2 Common Sandpipers, Oystercatcher, and 5 Little Ringed Plovers (3 chicks). A Green Sandpiper, and 5 Teal Seamer tip pool. Two Sedge Warblers were at Scalby Lodge Pond. Highlights past Long Nab included 314 Common Scoters, Little Egret, Mediterranean Gull north. 191 Black-headed Gulls (74 north), 432 Swifts south.

 An adult Little Gull at the East Lake, North Yorkshire Water Park mid-afternoon. Also there 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls, 6 LRPs (4 juvs), Common Sandpiper, Shelduck, 14 Lbb Gulls. A male Goshawk, and a Mediterranean Gull SW over Crossgates. 600+ Swifts flew south at Long Nab, also 360 Herring Gulls, 4 Teal, 2 Whimbel, and 12 Curlews. Three Green Sandpipers at Northstile Pool.

 A Wood Sandpiper new in at Potter Brompton Carr, also Green Sandpiper, Greenshank, 2 Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit, Snipe, 2 LRP, 8 Teal, 9 Little Egrets, and the cc Marsh Harrier still. An amazing influx of Mediterranean Gulls at South Cliff, 36 in from the east, most heading NW. also 4 Little Egrets north, Whimbrel, 147 Sand Martins, 12 Crossbills south. A Sedge Warbler in cornelian Ravine. Two Mediterranean Gulls flew north past Long Nab, 146 Swifts south. The Grasshopper Warbler was still at Cromer Pond. 12 Mandarins, 6 Teal at Harwood Dale Lake. A Turtle Dove at nearby Mill Inn.

A good morning at South Cliff today, highlights were 4 Wigeon, 342 Common Scoter, 2 Little Egrets north. 87 Curlew in off and NW, 6 Arctic Terns past, and 9 Mediterranean Gulls in off/north. Also 5 Mediterranean Gulls on black Rocks. Lesser Redpoll Jugger Howe Moor. On East Lake (North Yorkshire Water Park) were 6 Little Ringed Plover (4 juvs), and 3 Common Sandpipers. A pair of Herons have nested at Johnson's Marsh (3 young raised). 14 Mandarin, 40 Lapwings, Oystercatcher + 2 well grown chicks Harwood Dale Lake.

 A single Black-tailed Godwit on the East Lake at North Yorkshire Water Park. A Tufted Duck brood (6 ducklings) at Seamer tip pool. Two Oystercatchers at Seamer Mead. Two Little Egrets over the Open Air Theatre at 9pm. Churring male Nightjars recorded: 8+ Langdale Forest, 5+ Broxa Forest, 4 Givendale, Dalby (+ 1 female). 3+ Woodcocks also Givendale.

 At Potter Brompton Carr; 7 Little Egrets, female Garganey (plus 6 ducklings), 7 Teal, Little Grebe, cc Marsh Harrier, Little Ringed Plover (juv), Common Sandpiper, 4 Dunlin (flew west), 3 Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Snipe (incl a fledged juv), Barn Owl. North Yorkshire Water Park had a flock of 11 Black-tailed Godwits, Little Egret, 2 Little Ringed Plovers (+ 2 young), 3 Oystercatchers, Yellow Wagtail. A drake Wigeon flew south past Long Nab, also 9 Manx Shearwaters past. Two Eiders and a Little Egret at Scalby Mills. Two Mandarin, 26 Lapwing Harwood Dale Lake, nearby a family party of Redstatrs (male + 2 juvs).

 The Osprey was again at North Yorkshire Water Park early morning, having roosted at one of the private lakes overnight. Also there were 5 drake Mandarins. Potter Brompton Carr held 4 Little Egrets, Little Grebe, Ringed Plover, and a "cream crown" Marsh Harrier. The leucistic Woodpigeon remains at Burniston, now 5+ years old. A Little Egret was at the mouth of Scalby Beck.

 A Grasshopper Warbler was singing at Long Nab, where 1,869 Swifts, 3 Redshank, and a Corn Bunting flew south. Nine Curlew flew north. A pair (one male) of Red-breasted Mergansers were at Scalby Mills, and a Dunlin was in nearby Jackson's Bay. An Osprey was at North Yorkshire Water Park mid-afternoon, also a Little Ringed Plover (+ 4 chicks), Oystercatcher, and 6 Lbb Gulls there. A Whimbrel flew south over Burniston. A pair of Long-eared Owls with three young found in Langdale Forest last month.
