Friday 30th November

At Wykeham South Lake this morning: 4 Red-crested Pochard, 12 Pochard, 1 Shoveler, 8 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Scaup, 2 Little Grebes, 23 Wigeon, 6 Teal, 1 Goosander, 16 Tufted Duck and a male Pintail. A Great White Egret was present at Seamer Tip pool, and a first year Kittiwake was seen in the South Bay. 8 Waxwings were spotted in Eastfield round midday, but were not seen again. At Potter Brompton Carr there were 155 Wigeon, 110 Teal, 197 Greylag Geese, 8 Snipe and 20 Yellowhammers.There were 4 Common Scoter in North Bay, 12 Herons on Johnson's Marsh, and a Chiffchaff at Seamer Road Mere.

Thursday 29th November

Early morning Wykeham South Lake had 3 male and 1 female Red-crested Pochard, plus a Goosander, 72 Wigeon, 28 Gadwall, 5 Goldeneye, 26 Tufted Duck, a Great White Egret and 300+Lapwings. These were joined later by a single Whooper Swan. 4 Bewick Swans were seen flying east over Taylor Way. There were 5 Shovelers on Seamer Tip Pool, while at Burton Riggs there were 2 Goldeneye, 2 Wigeon, 15 Tufted Duck and a Great Crested Grebe.

Wednesday 28th November

On a wet and windy morning a drake Scaup and a drake Goosander were present at Wykeham South Lake, together with a similar community of ducks as in recent days. A Great White Egret remains at Burton Riggs, plus Chiffchaff, Shoveler and Little Grebe. A Green Sandpiper and 26 Teal flew over Seamer Tip. Potter Brompton Carr hosted 130 Wigeon, 62 Teal, 30 Mallard, a Shelduck, a female Peregrine, 25 Fieldfares and 40 Linnets. 4 Snipe were seen on the hillside between Forge Valley and Wrench Green. At 01:00 last night several Redwings were heard flying over Westwood Court.

Tuesday 27th November

There has been no further sighting of yesterday's Hume's Leaf Warbler at Seamer Road Mere. A drake Goosander and a drake Goldeneye remain there, plus a first winter Mediterranean Gull, and the Chiffchaff count has now risen to 6. Yesterday's 2 Great White Egrets also remain in the area, one at Burton Riggs and the other at Wykeham South Lake. 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls were also seen at Scalby Mills. A male Stonechat was spotted on the rock armour opposite the old Albert cafe site, Marine Drive. In Dalby Forest: 3 Nuthatches and 3 Marsh Tits were seen in the Low Dalby area, 20 Crossbills and 2 Willow Tits in Flax Dale, a Willow Tit at Sutherbruff Rigg, and 2 Willow Tits at Sneverdale. A Dunlin flew east over Seamer Tip Pool.

Monday 26th November

A Waxwing was seen in Halfords car park early morning but has not been spotted since. Highlights at Seamer Road Mere included 7 Little Grebe, Teal, 44 Tufted Duck, 4 Goldeneye, a Blackcap, at least 4 Chiffchaffs a drake Goosander and a Kingfisher. In addition, a Hume's Warbler was heard calling several times but was not seen. At Wykeham South Lake this morning a Peregrine was seen hunting Fieldfares. There also, were 150 Lapwings, 43+ Gadwall, 26 Wigeon, 6 Pochard, 2 Shoveler, 6 Goldeneye, 26 Tufted Duck and a Buzzard. In the afternoon 4 White-fronted Geese flew overhead southwards, while a Great White Egret, a drake Scaup, a Green Sandpiper, 3 Egyptian Geese and a Dunlin were present. The Lapwing count had risen to 300. In the Long Nab area this morning there were a White-fronted Goose, a Tundra Bean Goose and a Bark-bellied Brent Goose feeding in fields. 2 Great Northern Divers and 3 Little Gulls flew past Long Nab. In the Crosscliffe area of Dalby Forest 51 Common Crossbills were spotted, plus 3 Willow Tits and 5 Jays. An adult and 3 juvenile Whooper Swans were seen on the carrs at Lingholm Court estate, and another 6 adults and 5 juveniles in the field next to this. 72 Teal were on Johnson's Marsh and a Great White Egret flew over Burniston towards there.

Highlights from Long Nab today included 5 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 14 Eiders, 9 Shags, 2 Great Northern Divers and 2 Little Gulls. 65 Teal were present at Johnson's Marsh while Wykeham South Lake had a Great White Egret, a drake Scaup, 41 Gadwall, 3 Shoveler, 6 Goldeneye, 5 Pochard, 1 Goosander, 8 Great Crested Grebes and 3 Little Grebes. A Raven was seen flying north this afternoon over Harwood Dale Road inland from Burniston. Great White Egrets were also seen today at both Seamer Road Mere and Throxenby Mere. 2 or more in the area now.

Great Egret, drake Scaup, 85 Lapwings flew east plus 135 Pink-footed Geese also east at Wykeham South Lake. Three Ringed Plovers at Scalby Mills, 6 Purple Sandpipers North Bay and 2 Goldeneye at Seamer Road Mere. Eight Dark-bellied Brent Geese flew south at Cornelian Bay, 2 Grey Plover present there. 33 Purple Sandpipers at the east pier roost at high tide plus a Great Crested Grebe still in the harbour. A Red-throated Diver and 3 Shags in South Bay. Water Rail at the Open Air Theatre viewed from the footpath over the railway bridge.

Friday 23rd November

The drake Velvet Scoter was again at Wykeham South Lake early afternoon, also there a drake Scaup, 6 Pochard, 7 Goldeneye, a Shelduck, 35 Gadwall, 3 Shoveler. The Great Egret was seen at Burton Riggs and Seamer Mead this morning. Also a Little Egret at the latter site. In the Wilton Heights area; a male Goshawk, 2 Common Buzzards, a mixed flock of 100 finches (mostly Chaffinches) including a few Brambling and Yellowhammers. 38 Pink-footed Geese flew south there.

Thursday 22nd November

A "redhead" Smew was briefly at Wykeham South Lake before leaving east. The Great Egret was seen flying over Crossgates mid morning and later at Burton Riggs early afternoon, also there 3 Goosanders and a Kingfisher. Four Dark-bellied Brent Geese were at Yons Nab close to the seal colony south of Cayton Bay. A juvenile Whooper Swan was at Harwood Dale Lake , the herd of 11 were still grazing at Flotmanby Carr. Highlights past Long Nab included 7 Eider, 3 Little Gulls, an Arctic and 3 Great Skuas, also 2 Fieldfare there. At Johnson's Marsh there were 46 Teal and 4 Wigeon.

I wonder if the owner of this bin below realises that they are contributing to the continuing conflict between humans and gulls in Scarborough?

Wednesday 21st November

Today started badly for a Guillemot in the harbour which was dispatched by a Great Black-backed Gull. Also in the harbour was a Great-crested Grebe. Wykeham South Lake hosted a drake Velvet Scoter, 6 Goldeneye and 420+ Greylag Geese. 30+ Fieldfare were spotted near Ruston Carr bridge, and 11 Whooper Swans remained in a stubble field at the west end of Flotmanby Carrs. At Burton Riggs  there were 3 Goosander, 2 Goldeneye, a Kingfisher and a Woodcock, while at Seamer Road mere there were a male and a female Goldeneye plus a male Goosander. A Little Egret was seen near Thornton Dale.

Tuesday 20th November

Not a lot of news in today. 33 Gadwall, 3 Shoveler, 9 Pochard, 19 Goldeneye and 63 Wigeon were reported at Wykeham South Lake. 24 Gadwall were also present at Seamer Tip pool, and 3 Goosander (2 male, 1 female) and a male Pintail at Burton Riggs. A flock of 70+ Fieldfare together with about 10 Redwing were feeding in the Spiker's Hill farm area, plus 9 Yellowhammers.

Monday 19th November

The highlights today passing Long Nab were 8 Scaup, 2 Pintail, 3 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Goldeneye, 21 Eider, a Manx Shearwater, 2 Bonxie and 8 Little Gulls, while a Snow Bunting remained in the area. A female Snow Bunting was also in the Cromer Point area, and 108 Wigeon and a female Pintail were at Scalby Mills. A female Mandarin and a Chiffchaff were spotted at Peasholm Park and 6 Goldeneye at Burton Riggs. 4 Goosanders were seen flying upstream along Scalby Beck.

A slightly quieter day today. The highlights passing Long Nab this morning were 2 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and 2 more Brent Geese of uncertain species, a Velvet Scoter, 57 Eiders, a Red-breasted Merganser, 4 Goosanders, 2 Great Northern Divers and 13 Little Gulls. A Whimbrel and a Snow Bunting remained in the area. There were also 9 Little Gulls feeding in Cornelian Bay. A Blackcap was seen in Falsgrave Park and a Shelduck on Harwood Dale Lake.

Saturday 17th November

Wow, lots happening today! Early morning at Long Nab a Snow Bunting flew south and several Redwings and Fieldfares arrived from the east. Other highlights through the day from there were 41 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, a Long-tailed Duck, 26 Eiders, 59 Red-throated Divers, 1 Great Northern Diver, a Manx Shearwater, 14 Little Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull. A Whimbrel remained feeding in the fields, and a Lapland Bunting was feeding on the Cleveland Way 50m south of the observation hut. Away from Long Nab, 3 Goosander were seen going south and a Short-eared Owl was moving south along the cliffs above Marine Drive. A Great White Egret was spotted this morning on the pond on Stone Quarry Road, Burniston, then later flying over Cloughton. A Green Sandpiper flew west over the A64/River Hertford intersection. 54 Teal flew east over Selley Bridge Farm, where there were also 150+ Golden Plover, a Barn Owl and a Water Rail. A Water Rail was also seen at the south end of Scarborough Mere, along with 3 Goldeneye. Flotmanby Carrs had 11 Whooper Swans and Burton Riggs had 2 Barnacle Geese. This afternoon there were 41 Turnstone and 20 Purple Sandpipers roosting in the harbour, plus 2 more of the latter in North Bay. Scalby Mills hosted a count of 105 Wigeon, 450 Herring Gulls, 35 Great Black-backed Gulls, 60 Black-headed Gulls and a Mediterranean Gull. Phew!

Friday 16th November

A busy day, beginning with a report of about 100 Redwing and 150 Lapwing flying over Seamer, and 50+ Fieldfare and 60+ Redwing flying south along the valley near Wrench Green. Also near Wrench Green at least 60 Siskin, 3 Treecreepers, 2 Marsh Tits, 4 Goldcrests and 2 Mistle Thrushes. The Great White Egret still remains at Wykeham South Lake, along with 32 Gadwall, 36 Teal, 24 Wigeon, 31 Tufted Duck and 6 Goldeneye. A Whooper Swan was reported to be at Burton Riggs, and 3 more Whooper Swans were at Potter Brompton Carr, together with 11 Wigeon and 60+ Teal. A Merlin was seen at Thornton Carrs, a Kingfisher on Thornton Beck, and a Swift (species uncertain) was seen heading south over North Cliff golf course. There were 45 Crossbills, 34 Siskins, 2 Willow Tits, 1 Marsh Tit, 1 Jay, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers and 2 Common Buzzards seen at Sand Dale in Dalby forest.

Thursday 15th November

The highlights at Long Nab this morning were a Snow Bunting and a Swallow flying south, plus a Corn Bunting in the stubble field north of the observatory. The Great White Egret remains at Wykeham South Lake along with 56 Wigeon and 6 Pochard. 250 Lapwing, 140 Golden Plover, 3 Green Sandpipers and a Buzzard were seen at Thornton Carrs this afternoon. And lastly (oh yippee!), news just in of 10 Waxwings seen earlier this afternoon in tall trees in Foresters Court, Burniston Road barracks estate.

This morning's highlights seen passing Long Nab were a Merlin, a Great Crested Grebe, 5 Little Gulls and 1 Mediterranean Gull, plus a Whimbrel present in the field by Crook Ness. Wykeham South Lake hosted 420 Greylag Geese, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 7 Goldeneye, 12 Gadwall, 13 Tufted Ducks, 15 Wigeon, 1 Great White Egret, 2 Pochard and 53 Coot. In addition, 103 Pink-footed Geese flew over heading west. Over 150 Curlew were reported to be spread across 3 fields above Redcliff.

Highlights from Long Nab today included 5 Tundra Bean Geese flying in off the sea before continuing north-west, and a distant Swift (species uncertain) flying north. There were 6 Goldeneye and a juvenile Whooper Swan at Wykeham South Lake, plus small flocks of Fieldfares moving through. 165 Pink-footed Geese were counted at Ravenscar, flying south, and 40 also flying south over Westwood Court. 2 Chiffchaffs, 6 Pochard and 2 Goldeneye were spotted at Burton Riggs.

The highlights today at Long Nab were a Pallid Swift that circled Crook Ness before flying north along the cliffs, a male Snow Bunting which flew south, a Whimbrel in the fields between Fields Farm and the ringing plantation, a Little Gull flying south and 2 Blackcaps at Crook Ness. A Grey Plover was seen in Cornelian Bay together with 5 Red-throated Divers and 8 Curlew, plus a further 17 Curlew foraging in the field above the bay. There were 100+ Canada Geese at Burton Riggs, plus 8 Greylags, 12 Mallard and 10 Teal. A Mealy Redpoll was spotted at Roger Trod.

Sunday 11th November

Highlights from Long Nab this morning included a Common/Pallid Swift, 3 Velvet Scoters, 41 Red-throated Divers, 2 Great Northern Divers, a Little Gull and a Crossbill, all flying south. There were 3 Teal, 45 Tufted Duck, 2 Goldeneye, 3 Little Grebes, 2 Chiffchaffs and 2 Bramblings at Seamer Road Mere. In Cornelian Bay there was a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Whooper Swan, and briefly a Long-tailed Duck that flew off to the south. Scalby Mills hosted 95 Wigeon, a female Shoveler and an adult Mediterranean Gull, while 3000+ Starlings were reported to be roosting at Selley Bridge Lake, Low Marishes. Finally, a Swallow was spotted at Ravenscar.

Long Nab was fairly quiet this morning other than a Great Northern Diver and 98 Pink-footed Geese in 3 flocks, all flying south. 4 Goldcrests were seen at Crook Ness. A Merlin was spotted near Silpho and a Snow Bunting  at Ravenscar. At dusk 16 Purple Sandpipers and a Dunlin were roosting in the harbour, and 400 Starlings in the Old Town.

Friday 9th November

The Great White Egret remained at Wykeham South Lake today, together with 21 Gadwall, 5 Goldeneye, 17 Wigeon, 4 Little Grebes and 6 Great Crested Grebes, plus 4 Egyptian Geese in the fields beside the approach road. There were 57 Teal on Johnson's Marsh, while Seamer Road Mere had 3 Little Grebes, a Teal, a Goldeneye, 47 Tufted Duck, a Water Rail and 2 Chiffchaffs. A Chiffchaff was also present at Westwood Court. 10 Curlew flew over Crossgates this afternoon. There were 3 Pochard and 2 Goldeneye at Burton Riggs, and 17 Gadwall at Seamer Tip Pool.

The Great White Egret remained at Wykeham South Lake today, along with 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, a Green Sandpiper, 7 Goldeneye and 2 Mistle Thrushes. There were 37 Teal and 2 Wigeon on Johnson's Marsh, and 2 Great Crested Grebes in the harbour. A flock of 18 Curlew plus 25 Lapwing flew east over Crossgates this afternoon, and the Black Redstart remains at the council depot on Dean Road.

Another fairly quiet day at Long Nab. A ringtail Hen Harrier was seen over Fylingdales Moor early this morning, and 4 Waxwings flew west over the casino.The Great White Egret remains at Wykeham South Lake along with 56 Coot, 4 Pochard, 12 Gadwall, 5 Goldeneye and 43 Wigeon. In Dalby Forest there were 3 Willow Tits, a Woodcock, a Buzzard, and 12 Crossbills at Haw Dale, and 2 Willow Tits and 8 Bullfinches at Stonygate Moor. A Black Redstart was seen in the Corporation yard on Dean Road.

Tuesday 6th November

Very little passing at Long Nab this morning. The Great White Egret was still present at Wykeham South Lake, along with a Long-tailed Duck, while a Great White Egret was also seen near Burniston Garden Centre. 2 Barnacle Geese were among a group of Canada Geese in a field to the east of Seamer Tip pool, while on the the pool were 2 pairs of Pochard. A Siberian Chiffchaff was present among a large flock of tits on the north side of Castle Hill, together with 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 male Blackcaps and 2 Goldcrests. On the south side there was a Brambling. A Goldeneye, a Shoveler, 2 Pochard, 2 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall and 20 Tufted Ducks were reported at Burton Riggs, and a Water Rail at Brompton Ponds.

Early morning a Merlin flew over Cliff Top House near Long Nab. A Short-eared Owl flew in off the sea by Scalby Lodge Pond. 126 Wigeon were present at Scalby Mills and a Velvet Scoter flew past there also.  A  Great White Egret, 21 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 11 Goldeneye, 23 Teal, 15 Wigeon and 7 Pochard were present at Wykeham South Lake, while 2 juvenile Whooper Swans passed south. In the Dixon's/Givendale area of Dalby Forest 23 Crossbills were spotted, plus 2 Willow Tits, 3 Lesser Redpolls, a Woodcock and 4 Jays. A flock of 60+ Siskin were feeding by the river in Wrench Green, along with a Willow Tit, 3 Marsh Tits, 2 Treecreepers, 9+ Redwings and a Dipper.

An exciting start to a busy day with a Hen Harrier (ringtail) flying south along the cliffs at Long Nab. Also in this area an Eider and a Shoveler flew south, and a Whimbrel was feeding with Curlews in the field between Crook Ness and Long Nab. 14 Ringed Plover were present in Jackson's Bay and a drake Eider was seen flying south past Marine Drive. There were 15 Purple Sandpipers and 16 Turnstones on the outer harbour wall.16 Pochard were spotted flying south east over Crossgates and a Firecrest showed up in a garden in Hutton Buscel. At Sand Dale in Dalby Forest there were 6 Willow Tits, 2 Marsh Tits, 10 Bullfinches, 4 Crossbills, 3 Buzzards and 2 Jays. 26 Tufted Duck, 7 Cormorants, 2 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 2 Teal, 2 Goldeneye, 2 Little Grebes, a Kingfisher and a Water Rail were seen at Seamer Road Mere this afternoon.

Relatively little reported today (following high hopes that a White-tailed Eagle roosting at the north end of Danes Dyke might fly northwards along the coast today).  A sub-adult Pomarine Skua went north past Long Nab. A Snow Bunting was present in the second field north of Long Nab, and 13 Curlews were in the field near Crook Ness. Johnson's Marsh had 15 Grey Herons and 22 Teal this afternoon.

Today's big excitement at Long Nab was a Rough-legged Buzzard circling out at sea. Other highlights there were 75 Little Gulls and 2 Little Auks all heading north, and 2 Snow Buntings on the Cleveland Way footpath south of the observation hut. Elsewhere there were 30 Golden Plover at Folkton Carr, a Water Rail at Seamer Tip, 5 Mediterranean Gulls at Holbeck, and an Eider remains at Scalby Mills together with 3 Purple Sandpipers. Wykeham South Lake had 5 Goldeneye, 4 Little Grebes, 17 Gadwall, and now over 600 Greylags! A Green Sandpiper flew over North Lane and 14 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east over Starr Carr. In the late afternoon a Brambling, a Grey Wagtail, a Kingfisher, a Marsh Tit, 6 Nuthatches and good numbers of Siskin and Redwing were reported from Ellerburn.

A quiet morning's sea watch from Long Nab today with the main highlight being 27+Rock Pipits. 6 Whooper Swans were seen passing over to the east of Pickering early morning. In the afternoon 2 Goldeneye and 12 Tufted Ducks were reported from Burton Riggs, a Water Rail at Seamer Road Mere, and an Eider at Scalby Mills. 7 Goldeneye were on Wykeham South Lake, with 4 Egyptian Geese and 260 Greylags on the approach road. A Goshawk, a Buzzard, a Stonechat and 2 Crossbills were seen at May Moss, and about 50 Redpolls heard there. Another 3 Stonechats, 2 Crossbills and a Redpoll were seen in the Langdale Forest. A mixed flock of 30+ Siskins and Redpolls were seen on a late afternoon ramble in the Wykeham Forest, plus 85+Fieldfares just south of here on Spiker's Hill farm fields.
