Tuesday 30th June

Crossbills and Siskins are on the move still: 118 Crossbills flew south plus 5 north and 114 Siskins south at Ravenscar by 8am; 4 Siskins and 2 Crossbills were seen heading south over Heron Lane; and 16 Siskins and a Crossbill headed south-west over Newgate Brow this afternoon. 5 Common Sandpipers were at Wykeham South Lake and 24 Tufted Duck were at East Lake, while 22 Siskins flew over south-west. 2 Little Egrets were spotted flying west over Cayton Bay, while at Long Nab 70 Common Scoter, 2 Curlews, a second-winter Mediterranean Gull and a Common Tern flew past southwards and an adult Mediterranean Gull flew north. At Seamer Road Mere there were 3 Common Sandpipers, and 3 juvenile Grey Wagtails, while the 2 broods of Tufted Duck remain, though the brood of 10 is now down to 4 (plus the single duckling). 12 Tufted Duck were also on Cargate Reservoir, and a singing Whinchat was at Cargate Nab.

Monday 29th June

10 Mandarin Ducks and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull were at Harwood Dale Lake this morning, while highlights passing Long Nab were a Little Egret, a first summer Mediterranean Gull, a Dunlin and 5 Curlews. 326 Puffins, a Red-throated Diver, a Bar-tailed Godwit and 463 Swifts flew south at South Cliff, while in South Bay there were 3 Mediterranean Gulls - a first summer bird and 2 adults including the Polish-ringed individual PNN5. 21 Curlew, 23 Oystercatchers and a Redshank were in the roost there. A mixed flock (50-60) of Swallows, House Martins and Swifts were over the rugby field at Oliver's Mount. Early evening a pair of Sandwich Terns were feeding in Cayton Bay.

Again today, thousands of Swifts on the move - 9258 through South Cliff in a bit over 6 hours this morning, another 679 this afternoon, and 9186 counted passing Long Nab. Also passing South Cliff this morning were a first summer Hobby plus 80 Siskins and 43 Crossbills, while an adult Hobby went through this afternoon. A first summer Mediterranean Gull was around Holbeck. A new family of Tufted Duck were at Seamer Tip pool - a female with 5 ducklings. A Black-tailed Godwit was at Johnson's Marsh for a couple of hours in the early afternoon before heading off south-east, while 2 more flew past Long Nab, as did 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Golden Plover and a Hobby. Green Sandpipers were seen at both Northstile pool and Wykeham Lakes, and a Red Kite flew west at the latter site. 2 Turtle Doves were seen at Harwood Dale, and at Harwood Dale Lake there were 10 Mandarins, 5 Oystercatchers, a Heron and 7 Greylags. At Scalby Mills 4 Kittiwakes, a Great Black-backed Gull and 5 Black-headed Gulls were among the Herring Gulls.

A quieter morning at Ravenscar with just 138 Crossbills and 229 Siskins moving south today. 3 Sedge Warblers were in the reeds at the north end of Cayton Bay, while large numbers of  Swifts (110 in 15 minutes) were seen coming in south of Crook Ness. Highlights heading south through South Cliff included 4 Little Egrets, a Hobby, 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 777 Swifts (plus 16 north), 119 Siskins and 58 Crossbills. 18 Curlew were in the roost there and 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls were back in South Bay off Holbeck. At Seamer Road Mere 3 juvenile Grey Wagtails were feeding on some of the thousands of toadlets there, while 13 adult Tufted Duck were present with 2 broods, one with a single young and one with 10. 14 Black-headed Gulls, including a juvenile, were at Scalby Mills/Jackson's Bay, and 5 Black-headed Gulls flew high east along Valley Road this evening.

A juvenile Little Grebe was at Seamer Tip pool this morning, and an Osprey was spotted over Wykeham Lakes. The southward movement of Swifts, Siskins and Crossbills continues: at Ravenscar 464 Swifts, 441 Crossbills, 1525 Siskins and 3 Grey Wagtails flew south plus 10 Crossbills north, while passing South Cliff there were 1126 Swifts, 1069 Siskins, 862 Crossbills, 4 Little Egrets, 6 Whimbrel and 11 Curlew (plus one Curlew north). A Hobby was seen circling south over Crossgates this afternoon. This evening a Great Egret flew west over Dean Road, and another 15 Crossbills plus 15 Black-headed Gulls flew south over South Cliff.

Another day with Swifts, Siskins and Crossbills on the move: at South Cliff this morning 889 Swifts, 1223 Crossbills and 1486 Siskins flew south (plus 6 Siskins north), while at Ravenscar 278 Swifts, 2070 Siskins, 536 Crossbills, 3 Curlew and a Lesser Redpoll flew south. 31 Teal and 9 Herons were seen at Johnson's Marsh, and a Little Egret was in Burniston this afternoon. 2 eclipse plumage drake Eiders were spotted inshore off Long Nab.

A male Sparrowhawk was in a garden on Yedmamdale Road this morning, and a Hobby was seen being pursued over Crossgates by a dozen Swifts. 483 Crossbills and 1570 Siskins flew south past Ravenscar, while 9 Curlew, 1532 Swifts, 746 Siskins and 675 Crossbills flew south past South Cliff. A Quail was heard calling in the field behind the Long Nab observatory, and at Johnson's Marsh there were 2 Little Egrets and 2 Shelduck. A BBS survey at May Moss recorded breeding Redstart, Whinchat and Stonechat, plus good numbers of Meadow Pipits. A Buzzard was at May Beck. Highlights from a 1km square survey in the Newclose Rigg area of Dalby Forest included 5 Turtle Doves, a Willow Tit, Tree Pipits and 60 Crossbills flying over in small groups, plus more active in the forest. A survey at Troutsdale Moor revealed 2 Willow Tits, a Marsh Tit, 3 Jays and over 60 Crossbills. A Red Kite was seen being mobbed by 2 Sparrowhawks over Plaxton Court this afternoon, and 7 Common Scoter were seen heading north off Marine Drive this evening.

85 Crossbills, 71 Siskins, a Lesser Redpoll and a Cuckoo flew south past Ravenscar early this morning, while highlights passing South Cliff included 1286 Swifts, 13 Sand Martins, 327 Crossbills and 198 Siskins. A Whimbrel and a Redshank were on Black Rocks, a Cuckoo was at Scalby Lodge pond, and 2 Buzzards flew over Filey Road/Sea Cliff Road. 15 Crossbills flew over Whin Bank and 2 over Peasholm. At Long Nab a first summer Mediterranean Gull flew north, and 4 Curlew and 403 Swifts flew south. A Common Sandpiper was seen at Wykeham South Lake, and a Little Egret was near the new workings. Sightings from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint include a pale male Honey Buzzard, a cream crowned Marsh Harrier and a Hobby. 2 fledged Tawny Owls were spotted in East Ayton.

A Marsh Tit, a Garden Warbler and a family of 2 adult Mute Swans with 3 cygnets were seen at Burton Riggs this morning, presumed to be the swan family that had been at Taylor Way pool, but which are no longer there. Highlights seen passing South Cliff include: 122 Swifts north and 62 south, 125 Siskins south and 7 north, and 29 Crossbills south. A Whimbrel was on Black Rocks where there were 2 recently-fledged young Kestrels. 2 Spotted Flycatchers were seen this afternoon between Wrench Green and Northstile House.

Sunday 21st June

A Hobby was seen flying north at Long Nab this morning, then half an hour later flying south. Also passing Long Nab south were 2 Curlew, 845 Swifts and 7 Siskins; also 280 Common Scoter, 175 of which flew north. 5 Turtle Doves were at Burniston, and one at the Mill Inn. A Hobby flew south at Cornelian Bay, where there was a drake Common Scoter, 2 Curlew and 5 adult Black-headed Gulls. A single Crossbill flew west over Falsgrave Park, and a Curlew flew over the old prison, in the area of which a female Peregrine was seen hunting. At Cromer Point a Cuckoo was seen flying south, as were 3 Black-headed Gulls and a steady trickle of Swifts (288 counted through the afternoon). A Little Egret and 2 Black-headed Gulls were on the tideline in Burniston Bay and a Common Gull was at Scalby Mills. A Hobby was spotted hunting among Swifts this evening over the Peasholm area.

A Red Kite was just south of Ravenscar early this morning, and one flew south over Cayton Low Road later in the morning. Highlights from South Cliff include 24 Crossbills, 31 Siskins and 104 Swifts flying south, plus 1 Crossbill, and 18 Swifts flying north. 639 Swifts and 2 Siskins were also seen heading south past Long Nab. 5 Crossbills flew south over Whin Bank early morning, and 26 more flew over at 12:30. At Johnson's Marsh there were 12 Herons, 2 Teal, 2 Shelduck and 20+ House Martins, while 2 Kestrels, a Buzzard and a Greylag flew over south. A Hobby flew east, low over Heron Lane this afternoon, and another was seen flying over Woodall Avenue. A Cuckoo was spotted on Jugger Howe Moor. A Green Woodpecker and 2 Marsh Tits were at Wilton Heights this evening.

11 Black-headed Gulls, a Barn Owl and 3 Lapwing chicks were seen in a field to the south-west of Seamer Tip this morning. Highlights from South Cliff included 51 Swifts, a Jay, a Nuthatch, 23 Siskins, a Lesser Redpoll and 44 Crossbills flying south, plus 5 Curlew and 446 Starlings flying north. This afternoon 4 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh, and 5 drake Teal were at Seamer Tip pool. A Hobby flew over Crossgates towards the coast, and 4 Spoonbills were seen from Long Nab flying south, and then were seen again from town, but did not pass Knipe Point or Cayton Bay. A second brood of Tree Sparrows were chirping in a nest box in Scalby.

A male Siskin was on a feeder at Heron Lane this morning. In Wrench Green a Spotted Flycatcher was at Cockrah Foot and a Green Sandpiper was on the pool below Northstile House. A Hobby flew over Long Nab, and a female Mandarin was at Johnson's Marsh.

Wednesday 17th June

At Wykeham Lakes there was a Redshank as well as 2 Egyptian Geese on South Lake and 6 Tufted Duck on East Lake this morning. This afternoon a male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was seen between South Lake and the fishing lake. 2 Little Egrets were with Herons at Johnson's Marsh, a Redshank and a Curlew flew north at Long Nab, and 2 Red Kites were spotted over Wykeham.

Tuesday 16th June

Sadly there was no sign of the Marsh Warbler today at Crook Ness. A pair of Tufted Ducks were at Seamer Tip pool with 2 ducklings, and 5 Common Terns were seen at Wykeham South Lake. At Long Nab a Dunlin flew north and a Siskin was present at the ringing plantation. A Turtle Dove was seen in the Three Tremblers area of Wykeham Forest where there were also Nightjar and Woodcock.

A rather elusive Marsh Warbler was singing at Crook Ness from early morning into the early afternoon, and a Corn Bunting was singing on Dickie Harper's Lane. A probable female Marsh Harrier was spotted over South Cliff bowls club, and a Whimbrel flew south past Long Nab. A Redshank flew south over South Bay, and 70 Common Scoter were seen heading north past Marine Drive. A Quail was singing in a BBS square in the Ganton/Willerby area, where there were also a pair of Yellowhammers with 4 fledged young, breeding Yellow Wagtails, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and over 550 Rooks, 60 Carrion Crows and 40 Jackdaws. 846 Kittiwake nests were counted in town (up from last year's count of 769) - the main sites being Spa Bridge, the Grand Hotel, the Town Hall, and the Travelodge. 20 Swifts were seen over Staxton this evening.

A Green Sandpiper, 2 Shelduck and 2 Wigeon were present at Johnson's Marsh this morning. At Wykeham Lakes a drake Wigeon was at East Lake, 2 Egyptian Geese were at South Lake, and from Long Causeway Road 2 Willow Tits, 2 Garden Warblers and a Blackcap were found. 12 Sedge Warblers were seen, and a Reed Warbler was singing, at New Dike, Seamer Tip. 36 Common Scoter, 3 Red-throated Divers and 10 Oystercatchers flew past Long Nab, where 2 Siskins were present at the ringing station. There was a possible sighting of a Ring-necked Duck at Seamer Tip pool; 2 Lesser Whitethroats and a Willow Warbler were at Burton Riggs; and at Seamer Road Mere there were a Coot, the first returning Black-headed Gull, and 2 juvenile Tufted Duck are still surviving there. Today's annual count on Castle Headland showed 1772 'apparently occupied' Kittiwake nests and 12 'apparently occupied' Fulmar nest sites - almost identical counts to last year's. 4 Turtle Doves were present in Burniston this evening.

Today's big excitement was a male Golden Oriole which was initially seen early in the morning in Hutton Buscel churchyard, then later in the morning at Wykeham Lakes, where it was seen and heard several times before disappearing. Also seen at the lakes were 10 Crossbills flying east, a Redshank, 2 Egyptian Geese and a Hobby. A Hobby had also been seen earlier flying north over Burton Riggs, where there were an adult and a second calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull. A female Cuckoo was spotted by Long Lane railway crossing. 4 Sandwich Terns and 3 Puffins flew north past Marine Drive, while a Willow Warbler and a Siskin were the only migrants seen on Castle Hill, together with a Painted Lady and 2 Silver Ys. A Turtle Dove was opposite the Mill Inn in Harwood Dale, and another was singing at Staintondale. 2 Peregrines were seen flying north at cliff top level just north of Long Nab, one of them carrying a pigeon. 9 Eiders also flew north at Long Nab and 7 Curlews flew south. A Green Sandpiper turned up at Johnson's Marsh, where there are still 2 Wigeon. A flock of 16 Long-tailed Tits were at Beast Cliff, Ravenscar.

Friday 12th June

Flying north past Marine Drive early this morning were 48 Manx Shearwaters, 82 Puffins, an Arctic Tern, 2 Sandwich Terns and 8 Common Scoter, while heading south were 4 Puffins, 24 Sandwich Terns, 7 Teal and an Oystercatcher. Later in the morning a Curlew, 26 Common Scoter, a Red-throated Diver, 7 Manx Shearwaters, 46 Fulmars, 152 Gannets and 96 auks flew past northwards. At Long Nab 89 Manx Shearwaters, 28 Common Scoter, 5 Curlews and 114 Puffins were seen passing northwards while 26 Common Scoter and 9 Puffins headed south. There was a drake Wigeon at Wykeham East Lake and another at Johnson's Marsh. A party of 14 Long-tailed Tits were in Dean Road cemetery, and in Burniston there were 3 Turtle Doves.

At Wykeham Lakes this morning there were 2 Egyptian Geese, a pair of Shoveler, a drake Pochard and a drake Tufted Duck. A family of Great Spotted Woodpeckers - male, female and 2 juveniles - were in a garden backing onto Northcliff Golf Course. A cream crowned Marsh Harrier flew north-west over Crossgates this afternoon. Passing Long Nab northwards were: 9 Barnacle Geese, 857 Common Scoter, 8 Eiders, a female Red-breasted Merganser, a Ringed Plover, a Curlew and a Great Skua. In the Bridestones area of Dalby Forest 2 Spotted Flycatchers were seen, plus a male Redstart, a Marsh Tit, a Treecreeper and a Nuthatch. 2 juvenile Tufted Duck, 2 Coot, and a Hobby were seen at Seamer Road Mere.

A single Crossbill was seen over Falsgrave Park this morning, and a second calendar year Mediterranean Gull flew north past Long Nab. 2 Cuckoos, a singing Redstart, 2 Tree Pipits and a pair of Stonechats were at Flass Brow, and a Green Woodpecker was at May Beck. 2 Cuckoos were also seen and heard in the forest south of the ponds off Harwood Dale Road by Jugger Howe, where there were also a Turtle Dove, 3 Buzzards, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Garden Warbler, a Whitethroat and Tree Pipits. Stonechat territories were found at Stoupe Brow where 5 juveniles were spotted, and at Staintondale Moor where a male was singing. A female Wheatear was seen in suitable breeding territory near Ravenscar.

A flock of 40+ Crossbills were in woodland just north of Cloughton this morning, and a single Crossbill was seen over Hovingham Drive. In the Pexton Lake area of Dalby Forest there was a Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Grey Wagtails, and a Garden Warbler, while in the Ellerburn Farm area there was also a Spotted Flycatcher and a Grey Wagtail. A young Kingfisher was spotted at Scalby Mills this afternoon, a Coot was at Seamer Road Mere, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Barnacle Geese and a drake Wigeon. Large numbers of Manx Shearwaters were seen moving north throughout the day, with the total number counted eventually reaching 1402 - the highest since August 1978 when 1514 were counted. Other highlights of the sea watch included 269 Fulmars, a Blue Fulmar, 46 Common Scoter, 3 Red-throated Divers, a Great Skua and 232 Puffins. Highlights from a BBS square at Flotmanby Carr included 9 Curlew, 2 pairs of Sedge Warblers, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Little Owl, and a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers feeding their young at the nest site. 2 pairs of Reed Warblers were at the small pool on Taylor Way, where 350 Starlings were seen heading to their roost site.

Sightings from Long Nab today included a total of 409 Manx Shearwaters, 299 Fulmars, an Eider, a Red-throated Diver, 5 Common Terns and 191 Puffins. 47 Manx Shearwaters, 15 Puffins and 12 Sandwich Terns were also seen from Marine Drive in the early afternoon. A (lost?) Fulmar was spotted flying west over Hovingham Drive. A pair of Coots at Johnson's Marsh had 4 chicks, and at Harwood Dale Lake there was an Oystercatcher, a female Mandarin and a Shelduck. 40 to 50 Swifts were seen over gardens between Garfield Road and Dean Road cemetery, and 100+ Swifts were feeding low over the grass verges between Ayton and Snainton. Further along the road, beyond Snainton there were large numbers of Swallows feeding over the verges, and then beyond Allerston it became House Martins that were feeding in abundance.

An Osprey was seen at Wykeham Lakes this morning, plus 2 Little Ringed Plovers, a Dunlin, a drake Teal and 8 Tufted Duck. In the afternoon 3 Honey Buzzards were seen from Wykeham Raptor viewpoint, plus an Osprey heading south-west. A drake Eider flew south at Long Nab, a Red Kite was seen in Yedingham, and 2 Barnacle Geese were in the new workings area of Wykeham Lakes.

A Black Redstart was at Ravenscar church yard. At Wykeham South Lake this morning there were 2 Barnacle Geese, 2 Egyptian Geese, a drake Teal and 8 Great Crested Grebes. A Barn Owl was hunting at Gristhorpe Cliff, while an Arctic Tern, 28 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Red-throated Divers and a Curlew flew north past Long Nab. An Osprey was seen over the forest cottages at North Moor, where there were also about 70 Crossbills. 21 Tufted Duck were at Seamer Road Mere, and at Northstile pool there were 3 broods of Mandarins (9, 5 and 4 ducklings) and still just one Shelduck.

Highlights passing Long Nab include 4 Arctic Terns, a Red-throated Diver, 125 Common Scoter, 51 Manx Shearwaters and 94 Puffins heading north, and 5 Manx Shearwaters and 8 Puffins heading south. At Peasholm Park there were 23 Swifts, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, 17 Swallows and 4 House Martins.

10 Crossbills flew south over Falsgrave Park this morning, and a single Crossbill flew west over Whin Bank. A family of newly-fledged Nuthatches and a Spotted Flycatcher were by the river near Woodhouse bridge, and a second Spotted Flycatcher was seen further down the river towards Hackness. 2 Little Ringed Plover were at Wykeham South Lake, as were 380 Herring Gulls and 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, while at least 16 singing Reed Warblers were around the lakes, and a Willow Tit was singing by Match Lake. 3 Red Kites were seen together over Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint, and a dark female Honey Buzzard was displaying east of the viewpoint. A Turtle Dove was singing near Wykeham Forest nursery and 2 Turtle Doves were seen in Dalby Forest east of High Rigg Farm. A Crossbill flew south over Pheasant Covert, Potter Brompton Carr, where there was also a Spotted Flycatcher and a young Great Spotted Woodpecker. A Red-throated Diver, 77 Common Scoter and a Curlew were among the birds seen passing Long Nab, and a Siskin was on Castle Hill. 20+ Swifts were seen over Tennyson Avenue.

Monday 1st June

2 Nightjars, a Woodcock and a Tawny Owl were in the woodland opposite The Falcon Inn last night. Birds detected on a BBS survey in square NZ9102 this morning included 2 Cuckoo, 3 Curlew, a Snipe and 2 Peregrines having a noisy tussle. An adult Great Black-backed Gull was in the council yard on Dean Road this afternoon, and 2 Barnacle Geese landed in fields south of Wykeham South Lake.
