Wednesday 30th December

3 Great Northern Divers, 2 Guillemots, a Great Crested Grebe, a Red-throated Diver and a Razorbill were at the harbour this morning. At Seamer Road Mere there were 3 Teal, 8 Goldeneye, 2 drake Goosanders and 2 Water Rails, while 2 Hawfinches were at Troutsdale Bridge. 2+ Twite were with about 60 Linnets at Rocks Lane, Burniston (300-400m west of Cliff Top House), and a Lapland Bunting was in the stubble at Long Nab where 5 Blackbirds arrived from the east. 11 Mandarins were at Harwood Dale Lake, while 240 Fieldfare and a Lesser Redpoll were seen in Broxa Forest. A first winter White-fronted Goose and a Barnacle Goose were with Greylags and a Shoveler at Seamer Tip pool, and 30+ Magpies were in the fields below the pool. 13 Barnacle Geese were at Wykeham Lakes and a Chiffchaff was seen in Hutton Buscel. A Short-eared Owl was spotted near Mowthorpe Bridge.

Tuesday 29th December

A skein of 100+ geese was seen heading west over Staxton Wold this morning, and 3 Great Northern Divers were in the harbour. 7 Little Egrets were at Folkton Bridge, and 8 were by Flixton sewage works together with 36 Pied Wagtails. At Wykeham South Lake there were about 150 Mallard, 7 Goldeneye and 100 Wigeon, and a Green Sandpiper was on a flood along the A64 by Merry Lees Park. An immature Little Gull was spotted heading north at Cornelian Bay and a skein of geese flew over Ayton/Hutton Buscel. 4 Pale-bellied Brent Geese and 3 Eiders flew north past Long Nab, while a Barnacle Goose, a Shoveler and 13 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip pool. Monday 28th December

A Great Northern Diver was in the harbour this morning, and another was in South Bay. In the afternoon there were 3 in South Bay together with 3 Great Crested Grebes, while a Long-tailed Duck was by the harbour mouth prior to leaving north. 6 Little Grebes, 8 Goldeneye and 2 drake Goosanders were at Seamer Road Mere. 39 Fieldfare, a Kestrel and a Great Spotted Woodpecker were at Spiker's Hill; 12 Yellowhammers and 9 Fieldfare were at Kimlin Slack; and 57 another Fieldfare were at Coverdale Moor.Sadly a male Blackcap was found dead following a window strike at Westwood Court. A Water Rail and a Kingfisher were pesent at the Open Air Theatre, and 72 Teal and a Heron were at Johnson's Marsh. About 400 Pink-footed Geese flew north over Gristhorpe, while at Flotmanby Marsh there were about 300 Teal and 8 Whooper Swans were just west of Flotmanby reservoir. 3+ Lapland Buntings were again at Long Nab where there was a Scandanavian Rock Pipit with Norwegian scheme colour rings. A drake Goosander flew south. 2 Kingfishers, 80 Fieldfare, a Chiffchaff and a Lesser Redpoll were at Seamer Water Treatment works. Full count from Long Nab here:

Sunday 27th December

3 Great Northern Divers and a Great Crested Grebe were in the harbour this morning, a Red-throated Diver was off the lighthouse pier, and a pair of Kestrels were off Castle Headland. A Sparrowhawk was seen on Main Street in Ayton, and 2 Dippers were on Thornton Beck in Thornton Dale. 21 Ringed Plover were in Jackson's Bay, and a Purple Sandpiper was with Redshanks and Oystercatchers at Scalby Ness. 5 Little Grebes, 6 Goldeneye and 2 drake Goosanders were at Seamer Road Mere. 33 Pink-footed Geese flew south at Long Nab, and 18 White-fronted Geese flew south over Wykeham Lakes where a pair of Egyptian Geese were present.

Saturday 26th December

A Great White Egret, a Gadwall and a Shoveler were at Seamer Tip pools this morning, the former flying off north-west towards Burton Riggs. 60+ Pink-footed Geese also flew west over Seamer Tip, and a female Eider was at Scalby Mills. 2 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble field at Long Nab, and at Cayton Bay 53 Oystercatchers were in the fields. 5 Bramblings were among a flock of 200-300 Chaffinches at Wilton Heights. A Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Chaffinch, a male Bullfinch and 2 Long-tailed Tits were at Scalby cricket pitch. Full count from Long Nab here:

Friday 25th December

Two Great Northern Divers were in South Bay/harbour. A single Great Crested Grebe in South Bay. At Seamer Road Mere were 5 Little Grebes, 6 Goldeneye, 2 drake Goosanders, a Water Rail and a first-winter Mediterranean Gull. 7 Little Grebes, 3 Marsh Tits at Papermill, Ellerburn.

Thursday 24th December

 A Great Skua flew north past Long Nab this morning, while 37 Curlews were in the stubble field and another 22 were at Johnson's Marsh. 2 Great Northern Divers and 3 Guillemots were at the harbour and a juvenile Glaucous Gull was seen at Scalby Mills. 2 Wigeon and a first winter White-fronted Goose were at Seamer Tip pool, the latter with a Greylag flock, and a male and a female Goosander flew over Burton Riggs towards the coast. A female Scaup and 7 Little Grebes were at Papermill Lake, Ellerburn, where 6 Buzzards and 8 Grey Herons were also seen. An adult and a first winter Mediterranean Gull were at Seamer Road Mere in the afternoon, and a female Eider was at Scalby Mills. 3 Great Northern Divers and a Red-throated Diver were at the harbour/South Bay and 30 Purple Sandpipers were also roosting in the harbour.7 Goosanders were at throxenby Mere.

 A Willow Tit was at North Moor this morning, and the Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour. At North Ings, Low Marishes there were 9 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 8 Goldeneye and 2 Tufted Duck, while in the Low Newstead area there were 790 Pink-footed Geese, 30 Greylags, 840 Wigeon, 80 Teal, a Great White Egret, 7 Pintail, a Snipe, 650 Lapwings and 5 Mute Swans.

Tuesday 22nd December

 2 Whooper Swans were at Wykeham South Lake this morning, where 210 Pink-footed Geese were seen heading east together with 11 Barnacle Geese. A Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour, a first calendar year Razorbill and a Guillemot were near the harbour, a Great Northern Diver plus 5 Great Crested Grebes were in South Bay, and a Fulmar was on the cliffs above North Marine Drive. 620 Pink-footed Geese flew north past Long Nab in the morning.

 A Jay and a Great Spotted Woodpecker were seen at Scalby cricket pitch today. An afternoon count at Low Marishes produced the following: 638 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, 1 Shoveler, 137 Teal, 27 Mallard, 160 Greylag Geese, 200 Pink-footed Geese, 2 Canada Geese, 4 Mute Swans, about 700 Lapwing, about 500 Rooks, 140 Jackdaws, a Grey Heron, 4 Cormorants, 202 Fieldfare and 54 Redwings.

 A Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour this morning, and a Water Rail was heard (though not seen) in the reed bed at the Open Air Theatre. A Tundra Bean Goose flew south over Long Nab then south-east over the sea. 4 Lapland Buntings were seen there in the stubble, while also flying over were 1520 Woodpigeons north, 80 Pink-footed Geese north-west, 2 Goosanders south, and a Grey Plover north after arriving from the east. 100 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Gristhorpe, 130 flew south past Scalby Mills, and 900 were at Low Marishes, together with a single Barnacle Goose. A Dark-bellied Brent Goose was at Lebberston flash, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 5 Little Grebes, a drake Goosander, a female Goldeneye, a Water Rail and a Chiffchaff. 4 Stonechats, 3 Willow Tits, 2 Marsh Tits and a Crossbill were seen at Housedale in Dalby Forest.

 A drake Goosander was at Peasholm Park this morning, while a Willow Tit and 6 Cormorants were at Burton Riggs. There were 9 Little Egrets at Folkton sewage works in the afternoon, and this evening a large number of Pink-footed Geese flew over Thornton Dale, having been put up from a roost near Thornton Carrs by a firework display.

 6 Little Egrets were in the area of Folkton sewage works this morning. A female Eider was in North Bay, where 4 Ringed Plover were on the rocks. A Great Northern Diver was in the harbour, and another flew south past Long Nab. 10 Mandarins were at Harwood Dale Lake.

A drake Pintail was seen at Burton Riggs early this morning. At Cayton Bay there was a Guillemot present and lots of Fulmars were at nest sites, while 65 Pink-footed Geese flew in off the sea and 80+ Teal flew north. 15 Pink-footed Geese flew west over Snainton, about 300 flew west over Eastfield, 12 flew south at Long Nab, 171 flew south over South Bay, and 200 flew south over Cayton. A Lapland Bunting was on the Cleveland Way just south of the Long Nab observatory, and a Little Owl was at Rocks Lane. A Great Northern Diver was off lighthouse pier, while 2 Shags, a Cormorant and 3 Guillemots were seen in the harbour. A Great Northern Diver was in South Bay and 5 Goldeneye flew south there. An Eider was on the sea off the Sea Life Centre, and at Wykeham Lakes there wee 5 Barnacle Geese and 2 Shoveler.

 80 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east over Gristhorpe this morning. At Wykeham Lakes there were 3 Goldeneye, 30+ Greylags, 15 Mallard, a Great Crested Grebe, 80 Herring Gulls and 10 Cormorants at the East Lake, plus 56 Greylags and 2 White-fronted Geese in the field behind, while South Lake hosted 57 Coot, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 7 Herons, 7 Goldeneye, 11 Cormorants, 50 Mallard, about 200 Wigeon, and many Canada Geese. 300-400 Pink-footed Geese, 5 Barnacle Geese, 2 Canada Geese, 10 Greylags, 2 Mute Swans, about 1000 Starlings and about 50 Fieldfares were at Low Marishes, while 8 Little Grebes were at Papermill Lake. A Great Northern Diver flew north past Long Nab and 3 Eiders were seen offshore. A Little Owl and 15 Redpolls were at Hutton Buscel. 5 Barnacle Geese were at Wykeham Lakes in the afternoon.

 50 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east over Gristhorpe this morning, and 3 Guillemots were at the harbour. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was on a feeder at Heron Lane. At Wykeham South Lake there were 112 Wigeon, 70 Coot, 4 Stonechats, 6 Goldeneye and a Gadwall, while a male and a female Goldeneye were at Seamer Road Mere together with both a male and a female Goosander also. 5 Lapland Buntings were yet again in the stubble at Long Nab, where a Dark-bellied Brent Goose flew north and 19 Pink-footed Geese flew south.

 A single Russian White-fronted Goose was seen this morning with Greylags at Wykeham East Lake. Also at the lakes were: 2 Barnacle Geese, 64 Mallard, 41 Gadwall, 61 Teal, 88 Wigeon, 5 Goldeneye, 12 Little Grebes, a Willow Tit, 31 Long-tailed Tits and a Chiffchaff. The Great Northern Diver and a Guillemot were again at the harbour, while a drake Goosander and a Grey Wagtail were in Peasholm Park. A drake Shoveler plus an adult and a first winter Mediterranean Gull were at Seamer Tip pools. 2 Goosanders, 9 Goldeneye, 4 Little Grebes, a Water Rail and 71 Moorhens were at Seamer Road Mere. At Scalby Lodge Pond there were 44 Curlew, 12 Lapwings and 14 Wigeon, while 70+ Linnets were by the cottages. 8 Little Egrets were seen in the area of Folkton sewage treatment works, along with about 500 Lapwings and about 500 Black-headed Gulls. A Tawny Owl was in Scalby village this evening.

 A Greenshank was on the rocks at Gristhorpe Bay, and an adult Mediterranean Gull was at Scalby Mills. At Long Nab 6 Fieldfare and a Blackbird flew in from the east, and 18 Snow Buntings and 2 Lapland Buntings were in the stubble field. A Sparrowhawk, a Kestrel and 2 Bullfinches were on an otherwise quiet Garth End Road. Again the Great Northern Diver was in the harbour and a drake Goosander was in Peasholm Park. A redhead Red-breasted Merganser was at Wykeham South Lake.

 17 Whooper Swans, a Goldeneye, 4 Mandarins and 16 Wigeon were at Harwood Dale Lake this morning; at Johnson's Marsh there was a Snipe; and at Scalby Lodge Pond there were 25 Curlew, 2 Redshank, a Lapwing and a Wigeon. A male Blackcap was in a garden on Heron Lane, and at Peasholm Park there was a drake Goosander plus 21 Tufted Duck. A Purple Sandpiper, 27 Redshank and 15 Ringed Plover were at Jackson's Bay, and 6 Lapwings were at Scalby Lodge Pond in the early afternoon. The Great Northern Diver was again around the harbour.

 At Long Nab a drake Gadwall flew past south and 6+ Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble with 85 Skylarks. A female Eider was seen off the harbour and a drake Goosander was on Peasholm Park Lake. The female Eider was in South Bay in the afternoon, as was a Great Northern Diver, and a Woodcock flew in off the sea. A Great Northern Diver was in the harbour in the evening, where 38 Purple Sandpipers were roosting.

Thursday 10th December

 A flock of 7 Velvet Scoters flew south past Long Nab this morning, and 203 Pink-footed Geese flew north inland of there, while a Snow Bunting and 6 Lapland Buntings were in the stubble field. A Goldcrest was seen on Yedmandale Road., and an adult Mediterranean Gull was with about 200 Black-headed Gulls in a field at Yedingham. A Gannet flew north through South Bay, and a Guillemot and the Great Northern Diver were in the harbour. In the late afternoon about 120 Wigeon, 45 Mallard and 13 Goldeneye were at Wykeham South Lake. A skein of Pink-footed Geese flew over Hopper Hill in Eastfield in the early evening.

 More movements of Pink-footed Geese today: a flock were heard over Livingstone Road at 04.25, one individual was seen out heading out to sea over Marine Drive, a flock were heard over Wykeham South Lake, 70 went west over Marine Drive, 386 were seen going north-west over the harbour, and at Long Nab 1136 were seen heading north and 26 south. 4 Willow Tits were along the track from Wrench Green to Northstile this morning. This afternoon an adult Mediterranean Gull was on Cayton Carr, 2 Great Northern Divers were in the harbour, and a Kingfisher and a Dipper were in Peasholm Glen near the bridge. At Wykeham Lakes there were 48 Siskin, 30 Lesser Redpoll and 3 Marsh Tits, while a Great White Egret was on the east side before flying to the west. A drake Shoveler, 76 Teal and 2 Snipe were at Johnson's Marsh. 14 Red-throated Divers were in South Bay and a further 14 flew south and one flew north, while 1000 Herring Gulls and 133 Common Gulls flew out east to roost. A Brent Goose flew west at Long Nab with 7 Greylags, and 6 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble.

Tuesday 8th December

 A day of huge movements of Pink-footed Geese, mostly south and south-west, beginning with several flocks of 200+ over Scalby Mills, the harbour, Muston and Cayton, large flocks heading inland over Knipe Point and Hutton Buscel, a total of 1460 south/south-west over Seamer Road Mere, and a total of 5,180 in off the sea heading on south/south-west at Long Nab through the morning. Smaller numbers continued to be reported through the afternoon/evening. A Woodcock was at Dean Road cemetery early in the morning. At Wykeham South Lake there were 14 Pochard, 43 Mallard, 8 Goldeneye, and a Great White Egret which flew off west. 6 Goldeneye were at Seamer Road Mere, and 500+ Lapwing were in a flooded sheep field on Cayton Carr. 200+ Jackdaws and a mixed flock of 50+ Redwing and Fieldfare were seen from the back road to Wykeham South Lake. 6 (Tundra?) Bean Geese flew over Knipe Point, while other birds of note seen from Long Nab include a Great Skua heading north and 5 Lapland Buntings in the stubble field. A Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour and another in South Bay with 4 Red-throated Divers.

 2 Great Northern Divers were again in the harbour/South Bay this morning, and a Chiffchaff was still in Holbeck Ravine. 62 Curlew, 35 Redshank, 10 Lapwing, a Stonechat and 6 Wigeon were at (a now full) Scalby Lodge Pond. The juvenile Iceland Gull was again at Scalby Mills, and 7 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble field at Long Nab. 2 Great White Egrets were seen this afternoon - one in the south-east corner of Wykeham South Lake and the other at Potter Brompton Carr. The 2 Great Northern Divers were still around in the afternoon - one in the harbour with a Shag and 2 Cormorants, the other in South Bay along with a Guillemot, 2 Razorbills and an adult Mediterranean Gull.

 2 Great Northern Divers were in the harbour/South Bay this morning, as were 2 Guillemots (plus a dead ringed Shag). 3 Long-tailed Ducks flew north past Holbeck, then half an hour later flew south past Long Nab, probably landing in Jackson's Bay. A Pomarine Skua flew south past Long Nab, and also passing were a Great Northern Diver and 2 Great Skuas, while 4 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble field. 11 Goldeneye, 9 Great Crested Grebes and 12 Redpoll were at Wykeham South Lake, and 5 White-fronted Geese flew east. 6 Little Egrets were at Folkton Bridge, a juvenile Iceland Gull was at Scalby Mills, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, 6 Goldeneye and 2 Goosanders.

 A Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour mouth this morning, and was still around in the afternoon. 5 Russian White-fronted Geese flew south past Long Nab, and later in the day were seen at Wykeham Lakes with a Pink-footed Goose and 21 Great Crested Grebes. 200+ Siskins were feeding in Alders on Long Lane, where 17 Lapwings, a Buzzard and a Greylag were also seen. 7 Goldeneye, a Goosander, a Water Rail and a Chiffchaff were at Seamer Road Mere. 2 Gadwall, 33 Mallard, 30 Teal, 115 Golden Plover, 320 Lapwings, 70 Fieldfare and 36 Redwing were at Low Marishes in the early afternoon. A drake Eider was in South Bay, and 4 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble at Long Nab. 45 Pink-footed Geese, 10 Eiders, a Great Northern Diver and 3 Great Skuas flew past. At Seamer Tip pool there were an adult Mediterranean Gull and a Great Spotted Woodpecker, while 135 Pink-footed Geese flew over north. A Goldeneye flew south and a Great Northern Diver flew north past South Cliff this afternoon/evening.

 A Little Egret was seen at Thornton Carrs this morning, and 3 were near the bridge at Folkton Sewage Farm in the afternoon. 3 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble field at Long Nab, and a Woodcock was seen on Rocks Lane. 54 Teal and 12 Snipe were at Johnson's Marsh, while a Goldeneye, 65 Fieldfare and 6 Redwing were at Harwood Dale Lake. Seamer Road Mere had much the same bird community as yesterday though the number of Goldeneye had risen to 8. A Great Northern Diver and a Mallard were seen in the inner harbour, and 40 minutes later a Great Northern Diver (probably the same one) was in South Bay off the harbour mouth, together with 2 Red-throated Divers and 2 Razorbills. A Chiffchaff was still in Holbeck Ravine.

 7 Goldeneye, 2 Goosanders, 3 Mediterranean Gulls (2 adults and a first winter bird) and a Chiffchaff were at Seamer Road Mere this morning. 3 Lapland Buntings were in the stubble field at Long Nab where a Great Northern Diver flew past northwards. Wykeham South Lake was generally quiet, with 8 Goldeneye, 3 Gadwall, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 42 Coot, 17 Mallard and 11 Long-tailed Tits present. Chiffchaffs were newly arrived at both Holbeck and Holbeck ravine. A Water Rail was in Cornelian Ravine and a Great Northern Diver was again in South Bay.

 The Long-tailed Duck returned to the harbour for much of the day, while a Great Northern Diver was feasting on flatfish just off the outer pier. The Common Tern was also still present, fishing in Cornelian Bay, but there was no sign today of the Mealy Redpoll in Holbeck Ravine. A male Blackcap was spotted in a mahonia bush on Heron Lane, and a Red Kite was seen at Wrea Head. A Teal, 5 Goldeneye, a pair of Goosanders, 2 Water Rails, a Coot, 3 Little Grebes, a first winter Mediterranean Gull and a Chiffchaff were at Seamer Road Mere, and a Goldeneye was in South Bay. Highlights from Long Nab include a Goshawk flushed from the ringing plantation with a rat, 5 Lapland Buntings in the stubble, and a Chiffchaff on Rocks Lane, while a Mealy Redpoll and 2 Great Northern Divers flew north.

Tuesday 1st December

 3 male and 2 female Bullfinch were at Plaxton Court this morning. A drake Long-tailed Duck and a Great Northern Diver were both in the harbour from mid-morning till late afternoon, when the former left to roost off Holbeck. Also at the harbour were 2 Guillemots and 14 Purple Sandpipers. Yesterday's Common Tern left its roost in South Bay and spent the morning moving back and forth. It (or another?) was seen off Cayton Bay, where a Great Northern Diver was seen flying south an a Mediterranean Gull  north. Also passing South Bay/Holbeck this morning were a Manx Shearwater and 13 Great Skuas heading north, plus one Great Skua, an Arctic Skua and 2 Velvet Scoters south. 5 Lapland Buntings were again in the stubble field this morning at Long Nab, where a Sooty Shearwater, 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 6 Great Skuas and a Puffin flew past. In the afternoon a Sandwich Tern was again feeding off Long Nab, while 7 Little Gulls flew north and a Manx Shearwater flew south. The Mealy Redpoll was in Holbeck Ravine again, and at Seamer Tip pool 51 Fieldfares left the hedge and flew south. Passing South Cliff this afternoon/evening were 30 Eider heading north and 2 south.
