Friday 31st January

A single Snow Bunting flew south at Long Nab this morning. At Seamer Road Mere there were 2 Coot, 4 Little Grebes, 2 Teal, 32 Tufted Duck, 5 Goosanders and a Water Rail, while 9 Little Egrets were near the Cayton Carrs sewage works. At Staintondale there were 150 Redwings, and at Ravenscar there were 4 Mistle Thrushes, 450 Starlings and a Raven. A Waxwing was seen for the fifth day in  a garden in Derwent Avenue, and a male Blackcap has been in a garden in Hutton Buscel for a week.

450 Fieldfares, 100 Redwings and 150 Starlings were at Coverdale Moor, above Spiker's Hill, this morning. At Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, a Coot, 30 Tufted Duck, 2 Teal, 3 Goosanders and a Water Rail. 2 Twite were at Crook Ness and a Shelduck flew north at Long Nab. A Redshank, 2 Water Rails, a Kingfisher and a Grey Wagtail were at the Open Air Theatre.

A mixed flock of about 150 Redwings and Fieldfares were seen this morning at Charm Park. A Pink-footed Goose was among a flock of geese at Seamer Tip pool, a Willow Tit was by the railway track just south of there, and a Marsh Tit was at Burton Riggs. 1000 Lapwing were at Seamer Mead, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 8 Goldeneye, 2 Shoveler, a Teal and an Oystercatcher. A single Knot flew north past Long Nab, and a Golden Plover was in the field just north of Crook Ness. 47 Wigeon were at Harwood Dale Lake and a pair of Shelduck were at Johnson's Marsh.

Tuesday 28th January

200+ Redwing, 250 Lapwings and 20 Skylark were seen between Long Lane and Garth End Road this morning. 4 Goldeneye and a female Stonechat were at Wykeham South Lake and a Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen on Heron Lane, Crossgates. At the Open Air Theatre a Kingfisher was feeding below the water chute, 2 Water Rails were by the causeway, and a Redshank and a Bullfinch were also present. A pair of Goshawks were seen displaying from Wykeham raptor viewpoint in the early afternoon. This evening the gull roost at Wykeham South Lake included 1800 Common Gulls, 1400 Black-headed Gulls and 20 Herring Gulls. 8 Twite were just south of Crook Ness, and 6 Snow Buntings were by the manure heap at Cromer Point Pond.

At Seamer Road Mere this morning there were 3 Little Grebes, a Coot, a Goosander, 24 Tufted Duck and 2 Teal. 8 pairs of Fulmars were on the Castle headland, and 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls were at Holbeck car park. Highlights from Long Nab included 1+ Twite which was again with about 50 Linnets, plus a Chifchaff, at Crook Ness; also a Kittiwake, 61 Gannets, a Golden Plover and 3 Skylarks flying past. 2 Water Rails were spotted behind the Open Air Theatre, and a single Waxwing was in the car park outside Halfords. 4 Snow Buntings were by the Cromer Point manure heap, 14 Ringed Plover were in Jackson's Bay, and 3 Tundra Bean Geese flew south over Scalby Nab. At Wykeham Lakes there were 59 Teal, 11 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 3 Goldeneye, 4 Great Crested Grebes, and a gull roost that included 1200 Black-headed Gulls and 600 Common Gulls.

At Seamer Road Mere this morning there were 4 Little Grebes, a Coot, 4 Teal, a Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 29 Tufted Duck, 3 Goosanders, and a Skylark flew over north. A Lesser Black-backed Gull flew east over Seamer Mead, 6 Skylarks were to the south of Seamer Tip, and 5 Gadwall were at Burton Riggs. At Wykeham South Lake there were 6 Great Crested Grebes, 66 Coot, 15 Gadwall, 16 Tufted Duck, 8 Goldeneye, 2 Water Rails and a Brambling. A Water Rail was also seen at the Open Air Theatre, where there were also 2 Kingfishers. 59 Curlew were on Folkton Carr, and a single Pink-footed Goose was spotted just east of Cayton.

2 Jays were seen this morning at Limestone Grove, and a Merlin was spotted at Low North Camp. A first-winter "Viking" Gull (hybrid Glaucous x Herring) flew south past Long Nab, as did 8 Common Scoter. 41 Wigeon and a Mandarin were at Harwood Dale Lake, a Kingfisher and a Water Rail were at the Open Air Theatre, and 52 Curlew were on Folkton Carr. At Scalby Mills there were 12 Ringed Plover, 560 Wigeon, 5 Goosanders, a drake Shoveler and a female Teal, while 20 Purple Sandpipers were roosting at the harbour this afternoon.

A Great Spotted Woodpecker was in the Manor Road cemetery this morning, and at Wykeham South Lake there were 9 Goldeneye, 14 Mallard, 5 Gadwall, 4 Wigeon, 15 Tufted Duck, 4 Little Grebes, 8 Great Crested Grebes and a Great White Egret. 12+ Ringed Plovers were bathing at Scalby Mills, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, 27 Tufted Duck, 4 Goosanders, an adult Mediterranean Gull, and a Skylark flew over northwards. 16 Buzzards were in the Wykeham Village/ North Moor area (13 of them in Beedale), and a male Stonechat was spotted on the east side of Seamer Tip. A Red Grouse was seen on High Moor, Fylingdales Moor, and at Derwent Head in Langdale Forest there were 2 Stonechats, 40 Fieldfare, 6 Crossbills, and 4 Meadow Pipits.

A Chiffchaff was seen at Crook Ness this morning, from where it moved north along the clifftop. At Seamer Road Mere there were 18 Tufted Duck, a Goosander, 2 Teal, 4 Little Grebe, a Coot and a Blackcap. 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls were at Black Rocks and 5 Red-throated Divers were in South Bay. A female Blackcap was again visiting feeders at Heron Lane; 480 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills; and a female Stonechat was on the rock armour opposite lamp post 26 on Marine Drive.

2 Shelduck, 50 Meadow Pipits and 30 Pied Wagtails were on Cayton Carr this morning, and a Chiffchaff and 2 Little Egrets were by the sewage works there. Along the Hertford between Cayton and Flixton there were 85 Teal, 1500 Lapwings and a Water Rail, while at New Dike, in the Seamer Tip area, there were 14 Teal, a Little Egret, a Kingfisher and 6 Grey Partridge. 11 Gadwall and a Water Rail were seen at Seamer Tip pool; 5 Grey Partridge and 2 Common Snipe were seen at Taylor Way; and 5 Goosanders were seen at Burton Riggs. At Seamer Road Mere there were 25 Tufted Duck, 6 Goosanders, a Coot, 4 Little Grebes and a Tawny Owl.  12 Ringed Plovers were at Scalby Mills, where there was also a Black-headed Gull that was ringed as an adult near Stravanger on 23/5/15, and is now on its fifth winter in Scarborough.

The Great Grey Shrike was still just north of Langdale Forest at Derwent Head, also in that area Red Grouse, 3 Stonechats, 3 Meadow Pipits and 6+ Crossbills (two in song). Further south in the same forest a Willow Tit and 120 Siskin were at Stony Knoll plus a Green Woodpecker at Black Wood. The Little Owl again below Snainton. A Little Egret flew NE over Crossgates. A female Merlin flew in off the sea at Marine Drive, 17 Purple Sandpipers were roosting on East Pier plus 3 Red-throated Divers and a Shag off there. Wykeham South Lake had a Great White Egret, 14 Gadwall, 34 Tufted Duck, Wigeon, 9 Goldeneye and 2 Snipe. 5 Wigeon and 12 Gadwall on Taylor Way pond.

The Waxwing was again in the car park at B&Q. A female Blackcap was on feeders in Crossgates. A pair of Shelduck were at Johnson's Marsh. At Potter Brompton Carr there were 2 Water Rails, 4 Snipe, 83 Lapwing flew west, a pair of Stonechats and c70 Pied Wagtails. Wykeham South Lake also had 2 Water Rails, Kingfisher, 12 Gadwall and 9 Goldeneye. 36 Curlews were in fields at Scalby Lodge, also 30 Skylarks. 20 Long-tailed Tits were at Crescent Gardens. A Twite was with 14 Linnets at Crook Ness. 6 Shelducks and 3 Red-breasted Mergansers flew north at Long Nab. Seven Goshawks from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint today.

A single Waxwing was around the B&Q car park again throughout the day. 100+ Redwings and 4 Mistle Thrushes were seen off Newlands Lane in Cloughton, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, 2 Teal, 29 Tufted Duck, a Goosander, 2 Water Rails, 10 Common Gulls and a Peregrine. A Great White Egret was spotted flying south over Seamer Mead and 4 Golden Plover were flying with a Lapwing flock around the adjacent carrs, while about 100 Fieldfares were in a field to the south of Seamer Tip. A Black-headed Gull was seen at Scalby Mills this afternoon that had been ringed as an adult near Oslo on 29/5/18.

A pair of Shoveler, 4 Gadwall and 6 Pink-footed Geese were at Seamer Tip pool this morning. 70+ Redwing and 100 Lapwing were seen from Garth End Road, and 120+ Lapwings and 350+ Golden Plover were seen south of Wykeham South Lake. 2 Shelduck, 10 Grey Herons and 35 Curlew were at Johnson's Marsh, and a Red-throated Diver and a Guillemot were seen from Long Nab. A Great White Egret was spotted at Wykeham South Lake in the early afternoon, and a Chiffchaff was seen at the bottom of Franklin Street before flying off down Columbus Ravine. 2 Buzzards were seen over Barmoor Lane, Scalby, and 3 were displaying on Suffield top. A single Waxwing was seen around the car park outside B&Q and Dunelm.

4 Little Grebes, a Coot, 24 Tufted Duck, a Goldeneye, 7 Goosanders and a Water Rail were at Seamer Road Mere this morning. At Thornton Charity Farm there were 5 Grey Partridge, and a Grey Wagtail. A circuit round Dalby revealed 5 Woodcocks, 8 Crossbills, 20 Siskins and 3 Marsh Tits. A female Stonechat was spotted on the Cleveland Way south of Holbeck, and 6 Mediterranean Gulls (5 adult and 1 second winter bird) were on the rocks off there. At Black Rocks, between Holbeck and Cornelian Bay, there were 23 Purple Sandpipers, 32 Turnstones, 54 Oystercatchers and 5 Curlew.

A Goosander was at Burton Riggs this morning, and 45 Curlew were at Scalby Lodge Pond. 3 Shovelers were at Seamer Tip pool, while in the fields nearby a total of 21 Pink-footed Geese were seen among Greylag and Canada Geese. At Wykeham South Lake there were 40 Lapwing, 50 Redwing, 30 Yellowhammer and 10 Great Crested Grebes.

37 Fieldfares were at Irton Moor this morning, and the Hooded Crow was in fields between Scalby Beck and Scalby Lodge Pond. 2 Eiders flew south past Long Nab, 11 Goldeneye were at Wykeham South Lake, and 42 Curlew were at Scalby Lodge pond. 40+ Siskins were seen in Forge Valley, and 4 Redwings were feeding on berries at the town centre end of Valley Bridge. At Seamer Road Mere there were 8 Goosanders, 4 Little Grebes, 29 Tufted Ducks and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. A Short-eared Owl was hunting at Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 4 Kestrels and a Common Buzzard. The Hooded Crow was seen again in the evening on the rocks in Jackson's Bay, where there were also a pair of Eiders.

Tuesday 14th January

4 Wigeon, 7 Herons and 8 Pied Wagtails were seen at Johnson's Marsh this morning, and at Seamer Tip pool there were 3 Shovelers and 8 Pink-footed Geese with the goose flock nearby. A first year Iceland Gull was spotted briefly at Burton Riggs, and at Northstile pool near Wrench Green there were 8 Teal and a drake Goldeneye, plus 2 Willow Tits, 2 Jays, 60+ Siskin, and 20+ Redwing in the vicinity. 4 Snow Buntings were again by the dung heaps at Cromer Point pond, plus a Snipe and a Jack Snipe at the pond itself, and a Stonechat at Cromer Point. At Wykeham South Lake there was a Great White Egret, and a Spotted Redshank was seen briefly before flying off south-east. An immature female Merlin was seen at Potter Brompton Carr, where there was also a Great White Egret, 700+ Lapwing, 2 Golden Plover and a Snipe. A Kingfisher was seen again at the Open Air Theatre, and between Ellerburn Fish Farm and Dalby there were 4 Little Grebes, about 250 Siskin, 7 Marsh Tits, a Willow Tit and 80 Redwing. 12-15 Crossbills were near the top of Langate in Wykeham Forest, several of them singing males. In and around the little field near there was a large (120+) mixed finch flock, composed mainly of Chaffinches but with good numbers of Yellowhammers, Goldfinches, Greenfinches and a few Bramblings.

In the Yedingham/Low Marishes area this morning there were 3 Snipe, 600 Lapwing, 80 Teal, 90 Wigeon, and 11 Pink-footed Geese plus 80 more flying north. 2 Willow Tits were along Friar Dike. In the field below Seamer Tip pool there were 9 Pink-footed Geese with a mixed goose flock, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 3 Little Grebes, a Coot, 21 Tufted Duck, a Goosander and a Water Rail. Both a male and a female Kingfisher were spotted at the Open Air Theatre. Between Low Dalby and Heck Dale there were 590+ Siskins feeding, mostly in one large loose flock, plus 21 Bullfinches, 33 Chaffinches, a few Crossbills, Redpolls, Goldfinches and Greenfinches, 14 Goldcrests and 17 Robins.

5 Little Egrets were at Cayton Carr this morning, and later 9 Pink-footed Geese, 17 Lapwings and a Kestrel. At Seamer Road Mere there were 3 Goosanders, 19 Tufted Duck, a Coot, 3 Little Grebes and a Water Rail, while at Burton Riggs there were 3 Goosanders (2 male, 1 female) and a Little Grebe. A Red Kite was seen over Racecourse Road, just outside Ayton. 3 Snow Buntings were again at the Cromer Point muck heap, and 18 Curlew were at Scalby Lodge pond. 3 Grey Plovers were seen in Cornelian Bay, a Great Crested Grebe was in North Bay, and 120 Wigeon and a Little Egret were at Low Marishes. Late afternoon 4 Red-throated Divers were spotted in South Bay, 2 Shags and 4 Guillemots were seen off Marie Drive, and 3 Red-throated Divers and 49 Redshanks were in North Bay. In Jackson's Bay there were 11 Ringed Plover and 43 Oystercatchers; at the Open Air Theatre there was a Kingfisher and a Water Rail; and at Scalby Mills there were 750 Wigeon.

Saturday 11th Jahuary

9 Ringed Plover were seen at Scalby Mills this morning, a Kingfisher was seen at the Open Air Theatre, and a Chiffchaff was in Cornelian Ravine. The Hooded Crow was seen again, with about 30 Carrion Crows, moving between Scalby Lodge Pond field and the field to the south of this. The hunt for Great Grey Shrikes in the forests returned a blank, though lots of Crossbills were around - 10 seen in Harwood Dale Forest, 7 in Sneaton Forest, and large numbers in Langdale Forest - as well as 200-300 Brambling in an area of beech in Dalby Forest. This afternoon 3 Snow Bunting were around dung heaps between Cromer Point pond and the water treatment works, 41 Curlew were at Scalby Lodge Pond, 1080 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills, and 3 Purple Sandpiper and 63 Redshank were on rocks opposite lamp post 25 in North Bay. A Great White Egret was still at Wykeham South Lake, and Pink-footed Geese were in fields behind Seamer Tip pool. A Dipper was seen at Hilla Green bridge.

A Great White Egret was seen at Wykeham South Lake this morning before it flew off westwards. Also at WSL were 17 Wigeon (and another 52 that flew over), 3 Gadwall, 8 Goldeneye, 10 Great Crested Grebes, and 3 flocks of  Lapwings (approximately 400) that flew over heading south. 3 female Goosanders and 8 Tufted Duck were at Throxenby Mere, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 5 Water Rails, a Coot, 4 Little Grebes, 21 Tufted Duck, 2 Goldeneye and a Goosander.

2 Whooper Swans were on Cayton Carr this morning with the 11 (and later 12) White-fronted Geese. 7 Little Egrets were at Folkton Bridge, and 10 Waxwings were in the park off Heron Lane. At Seamer Road Mere there were just 23 Tufted Duck, a Little Grebe, a Coot and a Goosander remaining. A first year Iceland Gull was at Burton Riggs, 5 Pink-footed Geese were with a goose flock near Seamer Tip bridge, and a female Blackcap was at a bird table on Heron Lane.

11 White-fronted Geese were still on Cayton Carr this morning. A Chiffchaff and a Little Egret were by the sewage works, where a Lapland Bunting was seen flying south. A Brambling was near Piggs Farm, Garth End Road in West Ayton. A Waxwing was spotted in the B&Q car park, being chased by a Mistle Thrush, and 6 Waxwings were again in the park by Greenfinch Close in Crossgates. A Shelduck was at Johnson's Marsh, and at Cromer Point pond there were 2 Jack Snipe, 2 Common Snipe, a Lapwing, and 21 Snow Buntings feeding by the dung heaps. 460 Lapwings, 30 Teal, 250 Fieldfare, 150 Redwings and 10 Grey Partridge were seen along the Hertford between Cayton and Flixton. A Shoveler and a Pink-footed Goose were at Seamer Tip pool, and 7 more Pink-footed Geese flew down into the field east of there. At New Dike, also in the Seamer Tip area, were Little Egret, a Kingfisher and 5 Grey Partridge, and on Taylor Way there was a Teal, a Common Snipe, 6 Grey Partridge and 20 Redwing. A Rough-legged Buzzard was spotted at Carr Fields Lane, heading south after being mobbed by corvids, and 100 Redwing were at Long Lane. 18 White-fronted Geese flew over Harwood Dale Lake, where a Shelduck remains. At Wykeham South Lake there were 10 Goldeneye, a pair of Wigeon, 7 Great Crested Grebes, a Willow Tit and 17 Mallard, while at Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, a Coot, 2 Water Rails, 25 Tufted Duck, 4 Goosanders, 2 Goldeneye, a Woodcock and a Chiffchaff. A flock of 20+ Redwings and a pair of Bullfinches were close to the railway path in Burniston, 2 Stonechats were at Cromer Point pond, and at Hackness Lake there were 21 Mandarins (15 male, 6 female), 4 Little Grebes, 3 Tufted Duck and 2 Mute Swans. At Potter Brompton Carr there were 5 White-fronted Geese, 131 Greylag Geese, 83 Wigeon, a drake Shoveler, 11 Mallard and a Great White Egret.

Over 50 Yellowhammers were seen on Middle Lane, Hutton Buscel this morning. A second winter Glaucous Gull was seen at Scalby Mills before flying north towards Jackson's Bay, and a second winter Mediterranean Gull was at Seamer Road Mere along with a Lesser Back-backed Gull. A Goosander was at Scalby Mills and 14 Herons were seen at Johnson's Marsh. A Great Crested Grebe was at Burton Riggs, a Barn Owl was near the motorcycle track at Seamer Tip, and a Shoveler was at Seamer Tip pool. At Folkton Carr there was a Merlin, 50+ Fieldfares and 450+ Lapwings, while at Flotmanby Carr there was a Little Egret. 5 Waxwings were seen around Heron Lane and Curlew Drive in Crossgates, 3 more were seen by Valley Road duck pond, and a single individual was in the B&Q car park. 3 redhead Goldeneye were at Seamer Road Mere.

11 White-fronted Geese were seen on Cayton Carr this morning, and a Shoveler was at Seamer Tip pool. At Seamer Road Mere there were 2 Goldeneye, a Water Rail, a Goosander and 22 Tufted Duck, and 4 Goosanders were seen flying south over Heron Lane, Crossgates. 8 Waxwings were in trees at the eastern end of Flixton village, and another was near Dunelm on Seamer Road. A female Blackcap was in a Crossgates garden, and a Merlin flew south over Flixton.

2 Blackcaps, a male and a female, were in Falsgrave Park this morning. 6 Pink-footed Geese were at Seamer tip large pool, a Shelduck was at Harwood Dale Lake, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 2 Little Grebes, 22 Tufted Duck, 2 Goldeneye, a Goosander and a Chiffchaff. 11 Russian White-fronted Geese were on Cayton Carr, and 4 more were at Potter Brompton Carr, where there were also 2 Great White Egrets. A Peregrine was also nearby at Cayton Carr, and 7 Whooper Swans flew over. A Jack Snipe was spotted at Taylor Way pool, and a drake Pintail and a Pochard were at Wykeham South Lake. A Hooded Crow flew from the field behind Johnson's Marsh towards Crook Ness area in the early afternoon. 7 Mediterranean Gulls were at the Holbeck car park, and 20+ Purple Sandpipers were on East Pier this morning. 60+ Greenfinch feeding near Ings Farm.

Saturday 4th January

A Hooded Crow was spotted at Beedale this morning, and in the afternoon one was also seen flying north towards Cromer Point from Scalby Lodge pond, where there were 41 Curlew in the fields. At Seamer Road Mere there was a Water Rail, a Chiffchaff, 2 Goldeneye, a Goosander and 4 Little Grebes; while 282 Greylag Geese, 4 Pink-footed Geese and 9 Gadwall were seen at Seamer Tip Pool. 9 Gadwall, 8 Goldeneye and a female Stonechat were present at Wykeham South Lake, at Brompton Carr there were 3 Great Egrets, 5 White-fronted Geese, 24 Pink-footed Geese, 102 Wigeon, 2 Shoveler and a Water Rail, and at Throxenby Mere there were 2 Goosanders. A flock of 16 Cormorants flew north over South Bay and 220+ Golden Plover flew west over Beedale, where 10 Common Buzzards were seen. All 6 species of Tit were spotted at the feeders in Forge Valley, 4  Buzzards and a Dipper were seen in Hackness, 5 Buzzards were seen at Broxa, and a Shelduck and 3 Mandarins were on Harwood Dale Lake. A Great Crested Grebe, a Shelduck and 3 Gadwall were in Cornelian Bay, 11 Ringed Plover were at Jackson's Bay, 3 Snipe were at Cromer Point pond, and 14 Skylarks and 8 Meadow Pipits were in stubble north of Scalby Lodge. A flock of 400+ Fieldfares and Redwings (mostly the former) were in a field just south of Wykeham Forest, a female Blackcap was in Falsgrave Park, 35 Pied Wagtails were roosting at Cromer Point Water Treatment works, and 28 Curlew were on Folkton Carr.

9 Teal, a Redshank and 58 Canada Geese were at Johnson's Marsh this morning, and 181 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills. At Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, 23 Tufted Duck, 2 Golodeneye, a Goosander, 2 Woodcock and 18 Bullfinches. A flock of 120+ Fieldfares were near Turkey Carpet, and a Kingfisher was seen on Peasholm main lake. In the field south of Seamer Tip pool there were 5 White-fronted Geese and 12+ Pink-footed Geese, while at the pool itself there were 13 Gadwall, 240 Greylag Geese and 192 Canada Geese. 8 Goldeneye, 9 Great Crested Grebes and a female Stonechat were seen at Wykeham South Lake. 6 Eiders flew north past Long Nab, a Shelduck was at Harwood Dale Lake, 5 Shoveler were at the Flower of May pond, 2 Great Crested Grebes were in South Bay, and 4 adult Mediterranean Gulls were at Holbeck car park. A Chiffchaff was at Folkton sewage farm, 7 Grey Partridge, 14 Stock Doves and 180 Fieldfares were in Flixton, and 250 Jackdaws were in stubble at Cornelian Bay. A Rough-legged Buzzard, 20 Common Buzzards, 2 Red Kites and 2 Goshawks were all seen over Beedale this afternoon.

About 50 Canada Geese flew south over Burniston this morning. 4 Waxwings were seen in the Stepney Drive area, and 5 at Crab Lane, Crossgates in the afternoon. A Marsh Tit was at Burton Riggs, 5 Wigeon were at Seamer Tip pool, a male Peregrine flew east over Star Carr, where there were 20 Fieldfares, and at Seamer Mead there were 60 Fieldfares, a Little Egret, a female Peregrine and 100 Starlings, while 9 Pink-footed Geese flew west. A Redshank and 10 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh, 3 Snipe and 25 Skylarks were in stubble at Scalby Lodge, and a Great Crested Grebe flew south at Long Nab. At Seamer Road Mere there were 2 Little Grebes, 2 Goldeneye, a Teal, a Goosander and 2 Chiffchaffs. A redhead Smew was spotted on the west side of Wykeham South Lake, where there was also a first winter Caspian Gull, 2 Shoveler, a Pochard and 8 Goldeneye. 160 Bramblings were feeding on beech mast at New Close Rigg, Dalby Forest where a Goshawk was also seen. A Red Kite was seen hunting over fields in Scampston adjacent to the lake and A64 lay-by. 60+ Pink-footed Geese flew inland over Dean Road in the early evening, and were heard flying over Gladstone Road area and at Cayton.

The new year kicked off with a sighting of a Hooded Crow in Folkton, plus a Buzzard and 80 Pied Wagtails at Bear Bridge. 5 Waxwings were seen in the morning around B&Q and Dunelm, 4 were seen early afternoon on Stepney Drive before being scattered by a Sparrowhawk, and 4 were in the park behind Plover Gardens. 37 Purple Sandpipers were roosting at the harbour, and at Seamer Road Mere there were 19 Tufted Duck, a Chiffchaff, 2 Goldeneye, a Goosander, 3 Teal and a Coot. At Taylor Way there were 5 Common Snipe, a Jack Snipe and a Water Rail, while a Gadwall and a Wigeon were at Seamer Tip pool. At Folkton sewage farm there was a Chiffchaff, and 44 Pink-footed Geese flew over. 2 Little Egrets were on Cayton Carr, and 2 drake Pochards were at Burton Riggs. 39 Pink-footed Geese were seen flying south over the railway station, and were also seen over the Mount, and 38 (the same/different group?) over Folkton. 3 Snow Buntings were on the Cleveland Way by Scalby Lodge pond, while 13 Ringed Plover and a Kingfisher were at Scalby Mills, where 3 Shelduck flew south. 4 Red-throated Divers and a drake Gadwall were in Cornelian Bay, where a Great Northern Diver was spotted flying past south, and a Marsh Tit and 2 Goldcrests were in the ravine. A mixed flock of Chaffinches and Bramblings was seen at Cockmoor Hall, and a Brambling was in a mixed finch flock on the west side of Wykeham Forest, along with a Fieldfare and a Redwing nearby. A female Blackcap was in Falsgrave Park, a Merlin was seen on Thronton Carrs, and 23 Mandarins were on Hackness Lake. At Long Nab there were 16 Curlew in the field next to the car park, and a Dunlin was in Jackson's Bay.

6 adult Mediterranean Gulls were at Holbeck this morning, including the annual ringed visitor. 21 Curlew were seen at Long Nab, plus 3 Snow Buntings, Meadow Pipits and Skylarks 3 fields north of the observatory. 2 Chiffchaffs were present in Dean Road cemetery, and 3 Waxwings were in a garden on Stepney Drive. At Cloughton Wyke there was a Peregrine, a Redshank and 4 Fulmars, and a pair of Goosanders flew past. A Great Grey Shrike just east of May Moss in Langdale Forest concludes the year's sightings, along with 2 Stonechats, 2 Redpoll and several Crossbills in the same area.
