Saturday 29th February

A Grey Wagtail was spotted in the town centre near the Brunswick this morning. 37 Redshank and 9 Ringed Plovers were in Jackson's Bay, and 2 Dippers were seen at their nest site at Scalby Beck. The Hooded Crow was at Flotmanby again with other corvids. In Cornelian Bay there were 2 Red-throated Divers, a Great Crested Grebe, and a Black-throated Diver which then flew off north. A male Blackcap was in a garden on Valley Road (at least its second week there).

A female Blackcap and a Chiffchaff were in gardens at The Dene this morning. At Harwood Dale Lake there were 52 Wigeon, 2 Teal, 2 Shelduck, 36 Lapwing and 2 Oystercatchers, while at Scalby Mills there was a Lesser Black-backed Gull and in North Bay there were 4 Common Scoter. 64 Pink-footed Geese flew north over Pickering. 22 Wigeon, 15 Teal and a Redshank were present at Johnson's Marsh.

A Hooded Crow was spotted half way between Wykeham and North Moor this morning, and a Raven and a displaying Goshawk were both seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint. 3 Shelduck, 2 Common Scoter and a Goldeneye were all seen flying north past Long Nab. 3 Red Kites were at Beedale and one was also seen at Scampston.

Wednesday 26th February

A Velvet Scoter flew north past Holbeck this morning, while highlights passing Long Nab included 2 female Eiders heading north, 34 Skylarks also flying north and one south-east, and a White-beaked Dolphin seen briefly 3 times, again going north. In the Dalby/Crosscliffe area there were 3 Goshawks and 6 Buzzards, while at Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint 2 Goshawks, 6 Buzzards and 5 Crossbills were seen. About 250 Fieldfares were at Ebberston Moor. A male Blackcap was at a feeder on Briardene Avenue, and the female remains at The Dene. Corn Buntings were again seen feeding on muck heaps between Flotmanby and Muston. 3 Goosanders were at Scalby Mills this afternoon.

42 Oystercatchers and 2 Rock Pipits were in Cayton Bay this morning, plus a Peregrine and Fulmars on the cliffs. Barn Owls were seen at both Seamer Tip and Flixton Carr, 2 Little Egrets were seen at Seamer Mead, and a Peregrine and 300 Fieldfares were seen over Star Carr. The female Blackcap was once again at The Dene, and at Johnson's Marsh there were 2 Redshank and 3 Oystercatchers. 19 Fieldfares and 2 Buzzards were seen from Garth End Road, and 2 Buzzards and an Oystercatcher were at Wykeham South Lake. A Grey Wagtail was in Hackness village.

A Coot, 40 Wigeon and 2 Shelduck were present at Johnson's Marsh this morning, and at Harwood Dale Lake there were 2 Shelduck, 41 Wigeon and 5 Mandarin Ducks. A female Blackcap was spotted again in gardens at The Dene, Peasholm, and a Raven was seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint. The main highlight from Long Nab was a couple of White-beaked Dolphins heading north.

At Willerby Carr this morning there were about 900 Lapwing, 450 Golden Plover, a Dunlin, a Curlew a Kingfisher, 114 Fieldfare, 80 Linnets and 2 Grey Partridge, while at Potter Brompton Carr there were 5 Pink-footed Geese, 9 Wigeon, 25 Teal and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. 34 Wigeon and 24 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh, and 9 Goosanders were at Seamer Road Mere. An adult Mediterranean Gull was with a gull flock in a field off Metes Lane, Seamer and about 300 Fieldfares were in a field south of Seamer Tip.

Early this morning a pair of Red Kites were seen over the A64 at Scampston Park. A Hooded Crow was feeding with Carrion Crows and Jackdaws in a field at Flotmanby, and a second winter Mediterranean Gull was on Cayton Carr. A Wigeon, 21 Gadwall and 2 Tufted Duck were at Seamer Tip pools, and 3 Little Egrets and 23 Curlew were at Flixton sewage works. Wykeham Lakes hosted 4 Gadwall, 17 Tufted Duck, 22 Mallard, 3 Great Crested Grebes and 2 Little Grebes.

In the Seive Dale and Sutherbruff Rigg area of Dalby Forest today 2 or 4 Willow Tits were seen, plus about 150 Bramblings, 150 Chaffinches and 100+ Siskins. 31 Curlew and a Little Egret were near Folkton Bridge this morning, and this afternoon an adult Mediterranean Gull was with 300 Black-headed Gulls on Cayton Bowling Club flash. At Wykeham Lakes there were 14 Cormorants, 2 Wigeon, 5 Gadwall, 6 Goldeneye, 4 Little Grebes and 8 Great Crested Grebes on South Lake, and 5 Pink-footed Geese and 7 Oystercatchers on East Lake.

A female Black cap was in gardens at The Dene, Peasholm this morning, and 3 Goldcrests were at Burton Riggs. In the Swairdale/Newclose Rigg area of Dalby Forest there were about 80 Bramblings and 30+ Crossbills. 60+ Teal, 2 Wigeon and 7 Lapwings were seen at Potter Brompton Carr, and 9 Waxwings were seen briefly with Starlings behind Plover Gardens in the early afternoon. About 25 Corn Buntings were again in a stubble field at Flotmanby.

A Black-throated Diver and a Great Northern Diver were both seen in North Bay this morning. An adult Iceland Gull flew south past Marine Drive, and 3 adult Mediterranean Gulls were at Holbeck car park. In the Adderstone Field/Enchanted Wood area of Dalby Forest there were about 250 Bramblings. A Bittern was seen in flight near Burton Riggs, and at Johnson's Marsh there were 24 Teal, 19 Wigeon and 2 Shelduck.

40 Redwing were seen at Long Lane in Ayton this morning, and 41 Redshank were on the rock armour on North Bay. An Oystercatcher and a Great Crested Grebe were at Burton Riggs, 3 Pink-footed Geese were with a small goose flock on Seamer Mead, and a Little Egret and a Barn Owl were at SeamerTip. A Barn Owl was also seen at Taylor Way, and another at Cayton Carr, where a Merlin was seen in the early afternoon. A Pink-footed Goose was still at Harwood Dale Lake, where there was also a female Mandarin, and a Gannet was in North Bay. In Dalby Forest there was a flock of 200+ Bramblings at the north end of Hawkdale Rigg and another flock of 100-150 at Adderstone Rigg.

2 Barn Owls were seen this morning at the motorcycle track near Seamer Tip, and a male Blackcap was in Falsgrave Park. 2 Whooper Swans flew north over Cornelian Bay, where there were 9 Red-throated Divers and 2 Eiders. A Pink-footed Goose was still at Harwood Dale Lake, and 3 Kittiwakes flew south past Long Nab. A Dipper was in Peasholm Glen and 2 Kingfishers were at the Open Air Theatre this afternoon.

In the Haygate area of Dalby Forest this morning there was a Green Woodpecker, 300+ Siskins, 20 Crossbills, 2 Marsh Tits, 280 Redwings and 50 Fieldfares. A pair of Eiders were spotted near the Sealife Centre, 157 Wigeon were at Scalby Mills, and 7 Purple Sandpipers were in North Bay on the rocks adjacent to the Freddie Gilroy sculpture.

A Red Kite was seen heading south over the A64 at The Marrs near Malton at midday, and this morning a group of 6 Reed Buntings were spotted on blackthorns behind the NYCC depot on the Eastfield industrial estate.

The main highlight at Long Nab this morning was a Black-throated Diver passing by northwards. A Water Rail was at Taylor Way pond, and at Harwood Dale Lake there were 107 Greylag Geese, a Pink-footed Goose, 2 Shelduck, 5 Teal, 4 Mandarin and 44 Wigeon.

At Wykeham South Lake this morning there were 3 Shoveler, 5 Wigeon, 8 Gadwall, 12 Goldeneye, 3 Oystercatchers and a Chiffchaff, while a Great Crested Grebe and 3 Pink-footed Geese were present at Burton Riggs. 3 Twite were seen among about 20 Linnets feeding just south of the car park at Crook Ness, and at Long Nab an adult Mediterranean Gull flew south and a Scandinavian-ringed Rock Pipit was spotted behind the observatory. 2 Willow Tits, a Goshawk, about 150 Redwings and 10+ Crossbills were seen in the Sneverdale area of Dalby Forest.

A Pink-footed Goose, a Water Rail, 4 Little Grebes, 5 Coot, 26 Tufted Duck, a female Goldeneye, and a female Goosander were all seen at Seamer Road Mere this morning. 28 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip pool, and a Goldcrest was spotted at Burton Riggs. Harwood Dale lake hosted 2 Shelduck, 4 Teal and 44 Wigeon, while Johnson's Marsh had a Mute Swan, 2 Shelduck and 18 Teal.

2 Shelduck, 31 Wigeon, 42 Lapwing, a Pink-footed Goose and 150+ Redwing were seen at Harwood Dale this morning, while 4 Goshawks were displaying over Jugger Howe Moor. The Water Rail was still at the Open Air Theatre, a Rock Pipit was on roof tops on Aberdeen Walk, and a Great Northern Diver flew south past Long Nab. At Wykeham South Lake there were 6 Pochard, 5 Great Crested Grebes, 46 Greylag Geese, 85 Canada Geese, 4 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 4 Tufted Duck and 29 Coot, while on East Lake there were 8 Goldeneye. A Mediterranean Gull was spotted flying over Taylor Way towards Burton Riggs in the early afternoon, and another was at Wykeham East Lake. A Red Kite was seen drifting south over Hovingham Drive, and on Folkton Carr there were 32 Curlew and 50+ Redwing.

Highlights from Long Nab today include 2 Shoveler, 258 Gannets, 171 Golden Plover and 86 Knot, all passing southwards.  In Wykeham Forest today 8 Crossbills were seen, plus a huge mixed flock of finches, mainly Siskins but also several Redpolls, Greenfinches and Goldfinches. 27 Purple Sandpipers were roosting at the harbour this afternoon, and a Lesser Black-backed Gull was at Scalby Mills.

Throughout the day there have been reports of Pink-footed Geese heading north. A Chiffchaff and 3 Treecreepers were seen at Burton Riggs this morning, and a Redshank, a Water Rail and a Kingfisher were round the back of the Open Air Theatre. The pair of Peregrines and lots of Fulmars were seen on the Castle headland, from where there were also good views of at least 2 Porpoises. At Wykeham South Lake there was a Water Rail, 8 Goldeneye, 24 Redwing and a single Whooper Swan, while 2 Whooper Swans also were seen flying north over the fields between Irton and Racecourse Road. Seamer Road Mere hosted 4 Little Grebes, a Coot, 2 Water Rails, 33 Tufted Duck, 3 Goosanders and a Goldeneye, while at Hackness Lake there were 32 Mandarins, 8 Little Grebes, 2 Gadwall, 6 Tufted Duck and 2 Willow Tits. A Goosander and 7 Skylarks flew north past Long Nab this morning, while 28 more Skylarks flew south. 2 Shelduck, 15 Teal and 3 Snipe were at Johnson's Marsh, and a Hooded Crow was with Carrion Crows south of Cromer Point this afternoon. Also this afternoon: Scalby Mills: 202 Wigeon;  Peasholm Park: 52 Mallard, 23 Tufted Duck;  Jackson's Bay: 71 Oystercatchers, 16 Ringed Plover, 5 Purple Sandpipers, 16 Turnstones, 48 Redshanks, Mediterranean Gull, 4 Meadow Pipits and a pair of Stonechats;  Cromer Point pond: 2 Snipe;  Scalby Lodge area: 55 Curlew and 6 Skylarks.

A Manx Shearwater, 6 Shelduck and 2 skeins of Pink-footed Geese (90+78 individuals) passed Long Nab this morning heading north, while 2 Brent Geese passed by southwards, and a Chiffchaff was present at Crook Ness. 86 Pink-footed Geese were also seen heading north over West Ayton and a skein of about 80 (the same one?) were seen at a similar time over Harwood Dale. At Wykeham South Lake there were 2 Redwings, 9 Teal, a Grey Heron, a Shelduck, a Kestrel, 7 Goldeneye and 5 Great Crested Grebes, plus 2 Egyptian Geese near the new workings. A Great Crested Grebe was at Burton Riggs, and at Seamer Tip a Barn Owl was seen by the 3 ponds and 3 Pink-footed Geese were in the field by the bridge. Good numbers of Siskins and Crossbills were seen near Standing Stones Rigg, where a Green Woodpecker was heard. A Water Rail and a Kingfisher were again at the Open Air Theatre, plus a Greenfinch. 2 Purple Sandpipers were spotted on the sea wall below the Sea Life Centre. A Merlin was hunting over Beedale this afternoon, and a Goshawk was displaying over the forest, viewed from Hilla Green bridge where there were 2 Crossbills. At Harwood Dale Lake there were 19 Lapwings, 47 Wigeon and a single Pink-footed Goose. About 100 Linnets and 20 Greenfinches were in a sheep field at Suffield, a female Blackcap was in Hutton Buscel, and a male Stonechat was by the Long Nab observatory.

A Willow Tit and a Kingfisher were seen in Forge Valley this morning, along with several signs of Otter. A Great Crested Grebe was at Burton Riggs, 3 Pink-footed Geese were at Seamer Tip pool, and 2 Little Egrets and a Kingfisher were at Seamer Mead. At Seamer Road Mere there were 4 Little Grebes, 2 Coot, 2 Teal, 28 Tufted Duck, a drake Goldeneye, 3 Goosanders and a Lesser Black-backed Gull.

The Waxwing was still hanging around Derwent Avenue today. 34 Curlew were near Scalby Lodge pond, a Water Rail was again at the Open Air Theatre, and 2 Dippers were seen on Scalby Beck near the Old Scalby Mills pub. 31 Corn Buntings were spotted on roadside wires near the Flotmanby pull in.
