Wednesday 2nd July 2014

An interesting day with the first meaningful signs of Autumn.
Passage was steady with the first good Swift count of the year and already larger than any count from last year! On the move (south unless stated) were 2 Fulmar north, 5 Manx Shearwater north, 3 Cormorant, 4 Grey Heron north, 2 Mallard, 2 Common Scoter, 1 Knot north, 3 Curlew + 27 in and west + 39 north, 1 adult Mediterranean Gull north, 11 Black-headed Gull + 16 in and west and 56 north, 8 Common Gull + 2 north, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull + 2 north, 1 Great Black-backed Gull, 12 Sandwich Tern + 20 north, 1 Puffin + 9 north, 802 Swift + 14 north, 7 Sand Martin, 11 Swallow, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 41 Starling and 7 Linnet.
Elsewhere what was probably a different Mediterranean Gull was at Holbeck, the first juvenile Wheatear was seen at Wykeham South Lake where 5 Egyptian Geese, 15 Tufted Duck, 4 Oystercatcher and 3 Little Ringed Plover were also seen and 8 Grey Heron were on Johnson's Marsh.
