Monday 30th December

 The Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour mouth. Two Red-throated Divers off Marine Drive. A Little Egret on a small pond at Woodland Ravine. Two drake Pochard at Peasholm Park. 27 Pink-footed Geese with the mixed Greylag/Canada Goose flock at Salt Pans Lane, Cloughton. A drake Pochard at Throxenby Mere. Goosander at Burton Riggs. Two Snow Geese were seen at Scampston Park lake before flying off with Greylag Geese.

 The Red-necked Grebe was still at Wykeham East Lake. 27 Crossbills, including a mating pair at Wykeham Forest, 8 Siskins and a Marsh Tit. A Raven near the Raptor Viewpoint. Ten Snow Buntings at Long Nab, a Gadwall and 41 Pink-footed Geese flew north. A Lapwing at Cromer Point Water Treatment. 60+ Wigeon at Scalby Mills. Two Pochard at Seamer tip pool. Two Great White Egrets at Seamer Mead, 20 Grey Partridges and 1000 Woodpigeons near the tip. 10 Pink-footed Geese Herdborough Farm. Little Egret Pasture Lane, Seamer.

Saturday 28th December

 Duck movement was the feature of today. Seven species were recorded past Long Nab, including 3 Pintail (seen later at Scalby Mills), 8 Gadwall, and a Goldeneye. Three Pink-footed Geese were feeding in fields SW of Crook Ness, plus a skein of c80 flew high north. A pair of Shoveler were seen at Johnson's Marsh, plus a pair at Throxenby Mere where there was also two Pochard. Fifteen Ringed Plovers at Scalby Mills, plus a Teal with the Wigeon flock. 20 Pink-footed Geese flew SE over Stepney. 100 Fieldfare/Redwing and 2 Pink-footed Geese at Coverdale Moor, 25 Crossbills in nearby forest. A male Mandarin at Staindale Lake, Dalby Forest plus 6 Teal, 3 Little Grebes. Good numbers of Crossbills at Jerry Noddle and a single Goshawk.

 A first-winter Caspian Gull, Shoveler, Teal, Tufted Duck at Scalby Mills. Two Peregrines at Marine Drive. Along Long Causeway Road: 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 31 Blackbirds, 12 Robins, 13 Great Tits, 9 Coal Tits, 8 Blue Tits, 2 Marsh Tits.

 The Great Northern Diver was still at the harbour. Two Ravens at Ravenscar. 400 Woodpigeons at Burniston Road Recycling. A Peregrine near the Toll House at Marine Drive. A Common Buzzard moved NW over North Bay. 60 Pink-footed Geese SW over Cloughton, a Fulmar on the cliffs at Cloughton Wyke. Two Jays at Cloughton.  In the Allerston/Wilton/Marishes area: Merlin, 5 Little Egrets, 3 Pink-footed Geese, 4 Whooper Swans, 107 Fieldfare, 34 Redwing. In Dalby Forest (Nabgate to Wilton Heights): Goshawk, 35 Fieldfare, 20 Redwing.

YOUTH MEMBERSHIP

 Membership of Scarborough Birders is FREE for under 25 year olds.

Normally a yearly subscription of £15. We are keen to encourage a younger membership to the group.
Members receive up to the minute news of birds around the Scarborough district via Whatsapp.
Members are involved in local conservation initiatives, participate in bird surveys, and support each other to increase the understanding of the local birdlife.
It is hoped to hold birding walks locally for younger members (+ parents if under 18) to help their identification skills.

We have a small number of Youth Members already. Why not consider joining.

 One Snow Bunting still in the stubble at Long Nab. A Stonechat at Cromer Point. At Low Marishes: 5 Whooper Swans, 9 Pink-footed Geese, 20 Redwings, 50 Fieldfare. A "redhead" Goosander at Burton Riggs. The Great White Egret was still at Sykes Farm pond, Burniston this afternoon (off Lindhead Road). Snainton Ings held 160 Pink-footed Geese, 200 Fieldfare and 120 Redwing. At Harwood Dale Lake: 48 Wigeon, 15 Teal, 204 Lapwing. In fields east of Wykeham Lakes: 45+ Fieldfare, 6 Grey Partridge, 4 Reed Buntings, 17 Tree Sparrows. 235+ Wigeon at Scalby Mills. The Great Northern Diver still at the harbour.

A Shelduck on the flash at Saltpans Lane, Cloughton. A Blackcap in a Newby garden plus a Chiffchaff and 10 Long-tailed Tits in a Stepney Road garden. 70 Pink-footed Geese west over Thornton Carrs. A Great White Egret at Sykes Farm Pond, Burniston. Seven Curlew Burniston. At Potter Brompton Carr: 16 Grey Partridge, 3 Egyptian Geese, 440 Pink-footed Geese, 3 Great White Egrets, 45 Stock Doves.

 A Red-necked Grebe flew north past Long Nab this morning, one Snow Bunting in the stubble there. The Great Northern Diver again around the harbour where there were 5 Shags and 5 Cormorants, plus 15 Turnstones. Five Fulmars back on Castle Cliffs. Along the Cinder Track (Burniston to Cloughton): 17 Blackbirds, 13 Redwing, 3 fieldfare, 5 Song Thrush, 3 Brambling and 12 Chaffinches. The Red-necked Grebe still at Wykeham East Lake, 4 drake Pochard still at the Water Sports Lake.

 An adult Little Gull at Wykeham East Lake in the morning later moved to feed in arable fields to the east with Black-headed Gulls. The long staying Red-necked Grebe was still on East Lake, also a Green Sandpiper. Also at the lakes complex today: Egyptian Goose with Canadas at the Water Sports Lake, 54 Gadwall, 40+ Teal, 5 Wigeon, 4 Pochard, 22 Goldeneye, 2 Water Rails (heard), 2 Snipe, a Woodcock, 4 Fieldfare, 2 Chiffchaffs (Causeway Lake). A Goosander and Grey Wagtail at Burton Riggs. Just one Snow Bunting in the stubble field at Long Nab, 9+ northern argentatus Herring Gulls flew south.

 Eighteen Snow Buntings were in the stubble at Long Nab, 3 Shelduck flew north. At Seamer Road Mere: 3 Little Grebes, 76 Mallard, 2 Gadwall, 39 Tufted Ducks, Goosander, 21 Mute Swans, 65 Moorhens, 56 Coot, Water Rail, and Kingfisher. An Egyptian Goose, imm Whooper Swan with the Mutes south of Wykeham Lakes. The Great Northern Diver again in South Bay.

 A Great Northern Diver again near the harbour and a Whooper Swan south there. Kingfisher again at the Open Air Theatre. A cream crown Marsh Harrier, Little Egret, 250 Lapwing, and approximately 60 each of Redwing and Fieldfare at Low Marishes. 95 Pink-footed Geese NW over Allerston and a single Pink-footed Geese with the feral goose flock at Burton Riggs.

 A Great Northern Diver was at the harbour mouth and three Fulmar on Castle Headland. A Great White Egret at Binnington Carr. 15 Pink footed Geese at East Heslerton and a Marsh Tit at Burton Riggs. A Snow Bunting was in the stubble field at Long Nab and 59 Oystercatcher, one Purple Sandpiper, 17 Turnstone, six Curlew and five Redshank at Burniston Bay.

 The drake Goosander was again at Peasholm Park lake, and the Dipper, Kingfisher, and Grey Wagtail in the Glen. A Great Northern Diver in South Bay (just off the harbour), also nine Mediterranean Gulls (6 adults, 2 x 1cy, 1x 2cy), 14 Common Scoters. Three Goosanders at Burton Riggs plus a Chiffchaff. Barn Owl near Seamer tip. 20 Ringed Plovers at Scalby Mills. 58 Pink-footed Geese flew west over Allerston. Kingfisher at the Open Air Theatre. Two Little Egrets, Kingfisher, 150 Common Gulls at Folkton Water Treatment plant.  At Potter Brompton Carr: 3 Green Sandpipers (R Hertford), 534 Pink-footed Geese, Great White Egret, 393 Teal, 5 Little Egrets.

 A Slavonian Grebe was in the harbour mouth up to early afternoon. Two Great Northern Divers flew north together off Marine Drive. The drake Goosander was still at Peasholm Park lake, and Dipper in Peasholm Glen. A Great White Egret at Keasbeck Hill Farm pond, Harwood Dale, with others at Cayton Carrs and Star Carr. Four Little Egrets at Cayton Carrs plus one at Star Carr where there were 7 Grey Partridge, 5 Fieldfares, 3 Snipe, and 17 Teal. At the Gristhorpe bay high tide roost; 287 Curlew, 164 Redshank, 118 Oystercatchers, 72 Purple Sandpipers, 32 Turnstones, Ringed Plover, and Bar-tailed Godwit.

 The two Shore Larks were back in the stubble at Long Nab this morning, also still four Snow Buntings. An influx of 30 Blackbirds, plus a Chiffchaff there. Wildfowl movement past; 54 Teal, 2 Wigeon, 2 Shelducks, 3 Eiders, and a Common Scoter. Some Pink-footed Goose movement with 300+ south-east at Malton, and 200 south over Allerston. The Red-necked Grebe still at Wykeham East Lake, Kingfisher at the zip-wire lake. A Goosander at Seamer Road Mere, plus 3 at Burton Riggs. A grake Goosander still at Peasholm Park lake.

 Four Snow Buntings were still at Long Nab. A drake Goosander at Peasholm Park Lake, plus the Dipper in Peasholm Glen. A Woodcock at the Motorcycle track near Seamer tip, nearby Burton Riggs produced an adult Little Gull, and 4 Goosanders. Near Wilton were 40 Yellowhammers, and 10 Reed Buntings. Two Great White Egrets, and a Little Egret by the River Derwent floods at Yedingham. 40+ Oystercatchers on Northstead School playing fields. 300+ Jackdaws in a pre-roost gathering at Wykeham East Lake. In the Brompton ponds area; 21 Gadwall, 10 Tufted Ducks, 3 Little Grebes, Little Egret, 60 Fieldfare, 20 Redwings. At Potter Brompton Carr: 483 Teal, Water Rail, Great White Egret.

 The two Shore Larks were back in the stubble field at Long Nab, also 4 Snow Buntings. A Little Auk, 3 Shelducks, Eider, and 44 Red-throated Divers flew north. A different Little Auk flew north past Marine Drive at midday, plus one close in off there mid-afternoon. Five Goosanders were at Burton Riggs. A Snow Bunting was in stubble at Cromer Point. The Dipper still at Peasholm Glen, a drake Goosander on Peasholm Parlk lake. The Red-necked Grebe was still at Wykeham East Lake, also at the lakes complex a fem Shoveler, 28 Goldeneye, 4 Pochard, 3 Wigeon, 19 Teal. The Great Northern Diver and 7 Turnstones, and a Purple Sandpiper at the harbour. An Egyptian Goose, Great White Egret, 3 Little Egrets, Marsh Harrier at Potter Brompton Carr.

Tuesday 10th December

 Eight Little Auks flew north past Long Nab by 11am, also one north past Marine Drive (likely one of the eight). Sadly one was picked up injured on the Cleveland Way and is now with Whitby Wildlife Rescue. Another Little Auk was picked up exhausted in a Crossgates garden. It was checked over and successfully released at the coast. Two Little Auks were in the harbour in the morning. A Goosander at Ellerburn. An Egyptian Goose at Wykeham Lakes, also 2 Pochard. The Great Northern Diver ventured into the harbour, also a Purple Sandpiper and Kingfisher there. Three Snow Buntings were in the stubble at Long Nab.

 Strong NE winds continued, bringing some interesting seabird movements. Little Auks featured along the coast; 172 past Long Nab, 104 past White Nab, 35 past the harbour mid-morning, and up to 11 around the harbour/South Bay earlier. A Great Northern Diver still at the harbour, plus a Slavonian Grebe in South Bay.  Other seabirds included a Storm Petrel off White Nab, 4 Great Skuas off there also. Long Nab highlights included 38 Eiders, Long-tailed Duck, 3 Manx Shearwaters, Red-necked Grebe, 492 Kittiwakes, 20 Puffins, Black-throated Diver, 2 Great Northern Divers. Two Snow Buntings in the stubble there. A Great White Egret at Willerby Carr, plus one in Forge Valley.  At Low Marishes; 840 Lapwing, Barn Owl, 340 Fieldfare, 80 Redwing. The Red-necked Grebe, 42 Teal, 5 Great Crested Grebes at Wykeham East Lake. At the Water Sports Lake; 18 Goldeneyes, Pochard, 3 Wigeon, 19 Teal, 3 Great Crested Grebes.

 Storm force northerlies displaced many seabirds today. A Long-tailed Duck was in the harbour, eventually leaving north. A Little Auk in the harbour mouth, and 3 Purple Sandpipers on the lighthouse steps. Highlights past Long Nab were 31 Little Auks (30N, 1S), 2 Puffins, 6 Manx Shearwaters, 6 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Great Skuas, 110 Gannets, 148 Kittiwakes, Knot, and 3 Dunlin. The Dipper still in Peasholm Glen. A Green Sandpiper, Snipe and Little Egret at Thornton Carrs. Three Goosanders still at Burton Riggs.

 A Little Auk off Marine Drive was later seen off the harbour mouth. A female type Black Redstart at North Bay near the toilet block at midday flew towards the Castle Headland. A Kingfisher again at The Open Air Theatre. Great Northern Diver and Shag in the harbour mouth. A male Snow Bunting in the stubble at Long Nab, a late Sandwich Tern flew north (latest district record by three days). At Potter Brompton Carr (from Haybridge); Great White Egret, 2 Little Egrets, cc Marsh Harrier, 11 Shoveler, 180 Teal, and 90 Wigeon. 50 Greylag Geese, 30 Canada Geese, 3 Teal, 14 Moorhens Cloughton Town Pond. Three Goosanders still at Burton Riggs. 11 Turnstones, 5 Cormorants at the harbour. Four Fulmars on Castle Cliffs. 56 Teal, 6 Wigeon Johnson's Marsh.

 The Red-necked Grebe was still at Wykeham East Lake. Highlights at the lakes complex included 105 Pink-footed Geese (flying west), 16 Goldeneye, 2 Water Rails, Jack Snipe, 5 Common Snipe, 300 Lapwing, 13 Little Grebes, 32 Cormorants, Little Egret, and Chiffchaff. Two Ravens were over Dalby Forest. two Dippers and Little Egret at Thornton le Dale beck. A female Shoveler at Seamer Road Mere. 55 Common Scoters at Cayton Bay. A Mediterranean Gull at Holbeck car park. Two Snow Buntings at Long Nab, a Puffin flew north there. The Great Northern Diver was still off the harbour. Two Peregrines on Castle Cliffs.  The Red-necked Grebe remains at Wykeham East Lake. Around the lakes complex were a Pochard, 11 Goldeneye, and 9 Tufted Ducks. Two Kingfishers at Throxenby Mere, one at Marine Drive. A Goldeneye and Goosander on the sea off Marine Drive. A Great Northern Diver in the harbour mouth. The Dipper still at Peasholm Glen. Three Goosanders at Burton Riggs. Good numbers of Nuthatches reported from the feeders at Forge Vally, 4-5 today. At Potter Brompton Carr: Cetti's Warbler, Great White Egrets, 300 Pink-footed Geese, 20 Shoveler, Pintail, 312 Teal, 156 Wigeon, 520 Lapwing, and a Willow Tit.

A Great Northern Diver off the harbour lighthouse, 16 Common Scoters in South Bay. A male Stonechat on rocks by the Toll House. Two Goosanders at Burton Riggs. At Seamer Road Mere; Goldeneye, Shoveler, 6 Gadwall, and 6 Little Grebes. A Purple Sandpiper on East Pier at the harbour, plus one on rocks at Marine Drive.

Six Bewick's Swans flew east over Dalby Forest at midday. The 2 Shore Larks were still at Long Nab, also 8 Snow Buntings in the stubble there. A Woodcock was new in. Nine Ringed Plovers at Scalby Mills, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits at Cayton Bay. The Slavonian Grebe was in Cornelian Bay, moving towards Cayton Bay. Also there were a Velvet Scoter, 13 Common Scoters, Grey Plover and a Puffin. A Great Northern Diver left south.

 Two Shore Larks were found late morning in the stubble by the car park at Long Nab. Also 16+ Snow Buntings there. Eight Little Egrets at Folkton Bridge. The Dipper was still at Peasholm Glen. 35 Common Scoter in South Bay. The Red-necked Grebe was still on Wykeham East Lake, a Chiffchaff by the hide, and a total of 7 Goldeneye, 7 Great Crested Grebes at the lakes complex. A Wigeon and six singing Robins at Burton Riggs. At Potter Brompton Carr (from Haybridge); Great White Egret, Little Egret, Shoveler, 70 Teal, 60 Wigeon, and 100 Lapwings.
