Tuesday 28th July

There were 2 Little Egrets at Johnson's Marsh early this morning, and another one at Brompton ponds. 100+ House Martins and some Swifts were flying around the top north-west corner of Woodlands Cemetery. A female Honey Buzzard flew low and west at the Mill Inn in Harwood Dale, and 3 Peregrines were seen over the cliffs at Cloughton Newlands. A juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Little Ringed Plovers and a Dunlin were seen at Wykeham East Lake. At Long Nab 6 Crossbills flew south, the Hen Harrier was seen, and a Grasshopper Warbler was again singing at the scrape. The pale male Honey Buzzard was seen from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint this afternoon, plus a Goshawk and about 30 Crossbills. A Mandarin with a well-grown brood of 5 young was seen in Troutsdale. This evening a family of Sparrowhawks and a Treecreeper were seen at Manor Road Cemetery. There were fewer small gulls in South Bay this afternoon - only 4 Mediterranean Gulls, plus a juvenile heading south offshore. 28 Sandwich Terns, 47 Oystercatchers, 32 Curlew, a Whimbrel and a Teal were in Cornelian Bay, and a Red-throated Diver was in South Bay.
