An adult Roseate Tern was enjoyed by many at Scalby Mills on our evening Scarborough Birders' meet. Also there 20 Sandwich, and 15 Common Terns plus an Arctic Skua offshore.  At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Shelduck, Shoveler, 3 Ruff, 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Yellow Wagtails, 60 Goldfinches. 18 Oystercatchers, Curlew and Common Sandpiper in Jackson's Bay. A Green Sandpiper at Harwood Dale Lake. A Whinchat at Reasty Bank ridge, Broxa Forest. Two Swifts at Scampston Hall park. The Osprey again in the Ellerburn valley / Sand Dale area of Dalby Forest, also 5 Willow Tits. Little Egret, 3 Whimbrel, 8 Siskin south at Long Nab.

Two Caspian Gulls (juv + 1cy) were at Seamer Road Mere, also 41 Tufted Ducks, 35 Gadwall, 5 Teal, and 6 Cormorants (at least 4 sinensis race). Six Swifts were at Ravenscar plus one over Ramshill. A Bar-tailed Godwit in South Bay, and Arctic Skua offshore there. Two Sooty Shearwaters flew south off Marine Drive. A diver sp. flew west over Crossgates mid-morning with 20 Cormorants. Two Shoveler, 18 Teal, Ruff and Dunlin Wykeham East Lake. One Osprey seen in the Ellerburn valley / Sand Dale area of Dalby Forest, also two Hobby and 3 Ravens.  A Yellow Wagtail at Harwood Dale Lake. A Hobby chasing Linnets at Cromer Point. At Long Nab; a juvenile Caspian Gull on rocks, Whimbrel south, and juvenile Merlin lingering near the Observatory. 24 Turnstone in Jackson's Bay. At Potter Brompton Carr: 4 Shelduck, 3 Shoveler, Wigeon, 37 Teal, Green Sandpiper, 6 Ruff, 5 Marsh Harriers, Sedge Warbler, 6 Yellow Wagtails.

A Whimbrel in Gristhorpe Bay. Two Green Sandpipers at Harwood Dale Lake. A Swift flew south at Long Nab plus one feeding over Oliver's Mount. Two Ruff and 2 Snipe at Wykeham East Lake. A Peregrine at Castle Cliffs. At Potter Brompton Carr: Wigeon, Ringed Plover, Green Sandpiper, 4 Ruff, 2 Great White Egrets, 2 Marsh Harriers, 3 Sedge Warblers.

 One Osprey again in the Ellerburn valley / Sand Dale area of Dalby Forest. Two Egyptian Geese, 3 Ruff, and a Dunlin at Wykeham East Lake. Four Greenshank in Jackson's Bay plus a Golden Plover flew south. A Whinchat at Scalby Lodge. Three juvenile Goshawks entertaining observers for prolonged periods from Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint, also 3 Raven. A Hobby flew west at Troutsdale. Green Sandpiper at Brompton Ponds plus Kingfisher. Pintail, Wigeon and Whimbrel north past Long Nab. A Greenshank flew over Osgodby.

 The two Ospreys were again in the Ellerburn/Sand Dale area of Dalby Forest. Two Red Kites over Staintondale. Five Swifts SW over Burniston. Six Whimbrel, 4 Swifts flew south past Long Nab, a Wheatear was near the observatory, and Pied Flycatcher at Hundale. Three Ruff and a Dunlin at Wykeham East Lake. Three Marsh Harriers, Ringed Plover, Great White Egret, Swift and Sedge Warbler at Potter Brompton Carr.

Tuesday 26th August

 A Greenshank flew in off the sea at Long Nab, also 2 Whimbrel south, a Puffin and juvenile Mediterranean Gull north. A Whimbrel flew south over Peasholm. a ringtail Hen Harrier flew west over Troutsdale mid-afternoon, also 2 juvenile Goshawks over. At Potter Brompton Carr: Ringed Plover, 2 Green Sandpipers, 9 Ruff, Marsh Harrier.

 In the Gristhorpe Bay area: juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, Little Egret, 2 Wheatears , Spotted Flycatcher, Lesser Whitethroat and Swift. A Redstart at Scalby Beck. Juvenile Yellow-legged Gull at Wykeham East Lake, also Snipe, Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Greenshank. Five Marsh Harriers and Grenshank at Potter Brompton Carr. Highlights past Long Nab included a Merlin south, Marsh Harrier in off the sea, Little Egret west, and 3 Swifts south. A family group of 5 Spotted Flycatchers at Wrench Green.

 Two Ospreys still in the Ellerburn valley. Four Willow tits in Sand Dale. Two Dippers at Thornton-le-Dale beck. At Potter Brompton Carr: 18 Golden Plovers (over), 15 Snipe, 8 Ruff, Dunlin, Great White Egret, Red Kite, 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Marsh Tits. Highlights past Long Nab in 12 hours (6 observers): Little Tern, 300 Common Terns, Caspian Gull, 2 Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Great & 12 Arctic Skuas, Cuckoo (flew south). A Wheatear in the fields there. Little Owls recorded at Cloughton Wyke and Long Nab.

 An adult Long-tailed Skua flew north close past Long Nab, also 4 Arctic Skuas, and Arctic Tern past. The high tide roost at Gristhorpe Bay held 10 Herons, 35 Cormorants, 104 Oystercatchers, 7 Turnstone, 6 Redshank, Greenshank, 2 Curlews. In the nearby fields a Wheatear, 10 Whitethroats, Lesser Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, 132 Goldfinches. Whimbrel and Hobby over Osgodby. An Osprey again in the Ellerburn valley, also 19 Herons and 3 Marsh Tits. 19 Mistle Thrushes in stubble at Long Causeway Road, 8 Gadwall, 5 Teal on Causeway Lake. At Potter Brompton Carr: 35 Teal, 7 Swifts, 25 Snipe, 3 Green Sandpipers, 8 Ruff, 4 Marsh Harriers, Cetti's Warbler.

 Two Ospreys were in the Ellerburn valley, also Common Sandpiper and Kingfisher at the trout farm. Two Little Egrets, Marsh Harrier, 6 Stock Doves at Wykeham East Lake, 2 Reed Warblers and 6 Sand Martins at Trout Lake, another Reed Warbler at Predator Lake. Highlights past Long Nab included 3 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Little Egrets, 5 Ruff, 2 Whimbrel, 3 Red-throated Divers. Swift reports were one over Wrench Green, 2 south at Long Nab, and 3 south over Burniston. Willow Tit and Spotted Flycatcher at Haygate, Dalby Forest.

 The Spotted Redshank still at Potter Brompton Carr, also 9 Ruff,  5 Green Sandpipers and 8 Marsh Harriers (9+ individuals over last two days). A Marsh Tit in a Stepney garden. Highlights past Long Nab: 2 Wigeon, Balearic Shearwater, 26 Sooty Shearwaters, 63 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Arctic Skuas, adult pale Pomarine Skua, 5 Great Skuas, 14 Arctic Terns. A Great White Egret, 2 Shelducks at Wykeham East Lake. A Marsh Tit on Lightfoot's Lane. An Osprey again in the Ellerburn valley.

 The Spotted Redshank was still at Potter Brompton Carr, also there eight Marsh Harriers, 2 Ringed Plover, 4 Green Sandpipers, 16 Ruff, 2 Dunlin and a Red Kite. Six Ruff, 2 Green Sandpipers, Common Sandpiper, 12 Coot Wykeham East Lake. A Greenshank at Ellerburn trout farm. A Little Egret, Common Sandpiper at Brompton Ponds. A Yellow Wagtail at South Moor farm, Dalby. Past Long Nab in the morning were 4 Sooty & 21 Manx Shearwaters, 5 Arctic Skuas, a Great Skua, Shoveler and 4 Arctic Terns.

 A juvenile Spotted Redshank was a new arrival at Potter Brompton Carr. Also there were 16 Ruff, Greenshank, 5 Green Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Dunlin, Great White Egret, and 2 Marsh Harriers. Single Turtle Doves near Silpho and The Mill Inn, Harwood Dale. Highlights past Long Nab included a drake Scaup, Wigeon, 6 Arctic Skuas, 4 Great Skuas, 2 Caspian Gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull, and a Mediterranean Gull. Two Snipe, 15 Teal at Harwood Dale Lake. 18 Gadwall at Seamer Road Mere. The Osprey was seen again at Ellerburn trout farm late afternoon. Three Dunlin at Scalby Mills. At least 4 Willow Tits (2 different areas) and 4 Marsh Tits at Wrench Green, plus a Hobby over. 25+ Mistle Thrushes in a field at Hackness.

 At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Water Rails (ad + juv), Ringed Plover, 5 Green Sandpipers, Greenshank, 8 Ruff, Dunlin, Great White Egret, 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Willow Tits, Cetti's Warbler. Seven Bar-tailed Godwits in Jackson's Bay. In the Cromer Point/Stile Scrub area: 2 juvenile Caspian Gulls, and a Grasshopper Warbler in the cliff top scrub. A Greenshank over Wykeham East Lake, also Little Egret and 2 Kingfishers. Highlights past Long Nab included 244 Teal, 713 Common Scoter, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits, Knot, 4 Arctic Terns, 2 Yellow-legged Gulls, 3 Arctic Skuas, 4 Great Skuas, 3230 Gannets.

A Willow Tit in an Allerston garden. Common Sandpiper at Throxenby Mere. 11 Greenfinch in a Cayton garden. A Mediterranean Gull at Scalby Mills. Four Ravens over Troutsdale.

 In Jackson's Bay: 5 Sanderling, 3 Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers, 5 Ringed Plover, plus a Greenshank flew south. At Ellerburn: 2 Kingfishers, Little Grebe (+ 2 chicks), Tree Pipit, Spotted Flycatcher, 39 Siskin, Grey Wagtail, and a Woodcock flushed by a Sparrowhawk. Highlights past Long Nab included 2 Sooty Shearwaters, Little Gull (juv), 2 Caspian Gulls, 3 Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Arctic and 2 Great Skuas, 112 Common Terns. At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Greenshank, 2 Ruff, 2 Little Egrets, Great White Egret, Marsh harrier, Red Kite. Aa adult Roseate Tern flew north past Marine Drive with Common Terns.

At Potter Brompton Carr: 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Turnstone, Common Sandpiper, 5 Green Sandpipers, 3 Greenshank, 2 Ruff, Great White Egret, 2 Marsh Harriers, Red Kite. A Corn Bunting at Crook Ness. 15 Swifts over Scalby Beck.

 A Hobby was chasing Linnets at Harwood Dale Lake. Single Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls moved south past Long Nab, 3 Whimbrel flew north. A Common Sandpiper in Jackson's Bay. 76 Swallows on wires at Burniston. Five Common Sandpipers and a Greenshank at Throxenby Mere in the evening.

 The Scarborough Birders event at the Mill Inn failed to score any Turtle Doves but the beer was good!

A Great White Egret and Little Egret at Wykeham East Lake. 25 Common Scoter settled in North Bay. A Little Egret at Scalby Mills. Common Sandpiper and 2 Mandarins at Harwood Dale Lake. A Corn Bunting at Jackson's Bay. A Willow Tit in Cornelian Bay. Highlights past Long Nab were 7 Shelducks, 69 Teal, 517 Common Scoters, 54 Whimbrel, 200 Common Terns and 10 Shags.

Two Mandarins at Causeway Lake, Wykeham Lakes. At Potter Brompton Carr: Little Ringed Plover, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Greenshank, 6 Green Sandpipers, 4 Ruff, 2 Dunlin, 11 Snipe, 3 Marsh Harriers, Great White Egret, 2 juvenile Willow Tits, and 2 Crossbills flew north. Three Goshawks and a family party of 4 Ravens from the Wykeham Forest Raptor Viewpoint. In Jackson's bay: 2 Ringed Plovers, 12 Redshank, Knot, 3 Dunlin, 40 Common Terns, 25 Sandwich Terns, Little Egret.

 At Potter Brompton Carr: Wood Sandpiper, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plovers, Little Ringed Plover, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, Greenshank, 5 Ruff, Dunlin, Great White Egret, 2 Marsh Harriers. A juvenile Mediterranean Gull flycatching with 200 Black-headed Gulls over Scalby Ness, also 5 Common Terns. Two Little Egrets and a Common Sandpiper at Scalby Mills. Highlights past Long Nab: 2 Shelduck, Marsh Harrier, Red Kite, 2 Knot, Mediterranean Gull, Red-throated Diver, 238 Swallows, 7 Rock Pipits, and a Willow Tit moving south along the cliffs. Two Whimbrels on the rocks below the Observatory. In Jackson's Bay: 2 Knot, 2 Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Ringed Plovers, 50 Common Terns, and Kingfisher. 31 Swifts south over Burniston. A Raven over Troutsdale.

 A Garganey at Potter Brompton Carr, also 2 Water Rails, Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, 26 Black-tailed Godwits, 11 Snipe, 4 Green Sandpipers, 4 Ruff, 2 Great hite Egrets, 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Red Kites, 4 Stonechats. Highlights past Long Nab included the years first Balearic Shearwater, 22 Arctic Terns, 752 Common Terns, and a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull. Ten Yellow Wagtails were feeding in the fields. A cream crown Marsh Harrier flew south over Gristhorpe village. A Little Egret at Wykeham East Lake. Spotted Flycatchers at the Raptor Viewpoint car park and Silpho, plus two juvenile Goshawks over Wykeham Forest. 40+ Common Terns in North Bay.

 Ringed Plover, 2 Sanderling, Dunlin, 30 Common Terns, 40 Sandwich Terns, Yellow Wagtail (south) at Jackson's Bay. The Osprey was again in the Ellerburn valley. A Little Egret at Seamer Road Mere. A Caspian Gull by the harbour mouth. Two Little Egrets and Kingfisher at Brompton ponds. Flocks of House Sparrows in many areas of the district at the moment, an impressive 150 at Cayton Bay. A Crossbill flew south at South Cliff.

 A singing Quail at Long Nab, 75 Common Terns, 4 Mediterranean Gulls flew north, and 4 Yellow Wagtails with the cattle at Cliff Top House. Two Snipe, Green Sandpiper at Harwood Dale Lake, plus a juvenile Goshawk over. An Osprey was fishing at Ellerburn Trout Farm. Two Common Sandpipers at Wykeham East Lake. A Green Sandpiper at Northstile pool, 2+ Willow Tits nearby. The Grey Plover was still at Jackson's Bay, also a Common Sandpiper, Dunlin and 70 Common Terns. A juvenile Cuckoo, Green Woodpecker, Little Egret, 9 Herons, 61 Mallard Ellerburn.

Thursday 7th August

 A Treecreeper by Valley Road ponds. A Ringed Plover and Mediterranean Gull flew north past Long Nab, single Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls moved south. A Peregrine at Wrench Green. A Common Sandpiper and Great White Egret enjoyed by Scarborough Birders Youth members on their event at Wykeham East Lake. Two Little Egrets roosting with Herons at Johnson's Marsh. A Ruff and Green Sandpiper at Harwood Dale Lake. The Grey Plover still at Jackson's Bay, also Whimbrel, 2 Sanderling, and Dunlin. A Little Egret at Scalby Beck. A Yellow-legged Gull in South Bay, 160 House Martins feeding over Oliver's Mount, and a juvenile Marsh Harrier flew north at South Cliff.

Grey Plover, Sanderling in Jackson's Bay. 72 Swifts south over Scholes Park Road. A Hobby over Low Staindale, Dalby Forest. Ruff, 4 Green Sandpipers 32 Lapwing Harwood Dale Lake. A Little Egret, Dunlin, Green Sandpiper, 19 Coot, 9 Lbb Gulls, Kingfisher at Wykeham East Lake. A Peregrine over East Ayton.

A Ruff, Snipe and 2 Green Sandpipers at Harwood Dale Lake.  At Yons Nab: Knot, 3 Little Egrets, 62 Curlew, 41 Oystercatchers, 5 Redshank, 2 Turnstones and 52 Swallows feeding around the cliff top fields. The Little Egret still at Brompton Ponds. 22 Swifts south over Burniston village. A Shelduck and Golden Plover flew south past Long Nab. A Black-tailed Godwit flew in off the sea and flew west at Jackson's Bay, what was presumably the same bird arrived at Wykeham East Lake shortly afterwards to rest. Also at Wykeham Lakes were 2 Redshank and 3 Curlews.

 Highlights past Long Nab were a Grey Plover, 15 Whimbrel, Arctic Tern, 2 Common Terns, 98 Sandwich Terns, Arctic Skua. A Little Egret at Brompton Ponds. 25 Sandwich Terns North Bay. A Grey Plover, 5 Redshank, 4 Turnstone and Little Egret in Jackson's Bay.

 Two Little Egrets were in Jackson's Bay. Highlights past Long Nab included single Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Arctic Skuas, 159 Sandwich Terns, Turnstone, Dunlin, and 2 Golden Plovers. A Little Egret and Yellow Wagtail were at Wykeham East Lake. A Green Woodpecker near Harland Woods.

 Highlights past Long Nab were 3 Velvet Scoter, 3 Sooty & 50 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Arctic Skuas, single Yellow-legged & Caspian Gulls. Two Turtle Doves were at Harwood Dale Lake.

 Highlights past Long Nab in 12 hours (6 observers): Cory's Shearwater north @ 14.25, 6 Sooty & 49 Manx Shearwaters, Grey Plover, 2 Whimbrel, 165 Arctic Terns, Mediterranean Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, 4 Arctic & 2 Great Skuas, 341 Fulmars. A Merlin flew north at Cromer Point. At Wykeham Lakes: 3 Herons, 2 Little Egrets, a Great White Egret, 2 male Mandarins (Match Lake).

Two adult Pomarine Skuas flew north at Long Nab, also 3 Sooty Shearwaters, Great Skua, Arctic Skua, Mediterranean Gull, 2 juvenile Caspian Gulls, and 3 Turnstone. At Wykeham East Lake: Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpipers, and a Marsh Harrier. Two broods of Grey Parridge near Browns chicken farm, Cayton plus 120 House Sparrows by the surf school at Cayton Bay. A Little Egret at Brompton Ponds.
