Tuesday 7th April

At Low Yedmandale early this morning there were 5 Chiffchaffs, a Blackcap and a Yellowhammer all singing, plus a Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Chiffchaffs in the quarry area, and 7 Yellowhammers on Cockrah Road. 4 Coot, 23 Tufted Duck, a pair of Goldeneye, a female Goosander and a Willow Warbler were at Seamer Road Mere, while at Seamer Tip pool there were 2 Willow Warblers, a Blackcap, Chiffchaffs, a Yellowhammer and 3 Pink-footed Geese in the field below. 3 Willow Warblers were in coastal gullies near Scalby Lodge, and a female Wheatear was in the sheep field. At Long Nab a Ring Ouzel flew west, a Yellow Wagtail and 2 Corn Buntings flew north, and a White Wagtail flew south. At Ravenscar and the nearby cinder track there were a Blackcap, a Chiffchaff, 3+ Willow Warblers, 2 Ring Ouzels, and 2 displaying Curlews. A Lapwing flew in off the sea onto the rocks in North Bay, and 6 Wigeon, and a drake Gadwall were at Scalby Mills. In Cayton Bay there were: a Great Crested Grebe, a Red-throated Diver, a Common Scoter, a Sandwich Tern, and at least 7 Sand Martins nest-building. A Heron was seen flying west and a Swallow south over Londesborough Road. 2 Yellow Wagtails and a Greenshank were in Gristhorpe Bay, a Red Kite flew over Crossgates, and a Jack Snipe was spotted at Cromer Point pond. In Thornton Dale, from Outgang Road to Dalby, there were 3 or 4 Goshawks, 8 Buzzards, 5 Willow Warblers, a Blackcap and 3 Grey Wagtails. 9 Greylag Geese were by the flash below Low Moor Farm House, and this evening a White Wagtail was spotted at Burton Riggs. 4 flocks of Common Scoter were recorded flying over Peasholm last night, plus flocks of Teal and Wigeon, a Water Rail and good numbers of Redwings (16 calls heard).
