Sunday 20th October

Highlights from the sea watch at Long Nab this morning include: a third calendar year Glaucous Gull, 25 Whooper Swans, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 3 Goosanders, 4 Purple Sandpipers, a Little Gull, a Mediterranean Gull, a Puffin, 11 Great Skuas and 2 Arctic Skuas; and in the afternoon: a Great Northern Diver flying past plus one on the sea, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 9 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Pomarine Skuas, about 6 Puffins on the sea and 8 heading north, 2 Little Auks, a Goosander and 5 Little Gulls. A Mediterranean Gull, 6 Teal, 3 Shovelers and 17 Gadwall were at Seamer Tip Pool, while along Taylor Way there were both a Common Snipe and a Jack Snipe, a Chiffchaff, a Grey Wagtail and 30 Redwings. At Seamer Road Mere there were 12 Tufted Duck, a Little Grebe, a Goldeneye, 2 Coot, a Mediterranean Gull and a Brambling. A Brambling was also present at Crook Ness this morning. In the harbour this afternoon there was a Long-tailed Duck, while just outside the harbour there were 2 Red-throated Divers. 20 Purple Sandpipers were in the harbour at high tide and 2 more in North Bay. On Castle Hill there was a Mealy Redpoll, a Short-eared Owl, a Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaffs, 10 Goldcrests and a Brambling. 4 Grey Partridges were seen at Playdale Farm. At Scalby Mills there were 50 Wigeon, a Kittiwake, 26 Common Gulls, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, 85 Great Black-backed Gulls, 120 Black-headed Gulls and 550 Herring Gulls!
