Monday 28th September

A good influx of 15 Yellow-browed Warblers. 3 Pale-bellied Brent Geese were at Scalby Mills throughout the day. A Chiffchaff was with a tit flock on Castle Hill, and later a Yellow-browed Warbler was by the castle entrance. 200+ Pink-footed Geese flew south at Long Nab, a Lapland Bunting flew north over the scrape, a Whitethroat and a Stonechat were in the area, and in the ringing plantation there were 3 Chiffchaffs, a Yellow-browed Warbler, a Siskin and a Redwing. More Yellow-browed Warblers were seen along South Cliff: 2 just south of the Italian Gardens, one in the Holbeck area, and 2 in Cornelian Ravine where there were also 2 Blackcaps, a Goldcrest and 2 Chiffchaffs. 52 Teal were at Johnson's Marsh, plus a Great Egret later in the afternoon. At Wykeham Lakes there were 2 Goldeneye, 6 Little Grebes and a Jay at South Lake and 29 Lapwings at East Lake. At Sycarham Wood there were 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps and a Yellow-browed Warbler, while a Snow Bunting was heard calling as it flew high over southwards. In the afternoon 3 Yellow-browed Warblers were seen on Castle Hill, another was near the bridge on Hood Lane, and yet another was at Scalby Beck, where a Whooper Swan flew north. An adult female Red-backed Shrike was spotted at Scalby Nab, and 75 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Troutsdale. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were at Cloughton Wyke and another was seen at Ravenscar, together with a Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaffs, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Blackcaps, 6 Goldcrests and 10 Bullfinches. Passing Long Nab later in the day were 4 Brent Geese, 4 Eiders, a Goosander, 2 Sooty Shearwaters and a Mediterranean Gull. A Black-necked Grebe was seen at Wykeham Lakes.
