Tuesday 18th August

The Hen Harrier was seen again hunting over the fields near Long Nab and Crook Ness, together with a Marsh Harrier. A Whinchat was seen in the hedge inland from Crook Ness, and one was also seen in the cover crop at Long Nab, where there were also 2 Lesser Whitethroats and an increase in Whitethroats. 4 Whimbrel and 2 Ringed Plover flew past south and 2 Turtle Doves were at Fields Farm. At least 12 Curlew were in the field below Seamer Tip. There was no further sign of the Icterine Warbler at Holbeck, but there were 4 Whinchats and 2 Garden Warblers spotted along South Cliff, and a Common Sandpiper was on Black Rocks. At Johnson's Marsh there were 2 Teal, a Little Egret and a Greenshank, while 12 Mandarins were at Harwood Dale Lake. A Whinchat was at Ravenscar just south of the old station, and 2 Crossbills flew north. A cream-crowned Marsh Harrier was seen flying west at Long Nab this afternoon, then it/another was seen at Knipe Point before heading south over Cayton Bay. 2 Mediterranean Gulls were at the north end of Cayton Bay, along with 9 Sandwich Terns. 50+ House Martins were feeding over Woodlands Cemetery/Plaxton Court, as they have been on previous afternoons. This evening a Whimbrel flew south over the Scalby Mills pub, and 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a Greenshank were heard calling over Wykeham East Lake, where there was also a Common Sandpiper.
