Thursday 16th November

 A Woodcock on Oliver's Mount race track this morning. Two Great Northern Divers (adult and juvenile) in South Bay just off the lighthouse. A Black Redstart on rock armour behind Toll House on Marine Drive and two Stonechat were on rock armour opposite lamp posts 54 and 58 on Marine Drive. 120 Pink-footed Geese flew north past Marine Drive and seven Shags were on the sea. Two Mealy Redpoll flew south after leaving Castle Hill. A Kingfisher was at the south end of the inner harbour. At North Yorkshire Water Park this morning; a female Common Scoter, seven Goldeneye, two Gadwall, four Great Crested Grebes, six Little Grebes and an Egyptian Goose. Two Hawfinches flew over heading west. 61 Waxwings were in trees at Willymath Close, Burniston and 11+ mobile Waxwings were in Cayton. In a field off the A64 opposite Stockdales, there were between 500 and 600 Pink-footed Geese and a Bar-headed Goose of unknown origin within the feral goose flocks.

NB. Following further enquiries and research, the reported possible Kumlein's Gull in Scarborough Harbour yesterday has been identified as a pale variant of Northern Herring Gull.

Wednesday 15th November

 Great Northern Diver and Red throated Diver in the harbour this morning. 60 Pink footed geese flew south there. Four Whooper Swans flew south over Scalby Mills and approximately 20 Waxwings were opposite Tesco Express at the junction of Cross Lane and Burniston Road. 60 Teal and two Grey Heron at Johnson's Marsh.

Tuesday 14th November

 A Cetti's Warbler was singing at Seamer Tip pool. A Great Northern Diver was again in the harbour and approximately 35 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Burniston. Three Short eared Owls were north of Long Nab Obs and a Water Pipit was on the flooded field just north of the Obs with Rock Pipits and Pied Wagtails. A Chiffchaff, Woodcock, Little Egret and 100 Blackbird were on the west side of Seamer Tip. 100 Fieldfare and 45 Blackbird were along the River Hertford behind Stockdales. A pair of Willow Tit, two Chiffchaff, a Brambling and a Crossbill were at Robins Bottom Plantation, Willerby. Between Willerby Carr and Straits Lane there was 1,800+ Pink-footed Geese, 700+ Greylag Geese, 20+ White-fronted Geese, 40 Teal, a Ruddy Shelduck, Bar-headed Goose, 1,800 Golden Plover, 2,000+ Lapwing, 55 Dunlin, 45 Snipe, eight Redshank, two Ruff, three Curlew and 3,500 Starling. A Great Egret flew east there. A Goldeneye was at Burton Riggs. At Potter Brompton Carr, viewed from Haybridge; approximately 400 Teal, most of which were on distant fields and in flight only, a Goldeneye, two Marsh Harrier, four Little Egret and eight Snipe. A redhead Goosander at Brompton Butts. A Hawfinch was with Redwing and Fieldfare at Staindale near Bridestones.

Monday 13th November

 Over 50 Waxwings were in trees between Burniston Gardens and Scalby Road, Burniston this morning before fragmenting into smaller flocks north and south. A Great Northern Diver accompanies a Red Throated Diver in the inner harbour. A Short-eared Owl was in a field west of Jackson's Bay. Over 1,000 Pink-footed Geese, five White-fronted Geese, 100 Greylag Geese (including two leucistic individuals) and a Bar-headed Goose and Ruddy Shelduck of unknown origin, were in a field off the A64 west of Stockdales.  A Little Egret on the River Derwent at East Ayton this afternoon.

Sunday 12th November

 Three Kingfishers were at Scalby Mills and two Waxwings were at Newlands between the shops and Cross Lane this morning. A Dipper was at the top end of Peasholm Glen. A Great Northern Diver was in the harbour mouth and 50 Gadwall, two Wigeon and a Teal were at Seamer Tip Pool. Four Goldeneye at Seamer Road Mere, two Raven flew strong west from Folkton and another Raven flew south over Thornton le Dale. A Short-eared Owl at Flixton Carr late afternoon and approximately 5 Waxwings at Green Lane. Two Shags and two Razorbills were off Marine Drive.

Saturday 11th November

 30 plus Waxwings were in trees along Scalby Road, Burniston this morning and eight Waxwings were at Cayton Primary School. 1,500 Pink footed Geese were in the Star Carr area and 110 Pink footed Geese flew south at Burniston. Two Ravens were on Cayton Carrs. A Great Egret flew east past Ruston Carr bridge and a Green Sandpiper was present there. A Great Skua flew south past South Cliff and an unseasonal Common Sandpiper was on Black Rocks, Cornelian. A redhead Goosander was at Brompton Butts. A redhead Goosander , 10 Goldeneye, 11 Great Crested Grebe and 24 Lapwing were at North Yorkshire Water Park. Two Willow Tit, four Marsh Tit, 20 Long-tailed Tit, 30 Crossbill and four Siskin were east of Highwood Brow Car Park, Wykeham Forest. Three Little Egret, two cream crown Marsh Harriers, 48 Lapwing, two Snipe at Potter Brompton Carr, viewed from Haybridge, and a single Brambling with finch flock at Bog Hall Barn.

NB. With the expected influx of Waxwings into the UK, small flocks are now being encountered within the recording area and at locations which are considered to be sensitive, such as schools. Please adopt a common sense and responsible approach to any such site where birds may turn up, especially when children are present. The presence of groups of people with optical instruments and cameras can cause public concern and we would politely and respectfully request that birders are fully aware of their surroundings and enjoy the birds without causing public anxiety and negating the need for Police response to situations which can be avoided . Friday 10th November

 A White-fronted Goose, Little Gull, two Great Northern Divers and two Pintail flew past Cornelian this morning. A Short eared Owl flew north at sea past Long Nab. Two Stonechat and 16 Skylark were present. 19 Tufted Duck, a redhead Goosander, three Goldeneye and a Chiffchaff were at Seamer Road Mere. 15 Waxwings flew west over Burniston and 15 were at West Garth Gardens, Cayton. Three Willow Tits, four Marsh Tits, 57 Crossbills and approximately 500 strong flock of Brambling and Chaffinch in the Dixon Hollow and Sand Dale areas of Dalby Forest. Thursday 9th November

 A Red-throated Diver and Kingfisher at the inner harbour this morning. Two Kingfishers at the Open Air Theatre. Nine Goldeneye, one Pochard, two Great Crested Grebes and five Little Grebes at North Yorkshire Water Park. At Potter Brompton Carr, viewed from Haybridge, there were one Dunlin, 120 Lapwing, four Little Egret, a cream crown Marsh Harrier and seven Whooper Swans (3 adults, 4juveniles).  A mobile mixed flock at Nettledale Lane, Snainton, contained approximately 50 Fieldfare, 30 Redwing, 30 Starling, five Brambling, five Chaffinch and 10 House Sparrow. 134 Curlew were at Gristhorpe Bay. Approximately 20 Waxwings were back at Newlands late afternoon.

Wednesday 8th November

 14 Waxwings at the corner of Newlands Park Road/Newlands Park Grove mid-afternoon. A Black Redstart was on the rock armour at Marine Drive, near the Toll House late afternoon. At East Lake (NY Water Park); 35 Wigeon, 38 Mallard, 2 Gadwall, 10 Teal.

Tuesday 7th November

 A Hawfinch, 60 Brambling, 30 Crossbills, and 17 Whooper Swans(over SE) at Dalby Forest, Warren car park(Dixon's Hole bike park, near Adderstone Field car park). Three Crossbills flew over Long Nab early morning. At North Yorkshire Water Park: 6 Goldeneye, 13 Wigeon, 17 Teal, 7 Lesser Redpoll. A Kingfisher at a more unusual location; Valley Road pond. Two Goldeneye, Mediterranean Gull Seamer Road Mere. Two Kingfishers at the Open Air Theatre. Male Brambling visiting a garden off Cross Lane. Pink-footed Geese over Newby Farm Road at 18.45 hrs. 12 Waxwings at Beck Hole, Cayton.

Monday 6th November

 Three Waxwing flocks in the district today. 20 around the Hovingham Drive area this morning but mobile, 20+ in the Beck Hole area of Cayton, and 6 at Greylands Park Drive. A male Blackcap in the coastal gullies at Scalby Lodge, also a male Merlin flew in off the sea near Scalby Mills.  One Purple Sandpiper on East Pier at high tide. An adult male Hen Harrier moved SW through Long Nab after hunting a short while. Also 7 Whooper Swans south, 4 Twite over, and a Snow Bunting flew north. A Goosander, Goldeneye, 6 Little Grebes, and 2 Kingfishers at Seamer Road Mere. At Potter Brompton Carr; Cetti's Warbler, Chiffchaff, 1150 Fieldfare, 320 Starling, Stonechat, Water Rail, 3 Great White Egrets, 7 Little Egrets, 2 Marsh Harriers, 92 Teal, 7 Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, Shelduck, 20 Snipe, Kingfisher, and 114 Pink-footed Geese (over).

Sunday 5th November

 An increase in Waxwings today. 60+ at Beck Hole/Main Street, Cayton though very mobile. Up to 13 at Wreyfield Drive, 5 on Newlands Park Avenue, and 3 at Loftus Close. 300 Fieldfare at Coverdale Moor and 1,000+ around North Street bridge, Flixton. Seven Whooper Swans flew south over Gristhorpe. Less Pink-footed Geese on the move today; 80 west over NY Water Park, and 100 south over Wykeham Forest. 75 Gadwall at Seamer tip pool. A Red Kite flew NW over Scalby Beck. A late Wheatear at Cromer Point Water Treatment. A Cetti's Warbler in the NW corner of the water sports lake at NY Water Park. A Barnacle Goose, 2 Shoveler on East Lake, also 6 Great Crested Grebes, 5 Goldeneye, Fieldfare and Redwing at the park. To the south, 1400+ Golden Plover were circling Binnington Carr. Two Sandwich Terns were at Scalby Mills late afternoon.

Saturday 4th November

 An interesting migration watch at Long Nab this morning; a Shore Lark flew north along the cliff line, and a flock of 14 Waxwings flew north just inland, 4 Little Gulls north, and a Common Redpoll flew south.  Repeat sightings of Merlin, at least two individuals. A big movement of Pink-footed Geese today, many reports, probably 1700+ birds involved (moving both north and south). Seven Whooper Swans flew south (seen Long Nab and Jackson's Bay). Bar-tailed Godwit Jackson's bay. A drake Goldeneye at Seamer Road Mere. Red-throated Diver in the harbour. A Little Auk was on the sea off Scalby Mills at midday. Seven Little Egrets, 2 Marsh Harriers at Potter Brompton Carr. Two adult Mediterranean Gulls in South Bay. Five Waxwings at Wreyfield Avenue, Barrowcliffe, reported from Newlands first thing but not later, not many berries left there!

Friday 3rd November

 Up to 26 Waxwings at Newlands Park Drive, and 8 at Barry's Lane, Falsgrave. Nine Little Grebes, 2 Goldeneye, Goosander, and a Water Rail at Seamer Road Mere. 78 Gadwall at Seamer tip pool, a large count for that site! A Little Auk flew north past Long Nab, plus a Corn Bunting at the cover crop. A cc Marsh Harrier flew south at Gristhorpe. The Great Crested Grebe was still in the harbour. At floods around Low Marishes were 1440 Lapwing, 38 Golden Plovers, 13 Dunlin, 960 Black-headed Gulls, 525 Herring Gulls, and 600 Starlings. Nine Goldeneye, Water Rail at North Yorkshire Water Park (East Lake).

Thursday 2nd November

 38 Waxwings were near Newlands shops this morning, and 25+ at Gillylees, and presumably the same around Hovingham Drive/Plaxton Court. 19 Whooper Swans at Scalby Lodge pond, also 3 Grey Plovers there. Potter Brompton Carr had a party of 19 Whooper Swans flew SE (pos the Scalby birds), also 40 Teal, Little Egret, 3 Marsh Harriers, juv Peregrine, 160 Fieldfare. Three Blackcaps at Long Nab, Goosander, Goldeneye and Little Gull past. A Red-throated Diver and Great Crested Grebe in the harbour. 15 Whooper Swans south past Marine Drive.

Wednesday 1st November

 18+ Waxwings on Newlands Park Drive today, just north of Newlands shops. At Ravenscar: 2 Woodcocks, Brambling, Blackcap, Chiffchaff. East Lake (NY Water Park) held 180 Wigeon, 65 Teal, 2 Goldeneye, 11 Coot. 120 Wigeon, Knot, 30 Redshank, 12 Ringed Plovers Scalby Mills. A Red Kite at Cloughton Wyke was presumably the one seen at Long Nab, and over Cross Lane heading south a little later. Nine Little Gulls flew north off Cloughton Wyke, and a Woodcock flew in off the sea. Eight Woodcocks grounded at Long Nab, a Snow Bunting flew south this afternoon. A Shoveler was at Scalby Lodge Pond. Three Grey Plovers at Jackson's bay, and Woodcock at Scalby Lodge.

 20 Waxwings at Hovingham Drive this afternoon. Highlights past Long Nab included 3 Velvet Scoter, 2 Little Gulls, a Black-throated Diver, and Merlin.

 An Egyptian Goose at Burton Riggs. Two Blackcaps at Burniston and one at Long Nab. The Red-throated Diver and Great Crested Grebe in the harbour. Kingfisher on rocks at Scalby Mills. A single Waxwing on Limestone Road, Burniston late morning.

 Six Waxwings were at Limestone Road, Burniston mid-afternoon. The Great Crested Grebe was still in the harbour. A Short-eared Owl flew in off the sea at Jackson's Bay, also 3 Grey Plover there.

Saturday 28th October

 A Ring Ouzel was calling from trees early morning at Whin Bank. A Black Redstart was on the cliffs south of the town and a late Common Redstart was at Stoupe Brow. 3 Waxwings flew over Burniston towards Scalby and a late Garden Warbler was at Scalby Mills railway terminus. Blackcaps were at Crossgates and the Castle and single Woodcock flew in off the sea near Cromer Point and north of the Castle. Another Woodcock was near Yons Nab.  A Kingfisher was off Marine Drive and flew towards Scalby Mills. 2 Brambling were at Cloughton Newlands. 40 Gadwall were the highlight at Seamer Tip Pool and two Red throated Divers were off Marine Drive. A juvenile Great crested Grebe remained in the harbour with a Shag. A Chiffchaff was near Mount Pleasant Farm, Lebberston and approximately 20 Goldcrests at the Castle. Pink footed Geese were moving again today; 454 south over Mount Pleasant Farm, skeins of 120, 50 and 25 south over Scalby Mills, 38 south east over Cloughton Wyke, 60 south east over Seamer Tip Pools and 45 west over Thornton Dale. A Shag was at Peasholm Park.

Friday 27th October

 A Russian White-fronted Goose flew north at Long Nab with a skein of Pink-footed Geese. Two Twite were in the Linnet flock there. A drake Eider flew north past Marine Drive. At East Lake (NY Water Park) were 96 Wigeon, 23 Teal, 3 Gadwall, and a Goldeneye. Potter Brompton Carr held 111 Teal, 2 Goldeneye, Great White Egret, 4 Little Egrets, 5 Marsh Harriers, Peregrine,4 Snipe, 280 Fieldfare, Barn Owl, and 46 Pink-footed Geese flew east. The Great Crested Grebe was still in the harbour together with a Red-throated Diver.

Thursday 26th October

Three late Swallows flew south past Long Nab, and a little later past Cayton Bay. Also 3 Twite flew south along the cliffs at Long Nab, plus a Garden Warbler at Crook Ness. A Pintail was with the Wigeon at Scalby Mills. A Woodcock at Castle Hill. 10 Purple Sandpipers, 22 Turnstones at East Pier high tide roost. The Great Crested Grebe still in the harbour, 2 Shags around the harbour and a Dark-bellied Brent Goose flew south past Marine Drive. Migrants at Ravenscar included a Ring Ouzel, 150 Blackbirds, 300 Redwing, a Chiffchaff, and 15 Goldcrests. Eight Waxwing around Nightingale Lane, Crossgates mid-morning.

Wednesday 25th October

 Good numbers of thrushes etc were arriving from the east today.....minimum counts at Long Nab were 2 Waxwings, 1500 Redwing, 600 Fieldfare, 400 Blackbirds, Ring Ouzel, 20 Brambling, Common Redpoll. In the Cromer Point area were 35 Blackbirds, 12 Redwing, 6 Fieldfare, 12 Goldcrests, and 5 Common Redpoll. Castle Hill had 35 Goldcrests, Chiffchaff, Siberian Chiffchaff, and a Brambling. Two Common Redpolls were at South Cliff. At Potter Brompton Carr; Pink-footed Goose, 75 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, 2 Goldeneye, Great White Egret, 3 Little Egrets, 4 Marsh Harriers, a Swallow (flew NW), 190 Fieldfare, 120 Starling, and a Cetti's Warbler. A Woodcock flew in off the sea at Marine Drive. Two Goosanders at Peasholm Park Lake.

Tuesday 24th October

 A wet morning with NE winds brought an increase in migrants to Castle Hill by this afternoon. A Mealy Redpoll was on the north side. A minimum of 24 Goldcrests, 33 Robins plus 2 Chiffchaffs. Two Dark-bellied Brent Geese flew north. A Brambling and Chiffchaff at Long Nab. The Red-throated Diver was still on the Water Sports Lake at NY Water Park. 42 Wigeon, 16 Ringed Plovers at Scalby Mills. Two Brambling, 11 Greenfinches in a Cayton garden.

Monday 23rd October

 The impressive Shag movements continue; 145 south past Long Nab this morning. Also south past were 3 Brambling, 41 Twite, and a Lapland Bunting. Five Goosanders flew south past Scalby Mills. Two Ravens flew north at Pickering. 120 Pink-footed Geese SW over Crossgates. Two Shags, and the Great Crested Grebe still in the harbour. In Dalby Forest, a Green Woodpecker at Dixons, Willow Tit at Bickley, Crossbills widespread. 22 Gadwall Seamer tip pool. A redhead Goosander at Seamer Road mere. Seven Willow Tits between Wrench Green and Northstile.

Sunday 22nd October

 Two Black Redstarts at Mount Pleasant Farm, Redcliffe. Also Twite at nearby Yons Nab, a Little Gull south there, 3 Golden Plover in off, and a Blackcap. A Purple Sandpiper in Burniston Bay, 3 Little Gulls in fields north of Cromer Point, 50 Pink-footed Geese south there. A Short-eared Owl flew in off the sea at Holbeck.  A Red-throated Diver inland at the Water Sports Lake of North Yorkshire Water Park (2nd site record). 22 Russian White-fronted Geese flew in off the sea over Jackson's Bay and continued SW late morning. A Jack Snipe at Long Nab. 20 Crossbills south over town, 3 south over Johnson's Marsh. Dipper again at Scalby Mills. Good numbers of Brambling in the Dixon's area of Dalby Forest totalling 40+, also c20 near Crosscliffe.

Saturday 21st October

 Highlights today included a Grey Phalarope feeding off Long Nab this morning, a ringtail Hen Harrier north, 2 Common Cranes SW there mid-afternoon, and a Red Kite south, also 126 Little Gulls, Sandwich & Common Terns past. Short-eared Owls were arriving again, three at  South Cliff and two at Long Nab, the latter also having a distant unidentified asio owl high north. Yellow-browed Warblers were at Scalby Mills, and again at Holbeck. A Little Egret flew south over Castle Road, 50 Blackbirds, 20 Song Thrushes at nearby Castle Hill. At South Cliff a Ring Ouzel was at the south end of the golf course, and 2 Long-tailed Ducks, and a Velvet Scoter flew south. A Goosander at Seamer Rd Mere. Two Waxwings were at Crossgates, but mobile. A Ring Ouzel at Jackson's Bay, 2 Woodcocks flew in off the sea. South Cliff and Long Nab also recorded Woodcocks today. Four Mandarins, 3 Willow Tits at Wrench Green. Three Purple Sandpipers, Great Crested Grebe at the harbour. Friday 20th October

 A day of easterly gales and heavy rain. Difficult conditions for birding but a few were out and about. A long seawatch at Long Nab was less fruitful than hoped, highlights were Pomarine and 10 Arctic Skuas, 45 Little Gulls and a Velvet Scoter past. The Great Crested Grebe was still in the harbour. Little Grebe, 44 Wigeon Johnson's Marsh. The sheltered south side of Castle Hill held 30 Blackbirds, 5 Song Thrushes and 5 Redwing.  25 Blackbirds, 5 Brambling along South Cliff.

Thursday 19th October

 A busy day with many thrushes and robins grounded owing to rain along the coast,  Redwing were arriving in off the sea this morning and quickly moving inland with 15 west over East Ayton, 32 west over Scalby Mills and over the town. At Ravenscar there were 250 Fieldfare, 200 Redwing, 60 Blackbird, five Song Thrush, 4 Brambling, one Chiffchaff, one Goldcrest, 45 Starling, 30 Robin and two Grey Wagtail. On Castle Hill today, one Ring Ouzel, 50 Blackbird, 30 Song Thrush, 25 Robin, one Blackcap and two Goldcrest. A Little Auk flew south off the harbour and a juvenile Whooper Swan was on Bogle Hole Beck. A Red Kite flew over the A64 one mile west of Sherburn. A juvenile Great crested Grebe and a Red-throated Diver were in the Harbour and two Little Egret were at Red Cliff. A male Blackcap, six Gadwall and eight Tufted Duck were at Seamer Road Mere. Nine species of wildfowl flew south past South Cliff in addition to two Short-eared Owls, 329 Redwing and 328 Skylark. A Great Northern Diver flew north there, with a number of thrushes and robins grounded. A Yellow-browed Warbler was just below Holbeck Car Park. 10 Mediterranean Gulls in South Bay. 12 species of wildfowl past Long Nab today including two Dark-bellied Brent Geese. Also past Long Nab on a protracted watch were two Great Egrets flew south, three Short-eared Owls flew in off the sea. A Red-necked Grebe, 86 Shags and an Arctic Skua north. Eight Little Gulls also passed. Two Jack Snipe, one flushed on Cleveland Way and one at Hundale. A Ring Ouzel and a Yellow-browed Warbler were at the ringing plantation and a second Yellow-browed Warbler was at  Cliff Top House. Five Brambling were at Crook Ness.

Wednesday 18th October

 Despite the SE winds it was quiet in Scarborough. At Potter Brompton Carr; 4 Little Egrets, Great White Egret, Dunlin,  4 Marsh Harriers (all juvs), 11 Wigeon, 6 Teal. 12 Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin at Scalby Mills. A Great Crested Grebe in the harbour. Tuesday 17th October

 A Little Auk was photographed from The Queensferry off Marine Drive late morning. It could not be relocated. Highlights past Long Nab included a lingering juvenile Glaucous Gull, Dark-bellied Brent Goose, Velvet Scoter, Goldeneye, 4 Little Gulls, 9 Arctic Terns, 74 Shags. A Merlin was seen several times at Long Nab. 15 Ringed Plovers, and 56 Wigeon at Scalby Mills. A Woodcock moved through a Gristhorpe Garden. Kingfishers at Peasholm Park, and Marine Drive.
