Thursday 5th March

A Chiffchaff was spotted along the Cleveland Way this morning, and 3 Teal, 5 Snipe, a Stonechat and a Jack Snipe were by Cromer Point Pond. In the Scalby Lodge pond area there were 42 Curlew, a Stonechat and again the Hooded Crow. A Ringed Plover and 2 Purple Sandpipers were in Jackson's Bay, and 250+ Black-headed Gulls and an adult Mediterranean Gull were feeding in the clifftop fields above. At Scalby Mills there were 174 Wigeon and a Kittiwake. A skein of about 180 Pink-footed Geese was seen heading north over Crossgates, most likely the same group of 172 that was also seen over Ravenscar. A Red Kite flew east over Newby. 4 Goshawks were seen both from Troutsdale and from Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint, from where 6 Buzzards were also seen. A male Stonechat was seen along the Cleveland Way just south of Cayton Bay, and a pair remain near the Long Nab observatory. At Wykeham South Lake there were 10 Great Crested Grebes, a Little Grebe, 7 Goldeneye, 27 Tufted Duck and 4 Gadwall, while at Holbeck car park there were 4 adult Mediterranean Gulls, 1 in breeding plumage, 2 in winter plumage, and 1 in part breeding plumage (the latter getting amorous with a Black-headed Gull!)
