Interesting
start to the day with snow affecting movements throughout the area and strong
NW winds on the coast.
The
afternoon arrival of two white-winged gulls was mirrored at Filey where 6 were
discovered. A juvenile Glaucous Gull
was seen going South, a fair way out, at Long Nab at 09.52 and then one was
seen at Scalby Mills at 11.40. Next in the story was the location of 2 juvenile
Glaucous Gulls at Scalby Mills at
13.20 which remained in the area for at least 40 minutes. But at 13.57 the next
twist in the tale was the appearance of a 3rd Glaucous Gull, this one an adult flying North close in. The
epilogue of events came at 14.10 when a 2nd winter Iceland Gull also flew North at Scalby
Mills about 300 metres off shore.
At
Long Nab a Velvet Scoter went North, there were 13 Herons on Johnson’s Marsh, a
Brambling at the Forge Valley feeders, a Goosander at Harwood Dale Lake, 5
Whooper Swans at Wykeham South Lake, Mute Swan and 5 Common Scoter in South Bay
and in the Harbour there were 2 Great
Northern Divers and a Black-necked Grebe.
