Thursday 15th September

A northerly wind was a good omen for sea passage to day with all four species of Skuas being noted at coastal locations. Two juvenile Long-tailed Skuas flew south off Marine Drive this morning, the first at 0814hrs and the second at 0825hrs. Also past there this morning were 29 Sooty Shearwaters and 69 Purple Sandpipers north and 16 Arctic Skuas south. Two skeins of 80 plus Pink-footed Geese passed south over Pickering and three Guillemots were in North Bay and 16 Sandwich Terns and 10 Curlew were at Scalby Mills. An adult Pomarine Skua with full spoons, perhaps one of the most exciting encounters on any sea watch, flew north past Long Nab Obs at 0700hrs and a juvenile Long-tailed Skua flew north at 1015hrs. Also north past Long Nab Obs today were 10,840 Razorbills (162S), 40 Purple Sandpipers and a firs calendar year Yellow-legged Gull. Another juvenile Long-tailed Skua flew south past Long Nab Obs at 1551hrs. Two Great Skuas flew north past Marine Drive and one flew south past Long Nab Obs.
