Friday 17th June

A Quail was singing in a field south west of Cliff Top House Long Nab early this morning. Passing south at Long Nab this morning were a Great crested Grebe, eight Common Scoter, 17 Curlew with two west and 433 Common Swifts. Passing north were 86 Common Scoter, a second calendar year Mediterranean Gull and 15 Black headed Gulls, including the first two juveniles of the year. A Turtle Dove was noted at Givendale Head Farm, Ebberston this morning and three Common Buzzards and a pair of Tree Pipits feeding a youngster were at Wykeham Raptor Viewpoint. Encouraging news was received in respect of urban nesting Kittiwakes in Scarborough with a count of 1,136 last week, a good increase on 2021. There was, however; an astounding increase in Kittiwake nests on The Grand Hotel from 363 in 2021 to 537 in 2022, an increase of 67.6%. Three Red Kites were noted over West Ayton this afternoon and a Hobby flew over Whin Bank. A female Eider was in North Bay this evening. Five Teal and a Shelduck were present on Johnson's Marsh.
