Saturday 30th May

A Dipper was feeding a fledgling on the river near Hackness this morning, while 4 Tufted Duck and a Barn Owl were seen nearby. A Whimbrel flew north past Long Nab, a Hobby was seen over the western side of Wykeham South Lake, and a Red Kite was at Broxa. At Seamer Tip pool there was a Heron, a large family of Long-tailed Tits, 3 drake Shovelers, a pair of Gadwall and a pair of Oystercatchers. 8 Whitethroat and 5 Yellowhammers were on Cockrah Road to Spikers Hill, a Peregrine was yikking in the quarry, a Goshawk and a Tawny Owl were at High Yedmandale, and a Buzzard, 5 Chiffchaffs and a Bullfinch were at Low Yedmandale. 2 Honey Buzzards were above Backleys Farm in Troutsdale, one wing-clapping. On grouse managed moorland in the north-west of our area there were 6 pairs of Golden Plover, 3 pairs of Curlew, 3 Stonechat territories and 4 Red Grouse, but a notable lack of Crows or birds of prey. A Canada Goose with 7 juveniles was seen at Burton Riggs; 3 broods of Mallard (3,3 and 4,), 2 broods of Greylag (3 and 3) and one set of cygnets (6) were at Seamer Tip Pool along with 2 singing Reed Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers and a Lesser Whitethroat.
