Saturday 31st December

A single Waxwing was reported in a garden in Green Lane this morning and at least 12 Waxwings were seen some 5 minutes or so from The Open Air Theatre where a Kingfisher was present. The location was described as being on a straight section of road near to a roundabout (Northstead area?). A Red-throated Diver and a Little Grebe were again reported from the harbour and two Red-throated Divers were off Marine Drive. In the Low Dalby/Ellerburn area, three calling Raven flew high south down the valley and four Marsh Tit and three Common Crossbill were also noted. 12 plus Waxwings were in the Crossgates area.

The undoubted highlight today, however, was the discovery of a sub adult male Atlantic Walrus known as Thor, which was hauled out on the harbour slipway. The animal remained resting there until late afternoon when it re-entered the water and was seen to swim out to sea.
